Cyberbullying and students' engagement in school : a literature review

Bullying is one of today’s biggest problems. Bullying is the intentional repeated aggression directed at a target individual. There is substantial evidence of the negative psychological and health outcomes associated with bullying. It occurs very frequently, especially in adolescence, and action is needed to lessen its causes and alleviate its consequences. Research has shown that behavior problems usually interact with other risk and protection factors, as well as with factors of etiological development. This book discusses the prevalence, psychological impacts and intervention strategies of bullying.

Praxe académica : meio de integração ou ações de humilhação?

Esta investigação incidiu sobre o modo como estudantes de uma instituição portuguesa de ensino superior percecionam a praxe académica e situações de bullying na praxe. Os dados foram recolhidos através da escala de “Avaliação das situações de Bullying nas Praxes do Ensino Superior”, organizada em três fatores: Relação Positiva com a Praxe, Relação Negativa com a Praxe e Dimensão Social (Matos, Jesus, Simões & Nave,2010). Participaram no estudo 247 estudantes de ambos os sexos, entre os 18 e os 43 anos, de diferentes anos, cursos e departamentos. Os resultados indicaram diferenças significativas a nível da Relação Positiva com a Praxe entre o género (masculino e o feminino; p=0.001 < α=0.05) e entre faixas etárias (“20 ou menos anos” e com “mais de 20 anos”; p=0.024 < α=0.05). Permitiram, também, observar diferenças significativas entre os anos dos cursos (1º, 2º ou 3º ano) a nível da Relação Positiva com a Praxe (p=0.04 < α=0.05) e da Dimensão Social (p=0.017 < α=0.05). Finalmente indicaram diferenças significativas entre os departamentos de pertença dos alunos no que concerne à Relação Positiva com a Praxe (p=0.02 < α=0.05) e à Relação Negativa com a Praxe (p=0.02 < α=0.05). As correlações obtidas entre os três apresentaram-se estatisticamente significativas, considerando nível de significância de 1% (respetivamente, p=0.02; p=0.00 e p=0.00).

Malaria vectors in the Brazilian Amazon: Anopheles of the subgenus Nyssorhynchus

Various species of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) were studied in the Amazon with the objective of determining their importance as malaria vectors. Of the 33 known Anopheles species occurring in the Amazon, only 9 were found to be infected with Plasmodium. The different species of this subgenus varied both in diversity and density in the collection areas. The populations showed a tendency towards lower density and diversity in virgin forest than in areas modified by human intervention. The principal vector, An. darlingi, is anthropophilic with a continuous activity cycle lasting the entire night but peaking at sunset and sunrise. These species (Nyssorhynchus) are peridomiciliary, entering houses to feed on blood and immediately leaving to settle on nearby vegetation. Anopheles nuneztovari proved to be zoophilic, crepuscular and peridomiciliary. These habits may change depending on a series of external factors, especially those related to human activity. There is a possibility that sibling species exist in the study area and they are being studied with reference to An. darlingi, An. albitarsis and An. nuneztovari. The present results do not suggest the existence of subpopulations of An. darlingi in the Brazilian Amazon.

A Brother or a Sister With CP. How Much it Makes a Difference in Childhood and Adulthood?

Every month we see to be published dozens of scientific papers about etiology and physiopathology of CP, imaging, treatment, survival, quality of life of patients and of mothers (just a few) and so on. Papers dealing with the feelings and the problems of siblings of children and adults with CP in the most important scientific journals are extremely rare. However in internet we can find the sites of the most important Cerebral Palsy Societies, like the British, the Australian and the American ones already devoting a special attention to the issue of siblings; we also can see several interesting blogs of parents sharing their experiences not only with the handicapped child but also with the siblings, even counseling some books written for children giving practical advices how to deal and live with a handicapped sibling. What was a surprise to me were the several sites of adults having a disabled sibling, frequently with CP, in a new situation: without parents to care them.
