The datasets present measurements of cDOM absorption in lakes, rivers and streams of Yamal and Gydan Peninsula area during the summer periods from 2012-2014 and 2016. In summer seasons of 2012 - 2013 water samples was collected during "Yamal-Arctic" Expedition. All of the research areas were located near the coastline of Yamal, Yavay, and Gydan Peninsula and Bely Island. In 2012 water samples from rivers, lakes and streams were taken near New Port, Cape Kamenny and Tambey settlements and in basins (water catchments) of the Sabetta, Seyakha, Yuribey (Baydaratskaya Bay, Gydan Peninsula) and Mongocheyakha rivers. In 2013 water samples from rivers, lakes and streams were taken in the Yavai Peninsula, Yayne Vong bay and in the basins (water catchments) of the Sabetta, Mongocheyakha and Yuribey (Gydan Peninsula) rivers. In 2014 lakes were sampled in the Erkuta River basin, south of Yamal Peninsula. In 2016 lakes and rivers were sampled it the Erkuta River basin and Polar Ural area. cDOM is operationally defined by the chosen filter pore size. Samples have been consistently filtrated through 0.7 µm pore size glas fibre filters. cDOM filtrates have been stored in darkness and have been measured after the expedition using the dual-beam Specord200 laboratory spectrometer (Jena Analytik) at the Otto Schmidt Laboratory OSL, Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. The OSL cDOM protocol (Heim and Roessler, 2016) prescribes 3 Absorbance (A) measurements per sample from UV to 750 nm against ultra-pure water. The absorption coefficient, a, is calculated by a = 2.303A/L, where L is the pathlength of the cuvette [m], and the factor 2.303 converts log10 to loge. The output of the calculation is a continuous spectrum of a. The cDOM a spectra are used to determine the exponential slope value for specific wavelength ranges, S by fitting the data between min and max wavelength to an exponential function. We provide cDOM absorption coefficients for the wavelengths 254, 260, 350, 375, 400, 412, 440, 443 nm [1/m] and Slope values for three different UV, VIS, wavelength ranges: 275 to 295 nm, 350 to 400 nm, 300 to 500 nm [1/m]. All data were carried out by scientists from Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute and Saint Petersburg State University of Russia during "Yamal-Arctic" expeditions in 2012-2013, RFBR project No 14-04-10065 in 2014, No 14-05-00787 in 2016.

Nearly continuous cores of Quaternary fine-grained sediments with distinct dark-light colored cycles were recovered from Sites 794, 795, and 797 in the basinal parts of the Japan Sea during Leg 127. A comparison of gray value (darkness) profiles supplemented by visual inspection of core photographs between sites indicated that most of the dark and light layers were correlatable between sites, and that two of the dark layers lie close to adjacent marker ash layers. These observations indicate that deposition of dark and light layers resulted from basin-wide synchronous events. In order to understand the origin of these dark-light cycles, petrographical, mineralogical, compositional, and paleontological studies were carried out on closely spaced samples from the upper Quaternary sediments recovered from Site 797. Age model was constructed based on comparison between variation in diatom abundance and the standard oxygen isotope curve of Imbrie et al. (1984), the latter was interpolated between the five age controlled levels established at Site 797. The two curves show similar patterns which enabled us to "tune" the sediment ages to the oxygen isotope stages. We have to use variation in diatom abundance as a substitute for oxygen isotope curve since oxygen isotopic data are not available at the studied sites. Bottom water oxygenation conditions were estimated based on two criteria: (1) the degree of lamina preservation and (2) the ratio of Corg to Stot. The surface water productivity was deduced from the Corg and biogenic silica content. Results suggest that the bottom water oxygenation level and the surface water productivity varied significantly in response to the glacial-interglacial cycles. Glacio-eustatic sea-level changes and subsequent changes in water circulation in the Japan Sea appear to have been responsible for these variations and consequent changes in sediment composition throughout the Quaternary.

Metabolic processes have the potential to modulate the effects of ocean acidification (OA) in nearshore macroalgal beds. We investigated whether natural mixed assemblages of the articulate coralline macroalgae Arthrocardia corymbosa and understory crustose coralline algae (CCA) altered pH and O2 concentrations within and immediately above their canopies. In a unidirectional flume, we tested the effect of water velocity (0-0.1 m/s), bulk seawater pH (ambient pH 8.05, and pH 7.65), and irradiance (photosynthetically saturating light and darkness) on pH and O2 concentration gradients, and the derived concentration boundary layer (CBL) thickness. At bulk seawater pH 7.65 and slow velocities (0 and 0.015 m/s), pH at the CCA surface increased to 7.90-8.00 in the light. Although these manipulations were short term, this indicates a potential daytime buffering capacity that could alleviate the effects of OA. Photosynthetic activity also increased O2 concentrations at the surface of the CCA. However, this moderating capacity was flow dependent; the CBL thickness decreased from an average of 26.8 mm from the CCA surface at 0.015 m/s to 4.1 mm at 0.04 m/s. The reverse trends occurred in the dark, with respiration causing pH and O2 concentrations to decrease at the CCA surface. At all flow velocities the CBL thicknesses (up to 68 mm) were much greater than those previously published, indicating that the presence of canopies can alter the CBL substantially. In situ, the height of macroalgal canopies can be an order of magnitude larger than those used here, indicating that the degree of buffering to OA will be context dependent.

Coastal ecosystems that are characterized by kelp forests encounter daily pH fluctuations, driven by photosynthesis and respiration, which are larger than pH changes owing to ocean acidification (OA) projected for surface ocean waters by 2100. We investigated whether mimicry of biologically mediated diurnal shifts in pH-based for the first time on pH time-series measurements within a kelp forest-would offset or amplify the negative effects of OA on calcifiers. In a 40-day laboratory experiment, the calcifying coralline macroalga, Arthrocardia corymbosa, was exposed to two mean pH treatments (8.05 or 7.65). For each mean, two experimental pH manipulations were applied. In one treatment, pH was held constant. In the second treatment, pH was manipulated around the mean (as a step-function), 0.4 pH units higher during daylight and 0.4 units lower during darkness to approximate diurnal fluctuations in a kelp forest. In all cases, growth rates were lower at a reduced mean pH, and fluctuations in pH acted additively to further reduce growth. Photosynthesis, recruitment and elemental composition did not change with pH, but ?(13)C increased at lower mean pH. Including environmental heterogeneity in experimental design will assist with a more accurate assessment of the responses of calcifiers to OA.

Copepods were sampled at two sampling sites off the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde Archipelago, in spring (March/April) and early summer (May/June) of 2010. The two sampling sites were located in Mindelo Bay (16.90N, 25.01W; bottom depth 22 m) and around 8 km off the town of São Pedro (16.77N, 25.12W; bottom depth 800 m). Samples were collected on board the local fishing vessel 'Sinagoga' using a WP-2 net (Hydrobios, 0.26 m**2 mouth opening, 200 µm mesh size). The net was either applied as a driftnet, drifting for 10 min in 22 to 0 m depth below the surface, or it was towed vertically with a towing speed of 0.5 m/s**1. For stratified sampling, the net was deployed in repetitive hauls from 560 to 210 m, from 210 to 80 m, and from 80 to 0 m in March/April and from 600 to 300 m, 300 to 100 m, and 100 to 0 m in May/June. Additional depth-integrated hauls were conducted from 600-0 m or 500-0 m during both field campaigns. Respiration rates of epi- and mesopelagic calanoid copepods were measured in the land-based laboratory at the Instituto Nacional de Desenvolvimento das Pescas (INDP) in Mindelo. Oxygen consumption was measured non-invasively by optode respirometry at three different ambient temperatures (13, 18, and 23°C) with a 10-channel oxygen respirometer (Oxy-10 Mini, PreSens Precision Sensing GmbH, Regensburg, Germany). All experiments were run in darkness in temperature-controlled incubators (LMS Cooled Incubator Series 1A, Model 280) equipped with water baths to ensure constant temperatures throughout the experiments, tolerating a variation of ±1°C.

Elevated seawater pCO2, and in turn ocean acidification (OA), is now widely acknowledged to reduce calcification and growth of reef building corals. As with other environmental factors (e.g., temperature and nutrients), light availability fundamentally regulates calcification and is predicted to change for future reef environments alongside elevated pCO2 via altered physical processes (e.g., sea level rise and turbidity); however, any potential role of light in regulating the OA-induced reduction of calcification is still unknown. We employed a multifactorial growth experiment to determine how light intensity and pCO2 together modify calcification for model coral species from two key genera, Acropora horrida and Porites cylindrica, occupying similar ecological niches but with different physiologies. We show that elevated pCO2 (OA)-induced losses of calcification in the light (G L) but not darkness (G D) were greatest under low-light growth conditions, in particular for A. horrida. High-light growth conditions therefore dampened the impact of OA upon G L but not G D. Gross photosynthesis (P G) responded in a reciprocal manner to G L suggesting OA-relieved pCO2 limitation of P G under high-light growth conditions to effectively enhance G L. A multivariate analysis of past OA experiments was used to evaluate whether our test species responses were more widely applicable across their respective genera. Indeed, the light intensity for growth was identified as a significant factor influencing the OA-induced decline of calcification for species of Acropora but not Porites. Whereas low-light conditions can provide a refuge for hard corals from thermal and light stress, our study suggests that lower light availability will potentially increase the susceptibility of key coral species to OA.

Tiled projector displays are a common choice for training simulators, where a high resolution output image is required. They are cheap for the resolution that they can reach and can be configured in many different ways. Nevertheless, such kinds of displays require geometric and color correction so that the composite image looks seamless. Display correction is an even bigger challenge when the projected images include dark scenes combined with brighter scenes. This is usually a problem for railway simulators when the train is positioned inside a tunnel and the black offset effect becomes noticeable. In this paper, a method for fast photometric and geometric correction of tiled display systems where dark and bright scenes are combined is presented. The image correction is carried out in two steps. First, geometric alignment and overlapping areas attenuation for brighter scenes is applied. Second, in the event of being inside a tunnel, the brightness of the scene is increased in certain areas using light sources in order to create the impression of darkness but minimizing the effect of the black offset

NADPH: protochlorophyllide oxido reductase (POR) A is a key enzyme of chlorophyll biosynthesis in angiosperms. It is nucleus-encoded, synthesized as a larger precursor in the cytosol and imported into the plastids in a substrate-dependent manner. Plastid envelope membrane proteins, called protochlorophyllide dependent translocon proteins, Ptcs, have been identified that interact with pPORA during import. Amongthem are a 16-kDa ortholog of the previously characterized outer envelope protein Oep16 (named Ptc16) and a33-kDa protein (Ptc33) related to the GTP-binding proteins Toc33 and Toc34 of Arabidopsis. In the present work, we studied the interactions and roles of Ptc16 and Ptc33 during pPORA import. Radio labeled Ptc16/Oep16 was synthesized from a corresponding cDNA and imported into isolated Arabidopsis plastids. Crosslinking experiments revealed that import of35S-Oep16/Ptc16 is stimulated by GTP.35S-Oep16/Ptc16forms larger complexes with Toc33 but not Toc34. Plastids of the ppi1 mutant of Arabidopsis lacking Toc33, were unable to import pPORA in darkness but imported the small subunit precursor of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (pSSU), precursor ferredoxin (pFd) as well as pPORB which is a close relative of pPORA. In white light, partial suppressions of pSSU, pFd and pPORB import were observed. Our results unveil a hitherto unrecognized role of Toc33 in pPORA import and suggest photo oxidative membrane damage, induced by excess Pchlide accumulating in ppi1 chloroplasts because of the lack of pPORA import, to be the cause of the general drop of protein import.

Senecio coincyi is a threatened endemic plant of central western Spain, with a very narrow extent of occurrence. The reproductive success and germination behaviour of this species were studied. The area of occupancy, habitat types and size of 13 known subpopulations of S. coincyi were evaluated. The number of individuals that form all these subpopulations was counted. In addition, the number of flowers and cypselas per fruit head and the number of fruit heads per individual plant were recorded in a subset of subpopulations. Germination tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of temperature and light regimes on, and possible intraspecific variation in, cypsela germination. Cypselas reached very high germination percentages (90?100%) from 15?C to 30?C. However, the germination decreased (19%) at 10?C. The light conditions assayed (16-h light photoperiod and complete darkness) did not significantly affect cypsela germination. In general, there was no intraspecific variability in germination patterns of S. coincyi cypselas. Livestock is the most important factor that can be a threat for this species. S. coincyi showed high reproductive success and, therefore, its conservation problems are not due to agents related to its reproduction, but rather to other factors such as alteration of its habitat caused by the presence of livestock.

A temperature accelerated life test on commercial concentrator lattice-matched GaInP/GaInAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells has been carried out. The solar cells have been tested at three different temperatures: 119, 126 and 164 °C and the nominal photo-current condition (820 X) has been emulated by injecting current in darkness. All the solar cells have presented catastrophic failures. The failure distributions at the three tested temperatures have been fitted to an Arrhenius-Weibull model. An Arrhenius activation energy of 1.58 eV was determined from the fit. The main reliability functions and parameters (reliability function, instantaneous failure rate, mean time to failure, warranty time) of these solar cells at the nominal working temperature (80 °C) have been obtained. The warranty time obtained for a failure population of 5 % has been 69 years. Thus, a long-term warranty could be offered for these particular solar cells working at 820 X, 8 hours per day at 80 °C.

The solar cells have been tested at three different temperatures: 125, 145 and 165°C and the nominal photo-current condition (500X) is emulated by injecting current in darkness. The final objective of these tests is to evaluate the reliability, warranty period, and failure mechanism of these solar cells in a moderate period of time. Up to now only the test at 165°C has finished. Therefore, we cannot provide complete reliability information, but we have carried out preliminary data and failure analysis with the current results.

ABSTRACT 1. Our research focuses on the study of “in-between spaces or environments” at particular times in contemporary architecture, in a transition period from the end of the 1980’s through to today. We aim to analyse how in-between environments are presented in the architectural object or place and their function or their relationship with the nearby surroundings, from the project through to the experience had. 2. In this research, the in-between concept, understood as an interstitial, border and ambivalent (or multi-purpose) environment or space, is assessed from the viewpoint of etymology, science, thought and art, to conclude in current architecture, with specific exploration of the conception process, of the formal, spatial and functional proposal, together with the perception and other experiences in the architectural place. 3. Firstly, we aim to study and explore the “in-between” concept as regards its features, functions and locations within contemporary culture, revealing its most important cultural background, to then apply it reflexively to important works of architecture. The research focuses on the figural (imprecise) mode of in-between (in allusion to Deleuze’s “figural” approach) whose base metaphors are the translucent, semi-darkness and foam, linked to the current cultural paradigm of complexity (C. Jenks). We then go on to assess the relationships or implications of said figural mode in architectural works by Eisenman, Holl, Tschumi, Ito, Fujimoto, Van Berkel and Bos, and Siza, verifying their operational worth and revealing their meaning and importance today and in this discipline. The backdrop of the study is the in-between concept of Eisenman’s work and it also uses concepts from the philosophy of the limit of Trías as its main underpinnings. 4. In each of the architectural works presented, this imprecise mode is translated into a specific in-between environment or space. They are works in which real and virtual, matricial and objectual, architecture and territory, existing and new, collective and individual, social and intimate, interior and exterior and other uses and functions all intertwine or blend together. They are architectures the geometry of which is not so much determined by bi- or tri-dimensional aspects of the drawing or construction. Through the manipulation of these more or less complex, dynamic and interstitial geometries, these works reflect (or insinuate) the premises of the current Zeitgeist: A change in the scheme of objects to relationships towards a more holistic, transdisciplinary, systemic or complex thought (E. Morin), and a new collective conscience about the reality which announces the crisis of perception, the change in paradigm and new values (F. Capra). Another way of feeling and perceiving the world, places and spaces, which little by little is changing the way of thinking and drawing architecture and hence of interacting with it. 5. The meaning of figural in-between space emerges in the increasingly complex, morphological-spatial and functional qualities of a large part of architecture today. Architecture, geometry and computer technology are more than ever intertwined in a freer way to inquire into other ways of thinking and making places, where the “in-between” spaces we research are a testimony. Architectural space becomes affective and interactive, a figural in-between place, formed by interstitial spatiality which seems to allude to something liquid, where shape is more matrix than configuration, space more spatiality than compartment, its function more versatile and multi-purpose than specific or autonomous, and perplexity, imagination and evocation criss-cross each other, becoming obvious. 6. The architecture of in-between places values not only “flat”, “configuration” and “transparency”, but above all “space” and the “relationship” in its interrelations with users and other contexts. From identity to relationality, from representation to presentation, it is an architecture that proposes “other spaces”, which more than spaces are topographies and interstitial spatialities, of tension, transition, transformation, relation, exchange and interaction. They are real and virtual in-between places, that take in both morphology and topology to conquer new spatialities, aiming to depart from the strict “forming”/”morphing” operation in order to explore “spacing”. They are places that derive both from Deleuze’s indiscernibility zone concept, from Buci-Glucksmann´s image-flow concept, from Sloterdijk’s suspension-between, and from the non-objective space referred to by José Gil, and they are embodied in contemporary architecture as tropes of the interstitial. 7. They are the in-between places in architecture today, of haptic spatiality, more “affective”, generative and interactive, where that in-between environment transforms and is transformed, “affects”, “moves” (it makes us move/act) and evokes other places, other possibilities of habitable or occupiable space. The in-between emerges as a place, which paradigmatically and declaredly, Eisenman´s monument in Berlin announces and exhibits.

Phosphorylation is thought to be an essential first step in the prompt deactivation of photoexcited rhodopsin. In vitro, the phosphorylation can be catalyzed either by rhodopsin kinase (RK) or by protein kinase C (PKC). To investigate the specific role of RK, we inactivated both alleles of the RK gene in mice. This eliminated the light-dependent phosphorylation of rhodopsin and caused the single-photon response to become larger and longer lasting than normal. These results demonstrate that RK is required for normal rhodopsin deactivation. When the photon responses of RK−/− rods did finally turn off, they did so abruptly and stochastically, revealing a first-order backup mechanism for rhodopsin deactivation. The rod outer segments of RK−/− mice raised in 12-hr cyclic illumination were 50% shorter than those of normal (RK+/+) rods or rods from RK−/− mice raised in constant darkness. One day of constant light caused the rods in the RK−/− mouse retina to undergo apoptotic degeneration. Mice lacking RK provide a valuable model for the study of Oguchi disease, a human RK deficiency that causes congenital stationary night blindness.
