We report the generation of 207-fs pulses with 1.2mW average power at 1036 nm directly from a passively mode-locked Yb-doped fibre laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror for mode-locking and pairs of diffraction gratings for intracavity dispersion compensation. These results imply a 4-fold reduction in pulse duration over previously reported figure-of-eight cavity passively mode-locked Yb-doped fibre lasers. Stable pulse trains are produced at the fundamental repetition rate of the resonator, 24.0MHz. On the other hand, this laser offers a cleaner spectrum and greater stability and is completely self-starting.

This letter presents the effective design of a tunable 80 Gbit/s wavelength converter with a simple configuration consisting of a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). Based on both cross-gain and cross-phase modulation in SOA, the polarity-preserved, ultrafast wavelength conversion is achieved by appropriately filtering the blue-chirped spectral component of a probe light. Moreover, the experiments are carried out to investigate into the wavelength tunability and the maximum tuning range of the designed wavelength converter. Our results show that a wide wavelength conversion range of nearly 35 nm is achieved with 21-nm downconversion and 14-nm upconversion, which is substantially limited by the operation wavelength ranges of a tunable OBPF and a tunable continuous-wave laser in our experiment. We also exploited the dynamics characteristics of the wavelength converter with variable input powers and different injection current of SOA. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Compact and efficient triple-pass optical parametric chirped pulse amplification in a single crystal has been demonstrated. The signal was triple-pass amplified in a single nonlinear crystal by a nanosecond pump pulse. The first-pass optical parametric amplification is completely phase matched in the plane of the maximum effective nonlinearity, and the other two passes work symmetrically near to the first-pass optical parametric amplification plane. This architecture efficiently increases the overall gain, overcomes the optical parametric fluorescence, and clearly simplifies the amplification scheme.

Density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU) has emerged as a promising tool to prepare chirality enriched nanotube samples. Here, we assess the performance of different surfactants for DGU. Bile salts (e.g., sodium cholate (SC), sodium deoxycholate (SDC), and sodium taurodeoxycholate (TDC)) are more effective in individualizing Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) compared to linear chain surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)) and better suited for DGU. Using SC, a narrower diameter distribution (0.69-0.81 nm) is achieved through a single DGU step on CoMoCAT tubes, when compared to SDC and TDC (0.69-0.89 nm). No selectivity is obtained using SDBS. due to its ineffectiveness in debundling. We assign the reduce selectivity of dihydroxy bile salts (S DC and TDC) in comparison with trihydroxy SC to the formation of secondary micelles. This is determined by the number and position of hydroxyl ( OH) groups on the a-side of the steroid backbone. We also enrich CoMoCAT SWNT in the 0.84-0.92 nm range using the Pluronic F98 triblock copolymer. Mixtures of bile salts (SC) and linear chain surfactants (SOS) are used to enrich metallic and semiconducting laser-ablation grown SWNTs. We demonstrate enrichment of a single chirality, (6,5), combining diameter and metallic versus semiconductillg separation on CoMoCAT samples.

Real-time detection of single electron tunneling through a T-shaped double quantum dot is simulated, based on a Monte Carlo scheme. The double dot is embedded in a dissipative environment and the presence of electrons on the double dot is detected with a nearby quantum point contact. We demonstrate directly the bunching behavior in electron transport, which leads eventually to a super-Poissonian noise. Particularly, in the context of full counting statistics, we investigate the essential difference between the dephasing mechanisms induced by the quantum point contact detection and the coupling to the external phonon bath. A number of intriguing noise features associated with various transport mechanisms are revealed.

Two semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs), of which one is coated with 50% reflection film on the top and the other is not, were contrastively studied in passively mode-locked solid-state lasers which were pumped by low output power laser diode (LD). Experiments have shown that reducing the modulation depth of SESAM by coating partial reflection film, whose reflectivity is higher than that between SESAM and air interface, is an effective method to get continuous wave (CW) mode-locking instead of Q-switched mode-locking (QML) in low power pumped solid-state lasers. A simple Nd:YVO4 laser pumped by low power LD, in which no water-cooling system was used, could obtain CW mode-locking by the 50% reflector coated SESAM with average output power of ~ 20 mW

In this report, we have investigated the temperature and injection power dependent photoluminescence in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) systems with low and high areal density, respectively. It was found that, for the high-density samples, state filling effect and abnormal temperature dependence were interacting. In particular, the injection power-induced variations were most obvious at the temperature interval where carriers transfer from small quantum dots (SQDs) to large quantum dots (LQDs). Such interplay effects could be explained by carrier population of SQDs relative to LQDs, which could be fitted well using a thermal carrier rate equation model. On the other hand, for the low density sample, an abnormal broadening of full width at half maximum (FWHM) was observed at the 15-100 K interval. In addition, the FWHM also broadened with increasing injection power at the whole measured temperature interval. Such peculiarities of low density QDs could be attributed to the exciton dephasing processes, which is similar to the characteristic of a single quantum dot. The compared interplay effects of high-and low-density QDs reflect the difference between an interacting and isolated QDs system.

We describe our research on the employment of an infrared upconversion screen made of electron trapping material (ETM) in combination with the high sensitivity of the S-20 photocathode responsive to visible radiation to produce a streak camera arrangement capable of viewing and recording infrared incident pulses. The ETM-based upconversion screen converts 800-1600 nm infrared radiation to visible light which is viewed or recorded by the S-20 photocathode. The peak values of the upconversion efficiency are located at 1165 nm for CaS:Eu, Sm and 1060 nm for CaS:Ce, Sm. The present experiment showed time resolution was 12.3 ps for a CaS:Eu, Sm screen and 8.4 ps for a CaS:Ce, Sm screen. The minimum detectability is 4.8 x 10(-9) J/mm(2) (minimum detectability of the coupled visible streak camera is 8.3x10(-10) J/mm(2)). Other parameters, such as spatial resolution and dynamic range, have also been measured and analyzed. The results show ETM can be used in the measurement of infrared ultrafast phenomena up to picosecond time domain. In consideration of the limited number of trapped electrons in ETM, the infrared-sensitive streak camera consisting of an ETM-based upconversion screen is suitable to operate in the single shot mode. The numerical simulation of flows past flapping foils at moderate Reynolds numbers presents two challenges to computational fluid dynamics: turbulent flows and moving boundaries. The direct forcing immersed boundary (IB) method has been developed to simulate laminar flows. However, its performance in simulating turbulent flows and transitional flows with moving boundaries has not been fully evaluated. In the present work, we use the IB method to simulate fully developed turbulent channel flows and transitional flows past a stationary/plunging SD7003 airfoil. To suppress the non-physical force oscillations in the plunging case, we use the smoothed discrete delta function for interpolation in the IB method. The results of the present work demonstrate that the IB method can be used to simulate turbulent flows and transitional flows with moving boundaries.

Fast plasma sintering deposition of SiC nano-structured coatings was achieved using a specially designed non-transferred dc plasma torch operated at reduced pressure. Employing the Taguchi method, the deposition parameters were optimized and verified. With the optimized combination of deposition parameters, homogeneous SiC coatings were deposited on relatively large area substrates of Φ50 mm and 50×50 mm with a deposition rate as high as 20 μm/min. Ablation test showed that such coatings can be used as oxidation resistance coatings in high temperature oxidizing environment.

In this paper, based on Einstein relationship between diffusion and random walk, the electrochemical behavior of a system with a limited number of molecules was simulated and explored theoretically. The transition of the current vs time responses from discrete to continuous was clearly obtained as the number of redox molecules increased from 10 to 10(6).

Ultrafast UV-vibrational spectroscopy was used to investigate how vibrational excitation of the bridge changes photoinduced electron transfer between donor (dimethylaniline) and acceptor (anthracene) moieties bridged by a guanosine-cytidine base pair (GC). The charge-separated (CS) state yield is found to be lowered by high-frequency bridge mode excitation. The effect is linked to a dynamic modulation of the donor-acceptor coupling interaction by weakening of H-bonding and/or by disruption of the bridging base-pair planarity.
