The aim of this study was to evaluate the pH and antimicrobial activity of micro or nanoparticulate zinc oxide (ZnO) pastes with or without calcium hydroxide (CH). The following medications were evaluated: microparticulate ZnO + polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400; nanoparticulate ZnO + PEG 400; PEG 400; CH + microparticulate ZnO + PEG 400 and CH + nanoparticulate ZnO + PEG 400. The pH was assessed between 12 hours and 28 days, using a digital pH meter. The antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC-9212), Candida albicans (ATCC-10231), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC-27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-6538) and Kocuria rhizophila (ATCC-9341) was determined in triplicate using agar diffusion test. The results were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn and ANOVA/Tukey tests with 5% significance. The highest pH values were found for CH+ZnO, with higher values for nanoparticulate ZnO after 12 hours and 21 days (p<0.05). CH+ZnO medication promoted higher growth inhibition against P. aeruginosa and lower against E. faecalis. Calcium hydroxide pastes have higher pH and antimicrobial activity when associated with either micro- or nanoparticulate zinc oxide.

Three nanostructured platinum-niobium supported on Vulcan XC-72R carbon black materials were prepared as catalysts for the ethanol electroxidation: (i) deposition of platinum and niobium on Vulcan XC-72R carbon black, (ii) platinum decorated on a mixture of commercial amorphous Nb2O5/carbon black, and (iii) the same than ii but using crystalline Nb2O5, by reduction of the precursors with sodium borohydride in ethanol. All the catalysts showed platinum crystal sizes in the range of 3-4 nm, with no or little modification of the lattice parameter. The analyses of the electronic structure from the XANES region of the XAS spectra displayed some interactions between platinum and niobium, despite the niobium was primarily in the form of pentoxide in all the catalysts. CO stripping exhibited a promising low onset potential and a large current density, especially in the case of the deposited catalyst. Ethanol electroxidation experiments revealed that the Pt-Nb(2)O(5)crystalline/C generated the largest current. However it was not effective to completely oxidize ethanol, leading to acetic acid as the main product. In this sense, the highest efficiency for the complete oxidation of ethanol was obtained for the deposited catalyst. These results were interpreted in terms of the physico-chemical characteristic displayed by the different catalysts. (C) 2012 The Electrochemical Society. The preparation of nanometer-sized structures of zinc oxide (ZnO) from zinc acetate and urea as raw materials was performed using conventional water bath heating and a microwave hydrothermal (MH) method in an aqueous solution. The oxide formation is controlled by decomposition of the added urea in the sealed autoclave. The influence of urea and the synthesis method on the final product formation are discussed. Broadband photoluminescence (PL) behavior in visible-range spectra was observed with a maximum peak centered in the green region which was attributed to different defects and the structural changes involved with ZnO crystals which were produced during the nucleation process.

Nanocomposites obtained from the polymerization of aniline in the presence of nanoparticles of magnetite (Fe3O4) have been investigated in previous studies. However, there is a lack of information available on the redox interaction of the nanoparticle/conductive polymer couple and the stability that such an oxide can give to the organic phase. In this work, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were incorporated into a PANi matrix by the in-situ oxidative polymerization method. A combination of X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy as well as the cyclic voltammetric and Raman spectroscopy techniques, was used to understand the redox effect that the partially oxidized nanoparticles produced on the polymer. It was found that magnetite greatly stabilised PANi, mainly by enhancing the Leucoemeraldine/Emeraldine redox couple and also by reducing the bipolaronic state. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The influence of silver nanoparticles (NPs) on the frequency upconversion luminescence in Er3+ doped TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3 glasses is reported. The effect of the NPs on the Er3+ luminescence was controlled by appropriate heat-treatment of the samples. Enhancement up to 700% was obtained for the upconverted emissions at 527, 550, and 660 nm, when a laser at 980 nm is used for excitation. Since the laser frequency is far from the NPs surface plasmon resonance frequency, the luminescence enhancement is attributed to the local field increase in the proximity of the NPs and not to energy transfer from the NPs to the emitters as is usually reported. This is the first time that the effect is investigated for tellurite-tungstate-bismutate glasses and the enhancement observed is the largest reported for a tellurium oxide based glass. In the present work we revisit the size data of CdS microcrystals previously collected in the glassy matrix of Germanium oxide. The CdS clusters analyzed using electron microscopy images have shown a wurtzite structure. The mean average radius, dispersion and volume evaluated from the histograms showed good agreement for t(1/3), t(2/3) and t laws, respectively. We observed that the amount of microcrystals remains constant throughout the heat treatment process, as well as that the radii distribution has a lower limit and increases with heat treatment. The distribution of radii follows a distribution similar to the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner distribution limited in the origin. Discussions led to the conclusion that the growth of CdS is a process that occurs after the fluctuating nucleation and coalescence phases. We then analyze the growth process, assuming that the evaporation is overcome by the precipitation rate, stabilizing all clusters with respect to dissolution back into the matrix. The problem was simplified neglecting anisotropy and the assuming a spherical shape for clusters and particles. The low interface tension was described in terms of an empirical potential barrier in the surface of the cluster. The growth dynamics developed considering that the number of clusters remains constant, and that the minimum size of these clusters grow with time, as the first order approximation showed a good agreement with the flaw. In this work we report studies of the photoluminescence emission in samples based on Si/SiOx films deposited by the Pulsed Electron Beam Ablation (PEBA) technique. The samples were prepared at room temperature using targets with different Si/SiO2 concentrations. The samples were characterized using X-ray Absorption Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) at the Si-K edge, Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The concentration of a-Si and nc-Si in the film was dependent on the silicon concentration in the target. It was also observed that the PL is strongly dependent on the structural amorphous/crystalline arrangement. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We describe the preparation of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) using the 3-n-propylpyridinium silsesquioxane chloride (SiPy+Cl-) as a nanoreactor and stabilizer. The formation of PtNPs was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy by measuring the decrease in the intensity of the band at 375 nm, which is attributed to the electronic absorption of PtCl62- ions. TEM images of Pt-SiPy+Cl- nanohybrid indicated an average size of 3-40 nm for PtNPs. The Pt-SiPy+Cl- was used as a polycation in the preparation of layer-by-layer films (LbL) on a glass substrate coated with fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) alternating with the polyanion poly(vinyl sulfonic acid) (PVS). The films were electrochemically tested in sulfuric acid to confirm the deposition of Pt-SiPy+Cl- onto the LbL films, observing the adsorption and desorption of hydrogen (E-pa = 0.1 V) and by the redox process of formation for PtO with E-pa = 1.3 V and E-pc = 0.65 V. FTIR and Raman spectra confirmed the presence of the PVS and Pt-SiPy+Cl- in the LbL films. A linear increase in the absorbance in the UV-Vis spectra of the Pt-SiPy+Cl- at 258 nm (pi -> pi* transition of the pyridine groups) with a number of Pt-SiPy+Cl-/PVS or PVS/SiPy+Cl- bilayers (R = 0.992) was observed. These LbL films were tested for the determination of dopamine (DA) in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) with a detection limit (DL) on the order of 2.6 x 10(-6) mol L-1 and a quantification limit (QL) of 8.6 x 10(-6) mol L-1. The films exhibited a good repeatability and reproducibility, providing a potential difference of 550 mV for the oxidation of DA with AA interferent.

Ceria (CeO2) plays a vital role in emerging technologies for environmental and energy-related applications. The catalytic efficiency of ceria nanoparticles depends on its morphology. In this study, CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method under different synthesis temperatures. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. The X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering results indicated that all the synthesized samples had a pure cubic CeO2 structure. Rietveld analysis and Raman scattering also revealed the presence of structural defects due to an associated reduction in the valence of the Ce4+ ions to Ce3+ ions caused by an increasing molar fraction of oxygen vacancies. The morphology of the samples was controlled by varying the synthesis temperature. The TEM images show that samples synthesized at 80 degrees C consisted of spherical particles of about 5 nm, while those synthesized at 120 degrees C presented a mix of spherical and rod-like nanoparticles and the sample synthesized at 160 degrees C consisted of nanorods with 10 nm average diameter and 70 nm length. The microwave-assisted method proved to be highly efficient for the synthesis of CeO2 nanoparticles with different morphologies.

The work presented in this doctoral thesis is a facile procedure, thermal decomposition, forrnthe synthesis of different types of monodisperse heterodimer M@iron oxide (M= Cu, Co, Nirnand Pt) and single ferrites, MFe2O4 (M= Cu and Co), nanoparticles. In the following chapter, rnwe study the synthesis of these monodiperse nanoparticles with the similar iron precursorrn(iron pentacarbonyl) and different transition metal precursors such as metalrnacetate/acetylacetonate/formate precursors in the presence of various surfactants and solvents.rnAccording to their decomposition temperatures and reducing condition, a specific and suitablernroute was designed for the formation of Metal@Metal oxide or MFe2O4 nanoparticlesrn(Metal/M=transition metal).rnOne of the key purposes in the formation of nanocrystals is the development of syntheticrnpathways for designing and controlling the composition, shape and size of predictedrnnanostructures. The ability to arrange different nanosized domains of metallic and magneticrnmaterials into a single heterodimer nanostructure offers an interesting direction to engineerrnthem with multiple functionalities or enhanced properties of one domain. The presence andrnrole of surfactants and solvents in these reactions result in a variety of nanocrystal shapes. Therncrystalline phase, the growth rate and the orientation of growth parameters along certainrndirections of these structures can be chemically modulated by using suitable surfactants. In allrnnovel reported heterodimer nanostructures in this thesis, initially metals were preformed andrnthen by the injection of iron precursor in appropriate temperature, iron oxide nanoparticlesrnwere started to nucleate on the top or over the surfaces of metal nanoparticles. Ternary phasesrnof spherical CuxFe3-xO4 and CoFe2O4 ferrites nanoparticles were designed to synthesis just byrnlittle difference in diffusion step with the formation of mentioned phase separated heterodimerrnnanoparticles. In order to use these magnetic nanoparticles in biomedical and catalysisrnapplications, they should be transferred into the water phase solution, therefore they werernfunctionalized by a multifunctional polymeric ligand. These functionalized nanoparticles werernstable against aggregation and precipitation in aqueous media for a long time. Magneticrnresonance imaging and catalytic reactivities are two promising applications which have beenrnutilized for these magnetic nanoparticles in this thesis.rnThis synthetic method explained in the following chapters can be extended to the synthesis ofrnother heterostructured nanomaterials such as Ni@MnO or M@M@iron oxide (M=transitionrnmetal) or to use these multidomain particles as building blocks for higher order structures.

This work deals with the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) using metal supported catalysts. Catalysts were prepared from the immobilisation of preformed monometallic (Au, Pd) and bimetallic (AuCu, AuPd) nanoparticles on commercial oxides (TiO2, CeO2). Au-TiO2 catalyst was found to be very active for HMF oxidation; however, this system deactivated very fast. For this reason, we prepared bimetallic gold-copper nanoparticles and an increase in the catalytic activity was observed together with an increase in catalyst stability. In order to optimise the interaction of the metal active phase with the support, Au and AuCu nanoparticles were supported onto CeO2. Au-CeO2 catalyst was found to be more active than the bimetallic one, leading to the conclusion that in this case the most important feature is the interaction between gold and the support. Catalyst pre-treatments (calcination and washing) were carried out to maximise the contact between the metal and the oxide and an increase in the FDCA production could be observed. The presence of ceria defective sites was crucial for FDCA formation. Mesoporous cerium oxide was synthesised with the hard template method and was used as support for Au nanoparticles to promote the catalytic activity. In order to study the role of active phase in HMF oxidation, PdAu nanoparticles were supported onto TiO2. Au and Pd monometallic catalysts were very active in the formation of HMFCA (5-hydroxymethyl-2-furan carboxylic acid), but Pd was not able to convert it, leading to a low FDCA yield. The calcination of PdAu catalysts led to Pd segregation on the particles surface, which changed the reaction pathway and included an important contribution of the Cannizzaro reaction. PVP protected PdAu nanoparticles, synthesised with different morphologies (core-shell and alloyed structure), confirmed the presence of a different reaction mechanism when the metal surface composition changes.
