Report of the second STREAM regional conference. Tagaytay City, Philippines 8-10 June 2003

The Second STREAM Regional Conference was held in Tagaytay City, Philippines, from 8-10 June 2003 with the participation of 23 people from Australia, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Yunnan (China). Following a regional overview of STREAM’s themes, country partners, donors and funding, and activities, participants visited four “stations” on the themes of livelihoods, institutions, policy development, and communications, working in groups representing National Coordinators, Communications Hub Managers, and Partners. They engaged in discussions with a “station leader” and each other to learn about and comment on objectives, activities, outcomes and outputs, and to consider issues that need addressing in STREAM. Assistance in poverty alleviation through improved aquatic resources management in Asia-Pacific: DLF/NACA-STREAM/FAO National Workshop on livelihoods approaches and analysis. Vientiane, Lao PDR, 8-12 Mar. 2004

This is the report of the “DLF/NACA-STREAM/FAO National Workshop on Livelihoods Approaches and Analysis” that was conducted in Vientiane, Lao PDR from 8-12 March 2004. The purpose of the workshop was to develop and document mechanisms for training in livelihoods approaches and analysis, and to build national capacity to conduct livelihoods analysis. The workshop in Vientiane was the first STREAM event in Lao PDR, with colleagues coming to participate from Vientiane and many provinces throughout the country. The workshop in Vientiane was the third in a series, the first of which was held in Iloilo City, Philippines, in November 2003 and the second in Ranchi, India, in February, 2004. Subsequent workshops will take place in other countries in the region, including Myanmar and Yunnan, China. (Pdf contains 59 pages).

Seguem-se observações preliminares sobre o contingenciamento de 2013, baseadas na 1ª Avaliação de receitas e despesas, anunciada somente em 22 de maio por conta da sanção tardia do orçamento; nos limites de pagamento e de movimentação e empenho das dotações do Executivo do Decreto 8.021/13, de 29 de maio, e da Portaria Ministério do Planejamento 207, de 31 de maio, assim como nas previsões constantes da proposta e da Lei aprovada.

Oceanographic results during VERTEX particle interceptor trap experiment 17 August to 8 September 1980

This report presents oceanographic data supporting the detailed chemical studies in the VERTEX Particle Interceptor Trap (PIT) experiment off the central California coast. Prior to the deployment of the PITs, an oceanographic survey of the intended study area was made on R/V CAYUSE from 17 to 21 August 1980. During this cruise, twenty CTD stations (Fig. 1) were occupied in a grid centered about the PIT site selected earlier based on archival oceanographic data. During the second leg of the VERTEX experiment from 25 August to 3 September, CTO profiles were taken as time permitted. In addition, a short survey near the PITs was made on 2 September. The intent of the pre-deployment cruise was to obtain data characterizing the vertical and horizontal variability of physical and chemical properties and to map the geostrophic flow field. Toward this end, vertical profiles of salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen were made using a Plessey 9040 CTOa profiler. Há 25 anos, era promulgada a Lei nº 8.069, de 1990, que instituiu o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA). A lei, inovadora em diversos aspectos, constitui importante marco jurídico, por criar mecanismos que possibilitam a efetivação dos direitos fundamentais de crianças e adolescentes conferidos pela Constituição Cidadã.

The Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Na(v)1.8 Is Expressed in Human Sperm

The role of Na+ fluxes through voltage-gated sodium channels in the regulation of sperm cell function remains poorly understood. Previously, we reported that several genes encoding voltage-gated Na+ channels were expressed in human testis and mature spermatozoa. In this study, we analyzed the presence and function of the TTX-resistant VGSC a subunit Na(v)1.8 in human capacitated sperm cells. Using an RT-PCR assay, we found that the mRNA of the gene SCN10A, that encode Na-v1.8, was abundantly and specifically expressed in human testis and ejaculated spermatozoa. The Na-v1.8 protein was detected in capacitated sperm cells using three different specific antibodies against this channel. Positive immunoreactivity was mainly located in the neck and the principal piece of the flagellum. The presence of Na-v1.8 in sperm cells was confirmed by Western blot. Functional studies demonstrated that the increases in progressive motility produced by veratridine, a voltage-gated sodium channel activator, were reduced in sperm cells preincubated with TTX (10 mu M), the Na-v1.8 antagonist A-803467, or a specific Na-v1.8 antibody. Veratridine elicited similar percentage increases in progressive motility in sperm cells maintained in Ca2+-containing or Ca2+-free solution and did not induce hyperactivation or the acrosome reaction. Veratridine caused a rise in sperm intracellular Na+, [Na+](i), and the sustained phase of the response was inhibited in the presence of A-803467. These results verify that the Na+ channel Na-v1.8 is present in human sperm cells and demonstrate that this channel participates in the regulation of sperm function.
