In order to assess the short- and long-term impacts of UV radiation (LTVR, 280-400 nm) on the red tide alga, Heterosigma akashiwo, we exposed the cells to three different solar radiation treatments (PAB: 280-700 rim, PA: 320-700 nm, R 400-700 nm) under both solar and artificial radiation. A significant decrease in the effective quantum yield () during high irradiance periods (i.e., local noon) was observed, but the cells partially recovered during the evening hours. Exposure to high irradiances for 15, 30, and 60 min under a solar simulator followed by the recovery (8 h) under dark, 9 and 100 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1) of PAR, highlighted the importance of the irradiance level during the recovery period. Regardless the radiation treatments, the highest recovery (both in rate and total Y) was found at a PAR irradiance of 9 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1), while the lowest was observed at 100 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1). In all experiments, PAR was responsible for most of the observed inhibition; nevertheless, the cells exposed only to PAR had the highest recovery in any condition, as compared to the other radiation treatments. In long-term experiments (10 days) using semi-continuous cultures, there was a significant increase of UV-absorbing compounds (UVabc) per cell from 1.2 to > 4 x 10(-6) mu g UVabc cell(-1) during the first 3-5 days of exposure to solar radiation. The highest concentration of UVabc was found in samples exposed in the PAB as compared to PA and P treatments. Growth rates (mu) mimic the behavior of UV-absorbing compounds, and during the first 5 days mu increased from < 0.2 to ca. 0.8, and stayed relatively constant at this value during the rest of the experiment. The inhibition of the Y decreased with increasing acclimation of cells. All our data indicates that H. akashiwo is a sensitive species, but was able acclimate relatively fast (3-5 days) synthesizing UV-absorbing compounds and thus reducing any impact either on photosystem 11 or on growth. Taenia solium metacestode, a larval pork tapeworm, is a causative agent of neurocysticercosis, one of the most common parasitic diseases in the human central nervous system. In this study, we identified a cDNA encoding for a cathepsin L-like cysteine protease from the T solium metacestode (TsCL-1) and characterized the biochemical properties of the recombinant enzyme. The cloned cDNA of 1216 bp encoded 339 amino acids with an approximate molecular weight of 37.6 kDa which containing a typical signal peptide sequence (17 amino acids), a pro-domain (106 amino acids), and a mature domain (216 amino acids). Sequence alignments of TsCL-1 showed low sequence similarity of 27.3-44.6 to cathepsin L-like cysteine proteases from other helminth parasites, but the similarity was increased to 35.9-55.0 when compared to mature domains. The bacterially expressed recombinant protein (rTsCL-1) did not show enzyme activity; however, the rTsCL-1 expressed in Pichia pastoris showed typical biochemical characteristics of cysteine proteases. It degraded human immunoglobulin G (IgG) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), but not collagen. Western blot analysis of the rTsCL-1 showed antigenicity against the sera from patients with cysticercosis, sparganosis or fascioliasis, but weak or no antigenicity against the sera from patients with paragonimiasis or clonorchiasis. A total of six stations in the Han River system were selected for establishing polyurethane foam units (PFUs) to collect protozoans, including phytomastigophorans, zoomastigophorans, amoebas and ciliates, in July 1993. In the bioassessment of microbial communities using the PFUs, the number of species decreased as pollution intensity increased. The diversity index values calculated at the main stations generally agreed with the pollution status of the stations. Anyang-Chon (Chon means stream) showed the lowest diversity value (1.89), and all stations, except Masok and Anyang-Chon, showed diversity index values ranging from 3.15 to 3.93. The highest heterotrophic index (HI) value was detected in Anyang-Chon followed by Masok-Chon. The number of species at the main stations reached a maximum on day 11 of being exposed to PFUs. The results of S-eq, G and T-90% all suggest that bioassessments using the PFU system were well matched with pollution status of the water. All microbial variables were significantly correlated with comprehensive chemical pollution indices, P-a and P-b, with correlation coefficients ranging from r=0.87 to r=0.96.

We propose a configuration for suppressing pumps in a broad- and flat-hand tunable nondegenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength converter. The signal and pumps are coupled into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber symmetrical Sagnac loop. After the FWM wavelength conversion in the loop, the idler is separated from the pumps without a filter. In our experiment, a flat wavelength conversion bandwidth of 36 rim, conversion efficiency of-11 dB., pump-to-signal suppression ratio of 48 dB, and idler-to-pump suppression ratio of 15 dB are achieved.

1.5 mu m. n-type modulation-doping InGaAsP/InGaAsP strained multiple quantum wells grown by low pressure metalorganic chemistry vapor decomposition technology is reported for the first time in the world. N-type modulation-doped lasers exhibit much lower threshold current densities than conventional lasers with undoped barrier layers. The lowest threshold current density we obtained was 1052.5 A/cm(2) for 1000 mu m long lasers with seven quantum wells. The estimated threshold current density for an infinite cavity length was 94.72A/cm(2)/well, reduced by 23.3% compared with undoped barrier lasers. The n-type modulation doping effects on the lasing characteristics in 1.5 mu m devices have been demonstrated.

This work demonstrates the condition optimization during liquid phase deposition (LPD) Of SiO2/GaAs films. LPD method is further applied to form Al2O3 films on semiconductors with poison-free materials. Proceeding at room temperature with inexpensive equipment, LPD of silica and alumina films is potentially serviceable in microelectronics and related spheres.

The in-plane optical anisotropy of three groups of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well structures has been studied by reflectance-difference spectroscopy (RDS). For GaAs/Al0.36Ga0.64As single QW structures, it is found that the optical anisotropy increases quickly as the well width is decreased. For an Al0.02Ga0.98As/AlAs multiple QW with a well width of 20nm, the optical anisotropy is observed not only for the transitions between ground states but also for those between the excited states with transition index n up to 5. An increase of the anisotropy with the transition energy, or equivalently the transition index n, is clearly observed. The detailed analysis shows that the observed anisotropy arises from the interface asymmetry of QWs, which is introduced by atomic segregation or anisotropic interface roughness formed during the growth of the structures. More, when the 1 ML InAs is inserted at one interface of GaAs/AlGaAs QW, the optical anisotropy of the QW can be increased by a factor of 8 due to the enhanced asymmetry of the QW. These results demonstrate clearly that the RDS is a sensitive and powerful tool for the characterization of semiconductor interfaces.

This paper reviews our work on controlled growth of self-assembled semiconductor nanostructures, and their application in light-emission devices. High-power, long-life quantum dots (QD) lasers emitting at similar to 1 mu m, red-emitting QD lasers, and long-wavelength QD lasers on GaAs substrates have successfully been achieved by optimizing the growth conditions of QDs.

The structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown on a combined InAlAs and GaAs strained buffer layer have been investigated by AFM and PL measurements. The dependence of the critical thickness for the transition from 2D to 3D on the thickness of GaAs layer is demonstrated directly by RHEED. The effects of the introduced-InAlAs layer on the density and the aspect ratio of QDs have been discussed.

Using a solution-based chemical method, we have prepared ZnS nanocrystals doped with high concentration of Mn2+. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed a zinc blende structure. The average size was about 3 nm. Photoluminescence spectrum showed room temperature emission in the visible spectrum, which consisted of the defect-related emission and the T-4(1)-(6)A(1) emission of Mn2+ ions. Compared with the undoped sample, the luminescence of the ZnS:Mn sample is enhanced by more than an order of magnitude, which indicated that the Mn2+ ions can efficiently boost the luminescence of ZnS nanocrystals.

InAs quantum wires (QWRs) have been fabricated on the InP(001), which has been evidenced by TEM and polarized photoluminescence measurements (PPL). The monlayer-splitting peaks (MSPs) in the PL spectrum of InAs QWRs can be clearly observed at low temperature measurements. Supposing a peak-shift of MSP identical to that of bulk material, we obtain the thermal activation energies of up to 5 MSPs. The smaller thermal activation energies for the MSPs of higher energy lead to the fast red-shift of PL peak as a whole.

In this paper, we investigated the Raman scattering and photoluminescence of Zn1-xMnxO nanowires synthesized by the vapor phase growth. The changes of E-2(High) and A(1(LO)) phonon frequency in Raman spectra indicate that the tensile stress increases while the free carrier concentration decreases with the increase of manganese. The Raman spectra exited by the different lasers exhibit the quantum confinement effect of Zn1-xMnxO nanowires. The photoluminescence spectra reveal that the near band emission is affected by the content of manganese obviously. The values Of I-UV/G decrease distinctly with the manganese increase also demonstrate that more stress introduced with the more substitution of Mn for Zn.

Organic light emitting diodes with an interface of organic acceptor 3-, 4-, 9-, 10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and donor copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) involved in hole injection are fabricated. As compared to the conventional device using a 5 nm CuPc hole injection layer, the device using an interface of 10 nm PTCDA and 5 rim CuPc layers shows much lower operating voltage with an increase of about 46% in the maximum power efficiency. The enhanced device performance is attributed to the efficient hole generation at the PTCDA/CuPc interface. This study provides a new way of designing hole injection.

We have investigated the mode characteristics for three-dimensional (3D) semiconductor microresonators by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. The results show that the quality-factors (Q-factors) of TM-like modes are much larger than those of TE-like modes as the vertical waveguidng formed by semiconductor materials.

Output coupling efficiencies are analyzed for triangular and square microlasers connected with an output waveguide by FDTD simulation. The results show that square resonator with an output waveguide connected to the midpoint of one side can have high output coupling efficiency and a good mode selection.
