Larval development of indigenous South American freshwater fish species, with particular reference to pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus): A review

In recent years, a number of South American freshwater fish have gained increasing attention for their potential in aquaculture, not only because of their excellent performance in farming systems but also to meet the high consumer demand for these species due to declining fishery resources. Many South American freshwater species are migratory and produce altricial larvae, with a small amount of yolk reserves. Unlike precocial freshwater species and altricial coldwater marine fish, these freshwater fish investigated have rapid yolk depletion and metamorphosis. Specific studies on the initial development of South American fish are scarce and fragmented. One of the most widely studied species is the pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), farmed in warm continental waters. In the present review we compile new and published data on the initial development of pacu, including morphogenesis of the skeletal, muscle, digestive and sensory systems; compare it to other Neotropical species; and discuss the importance of this information to develop larviculture protocols. When pacu larvae exhaust yolk reserves, they initiate a new form of interaction with the environment, becoming exclusively exotrophic. This type of interaction is made possible by the rapid development of sensory, skeletal, locomotor and digestive structures. In addition to understanding fish ontogeny, studies on larval development are necessary to improve farming systems and larviculture techniques aimed at producing high-quality juveniles in aquaculture. Automatic visual dictionary generation through optimum-path forest clusteringautomatic visual dictionary generation through optimum-path forest clustering

Image categorization by means of bag of visual words has received increasing attention by the image processing and vision communities in the last years. In these approaches, each image is represented by invariant points of interest which are mapped to a Hilbert Space representing a visual dictionary which aims at comprising the most discriminative features in a set of images. Notwithstanding, the main problem of such approaches is to find a compact and representative dictionary. Finding such representative dictionary automatically with no user intervention is an even more difficult task. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically find such dictionary by employing a recent developed graph-based clustering algorithm called Optimum-Path Forest, which does not make any assumption about the visual dictionary's size and is more efficient and effective than the state-of-the-art techniques used for dictionary generation.

Reflexões sobre a prática pedagógica nas atividades de ensino: monitoria, no ensino médio em escola particular e estadual em Rio Claro

The difficulties related to physics teaching are related to methodology, that hinder learning, because some physical concepts beyond the common sense of most students. Just as poor training of some physics instructors in teaching is pedagogical difficulties. And also factors of infrastructure, heterogeneity in students' previous training etc.. It is proposed aim of this work to use reflection of teaching practice as a methodology. Practiced in a private school, mostly state and, in high school in Rio Claro. The method consists of preparing a daily pedagogical practice in parallel to the development of teaching, for analysis and identification of factors that result in improving the teaching of physics and physics teacher qualification

Nursery Rhymes e a correspondência formal e funcional na tradução de poesia infantil

Este trabalho concentra-se na tradução de poemas infantis em língua inglesa, examinando, em particular, as denominadas nursery rhymes, componentes do cancioneiro popular na cultura do Reino Unido. Serão considerados aspectos formais e históricos dessa categoria poética e apresentadas sugestões de tradução para alguns poemas, com base nos conceitos de correspondência formal e correspondência funcional, elaborados por Paulo Henriques Britto, como aplicados ao processo tradutório (ademais de seu emprego na crítica de tradução poé- tica). Foram selecionados para tradução e exemplificação das discussões três poemas de temáticas diversas, extraídos das coletâneas organizadas por Peter e Iona Opie, The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes (1952/1997) e A Family Book of Nursery Rhymes (1964).

A imaginação como metafísica:uma leitura do poema o percurso de um particular de Wllace Stevens

Wallace Stevens produziu uma poesia considerada difícil, distante da dicção fragmentária do primeiro Eliot tanto quanto da imagística de William Carlos Williams, apesar de compartilhar com o último o interesse pelas coisas como elas são. Sua dicção poética se caracterizou muito mais pelo interesse quase filosófico na relação entre imaginação e realidade, interesse que o levou a considerar a primeira, a “rainha das faculdades” segundo Baudelaire, como uma forma de metafísica. Expurgando dela os resquícios românticos subjetivizantes e dotando-a de capacidade de abstração e generalização, Stevens lhe dá envergadura de ontologia, na medida em que ela possibilita ao poeta tanto a apreensão das particularidades do mundo real quanto o desenvolvimento do pensamento lógico em direção a uma fenomenologia da percepção. Esta concepção e prática poética se acentuou ao longo da trajetória poética de Stevens e embora a crítica note algum excesso retórico nos poemas de maturidade, a sua capacidade inicial de síntese — notável em Harmonium, seu livro de estréia (1923) — é retomada nos poemas da fase final de sua produção, como mostaremos na análise do poema “O percurso de um particular”, publicado após a morte do poeta, em 1955.

A dialética singular-particular-universal: implicações do método materialista dialético para a psicologia

Considering that Cultural-Historical theory has been gaining importance within Brazilian Psychology in the last decades, this essay aims at contributing to understanding its ontological and epistemological foundations, introducing the concepts of singularity, particularity and universality of the dialectics that exists between them. The analysis looks to explore the implications to Psychology, both as a science and as a professional practice, of the lukacsian indication about the need to apprehend the connections between singularity, particularity and universality as a condition for understanding the essence of phenomena. In that sense, this analysis brings light to the individual/society dynamics unity affirmed by historical-dialectical materialism, which contributes to overcoming of the dichotomies usually established between the poles of this relationship.

Review of issues concerning the use of reproductive inhibitors, with particular emphasis on resolving human-wildlife conflicts in North America

This manuscript provides an overview of past wildlife contraception efforts and discusses the current state of research. Two fertility control agents, an avian reproductive inhibitor containing the active ingredient nicarbazin and an immunocontraceptive vaccine, have received regulatory approval with the Environmental Protection Agency and are commercially available in the USA. OvoControl G Contraceptive Bait for Canada Geese and Ovo Control for pigeons are delivered as oral baits. An injectable immunocontraceptive vaccine (GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine) was registered with the Environmental Protection Agency for use in female white-tailed deer in September 2009. An injectable product (GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine) is registered for use in female white-tailed deer. Both products are labeled for use in urban/suburban areas where these species are overabundant. Several other compounds are currently being tested for use in wildlife in the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand that could have promise in the future. The development and use of reproductive inhibitors for resolving human–wildlife conflicts will depend on a number of factors, including meeting the requirements of regulatory agencies for use in the environment and on the biological and economical feasibility of their use. Use will also be dependent on health and safety issues and on public acceptance of the techniques.

Effective carrying capacity and analytical solution of a particular case of the Richards-like two-species population dynamics model

We consider a generalized two-species population dynamic model and analytically solve it for the amensalism and commensalism ecological interactions. These two-species models can be simplified to a one-species model with a time dependent extrinsic growth factor. With a one-species model with an effective carrying capacity one is able to retrieve the steady state solutions of the previous one-species model. The equivalence obtained between the effective carrying capacity and the extrinsic growth factor is complete only for a particular case, the Gompertz model. Here we unveil important aspects of sigmoid growth curves, which are relevant to growth processes and population dynamics. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This is a research paper in which we discuss “active learning” in the light of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), a powerful framework to analyze human activity, including teaching and learning process and the relations between education and wider human dimensions as politics, development, emancipation etc. This framework has its origin in Vygotsky's works in the psychology, supported by a Marxist perspective, but nowadays is a interdisciplinary field encompassing History, Anthropology, Psychology, Education for example.
