Feasibility of creosote treatment for glued-laminated pine-timber railway sleepers

This article studies the possibility of using market available glued-laminated timber (GLT) based on melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) adhesives as an alternative to traditional solid timber sleepers. The study comprised an examination of the effect of creosote treatment on the short-term and durability after accelerated aging of the glue lines (delamination and shear strength) and the potential for full sapwood penetration by the creosote. Creosote treatment showed a negative effect on shear strength and delamination, more severe in the nonstructural than the structural GLT specimens tested. Full penetration of creosote into the sapwood was not achieved. GLT elements based on MUF adhesives can be considered an alternative to solid wood sleepers if specific grading of lamellas, proper treatment schedule, and highly controlled factory production are implemented.

MCDA applied to performance appraisal of short-haul truck drivers: a case study in a portuguese trucking company

Performance appraisal increasingly assumes a more important role in any organizational environment. In the trucking industry, drivers are the company's image and for this reason it is important to develop and increase their performance and commitment to the company's goals. This paper aims to create a performance appraisal model for trucking drivers, based on a multi-criteria decision aid methodology. The PROMETHEE and MMASSI methodologies were adapted using the criteria used for performance appraisal by the trucking company studied. The appraisal involved all the truck drivers, their supervisors and the company's Managing Director. The final output is a ranking of the drivers, based on their performance, for each one of the scenarios used. The results are to be used as a decision-making tool to allocate drivers to the domestic haul service.

Critical Velocity obtained using Simplified Models of the Railway Track: Viability and Applicability

Increased demands on the capacity of the railway network gave rise to new issues related to the dynamic response of railway tracks subjected to moving vehicles. Thus, it becomes important to evaluate the applicability of traditionally used simplified models which have a closed form solution. Regarding simplified models, transversal vibrations of a beam on a visco-elastic foundation subjected to a moving load are considered. Governing equations are obtained by Hamilton’s principle. Shear distortion, rotary inertia and effect of axial force are accounted for. The load is introduced as a time varying force moving at a constant velocity. Transversal vibrations induced by the load are solved by the normal-mode analysis. Reflected waves at the extremities of the full beam are avoided by introduction of semi-infinite elements. Firstly, the critical velocity obtained from this model is compared with results of an undamped Euler- Bernoulli formulation with zero axial force. Metodologias no Controlo de Compactação em Aterros

O presente trabalho pretende abordar aspectos relacionados com o controlo de compactação em aterros, com base na avaliação de parâmetros “in situ”, tais como: pesos volúmicos, teores em água, graus de compactação e módulos de deformabilidade. Recorrendo aos métodos correntes no controlo de compactação, como o ensaio de carga em placa, gamadensímetro, garrafa e ao ensaio de deflectómetro de impacto portátil. Visa-se comparar os resultados obtidos, nas diferentes condições, de modo a possibilitar alcançar correlações entre os ensaios, bem como determinar aqueles que apresentam maior grau de confiança técnico e vantagens operacionais e económicas. De modo a garantir os índices de qualidade da obra é necessário fazer cumprir os critérios exigidos pelo caderno de encargos, nomeadamente nos parâmetros de avaliação do controlo de compactação, para que estas satisfaçam o seu estado funcional e estrutural. Neste tipo de obras os cadernos de encargos de referência em Portugal são os das Estradas de Portigal (EP) e da Brisa, Auto-estradas de Portugal (Brisa), os quais se baseiam em recomendações de classificações de solos. No contexto experimental, foram efectuados dois estudos com condições e materiais diferentes, em obras pertencentes à empresa Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construções, S.A. Nas campanhas de ensaios foram realizados ensaios “in situ” na obra da Subconcessão do Douro Interior – Lote 6 – IC5 – Troço Murça/ Nó de Pombal nas camadas de sub-base e base num agregado de granulometria extensa, e na obra de modernização do troço ferroviário Bombel e Vidigal a Évora, em solos.

The purpose of this foreign market research, carried out for COFACO, is to highlight the main key aspects of the current German seafood market, founded out through a deep analysis. Moreover, the work project is also aimed to give the company suggestions regarding the Brand, the Product and the Distribution strategy to implement in order to succeed, once considered the opportunity to enter the market.
