Internationalisation of HE and emergence of English as a global academic lingua franca used by people who share neither a common native tongue nor cultural and educational background have not only offered more opportunities but also raised challenges. According to recent European surveys, the percentage of pupils attaining the level of independent user in English varies from 14% to 82%, which evidences the potential and the complexity for English as a medium of instruction at tertiary level. This study aims to present the model of foreign language instruction at Vytautas Magnus University where one third of 30 languages are taught through English. It investigates the attitudes and practices of teachers in delivering their English-medium language courses by discussing the questions whether teaching other languages through English is psychologically, culturally and educationally preferable for teachers and students, whether it can limit the content taught and require a special methodology, how the teaching process changes with multiple languages used in the classroom and what level of English is necessary for teachers and students to ensure high quality of English-medium language teaching. The study is based on qualitative methodology with 12 language teachers participating as respondents. The results reveal areas in need of improvement.

Nursing discharge planning for elderly medical inpatients is an essential element of care to ensure optimal transition to home and to reduce post-discharge adverse events. The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to investigate the association between nursing discharge planning components in older medical inpatients, patients' readiness for hospital discharge and unplanned health care utilization during the following 30 days. Results indicated that no patients benefited from comprehensive discharge planning but most benefited from less than half of the discharge planning components. The most frequent intervention recorded was coordination, and the least common was patients' participation in decisions regarding discharge. Patients who received more nursing discharge components felt significantly less ready to go home and had significantly more readmissions during the 30-day follow-up period. This study highlights large gaps in the nursing discharge planning process in older medical inpatients and identifies specific areas where improvements are most needed.

4e de couv.: Comment est né le concept moderne, scientifique, de "race" ? Pourquoi est-il devenu si rapidement hiérarchique, distinguant les "races inférieures" des "races supérieures" ? Et comment ce concept a-t-il pu revêtir une telle importance, aussi bien au sein de la communauté scientifique qu'auprès du grand public, au cours du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle, jusqu'à être utilisé pour expliquer l'histoire et le devenir de l'humanité ? Autant d'interrogations, à l'origine de ce livre. L'invention de la race analyse la genèse des conceptions scientifiques de la "race", et montre que les nouvelles techniques de mesure et de représentation des corps racialisés opèrent une révolution visuelle majeure, inscrivant la différence humaine dans la biologie. Cet ouvrage avance qu'à partir d'une origine européenne, l'idée de race s'est étendue - par les connexions transnationales de réseaux scientifiques et marchands -, à tout l'Occident, mais aussi au Japon, à la Corée et à une partie de la Chine. Partout, elle suscite représentations et politique raciales discriminatoires. L'ouvrage montre aussi que les théories sur les hiérarchies raciales ont influencé les spectacles ethniques (dont les zoos humains), les expositions internationales et coloniales, la photographie ou les collections ethnographiques. Les expositions internationales et coloniales et l'internationalisation des spectacles ethniques ont largement véhiculé ces hiérarchies, contribuant forger une vision du monde fondée sur l'inégalité des races.

OBJECTIVE: Client change talk has been proposed as a mechanism of change in motivational interviewing (MI) by mediating the link between therapist MI-consistent behaviors (MICO) and client behavioral outcomes. We tested under what circumstances this mechanism was supported in the context of a clinical trial of brief MI for heavy drinking among nontreatment seeking young men. METHOD: We conducted psycholinguistic coding of 174 sessions using the MI Skill Code 2.1 and derived the frequency of MICO and the strength of change talk (CTS) averaged over the session. CTS was examined as a mediator of the relationship between MICO and a drinking composite score measured at 3-month follow-up, controlling for the composite measure at baseline. Finally, we tested therapist gender and MI experience as well as client readiness to change and alcohol problem severity as moderators of this mediation model. RESULTS: CTS significantly predicted outcome (higher strength related to less drinking), but MICO did not predict CTS. However, CTS mediated the relationship between MICO and drinking outcomes when therapists had more experience in MI and when clients had more severe alcohol problems (i.e., significant conditional indirect effects). CONCLUSIONS: The mechanism hypothesized by MI theory was operative in our brief MI with heavy drinking young men, but only under particular conditions. Our results suggest that attention should be paid to therapist selection, training, and/or supervision until they reach a certain level of competence, and that MI might not be appropriate for nontreatment seeking clients drinking at a lower level of risk. We report an experiment where participants observed an attack on their virtual body as experienced in an immersive virtual reality (IVR) system. Participants sat by a table with their right hand resting upon it. In IVR, they saw a virtual table that was registered with the real one, and they had a virtual body that substituted their real body seen from a first person perspective. The virtual right hand was collocated with their real right hand. Event-related brain potentials were recorded in two conditions, one where the participant"s virtual hand was attacked with a knife and a control condition where the knife only struck the virtual table. Significantly greater P450 potentials were obtained in the attack condition confirming our expectations that participants had a strong illusion of the virtual hand being their own, which was also strongly supported by questionnaire responses. Higher levels of subjective virtual hand ownership correlated with larger P450 amplitudes. Mu-rhythm event-related desynchronization in the motor cortex and readiness potential (C3-C4) negativity were clearly observed when the virtual hand was threatened as would be expected, if the real hand was threatened and the participant tried to avoid harm. Our results support the idea that event-related potentials may provide a promising non-subjective measure of virtual embodiment. They also support previous experiments on pain observation and are placed into context of similar experiments and studies of body perception and body ownership within cognitive neuroscience.

Purchasing and supply management (PSM) has become increasingly important for companies to survive in current highly competitive market. Increased outsourcing has extended the role of PSM, making external resource management and supplier relationships critical success factors in business. However, the recent research has mainly concentrated on large enterprises. Therefore the PSM issues related to medium-sized enterprises represent a significant research area. The thesis aims to explore the status and role of PSM in Finnish medium-sized firms, understand how strategic companies consider PSM to be, clarify what are the competence requirements for PSM professionals, and increase the understanding of PSM capabilities needed from the points view of individual competence and organisational capabilities. The study uses data that was collected in 2007 from purchasing executives at the director/CEO level representing a sample of 94 Finnish firms. 54 % of the respondent enterprises had a supply strategy. The total supply cost was on average 60 % of firms' turnover. Centralisation of PSM and outsourcing of logistics will increase in Finnish medium-sized enterprises. The findings point out that Finnish medium-sized enterprises had strategical features of PSM. However, Finnish firms have not concentrated on making strategies that relate to PSM. The elements that explain the existence of a supply strategy could be found in this study. It can be concluded from this study that there is an advantageous base for the development of strategic PSM, because nearly all the enterprises were of the opinion that PSM capabilities have an effect on business success. When reviewing the organisational capabilities, the five most important development elements were supplier relationships, both operational and strategic processes, time management, and personnel's competence. Training in internationalisation, strategic management, and communication could help to improve competences of PSM personnel.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää kuinka tilintarkastajista tilintarkastuslautakunnalle tehdyt kantelut ovat muuttuneet vuosien 1990–2000 ja 2001–2006 aikana. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella ovatko kansainvälistymisen aiheuttamat muutokset tilintarkastusta säätelevissä laeissa johtaneet kanteluiden määrälliseen tai laadulliseen muutokseen. Teoreettinen osa tarkastelee tilintarkastusta lainsäädännöllisesti sekä TILA:n tehtäviä tilintarkastusta valvovana elimenä. Empiirinen osa tutkii TILA:lle tehtyjen kanteluiden ratkaisuselosteita vuosien 1990–2000 ja 2001–2006 välillä. Kanteluita tutkitaan sekä määrällisesti että laadullisesti. Tulokset osoittavat että kanteluiden määrässä on tapahtunut muutos; vuosina 2001–2006 kanteluiden määrä on selvästi laskenut. Kanteluiden laadussa, kun sillä käsitetään kanteluiden syy sekä epäilyksen alainen toiminta, ei ole tapahtunut muutosta mutta sanktioiden jakaantumisessa eri toiminnan mukaan puolestaan on tapahtunut muutosta.

Using event-related brain potentials, the time course of error detection and correction was studied in healthy human subjects. A feedforward model of error correction was used to predict the timing properties of the error and corrective movements. Analysis of the multichannel recordings focused on (1) the error-related negativity (ERN) seen immediately after errors in response- and stimulus-locked averages and (2) on the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) reflecting motor preparation. Comparison of the onset and time course of the ERN and LRP components showed that the signs of corrective activity preceded the ERN. Thus, error correction was implemented before or at least in parallel with the appearance of the ERN component. Also, the amplitude of the ERN component was increased for errors, followed by fast corrective movements. The results are compatible with recent views considering the ERN component as the output of an evaluative system engaged in monitoring motor conflict.

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli kartoittaa suomalaisten pk-yritysten kansainvälisen liiketoimintaosaamisen kehittämistarpeita ja esittää kuinka kansainvälistymispalveluita voitaisiin kehittää vastaamaan tarpeisiin paremmin. Tutkielma jakautuu teoreettiseen ja empiiriseen osaan. Empiirisessä osassa hyödynnettiin valmista, survey-menetelmällä toteutettua tutkimusmateriaalia, jonka 122 pk-yritystä tutkittiin kvantitatiivisesti. Tutkimuksen mukaan suomalaisten pk-yritysten keskeisin kansainvälisen liiketoimintaosaamisen kehittämistarve on myynti- ja markkinointi-osaaminen. Pk-yritykset tarvitsevat ulkopuolista apua erityisesti ulkomaisten asiakkaiden ja yhteistyökumppaneiden löytämisessä. Tutkimuksen mukaan kansainvälistymispalveluiden käyttämättä jättämiseen ei vaikuta se, ettei palveluista ole saatu tarpeeksi tietoa, vaan se, ettei palveluita koeta hyödyllisiksi ja tarpeisiin vastaaviksi. Pk-yritysten kansainvälisen osaamisen kehittämiseen tarjottavat palvelut eivät täysin vastaa yritysten tarpeita. Kansainvälistymispalveluita tulisi kehittää erityisesti tarjoamalla yrityksille käytännön apua koulutuksen sijasta, tunnistamalla osaamistarpeet tehokkaammin, parantamalla alueellista tiedotusta ja lisäämällä palveluntarjoajien keskeistä yhteistyötä.

Academic Career Paths. The early career phases of generalists in the fields of humanities, social science and education in the 1980’s and 1990’s This doctoral thesis analyses how generalist graduates of master’s degree have attached to the labour market in two different time periods, and how their career paths in the first eight years following graduation have shaped up. The thesis also analyses the channels of employment through which the generalists have got employed in their early career path. By generalists I am referring to graduates of studies in academic fields which have not qualified the person in a specific profession but rather offered a more general readiness for working life. I address two groups of generalist master’s degree graduates of The University of Turku; one including graduates of the year 1985 and the other consisting of graduates of 1995. All subjects have graduated in the field of humanities, social studies or education. 71 respondents from the group of 1985 and 80 respondents from the group of 1995 answered a survey, which provided the data for the thesis. I interpret the data through the theoretical approaches of changing working life, model of normal employment, transitional labour markets, linear life path, overlapping life courses, hidden labour market and social capital. The conclusion of the thesis is that societal era is connected with employment and career paths of academic generalists. Between the two groups there were differences especially in attachment to labor market, in forms of employment (permanent full-time job vs. temporary job) and in employment channels. Compared to the situation the 1985 group had been in after their graduation, the 1995 group - after getting their degree - became more often unemployed and/or employed in duties below their level of education. Their mobility was also greater and their contracts were often temporary, whereas the graduates of 1985 had been employed in more permanent positions. I demonstrate that the career paths of generalists can be categorized in five career types: steady state, transitory, linear, unsteady and diverging career. Graduates of 1985 have been treading on more stable paths than the latter group. The channels of employment they used were roughly equally divided between formal (e.g. newspaper advertisement and employment office) and informal (e.g. personal contacts and unprompted search for work) channels, whereas amongst the 1995 group employment happened through more varied channels and mostly through informal channels. Regardless of their year of graduation the generalists’ careers had begun to evolve already while they were still in the university and had started working at the same time. The thesis displays how the model of normal employment has weakened and career paths have become unsteady as a consequence of temporary positions. What is also evident in employment when turning from the 1980’s towards the succeeding decade is the rise of significance of the hidden labour market and social capital.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli luoda ymmärrystä esimiestyöstä sekä kehityskeskustelusta esimiestyön apuvälineenä. Tutkimusongelman ratkaisemiseksi haluttiin selvittää tuloksellisen esimiestyön toteutuminen sekä kehityskeskustelujen toteuttamisen ja hyödyntämisen taso. Tutkimus- menetelmä oli kvalitatiivinen, ja sen empiirinen aineisto koostui kohdeyritykseksi valitun myyntiorganisaation seitsemän myyntijohtajan teemahaastattelusta. Tutkimustulosten mukaan esimiehet ymmärtävät työntekijän merkityksen yrityksen menestymisessä. Esimiehet tiedostavat myös oman roolinsa työntekijän tuloksellisuuden edistämisessä. Esimiesten henkinen valmius ja tahtotila ovat olemassa, mutta he tarvitsevat koulutusta sekä organisaation tukea voidakseen täysipainoisesti toteuttaa tuloksellista esimiestyötä. Tulokset osoittavat lisäksi, että esimiehet ymmärtävät kehityskeskustelun tärkeyden ja sen mahdollisuudet, mutta kehityskeskustelujen toteuttaminen ja hyödyntäminen jää minimitasolle. Tärkeäksi kehittämiskohteeksi nousi kehityskeskustelukäytännön suunnitteleminen yrityksen tarpeisiin sopivaksi sekä kehityskeskustelun merkityksen ja tavoitteitten määritteleminen. Alaistaidot tulevat tutkimustuloksissa esiin asiana, johon tulisi aikaisempaa enemmän kiinnittää huomiota esimiestyön tuloksellisuutta tukevana, työntekijän omia tuloksia vahvistavana sekä koko yrityksen menestystä lisäävänä tekijänä.

Finnish health centres have suffered from a shortage of physicians in recent years. This is why more physicians are being educated, the tutelage of the young physicians has been improved and many tasks which were previously reserved for physicians have been transferred to nurses and other personnel of the health centres. Only a little research has been done about the effects of the shortage of physicians and education to the work atmosphere in the health centres The objectives of the study was to describe the situation of the physicians in the counties Satakunta and South-Western Finland at the time when the University of Turku started to decentralise its education to Satakunta and describe the health centres attitudes towards training and research co-operation with the University of Turku; to gain information about the training programmes for physicians in specific training in general medical practice (STPG); study how the shortage of physicians affects the job atmosphere, the job satisfaction and the operation of the health centres; study health centre employees opinions about their professional skills, their needs and interets in continuing education; study medical and nurse students professional indentity and their readiness to multiprofessional teamwork. The material of the study was gathered during 2003-2006 with three mail questionnaires and a questionnaire given to medical and nurse students who practised in the training health centre in Pori. The first questionnaire was sent to the chief physicians of the health centres in counties Satakunta and South-Western Finland to clarify the number of unfilled positions of physicians and the reasons for physician shortage as well as the readiness for practical training of medical students and research at the health centres. The second questionnaire was posted to doctors in specific training in general medical practice and their trainers at the health centres and it gained information about training programmes of young physicians at health centres. The third questionnaire was sent to personnel at health centres in Satakunta and South-Western Finland and included questions about job satisfaction and education. The survey for medical and nurse students gained information about their professional indentity and their readiness to multiprofessional teamwork. In spring 2003 the shortage of physicians was more severe in Satakunta than in South-Western Finland. Attitudes towards training of medical students and research co-operation with the universities were generally positive. The guidance of STGP doctors in health centres improved during 2003-2005. A shortage of physicians had only a slightly negative impact on employee job satisfaction. The shortage of physicians had also positive impact on the operation of the health centres because it led to reorganization of the operations. The personnel at Finnish health centres were willing to take more challenging tasks and also to acquire appropriate further education or training. The medical and nurse students had strong professional identity and they understood the significance of teamwork for the health care service system.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kehittää Larox Oyj:n alihankintaprojektien kustannuslaskentaa. Yrityksessä oli havaittu, että pitkäaikaishankkeiden kustan-nusten kertymistä pitää pystyä ennustamaan tarkemmin. Konstruktiivisen tutkimusotteen mukaisesti tutkimuksessa luotiin esiymmärrys kohdeyrityksen nykytilanteesta, perehdyttiin vaikuttavaan lainsäädäntöön ja aikaisempaan tutkimustietoon. Kuvaus nykytilanteesta luotiin kohdeyrityksen ja alihankkijan edustajien haastatteluiden avulla, tutustumalla yrityksen toimintaohjeisiin ja keräämällä tietoa projektien kustannusten kertymisestä. Kerätyn tiedon perusteella luotiin konstruktiot eli ratkaisuehdotukset toiminnan kehittämiseksi. Tutkimuksessa kehitettiin raportointimalli alihankintaprojektien edistymisen raportointiin. Mallin tavoitteena on yhtenäistää alihankkijoiden raportointikäy-täntöjä ja tuottaa sellaista tietoa, jota Larox tarvitsee tuottojen tunnistamista varten. Toinen konkreettinen ratkaisu on alihankintaprojektien kustannuskertymän ennustetyökalu, jonka avulla voidaan ennakoida hankkeen valmiusasteen kehitystä projektin aikana. Malli on rakennettu yhden konetyypin projektien ennustamiseen, mutta siitä voidaan helposti muokata ennustemallit muidenkin projektityyppien tarpeisiin. Tarkempien ennusteiden avulla voidaan kehittää johdon raportointia ja parantaa kassavirtojen ennustettavuutta.

Tämän kandidaatintyön tavoitteena on selvittää ja analysoida venäläisten yritysten kansainvälistymistä investointien näkökulmasta. Aihetta tutkittiin Venäjältä ulospäin suuntautuneiden investointien valossa. Kansainvälistymistä analysoitiin konkreettisten yritysesimerkkien kautta. Työssä käytettiin lähteinä aikaisempia aiheesta tehtyjä tutkimuksia sekä esimerkkeinä olevien yritysten internetsivuja. Venäläisten yritysten kansainvälistyminen alkoi toden teolla vasta Neuvostoliiton hajoamisen jälkeen. Käytännössä yritysten kansainvälistyminen on lähtenyt kasvuun vasta 2000-luvulla. Viime vuosien aikana Venäjä on ollut yksi suurimmista ulospäin investoijista nousevien markkinatalouksien joukossa. Suurimmat Venäjältä ulospäin investoijat toimivat öljy- ja kaasuteollisuudessa sekä metalli- ja kaivosteollisuudessa. Kyseiset teollisuudenalat ovat riippuvaisia raaka-aineiden maailmanmarkkinahinnoista. Vuoden 2008 lopulla alkanut talouskriisi on alentanut raaka-aineiden hintoja ja näin vaikuttanut yritysten toimintaan. Yritykset ovat joutuneet talousvaikeuksiin, joka on vaikuttanut myös niiden investointeihin ulkomaille. Tällä hetkellä Venäjä on riippuvainen luonnonvaroihin perustuvista teollisuudenaloista, mutta tulevaisuudessa uusilla yrityksillä on mahdollisuuksia nousta kansainvälisien yritysten joukkoon. Raaka-aineiden hintojen kääntyessä jälleen nousuun myös luonnonvaroihin perustuvat yritykset tulevat nousemaan ahdingosta ja jatkamaan kansainvälistymistä.
