Both Nicholas Malebranche and Pierre-Daniel Huet were at first positively influenced by Descartes's Meditations, and both came to perceive shortcomings in that work. With respect to mind-body dualism, Malebranche attempted to strengthen Descartes's position by jettisoning clarity and distinctness basing it instead on a principle of intentionality. Huet jettisoned the whole position in favor of skepticism. The source of their different responses lay in their different estimations of Descartes's integrity.

The structural change of society from product-based business to service- and further to need-based business has caused the fact that work for environmental issues has spread from conventional factories and environmentally harmful production to concern services and offices as well. Almost every company has an office, so a relatively small environmental burden caused by an individual office grows remarkable already at the state level and globally even more. Motivation to work for environmental issues in an individual office could be challenging even without the fact that wasted environmental impacts bound also wasted costs. Besides cost savings, a concretely greener image of a company has its value in the B2Cas well as in the B2B-field. Consumers and clients are more and more conscious of environmental issues and demand concrete actions instead of speeches, good thoughts and meaningless certifications. Internal work for environmental issues at a strategy level is not sufficient, so operational environmental management is needed for changing old practices. This research is about the effects of operative environmental management on the greening process of an office-based business. The research is outlined to concern the operative work in the office including field sales. Target was to concretely lower the environmental impacts of Lyreco Finland and to find cost savings directly by changing the operative practices in the office and also indirectly by affecting the level of environmental knowledge of the personnel. During the greening process, the aim was also to create concrete arguments for marketing as well. The circle of greening process, which was especially created for this diploma work, was used as a method. The circle divides a year to themes and sections separated by factors of environmental impacts. Separation is based on Brett Wills’ thoughts of seven green wastes (Wills, Brett. The Green Intensions. 2009) and follows it uneasily. The circle aimed at ensuring evolutionary growth of knowledge instead of being revolutionary in the changing process. Committing personnel to the process from its start by asking ideas from them and giving them clear directions was an important part of the research of operative management. Because of working from distance, communication with personnel was operated by frequent training days and weekly greening notes via emails and intranet. Also availability for communication was an important task because of the telecommuting. Research results of this work show that operative environmental management in an officebased business today is mostly management of change. When the strategic environmental friendliness is taken into a concrete level, the most important individual factor is motivating the operating personnel. Research shows that evolutionary change is found being an efficient way to make a change. Also understanding one´s own impact on the environmental burden and on the whole greening process clearly motivates the personnel. Results show that in the operative realization of the greening process, clear directions of new working practices, being as concrete as possible, and committing personnel to follow them make the process more effective. The operative environmental management and the cycle of the greening process decrease the environmental burden and save costs. The concrete results could be used as believable arguments in marketing and therefore exploited in communication with interest groups. Commitment of the management is also one of the key factors of success in the greening process. In this research, changes in the business field by a company trade took the focus of the management away from the greening process and made the process more inefficient by decreasing the amount of training days. The circle of greening process will be used as a tool in the future, as well, and therefore it will help observe environmental impacts of a company and increase sustainable development. Commitment of management to the evolutionary environmental work helps the operating personnel lower environmental impacts, decrease costs and build a concretely greener image.

Kaasukaarihitsauksessa suojakaasuna käytetään yleensä argonin ja hiilidioksidin tai argonin ja heliumin seoksia. Suojakaasu vaikuttaa useisiin hitsausominaisuuksiin, jotka puolestaan vaikuttavat hitsauksen laatuun ja tuottavuuteen. Automaattisella suojakaasun tunnistuksella ja virtausmäärän mittauksella voitaisiin tehdä hitsauksesta paitsi käyttäjän kannalta yksinkertaisempaa, myös laadukkaampaa. Työn tavoite on löytää mahdollisimman edullinen ja kuitenkin mahdollisimman tarkasti kaasuseoksia tunnistava menetelmä, jota voitaisiin hyödyntää MIG/MAG-hitsauskoneeseen sisäänrakennettuna. Selvä etu on, jos menetelmällä voidaan mitata myös kaasun virtausmäärä. Äänennopeus kaasumaisessa väliaineessa on aineen atomi- ja molekyylirakenteesta ja lämpötilasta riippuva ominaisuus, joka voidaan mitata melko edullisesti. Äänennopeuden määritys perustuu ääniaallon kulkuajan mittaamiseen tunnetun pituisella matkalla. Kaasun virtausnopeus on laskettavissa myötä- ja vastavirtaan mitattujen kulkuaikojen erotuksen avulla. Rakennettu mittauslaitteisto koostuu kahdesta ultraäänimuuntimesta, joiden halkaisija on 10 mm ja jotka toimivat sekä lähettimenä että vastaanottimena. Muuntimet ovat 140 mm:n etäisyydellä toisistaan virtauskanavassa, jossa suojakaasu virtaa yhdensuuntaisesti äänen kanssa. Virtauskanava on putki, jossa on käytetty elastisia materiaaleja, jotta ääniaaltojen eteneminen kanavan runkoa pitkin minimoituisi. Kehitetty algoritmi etsii kahden lähetetyn 40 kHz:n taajuisen kanttiaaltopulssin aiheuttaman vasteen perusteella ääniaallon saapumisajanhetken. Useiden mittausten, tulosten lajittelun ja suodatuksen jälkeen tuntemattomalle kaasulle lasketaan lämpötilakompensoitu vertailuluku. Tuntematon kaasu tunnistetaan vertailemalla lukua tunnettujen kaasuseosten mitattuihin vertailulukuihin. Laitteisto tunnistaa seokset, joissa heliumin osuus argonissa on enintään 50 %. Hiilidioksidia sisältävät argonin seokset puolestaan tunnistetaan puhtaaseen hiilidioksidiin asti jopa kahden prosenttiyksikön tarkkuudella. Kaasun tilavuusvirtausmittauksen tarkkuus on noin 1,0 l/min.

Kainuun maahanmuuttotyön linjaukset ovat alueellinen tarkennus valtakunnallisiin maahanmuutto-ohjelmiin. Alueellisesti Kainuun maahanmuuttotyönlinjaukset kytkeytyvät Kainuun maakunta -kuntayhtymän laatimaan maakuntaohjelmaan sekä Pohjois-Pohjanmaan maahanmuuttostrategiaan. Kainuulla ja Pohjois-Pohjanmaalla on yhteinen maahanmuuttopäällikkö sekä maahanmuuttoasiaintoimikunta. Maahanmuuttotoimijoiden yhteisenä tavoitteena ja linjausten keskeisenä ajatuksena on, että maahanmuutto nähdään osana positiivista väestökehitystä Kainuussa. Linjauksia laatineen työryhmän tavoitteena on ollut tehdä maahanmuuttotyön strategiset linjaukset kainuulaisista lähtökohdista, kainuulaiseen maahanmuuttotyöhön sopiviksi. Linjausten tarkoituksena on toimia pohjana kaikelle maahanmuuttotyölle Kainuussa; ne ovat kainuulaisten maahanmuuttotoimijoiden yhteinen näkemys siitä, mihin suuntaan maahanmuuttotyötä Kainuussa tulisi viedä. Kainuun maahanmuuttotyön linjaukset toteutettiin osana Kainuun elinkeino-, liikenne- ja ympäristökeskuksen (ELY-keskus) hallinnoimaa Kansainvälinen työvoima -projektia. Unsuccessful mergers are unfortunately the rule rather than the exception. Therefore it is necessary to gain an enhanced understanding of mergers and post-merger integrations (PMI) as well as learning more about how mergers and PMIs of information systems (IS) and people can be facilitated. Studies on PMI of IS are scarce and public sector mergers are even less studied. There is nothing however to indicate that public sector mergers are any more successful than those in the private sector. This thesis covers five studies carried out between 2008 and 2011 in two organizations in higher education that merged in January 2010. The most recent study was carried out two years after the new university was established. The longitudinal case-study focused on the administrators and their opinions of the IS, the work situation and the merger in general. These issues were investigated before, during and after the merger. Both surveys and interviews were used to collect data, to which were added documents that both describe and guide the merger process; in this way we aimed at a triangulation of findings. Administrators were chosen as the focus of the study since public organizations are highly dependent on this staff category, forming the backbone of the organization and whose performance is a key success factor for the organization. Reliable and effective IS are also critical for maintaining a functional and effective organization, and this makes administrators highly dependent on their organizations’ IS for the ability to carry out their duties as intended. The case-study has confirmed the administrators’ dependency on IS that work well. A merger is likely to lead to changes in the IS and the routines associated with the administrators’ work. Hence it was especially interesting to study how the administrators viewed the merger and its consequences for IS and the work situation. The overall research objective is to find key issues for successful mergers and PMIs. The first explorative study in 2008 showed that the administrators were confident of their skills and knowledge of IS and had no fear of having to learn new IS due to the merger. Most administrators had an academic background and were not anxious about whether IS training would be given or not. Before the merger the administrators were positive and enthusiastic towards the merger and also to the changes that they expected. The studies carried out before the merger showed that these administrators were very satisfied with the information provided about the merger. This information was disseminated through various channels and even negative information and postponed decisions were quickly distributed. The study conflicts with the theories that have found that resistance to change is inevitable in a merger. Shortly after the merger the (third) study showed disappointment with the fact that fewer changes than expected had been implemented even if the changes that actually were carried out sometimes led to a more problematic work situation. This was seen to be more prominent for routine changes than IS changes. Still the administrators showed a clear willingness to change and to share their knowledge with new colleagues. This knowledge sharing (also tacit) worked well in the merger and the PMI. The majority reported that the most common way to learn to use new ISs and to apply new routines was by asking help from colleagues. They also needed to take responsibility for their own training and development. Five months after the merger (the fourth study) the administrators had become worried about the changes in communication strategy that had been implemented in the new university. This was perceived as being more anonymous. Furthermore, it was harder to get to know what was happening and to contact the new decision makers. The administrators found that decisions, and the authority to make decisions, had been moved to a higher administrative level than they were accustomed to. A directive management style is recommended in mergers in order to achieve a quick transition without distracting from the core business. A merger process may be tiresome and require considerable effort from the participants. In addition, not everyone can make their voice heard during a merger and consensus is not possible in every question. It is important to find out what is best for the new organization instead of simply claiming that the tried and tested methods of doing things should be implemented. A major problem turned out to be the lack of management continuity during the merger process. Especially problematic was the situation in the IS-department with many substitute managers during the whole merger process (even after the merger was carried out). This meant that no one was in charge of IS-issues and the PMI of IS. Moreover, the top managers were appointed very late in the process; in some cases after the merger was carried out. This led to missed opportunities for building trust and management credibility was heavily affected. The administrators felt neglected and that their competences and knowledge no longer counted. This, together with a reduced and altered information flow, led to rumours and distrust. Before the merger the administrators were convinced that their achievements contributed value to their organizations and that they worked effectively. After the merger they were less sure of their value contribution and effectiveness even if these factors were not totally discounted. The fifth study in November 2011 found that the administrators were still satisfied with their IS as they had been throughout the whole study. Furthermore, they believed that the IS department had done a good job despite challenging circumstances. Both the former organizations lacked IS strategies, which badly affected the IS strategizing during the merger and the PMI. IS strategies deal with issues like system ownership; namely who should pay and who is responsible for maintenance and system development, for organizing system training for new IS, and for effectively run IS even during changing circumstances (e.g. more users). A proactive approach is recommended for IS strategizing to work. This is particularly true during a merger and PMI for handling issues about what ISs should be adopted and implemented in the new organization, issues of integration and reengineering of IS-related processes. In the new university an ITstrategy had still not been decided 26 months after the new university was established. The study shows the importance of the decisive management of IS in a merger requiring that IS issues are addressed in the merger process and that IS decisions are made early. Moreover, the new management needs to be appointed early in order to work actively with the IS-strategizing. It is also necessary to build trust and to plan and make decisions about integration of IS and people.

Teoriaosassa tutkittiin mäskin muodostumista oluentuotantoprosessissa, ligniiniä ja sen pilkkoutumista hapetuksella, eri kehittyneitä hapetusmenetelmiä ja hapetuksella saatavia potentiaalisia pääkomponentteja. Kehittyneissä hapetusmenetelmissä keskityttiin pääasiassa pulssitettuun koronapurkaukseen perustuvaan PCD-menetelmään (Pulsed Corona Discharge). Tutkittavana pääkomponenttina toimi glyoksyylihappo. Työn kokeellisessa osassa tutkittiin mäskistä erotetun ligniinin pilkkoutumista PCD-hapetuksella. Tässä menetelmässä hapetus perustuu sähköpurkauksen aikana syntyvien hydroksyyliradikaalien ja otsonin muodostumiseen, jotka voivat toimia hapettimina. Kokeissa käytettiin oluentuotannosta saatua mäskiä, josta ligniiniä liuotettiin natriumhydroksidi-vesi-liuoksen avulla uuttamalla.. Tämän jälkeen liuosta käsiteltiin PCD laitteistossa. PCD-käsiteltyä tuotetta analysoitiin mittaamalla ligniinin ja aldehydien pitoisuudet siitä spektrofotometrin avulla. Työn tarkoituksena on tutkia PCD hapetusmenetelmän soveltuvuutta mäskin sisältämän ligniinin muokkaamiseen siten, että siitä syntyvää tuotetta voitaisiin käyttää jossakin muussa sovelluksessa, kuten esimerkiksi lääkkeiden raaka-aineena lääketeollisuudessa. PCD hapetusmenetelmä on koronasähköpurkauksiin perustuva laite, jota käytetään pääasiassa vedenpuhdistuksessa hajoittamaan haitallisia orgaanisia yhdisteitä. Tämän työn perusteella ligniiniä hajosi, aldehydejä muodostui ja hapetusnäytteiden pH laski hapetusajan kasvaessa. Tämä viittasi vahvasti glyoksyylihapon muodostumiseen PCD-laitteistossa.

The Travel and Tourism field is undergoing changes due to the rapid development of information technology and digital services. Online travel has profoundly changed the way travel and tourism organizations interact with their customers. Mobile technology such as mobile services for pocket devices (e.g. mobile phones) has the potential to take this development even further. Nevertheless, many issues have been highlighted since the early days of mobile services development (e.g. the lack of relevance, ease of use of many services). However, the wide adoption of smartphones and the mobile Internet in many countries as well as the formation of so-called ecosystems between vendors of mobile technology indicate that many of these issues have been overcome. Also when looking at the numbers of downloaded applications related to travel in application stores like Google Play, it seems obvious that mobile travel and tourism services are adopted and used by many individuals. However, as business is expected to start booming in the mobile era, many issues have a tendency to be overlooked. Travelers are generally on the go and thus services that work effectively in mobile settings (e.g. during a trip) are essential. Hence, the individuals’ perceived drivers and barriers to use mobile travel and tourism services in on-site or during trip settings seem particularly valuable to understand; thus this is one primary aim of the thesis. We are, however, also interested in understanding different types of mobile travel service users. Individuals may indeed be very different in their propensity to adopt and use technology based innovations (services). Research is also switching more from investigating issues of mobile service development to understanding individuals’ usage patterns of mobile services. But designing new mobile services may be a complex matter from a service provider perspective. Hence, our secondary aim is to provide insights into drivers and barriers of mobile travel and tourism service development from a holistic business model perspective. To accomplish the research objectives seven different studies have been conducted over a time period from 2002 – 2013. The studies are founded on and contribute to theories within diffusion of innovations, technology acceptance, value creation, user experience and business model development. Several different research methods are utilized: surveys, field and laboratory experiments and action research. The findings suggest that a successful mobile travel and tourism service is a service which supports one or several mobile motives (needs) of individuals such as spontaneous needs, time-critical arrangements, efficiency ambitions, mobility related needs (location features) and entertainment needs. The service could be customized to support travelers’ style of traveling (e.g. organized travel or independent travel) and should be easy to use, especially easy to take into use (access, install and learn) during a trip, without causing security concerns and/or financial risks for the user. In fact, the findings suggest that the most prominent barrier to the use of mobile travel and tourism services during a trip is an individual’s perceived financial cost (entry costs and usage costs). It should, however, be noted that regulations are put in place in the EU regarding data roaming prices between European countries and national telecom operators are starting to see ‘international data subscriptions’ as a sales advantage (e.g. Finnish Sonera provides a data subscription in the Baltic and Nordic region at the same price as in Finland), which will enhance the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services also in international contexts. In order to speed up the adoption rate travel service providers could consider e.g. more local initiatives of free Wi-Fi networks, development of services that can be used, at least to some extent, in an offline mode (do not require costly network access during a trip) and cooperation with telecom operators (e.g. lower usage costs for travelers who use specific mobile services or travel with specific vendors). Furthermore, based on a developed framework for user experience of mobile trip arrangements, the results show that a well-designed mobile site and/or native application, which preferably supports integration with other mobile services, is a must for true mobile presence. In fact, travel service providers who want to build a relationship with their customers need to consider a downloadable native application, but in order to be found through the mobile channel and make contact with potential new customers, a mobile website should be available. Moreover, we have made a first attempt with cluster analysis to identify user categories of mobile services in a travel and tourism context. The following four categories were identified: info-seekers, checkers, bookers and all-rounders. For example “all-rounders”, represented primarily by individuals who use their pocket device for almost any of the investigated mobile travel services, constituted primarily of 23 to 50 year old males with high travel frequency and great online experience. The results also indicate that travel service providers will increasingly become multi-channel providers. To manage multiple online channels, closely integrated and hybrid online platforms for different devices, supporting all steps in a traveler process should be considered. It could be useful for travel service providers to focus more on developing browser-based mobile services (HTML5-solutions) than native applications that work only with specific operating systems and for specific devices. Based on an action research study and utilizing a holistic business model framework called STOF we found that HTML5 as an emerging platform, at least for now, has some limitations regarding the development of the user experience and monetizing the application. In fact, a native application store (e.g. Google Play) may be a key mediator in the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services both from a traveler and a service provider perspective. Moreover, it must be remembered that many device and mobile operating system developers want service providers to specifically create services for their platforms and see native applications as a strategic advantage to sell more devices of a certain kind. The mobile telecom industry has moved into a battle of ecosystems where device makers, developers of operating systems and service developers are to some extent forced to choose their development platforms.

Suomalainen julkisen sektorin asiakaspalvelu elää tällä hetkellä merkittävää murrosvaihetta. Julkisesta asiakaspalvelusta on tehty kansainvälisestikin vain vähän tieteellistä tutkimusta, ja tähän asti tehty tutkimus on keskittynyt pääasiassa valtiollisiin toimijoihin. Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkittiin virtuaalisen asiakaspalvelun soveltuvuutta ja potentiaalisia tuottavuushyötyjä kuntaorganisaatiolle. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää millainen virtuaalinen asiakaspalvelun toimintamalli soveltuu nimenomaan kuntaorganisaatiolle. Tutkimus toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena tapaustutkimuksena, ja tutkimuskohteena oli Oulun kaupunki. Tutkimuksen empiirinen osa toteutettiin puolistrukturoituna teemahaastatteluna. Haastateltavana oli Oulun kaupungin työntekijöitä sellaisilta toimialoilta, jotka joko asioivat kuntalaisten kanssa suoraan tai osallistuvat kuntalaisille suunnatun asiakaspalvelun kehittämiseen. Tutkimus osoitti, että kuntaorganisaatiolle soveltuva virtuaalinen asiakaspalvelun toimintamalli ottaa huomioon kuntakontekstin erityispiirteet, automatisoi helpot tehtävät ja mahdollistaa tehokkaan resurssien käytön ohjaamalla asiakaspalvelukontaktit automaattisesti ja paikkariippumattomasti vapaana olevalle asiakaspalvelijalle. Virtuaalisen asiakaspalvelun pitää olla vaikuttavaa sekä kuntalaiselle että kuntaorganisaatiolle. Toimintamallin tulee vastata tietoturvan ja tietosuojan vaatimuksiin, jotta sitä voidaan soveltaa kattavasti volyymipalveluissa, joista on potentiaalisesti saavutettavissa suurimmat hyödyt. Toimintamallin tulee olla toimialariippumaton ja helposti monistettavissa mittakaavahyötyjen aikaansaamiseksi.

Biomedical natural language processing (BioNLP) is a subfield of natural language processing, an area of computational linguistics concerned with developing programs that work with natural language: written texts and speech. Biomedical relation extraction concerns the detection of semantic relations such as protein-protein interactions (PPI) from scientific texts. The aim is to enhance information retrieval by detecting relations between concepts, not just individual concepts as with a keyword search. In recent years, events have been proposed as a more detailed alternative for simple pairwise PPI relations. Events provide a systematic, structural representation for annotating the content of natural language texts. Events are characterized by annotated trigger words, directed and typed arguments and the ability to nest other events. For example, the sentence “Protein A causes protein B to bind protein C” can be annotated with the nested event structure CAUSE(A, BIND(B, C)). Converted to such formal representations, the information of natural language texts can be used by computational applications. Biomedical event annotations were introduced by the BioInfer and GENIA corpora, and event extraction was popularized by the BioNLP'09 Shared Task on Event Extraction. In this thesis we present a method for automated event extraction, implemented as the Turku Event Extraction System (TEES). A unified graph format is defined for representing event annotations and the problem of extracting complex event structures is decomposed into a number of independent classification tasks. These classification tasks are solved using SVM and RLS classifiers, utilizing rich feature representations built from full dependency parsing. Building on earlier work on pairwise relation extraction and using a generalized graph representation, the resulting TEES system is capable of detecting binary relations as well as complex event structures. We show that this event extraction system has good performance, reaching the first place in the BioNLP'09 Shared Task on Event Extraction. Subsequently, TEES has achieved several first ranks in the BioNLP'11 and BioNLP'13 Shared Tasks, as well as shown competitive performance in the binary relation Drug-Drug Interaction Extraction 2011 and 2013 shared tasks. The Turku Event Extraction System is published as a freely available open-source project, documenting the research in detail as well as making the method available for practical applications. In particular, in this thesis we describe the application of the event extraction method to PubMed-scale text mining, showing how the developed approach not only shows good performance, but is generalizable and applicable to large-scale real-world text mining projects. Finally, we discuss related literature, summarize the contributions of the work and present some thoughts on future directions for biomedical event extraction. This thesis includes and builds on six original research publications. The first of these introduces the analysis of dependency parses that leads to development of TEES. The entries in the three BioNLP Shared Tasks, as well as in the DDIExtraction 2011 task are covered in four publications, and the sixth one demonstrates the application of the system to PubMed-scale text mining.

This thesis examines the determinants of financial leverage ratio of large publicly listed companies within Nordic Telecom sector. The study is done as a case study and it covers 5 case companies headquartered in Nordic countries during period of 2002 - 2014 and by using restated values of quarterly observations from each case company’s interim reports. The chosen hypotheses are tested with multiple linear regressions firm by firm. The Findings of the study showed that uniqueness of Telecom sector and the region of our sample could not provide us unequivocal determinants of leverage ratio within the sector. However, e.g. Pecking order theory’s statement of Liquidity was widely confirmed by 3 out of 5 case companies which is worth to be taken into account in the big picture. The findings also showed that theories and earlier empirical evidence are confirmed by our case companies individually and non-systematically. Though Telecom sector is considered as quite unique industry and we did not discover absolute common relationships that would have held through all the Nordic case companies, we got unique and valuable evidence to conduct the research of this sector in future.

Tutkimus keskittyy brändin luomiseen ja brändin kokonaisvaltaisen hallinnan keinoihin kiinteistönvälitysalalla. Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää miten yritykset hyödyntävät brändipääomiaan brändiä vahvistettaessa ja uudistettaessa. Tätä kysymystä pyritään tarkastelemaan erityisesti kahden case-yhtiön näkökulmasta, jotka molemmat toimivat kiinteistönvälitysalalla. Tutkimuksen pääongelmaksi muodostui kysymys: ”Mitä tekijöitä tulisi huomioida brändipääoman vahvistamisessa ja uudistamisessa kiinteistönvälitysalalla toimivissa yrityksissä?”. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen eli kvalitatiivinen tutkimus. Laadullinen tutkimus pohjaa läheisesti teorian ja empirian väliseen vuorovaikutukseen ja sen lähtökohtana on pyrkiä kuvaamaan tutkimuskysymystä kokonaisvaltaisesti. Laadullisen tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on myös löytää tai tuoda esille tosiasioita sen sijaan, että todennettaisiin jo olemassa olevia väittämiä (Hirsijärvi, Remes & Sajavaara 2000, 152). Tutkimusmetodina aineiston keräämisessä käytettiin tutkimushaastattelua, joka toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena. Tapaustutkimukselle tyypillisesti haastattelu oli puolistrukturoitu, joten haastateltavat vastasivat tutkijan esittämiin kysymyksiin, jotka olivat samat molemmille haastateltaville, mutta keskustelua ei rajoitettu. Huoneistokeskuksen edustajan mukaan brändejä pitää tarpeen tullen uudistaa, mutta se ei saa olla itsetarkoituksena. Mikäli brändi on brändijohtaja alallaan, ei suuria muutoksia kannata lähteä tekemään vain tekemisen vuoksi, vaan niille pitää olla jokin selvä tarkoitus. Brändin viestin vahvistaminen onkin brändijohtajana toimivalle yritykselle usein parempi ratkaisu, kuin toimivan konseptin uudistaminen. Huoneistokeskus pyrkiikin varmistamaan sen, että brändin viesti ei pääse unohtumaan asiakkailta. Huom!:in liiketoimintajohtajan mukaan brändiä uudistettaessa on tärkeää, että brändiä konkreettisesti muutetaan. Huom! onkin tästä syystä positioinut itsensä aikaisemmasta poiketen edelläkävijäksi pitkäikäisyyden painottamisen sijaan. Huom! on myös painottanut entistä enemmän laadukkuuttaan ja avoimuuttaan ja nämä pyritään osoittamaan verkkosivujen asiakasarvosteluilla. Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että molemmat yritykset pitävät kaikkia brändipääomatekijöitä tärkeinä kiinteistönvälitysalalla. Tästä huolimatta brändiä vahvistettaessa Huoneistokeskuksen edustaja oli sitä mieltä, että tärkeintä on keskittyä brändin tunnettuuteen. Huom!:in edustaja sen sijaan oli sitä mieltä, että brändiä uudistettaessa tärkeintä on keskittyä laadun tuottamiseen ja yhdistämään tämä myös mielleyhtymäksi. Haastateltavia oli kuitenkin vain kaksi, joten tutkimuksen johtopäätöksiä ei voida yleistää koskemaan koko toimialaa.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää miten tuotannon työnjohto voi osaltaan vaikuttaa henkilöstön työmotivaatioon hyödyntämällä suorituskyvyn mittaamista. Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto on hankittu haastattelemalla työnjohtoa ja suorittamalla kyselytutkimus tuotannon henkilöstölle. Yritykset mittaavat menestystekijöidensä suorituskykyä erilaisilla mittareilla, mutta usein mittaamisesta saatavaa tietoa ei osata hyödyntää parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla. Suorituskyvyn mittaamisen on muututtava suorituskyvyn johtamiseksi, jotta siitä on hyötyä yrityksen toiminnan kannalta. Suorituskyvyn johtamisessa mittaustuloksia tulkitaan ja niiden perusteella tehdään toimenpiteitä. Työmotivaatio vaikuttaa oleellisesti henkilöstön suoritukseen, joten on tärkeää, että työmotivaatioon kiinnitetään yrityksissä huomiota. Suorituskyvyn mittaamisella on mahdollista vaikuttaa työmotivaation taustalla oleviin tekijöihin, joiden avulla työmotivaatio paranee. Näitä tekijöitä ovat tavoitteiden asettaminen, selkeä viestiminen, palkitseminen ja vaikutusmahdollisuudet. Muita työmotivaatioon vaikuttavia tekijöitä ovat työympäristö ja kehittyminen työssä. Työnjohdon tehtävänä on hyödyntää mittaustietoa tuotannon henkilöstön johtamisessa.
