A cross-sectional study was carried out among 996 volunteer blood donors enrolled from May 1999 to December 1999 to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection among volunteer blood donors of the Regional Blood Bank of Londrina, State of Paraná, Brazil, and to evaluate whether the rate of seroprevalence of IgG anti-HEV antibodies is associated with sociodemographic variables and with seropositivity for hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection. All participants answered the questionnaire regarding the sociodemographic characterisitcs. Serum samples were tested for IgG antibodies to HEV (anti-HEV) by an enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA). All serum samples positive for anti-HEV IgG and 237 serum samples negative for anti-HEV were also assayed for IgG anti-HAV antibodies by ELISA. Anti-HEV IgG was confirmed in 23/996 samples, resulting in a seroprevalence of 2.3% for HEV infection, similar to previous results obtained in developed countries. No significant association was found between the presence of anti-HEV IgG antibodies and the sociodemographic variables including gender, age, educational level, rural or urban areas, source of water, and sewer system (p > 0.05). Also, no association with seropositivity for anti-HAV IgG antibodies was observed (p > 0.05). Although this study revealed a low seroprevalence of HEV infection in the population evaluated, the results showed that this virus is circulating among the population from Londrina, South Brazil, and point out the need of further studies to define the clinical and epidemiological importance of HEV infection and to identify additional risk factors involved in the epidemiology and pathogenesis of this infection in this population.

Over the last decades the age redistribution group of the population worldwide has been presenting an increasing number of people aged 65 years or more, incorporating a population group commonly referred to as the elderly population. It´s important to further analyze the physiological mechanisms that lead to aging and how they might influence not only clinical aspects, but also nutritional, among others, with the perspective of their origin in the onset of chronic diseases. With this approach, malnutrition in the elderly is now considered by the European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA) a public health problem. It is reported that its prevalence is around 60% at the level of hospital units, 40% in residential units and 5 to 10% in the elderly living in their own home or family's, and mostly remains to diagnose and treat. The aim of this study was to characterize and estimate the prevalence of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition in the elderly, in the first 72 hours of hospital admission. We applied an observational, analytical, cross-sectional and correlacional quantitative type of study and data were collected by interview and observation itself. The study was developed in two lines of research: one focused on the characterization of malnutrition in elderly institutionalized in Portuguese hospitals, in the central and southern mainland and Madeira, in the periods between July - August 2009, April - June 2010, May - July 2011, through the MNA®; and the other: a detailed nutritional assessment, conducted in Hospital Lisbon Center - Hospital de Santa Marta, EPE, between early January 2009 and late January 2010, and the sample was recruited from among the elderly of both sexes at hospital admission. We studied intensively sociodemographic, health and nutritional assessment done extensive. Nutritional evaluation consisted of harvesting different parameters: hematological, biochemical and anthropometric (body mass index (BMI), triceps skinfold (TSF), sub-scapular skinfold (SSF), arm circumference (AC), arm muscle area (AMA), geminal perimeter (GP), analysis of body composition (Fat Mass (FM), Fat Free Mass (FFM)), characterization of a daily food type and Mini Nutritional Assessment Long Form® questionnaire - MNA LF®. Form the data obtained in Portuguese hospitals, it is noteworthy that of the 402 patients included, 53% were male, had a mean age of 75,8 + 6,52 (65 - 100) and, according to the MNA®, 57,5% were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. In the sample, from the sociodemographic data obtained, we saw that 50% of patients were male, the average age was around 75,5 + 7,22 years (65-100), 55% were from Lisbon and 80 %lived in Lisbon, 38% had no formal education and 43% did so only until the 4th grade. Regarding health data, the majorities of patients were admitted through the ER of Hospital Lisbon Center - S. José Hospital - and were admitted to the Medicine Unit (38%) and to the Cardiology Unit (30%), by medical pathology (38%) and circulatory system disease (56%). In regard to lifestyle, and considering mobility, one third of patients were bedridden and the rest were ambulating or had a normal mobility. 74% had no regular ethanol habits, 19% had a high intake (> 30 g ethanol / day); 95% of the patients had no smoking habits. Regarding nutritional assessment, the mean values for laboratory parameters proved inferior to standard values for age and sex and were lower in females. In anthropometric assessment these were the findings: BMI calculation showed to be scarcely sensitive in the identification of undernourished patients; the TSF and SSF revealed values of fat mass within the normal range; in AC, 88% did not have an indicative value of malnutrition and 8% were malnourished; in AMA, 97% of men and 95% women had a deficit of lean mass and in GP, 18% had a value of less than the 31cm malnutrition descriptor. In body composition analysis found that both sexes showed a percentage of FM ranked too high and this was higher in women compared to men. By analyzing the nutritional intake was found that this was less than the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for water intake (p=0,00), energy (p=0,00), protein (p=0,00), lipid (p=0,01), MUFA (p=0,00), PUFA (p=0,00), carbohydrates (p=0,00), fiber (p=0,02), potassium (p=0,00), calcium (p=0,00), magnesium (p=0,00), phosphorus (p=0,00), zinc (p=0,00), vitamin D (p=0,00), vitamin E (p=0,00) and folate (p=0,00). Regarding MNA®, its application identified 62% of cases of nutritional risk or malnutrition already installed. MNA® values indicative of malnutrition or risk were associated with lower levels of education (r=0,32; p=0,00). There was a correlation between the MNA ® and TSF (r =0,30, p = 0,00), SFF (r = 0,19, p = 0,03) and GP (r=0,27, p = 0,00). In the analysis of the sample by gender and age group, the highlight was in older women who had BMI status indicator of malnutrition risk (BMI <23,5 + 2,9 (r=0,42;p=0,02)) and mean values of AC 25,6 +3,84cm (r=0,42; p=0,01), in situations characterized by low mobility MNA®. Older men showed a correlation between the MNA® and SFF (r = 0,41; p = 0,02), AMA (r = 0,57; p = 0,00) and GP (r=0,55;p=0,00), and in older women only TSF showed a correlation(r = 0,39; p =0,02). Multivariate analysis of the MNA® by gender and age group, revealed that they are independent. The men had MNA® mean superior to women, and as the age increases, the values of MNA® in both sexes declined, being indicative of risk of malnutrition. We believe that, given the nature and objectives of the present study, it allowed us to characterize and estimate the prevalence of risk of malnutrition and malnutrition in older people during the first 72 hours of hospital admission. The results indicate a high prevalence and point to the need for protocol procedures of nutritional assessment and intervention in the elderly population at hospital admission. For this purpose the application of MNA® has proved its applicability, as well as measuring and calculating AMA, which may be applied in early stages thus contributing to enhance health state improvements and to shorten the time of hospitalization, particularly in elderly people. In relation to dietary pattern, this study contributed to call of attention from health professionals that the elderly may have nutritional deficiencies on admission, and that these are not properly marked and addressed tend to worsen during hospitalization may contribute to increased morbidity.

Positioning technologies are becoming ubiquitous and are being used more and more frequently for supporting a large variety of applica- tions. For outdoor applications, global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs), such as the global positioning system (GPS), are the most common and popular choice because of their wide coverage. GPS is also augmented with network-based systems that exploit existing wireless and mobile networks for providing positioning functions where GPS is not available or to save energy in battery-powered devices. Indoors, GNSSs are not a viable solution, but many applications require very accurate, fast, and exible positioning, tracking, and navigation functions. These and other requirements have stim- ulated research activities, in both industry and academia, where a variety of fundamental principles, techniques, and sensors are being integrated to provide positioning functions to many applications. The large majority of positioning technologies is for indoor environments, and most of the existing commercial products have been developed for use in of ce buildings, airports, shopping malls, factory plants, and similar spaces. There are, however, other spaces where positioning, tracking, and navigation systems play a central role in safety and in rescue operations, as well as in supporting speci c activities or for scienti c research activities in other elds. Among those spaces are underground tunnels, mines, and even underwater wells and caves. This chapter describes the research efforts over the past few years that have been put into the development of positioning systems for underground tun- nels, with particular emphasis in the case of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), where localiza- tion aims at enabling more automatic and unmanned radiation surveys. Examples of positioning and localization systems that have been devel- oped in the past few years for underground facilities are presented in the fol- lowing section, together with a brief characterization of those spaces’ special conditions and the requirements of some of the most common applications. Section 5.2 provides a short overview of some of the most representative research efforts that are currently being carried out by many research teams around the world. In addition, some of the fundamental principles and tech- niques are identi ed, such as the use of leaky coaxial cables, as used at the LHC. In Section 5.3, we introduce the speci c environment of the LHC and de ne the positioning requirements for the envisaged application. This is followed by a detailed description of our approach and the results that have been achieved so far. Some last comments and remarks are presented in a nal section.

From the last decades the use and development of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Satellite Positioning Systems (GPS) is highly promoted in cropping systems. Such technologies allow measuring spatial variability of site properties including electrical conductivity and others soil features as well as their impact on the spatial variability of yields. Therefore, site-specific management could be applied to improve the efficiency in the use of agrochemicals, the environmental protection, and the sustainability of the rural life. Currently, there is a wide offer of technological resources to capture spatial variation across sites within field. However, the optimum use of data coming from the precision agriculture machineries strongly depends on the capabilities to explore the information about the complex interactions underlying the productive outputs. The covariation between spatial soil properties and yields from georeferenced data has been treated in a graphical manner or with standard geostatistical approaches. New statistical modeling capabilities from the Mixed Linear Model framework are promising to deal with correlated data such those produced by the precision agriculture. Moreover, rescuing the multivariate nature of the multiple data collected at each site, several multivariate statistical approaches could be crucial tools for data analysis with georeferenced data. Understanding the basis of complex interactions at the scale of production field is now within reach the use of these new techniques. Our main objectives are: (1) to develop new statistical strategies, based on the complementarities of geostatistics and multivariate methods, useful to classify sites within field grown with grain crops and analyze the interrelationships of several soil and yield variables, (2) to propose mixed linear models to predict yield according spatial soil variability and to build contour maps to promote a more sustainable agriculture.

Abstract Background: Right-sided heart failure has high morbidity and mortality, and may be caused by pulmonary arterial hypertension. Fractal dimension is a differentiated and innovative method used in histological evaluations that allows the characterization of irregular and complex structures and the quantification of structural tissue changes. Objective: To assess the use of fractal dimension in cardiomyocytes of rats with monocrotaline-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension, in addition to providing histological and functional analysis. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups: control (C; n = 8) and monocrotaline-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (M; n = 8). Five weeks after pulmonary arterial hypertension induction with monocrotaline, echocardiography was performed and the animals were euthanized. The heart was dissected, the ventricles weighed to assess anatomical parameters, and histological slides were prepared and stained with hematoxylin/eosin for fractal dimension analysis, performed using box-counting method. Data normality was tested (Shapiro-Wilk test), and the groups were compared with non-paired Student t test or Mann Whitney test (p < 0.05). Results: Higher fractal dimension values were observed in group M as compared to group C (1.39 ± 0.05 vs. 1.37 ± 0.04; p < 0.05). Echocardiography showed lower pulmonary artery flow velocity, pulmonary acceleration time and ejection time values in group M, suggesting function worsening in those animals. Conclusion: The changes observed confirm pulmonary-arterial-hypertension-induced cardiac dysfunction, and point to fractal dimension as an effective method to evaluate cardiac morphological changes induced by ventricular dysfunction.

In an effort to meet its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol, in 2005 the European Union introduced a cap-and-trade scheme where mandated installations are allocated permits to emit CO2. Financial markets have developed that allow companies to trade these carbon permits. For the EU to achieve reductions in CO2 emissions at a minimum cost, it is necessary that companies make appropriate investments and policymakers design optimal policies. In an effort to clarify the workings of the carbon market, several recent papers have attempted to statistically model it. However, the European carbon market (EU ETS) has many institutional features that potentially impact on daily carbon prices (and associated nancial futures). As a consequence, the carbon market has properties that are quite different from conventional financial assets traded in mature markets. In this paper, we use dynamic model averaging (DMA) in order to forecast in this newly-developing market. DMA is a recently-developed statistical method which has three advantages over conventional approaches. First, it allows the coefficients on the predictors in a forecasting model to change over time. Second, it allows for the entire fore- casting model to change over time. Third, it surmounts statistical problems which arise from the large number of potential predictors that can explain carbon prices. Our empirical results indicate that there are both important policy and statistical bene ts with our approach. Statistically, we present strong evidence that there is substantial turbulence and change in the EU ETS market, and that DMA can model these features and forecast accurately compared to conventional approaches. From a policy perspective, we discuss the relative and changing role of different price drivers in the EU ETS. Finally, we document the forecast performance of DMA and discuss how this relates to the efficiency and maturity of this market.

Do intermediate goods help explain relative and aggregate productivity differences across countries? Three observations suggest they do: (i) intermediates are relatively expensive in poor countries; (ii) goods industries demand intermediates more intensively than service industries; (iii) goods industries are more prominent intermediate suppliers in poor countries. I build a standard multi-sector growth model accommodating these features to show that inefficient intermediate production strongly depresses aggregate labor productivity and increases the price ratio of final goods to services. Applying the model to data, low and high income countries in fact reveal similar relative efficiency levels between goods and services despite clear differences in relative sectoral labor productivity. Moreover, the main empirical exercise suggests that poorer countries are substantially less efficient at producing intermediate relative to final goods and services. Closing the cross-country efficiency gap in intermediate input production would strongly narrow the aggregate labor productivity difference across countries as well as turn final goods in poorer countries relatively cheap compared to services.

South Peak is a 7-Mm3 potentially unstable rock mass located adjacent to the 1903 Frank Slide on Turtle Mountain, Alberta. This paper presents three-dimensional numerical rock slope stability models and compares them with a previous conceptual slope instability model based on discontinuity surfaces identified using an airborne LiDAR digital elevation model (DEM). Rock mass conditions at South Peak are described using the Geological Strength Index and point load tests, whilst the mean discontinuity set orientations and characteristics are based on approximately 500 field measurements. A kinematic analysis was first conducted to evaluate probable simple discontinuity-controlled failure modes. The potential for wedge failure was further assessed by considering the orientation of wedge intersections over the airborne LiDAR DEM and through a limit equilibrium combination analysis. Block theory was used to evaluate the finiteness and removability of blocks in the rock mass. Finally, the complex interaction between discontinuity sets and the topography within South Peak was investigated through three-dimensional distinct element models using the code 3DEC. The influence of individual discontinuity sets, scale effects, friction angle and the persistence along the discontinuity surfaces on the slope stability conditions were all investigated using this code.

PhD graduates hold the highest education degree, are trained to conduct research and can be considered a key element in the creation, commercialization and diffusion of innovations. The impact of PhDs on innovation and economic development takes place through several channels such as the accumulation of scientific capital stock, the enhancement of technology transfers and the promotion of cooperation relationships in innovation processes. Although the placement of PhDs in industry provides a very important mechanism for transmitting knowledge from universities to firms, information about the characteristics of the firms that employ PhDs is very scarce. The goal of this paper is to improve understanding of the determinants of the demand for PhDs in the private sector. Three main potential determinants of the demand for PhDs are considered: cooperation between firms and universities, R&D activities of firms and several characteristics of firms, size, sector, productivity and age. The results from the econometric analysis show that cooperation between firms and universities encourages firms to recruit PhDs and point to the existence of accumulative effects in the hiring of PhD graduates.

Although an impressive array of efficacious antihypertensive agents are available to treat hypertension, the optimal use of these agents is limited by dose-related side-effect profiles. This is particularly the case for widely used first-line antihypertensive agents such as diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium antagonists, and alpha1-blockers; this represents a major therapeutic dilemma in treating hypertension. With the development of the angiotensin II receptor antagonists (AIIRAs), this dilemma might have been solved. Irbesartan is a long-acting AIIRA that provides dose-related efficacy with placebo-like tolerability at all clinical doses. The results of placebo and active-control trials of irbesartan have demonstrated that the agent is as effective as the leading members of major antihypertensive classes with respect to blood pressure control, while having superior tolerability. Pooled data from nine multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trials with irbesartan have documented no adverse events caused by dose-response. This feature could widen the traditionally narrow therapeutic window in the treatment of hypertension and point to the use of AIIRAs such as irbesartan as first-line therapy in the management of hypertension.
