Hybrid organic - inorganic nanocomposites doped with Fe-II and Fe-III ions and exhibiting interesting magnetic properties have been obtained by the sol - gel process. The hybrid matrix of these ormosils ( organically modified silicates), classed as di-ureasils and termed U( 2000), is composed of poly( oxyethylene) chains of variable length grafted to siloxane groups by means of urea crosslinkages. Iron perchlorate and iron nitrate were incorporated in the diureasil matrices, leading to compositions within the range 80 greater than or equal to n greater than or equal to 10, n being the molar ratio of ether-type O atoms per cation. The structure of the doped diureasils was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). For Fe-II-doped samples, SAXS results suggest the existence of a two-level hierarchical structure. The primary level is composed of spatially correlated siloxane clusters embedded in the polymeric matrix and the secondary, coarser level consists of domains where the siloxane clusters are segregated. The structure of Fe-III-doped hybrids is different, revealing the existence of iron oxide based nanoclusters, identified as ferrihydrite by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, dispersed in the hybrid matrix. The magnetic susceptibility of these materials was determined by zero-field-cooling and field-cooling procedures as functions of both temperature and field. The different magnetic features between Fe-II- and Fe-III-doped samples are consistent with the structural differences revealed by SAXS. While Fe-II-doped composites exhibit a paramagnetic Curie-type behaviour, hybrids containing Fe-III ions show thermal and field irreversibilities.

Ti(IV), Zr(IV) and Pb(II) complexes with 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline (5-NQ) were obtained by precipitation in acetone/ammonium solution medium. The compounds TiO(C9H5N2O3)(2).0.5H(2)O, ZrO(C9H5N2O3)(2)2H(2)O and Pb(C9H5N2O3)(2) were characterized by Elemental Analysis, X-ray Diffratometry and Infrared Absorption Spectrometry and their thermal behavior followed by TG/DTA. This present study intends to show the variations in the thermal behavior of the compounds and in the composition and/or structure of final oxide residues, in different atmospheres and heating rates.

Silica gel with a surface area of 500 m2g-1 and an average pore diameter of 60 angstrom was chemically modified with Ti(IV) oxide using the grafting method. The amount of metal oxide attached to the surface was 1.8.10(-3) mol g-1. The X-ray photoelectron spectra showed that the metal ion species on the surface are Ti(IV) in TiO2 and MTiO3 (M = Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ and Pb2+), i.e. they have the binding energy of Ti2p3/2 = 458.7 eV. The dehydration of the solid at higher temperature increased the O(II)/Ti (O(II) = oxygen bound to titanium atom) ratio, presumably due to a reticulation of the hydrous Ti(IV) oxide on the silica surface at higher temperatures. Migration of Ti(IV) into the silica gel matrix was observed but the specific surface area was not significantly changed.

Tin on the oxide form, alone or doped with others metals, has been extensively used as gas sensor, thus, this work reports on the preparation and kinetic parameters regarding the thermal decomposition of Sn(II)-ethylenediaminetetraacetate as precursor to SnO2. Thus, the acquaintance with the kinetic model regarding the thermal decomposition of the tin complex may leave the door open to foresee, whether it is possible to get thin film of SnO2 using Sn(II)-EDTA as precursor besides the influence of dopants added. The Sn(II)-EDTA soluble complex was prepared in aqueous medium by adding of tin(II) chloride acid solution to equimolar amount of ammonium salt from EDTA under N-2 atmosphere and temperature of 50degreesC arising the pH similar to 4. The compound was crystallized in ethanol at low-temperature and filtered to eliminate the chloride ions, obtaining the heptacoordinated chelate with the composition H2SnH2O(CH2N(CH2COO)(2))(2).0.5H(2)O.Results from TG, DTG and DSC curves under inert and oxidizing atmospheres indicate the presence of water coordinated to the metal and that the ethylenediamine fraction is thermally more stable than carboxylate groups. The final residue from thermal decomposition was the SnO2 characterized by X-ray as a tetragonal rutile phase.Applying the isoconversional Wall-Flynn-Ozawa method on the DSC curves, average activation energy: E-a = 183.7 +/- 12.7 and 218.9 +/- 2.1 kJ mol(-1), and pre-exponential factor: log A = 18.85 +/- 0.27 and 19.10 +/- 0.27 min(-1), at 95% confidence level, could be obtained, regarding the loss of coordinated water and thermal decomposition of the carboxylate groups, respectively. The E-a and logA also could be obtained applying isoconventional Wall-Flynn method on the TG curves. From E-a and log A values, Dollimore and Malek procedures could be applied suggesting R3 (contracting volume) and SB (two-parameter model) as the kinetic model to the loss of coordinated water (177-244degreesC) and thermal decomposition of the carboxylate groups (283-315degreesC), respectively. Simulated and experimental normalized DTG and DSC curves besides analysis of residuals check these kinetic models. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glutamate-NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor activation within the periaqueductal gray (PAG) leads to antinociceptive, autonomic and behavioral responses characterized as the fear reaction. We have recently demonstrated that the vigorous defensive-like behaviors (e.g. jumping and running) and antinociception induced by intra-PAG injection of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) were completely blocked by prior infusion of N(omega)-propyl-L-arginine (NPLA), a specific neuronal nitric oxide synthesis (nNOS) enzyme inhibitor, into the same midbrain structure. It remains unclear however, whether the inhibition of nNOS within the mouse PAG changes the anxiety-like behavior per se or the effects of the inhibition of nNOS depend on the suppression of downstream of glutamate-NMDA receptor activation. This study investigated whether intra-PAG infusion of NPLA (i) attenuates anxiety in the elevated plus-maze (EPM) and (ii) antagonizes the anxiogenic-like effects induced by intra-PAG injection of NMDA. Test sessions were videotaped and subsequently scored for conventional indices of anxiety (percentage of open arm entries and percentage of open arm time) and locomotor activity (closed arm entries). Results showed that intra-PAG infusions of NPLA (0.2, 0.4 or 0.8 nmol/0.1 mu l) did not alter significantly any behavioral response in the EPM when compared to control group (Experiment 1). Intra-PAG infusion of NMDA (0 and 0.02 nmol/0.1 mu l; a dose that does not provoke vigorous defensive behaviors per se in mice) significantly reduced open arm exploration, confirming an anxiogenic-like effect (Experiment 2). When injected into the PAG 10 min prior local NMDA injection (0.02 nmol/0.1 mu l), NPLA (0.4 nmol/0.1 mu l) was able to revert the anxiogenic-like effect of glutamate-NMDA receptor activation. Neither intra-PAG infusion of NMDA nor NPLA altered closed arm entries, a widely used measure of locomotor activity in the EPM. These results suggest that intra-PAG nitric oxide synthesis does not play a role on anxiety-like behavior elicited during EPM exposure; however its synthesis is important for the proaversive effects produced by activation of glutamate-NMDA receptors located within this limbic midbrain structure. Two compounds [2tbpo·H+)2[CuCl4]= (yellow) and (2tbpo·H+)2[CuBr4]= (dark purple) (tbpo = tribenzylphosphine oxide) have been prepared and investigated by means of crystal structure, electronic, vibrational and ESR spectra. The crystal structure of the (2tbpo·H+)2[CuCl4]= complex was determined by three-dimensional X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the space group P42/n with unit-cell dimensions a = 19.585(2), c = 9.883(1)Å, V = 3790 (1)Å3, Z = 2, Dm = 1.303 (flotation) Dx = 1.302 Mg m-3. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by blocked full-matrix least-squares to R = 0.053 for 2583 observed reflections. Cu(II) is coordinated to four chlorides in a tetrahedral arrangement. Tribenzylphosphine oxide molecules, related by a centre of inversion, are connected by a short hydrogen bridge. Chemical analysis, electronic and vibrational spectra showed that the bromide compound is similar to the chloride one and can be formulated as (2tbpo·H+)2[CuBr4]=. The position of the dd transition bands, the charge transfer bands, the ESR and the vibrational spectra of both complexes are discussed. The results are compared with analogous complexes cited in the literature. © 1983.

The synthesis and crystal structure of two complexes resulting from interaction between NiBr2 and triphenylarsine oxide (Ph3AsO) is described. Green and orange complexes can be obtained from the blue, probably tetrahedral complex [NiBr2(Ph3AsO)2], depending on the solvents used for recrystallization. NiBr2·4[(C6H5)3AsO]·8H2O (green): M = 1650.2, P21/c, a = 13.731(2), b = 16.267(3), c = 17.647(2) Å, β = 112.04(1)°, V = 3651.4 Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 1.501 g cm-3, CuKα, λ = 1.54184 Å, μ = 38.67 cm-1, R = 0.039, 3741 unique reflections, 3203 with I > 3σ(I). NiBr2·4[(C6H5)3AsO]·3|2(C6H5CH3)·H2O (orange): M = 1663.7, P1, a = 12.647(8), b = 13.953(5), c = 22.853(6) Å, α = 90.91(3), β = 96.70(4), γ = 111.16(4)°, V = 3727.4 Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 1.482 g cm-3, MoKα, λ = 0.71073 Å, μ = 30.48 cm-1, R = 0.087, 8600 unique reflections, 4293 with I > 3σ(I). In the green complex the Ni(II) ion is sited on a center of symmetry and is octahedrally coordinated to six water molecules, hydrogen bonded to the Ph3AsO molecules and to the bromide anions forming a second coordination sphere in a nearly octahedral arrangement. In the orange complex the cation is pentacoordinated with the four oxygen atoms of the Ph3AsO ligands forming the basis of a tetragonal pyramid and with one Br- anion in the apical position. The absorption spectrum of the orange complex is compared with the spectra of other Ni(II) square pyramidal complexes described in the literature. © 1984.

The long-term administration of nitric oxide synthesis inhibitors induces arterial hypertension accompanied by left ventricular hypertrophy and myocardial ischemic lesions. Because the enhancement of sympathetic drive has been implicated in these phenomena, the current study was performed to determine the potency of β-adrenoceptor agonists and muscarinic agonists on the spontaneous rate of isolated right atria from rats given long-term treatment with the nitric oxide inhibitor N(ω)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). Atrial lesions induced by long-term treatment with L-NAME were also evaluated. Long-term L-NAME treatment caused a time-dependent, significant (P<0.05) increase in tail-cuff pressure compared with control animals. Our results showed that the potency of isoproterenol, norepinephrine, carbachol, and pilocarpine in isolated right atria from rats given long-term treatment with L-NAME for 7, 15, 30, and 60 days was not affected as compared with control animals. Addition of L-NAME in vitro (100 μmol/L) affected neither basal rate nor chronotropic response for isoproterenol and norepinephrine in rat heart. Stereological analysis of the right atria at 15 and 30 days revealed a significant increase on amount of fibrous tissues in L-NAME- treated groups (27±2.3% and 28±1.3% for 15 and 30 days, respectively; P<0.05) as compared with the control group (22±1.1%). Our results indicate that nitric oxide does not to interfere with β-adrenoceptor-mediated and muscarinic receptor-mediated chronotropic responses.

Mn(II) doped SnO2 thin films used for shielding fluoride glasses against corrosion were investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANE)S at the Sn and Mn K-edges. The effect of firing treatment on the densification of the films was studied. It has been evidenced a partial change of Mn valence from 2.3 to 2.6 upon heating which is attributed to a change of ratios of two Mn sites: grafted divalent Mn ions at the surface of SnO 2 nanocrystallites and trivalent Mn ions embedded into a substitutional solid solution with Sn. © Physica Scripta 2005.

As several structures of the central nervous system are involved in the control of hydromineral and cardiovascular balance we investigated whether the natriorhexigenic and pressor response induced by the injection of ANG II into the 3rd V could be mediated by vasopressinergic and nitrergic system. Male Holtzman rats weighing 200-250 g with cannulae implanted into the 3rd V were used. The drugs were injected in 0.5 μL over 30-60 sec. Controls were injected with a similar volume of 0.15 M NaCl. ANGII increased the water intake vs control. AVPA injected into 3rd V prior to ANGII decreased the dipsogenic effect of ANGII. L-arginine also decreased the water intake induced by ANGII. AVPA plus L-arginine inhibit the water intake induced by ANGII. 7NIT injected prior to ANGII potentiated the dipsogenic effect of ANGII. Pre-treatment with ANGII increased the sodium ingestion vs control. AVPA decreased the ANGII effect in sodium intake. L-arginine also decreased the natriorhexigenic effect of ANGII. The combination of L-arginine and AVPA inhibit the sodium intake induced by ANGII. 7NIT injected prior to ANGII potentiated the sodium intake induced by ANGII. ANGII induced an increase in Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) vs control. AVPA and L-arginine induced a decreased in the pressor effect of ANGII. The combination of L-arginine and AVPA inhibit the pressor effect of ANGII. 7NIT injected prior to ANGII into 3rd V potentiated the pressor effect of ANGII. These data suggest that arginine vasopressin V 1 receptors and Nitric Oxide (NO) within the circumventricular structures may be involved in sodium intake and pressor response induced by the activation of ANGII receptors within the circumventricular neurons. These studies revealed the involvement of sodium appetite by utilizing the angiotensinergic, vasopressinergic and nitrergic system in the central regulation of blood pressure. © 2006 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

This study present a novel NO sensor made of a spin trap (iron(II)-diethyldithiocarbamate complex, FeDETC) incorporated in a latex rubber matrix and works as a trap for NO, which is detectable by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). We explored the optimization of our sensors changing systematically two fabrication parameters: the latex rubber matrix temperature of polymerization and FeDETC concentration inside the matrix. The sensor was prepared in four different temperatures: 4, 10, 20 and 40°C. The FeDETC concentration was also varied from 0.975 to 14.8 mM. We observed a variation of the EPR signals from the sensors prepared at different conditions. We found a high stability of the EPR response from our sensor, 40 days at RT. The best sensor was made with a latex rubber matrix polymerized at 10°C and with a FeDETC concentration of 14.8 mM. In vivo tests show good biocompatibility of our sensor. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

The syntheses and properties of trans-[Ru(NH3) 4(L)(NO)](BF4)3 (L = isonicotinic acid (inaH) (I) or ina-Tat48-60 (II)) are described. Tat48-60, a cell penetrating peptide fragment of the Tat regulatory protein of the HIV virus, was linked to the ruthenium nitrosyl through inaH. I and II release NO after reduction forming trans-[Ru(NH3)4(L)(H2O)]3 +. The IC50 values against B16-F10 melanoma cells of I and II (21 μmol L- 1 and 23 μmol L- 1, respectively) are close to that of the commercially available cisplatin (33 μmol L- 1) and smaller than similar complexes. The cytotoxicity is assigned to the NO released from I and II. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The dba-free Heck-Matsuda reaction was investigated via direct ESI-MS(/MS) monitoring. Palladium species involved in the reduction of Pd(ii) during a Wacker type reaction and several dba-free arylpalladium transient complexes were detected and characterized. Based on these findings, a more comprehensible catalytic cycle for this pivotal reaction is suggested. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
