This case study explored strategies and techniques in order to assist individuals with learning disabilities in their academic achievement. Of particular focus was how a literacy-based program, titled The Spring Reading Program, utilizes effective tactics and approaches that result in academic growth. The Spring Reading Program, offered by the Learning Disabilities Association of Niagara Region (LDANR) and partnered with John McNamara from Brock University, supports children with reading disabilities academically. In addition, the program helps children increase their confidence and motivation towards literacy. I began this study by outlining the importance of reading followed by and exploration of what educators and researchers have demonstrated regarding effective literacy instruction for children with learning disabilities. I studied effective strategies and techniques in the Spring Reading Program by conducting a qualitative case study of the program. This case study subsequently presents in depth, 4 specific strategies: Hands-on activities, motivation, engagement, and one-on-one instruction. Each strategy demonstrates its effectiveness through literature and examples from the Spring Reading Program.

This case study traces the evolution of library assignments for biological science students from paper-based workbooks in a blended (hands-on) workshop to blended learning workshops using online assignments to online active learning modules which are stand-alone without any face-to-face instruction. As the assignments evolved to adapt to online learning supporting materials in the form of PDFs (portable document format), screen captures and screencasting were embedded into the questions as teaching moments to replace face-to-face instruction. Many aspects of the evolution of the assignment were based on student feedback from evaluations, input from senior lab demonstrators and teaching assistants, and statistical analysis of the students’ performance on the assignment. Advantages and disadvantages of paper-based and online assignments are discussed. An important factor for successful online learning may be the ability to get assistance.

Les manuels d’histoire ont souvent fait l’objet d’analyses concernant leur contenu et leur qualité, mais rarement leurs usages en classe. Cette thèse vise à décrire et analyser comment des enseignants d’histoire du Québec au secondaire utilisent le manuel et toute autre ressource didactique. Le problème consiste à mieux connaître ce qui se passe en classe depuis l’implantation de la réforme curriculaire, en 2001, et comment les conceptions des enseignants influencent leurs pratiques en lien avec l’exercice de la méthode historique. Ce travail décrit des pratiques enseignantes selon leur intervention éducative, les ressources didactiques utilisées et l’activité de l’élève en classe. Pour ce faire, la collecte de données est réalisée au travers d’un sondage en ligne (n= 81), d’observations en classe et d’entrevues (n=8) avec les participants. Les enseignants d’histoire utilisent souvent le manuel, mais leur intervention n’est pas structurée par son contenu ou ses exercices. Les cahiers d’exercices ou le récit de l’enseignant semblent structurer principalement leurs interventions. En fait, leurs conceptions sur l’enseignement et l’apprentissage en histoire déterminent le plus souvent l’usage du manuel et des autres ressources didactiques d’une manière traditionnelle ou d’une manière qui exerce authentiquement la méthode historique. Afin de décrire ces différents usages, la thèse propose une typologie qui distingue les différentes modalités mises en place afin d’utiliser les ressources didactiques et exercer la méthode historique. Trois principaux types sont énoncés : intensif, extensif et critique. Un quatrième type a été ajouté afin de mieux nuancer les différentes pratiques enseignantes rencontrées : extensif-méthodique. Ce dernier type s’explique par une pratique enseignante qui concilie les types extensif et critique selon les besoins de l’enseignant. La thèse souligne la persistance de pratiques transmissives et magistrocentrées qui limitent un exercice authentique de la méthode historique, alors que le curriculum vise un enseignement constructiviste et que plus de ressources sont disponibles pour les enseignants.

Université de Montréal implemented an interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum on collaborative practice in a large cohort of students (>1,100) from 10 health sciences and psychosocial sciences training programs. It is made up of three one-credit undergraduate courses (CSS1900, CSS2900, CSS3900) spanning the first 3 years of training. The course content and activities aim for development of the six competency domains identified by the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative. This paper describes the IPE curriculum and highlights the features contributing to its success and originality. Among main success key factors were: administrative cooperation among participating faculties, educators eager to develop innovative approaches, extensive use of clinical situations conducive to knowledge and skill application, strong logistic support, close cooperation with health care delivery organizations, and partnership between clinicians and patients. A distinguishing feature of this IPE curriculum is the concept of partnership in care between the patient and caregivers. Patients’ representatives were involved in course planning, and patients were trained to become patients-as-trainers (PT) and cofacilitate interprofessional discussion workshops. They give feed- back to students regarding integration and application of the patient partnership concept from a patient’s point of view. This thesis Entitled Internet Utilization and Academic Activities of Faculty Members in the Universities of kerala: an analytical study. Today, scientific research is throwing up new discoveries, inventions and vistas by the hour. We are witnessing a veritable knowledge explosion. It is important for members of university faculty members to keep abreast of it for giving up-t-date information to their students about the new development in the subject of their study. The internet is an invaluable tool for achieving it. Most of the universities have sufficient internet facility, but the accessibility to all the faculty members is not adequate. University Libraries also provides standard supplementary service in the internet area. This study indicates differential level of awareness and utilization of the internet services by the faculty members in the areas of teaching, research and publication. However the overall impression is that the awareness and utilization is inadequate. This point to the urgent need to devise programs and schemes to promote internet utilization among the faculty members. The suggestions indicate the key areas that deserve attention by policy makers and administrators. Thanks to the internet, every new development in every field of study is just a click away for faculty members, research scholars and students.

El servicio WFS-G de Nomenclátor del Instituto de Cartografía de Andalucía (ICA) basa sus servicios en una base de datos que sigue el estándar del Modelo de Nomenclátor de España y que actualmente contiene unos 149.500 topónimos e identificadores geográficos clasificados temáticamente en áreas administrativas, entidades de población, hidrografía, orografía, patrimonio, infraestructuras, actividades industriales, extractivas, servicios y equipamientos. Este servicio OGC basado en el software libre Deegree 2.2. trata de dar servicio a otros proyectos del ICA como la IDEAndalucia, el catálogo de productos on-line LINE@ y en un futuro al buscador de cartografía histórica; por otro lado dispone de un visor propio de búsqueda de nombres geográficos con utilidades de descarga, rectificación y localización de topónimos cercanos

Much of the self-image of the Western university hangs on the idea that research and teaching are intimately connected. The central axiom here is that research and teaching are mutually supportive of each other. An institution lacking such a set of relationships between research and teaching falls short of what it means to be a university. This set of beliefs raises certain questions: Is it the case that the presence of such a mutually supportive set of relationships between research and teaching is a necessary condition of the fulfilment of the idea of the university? (A conceptual question). And is it true that, in practice today, such a mutually supportive set of relationships between research and teaching characterises universities? (An empirical question). In my talk, I want to explore these matters in a critical vein. I shall suggest that: a) In practice today, such a mutually supportive set of relationships between research and teaching is in jeopardy. Far from supporting each other, very often research and teaching contend against each other. Research and teaching are becoming two separate ideologies, with their own interest structures. b) Historically, the supposed tight link between research and teaching is both of recent origin and far from universally achieved in universities. Institutional separateness between research and teaching is and has been evident, both across institutions and even across departments in the same institution. c) Conceptually, research and teaching are different activities: each is complex and neither is reducible to the other. In theory, therefore, research and teaching may be said to constitute a holy alliance but in practice, we see more of an unholy alliance. If, then, in an ideal world, a positive relationship between research and teaching is still a worthwhile goal, how might it be construed and worked for? Seeing research and teaching as two discrete and unified sets of activity is now inadequate. Much better is a construal of research and teaching as themselves complexes, as intermingling pools of activity helping to form the liquid university that is emerging today. On this view, research and teaching are fluid spaces, ever on the move, taking up new shapes, and themselves dividing and reforming, as the university reworks its own destiny in modern society. On such a perspective, working out a productive relationship between research and teaching is a complex project. This is an alliance that is neither holy nor unholy. It is an uneasy alliance, with temporary accommodations and continuous new possibilities

En este trabajo se realiza una descripción y análisis del esquema de funcionamiento detrás del emergente mercado de las compras colectivas y los cupones online desde una perspectiva tanto teórica como empírica. Inicialmente, se desarrolla un marco teórico teniendo en cuenta elementos de: teoría económica, e-marketing y comercio electrónico en los que se basa éste mercado. Posteriormente, se muestra el proyecto de implementación de una plataforma virtual y un sistema de incentivos basado en el esquema de cupones online desarrollado por el autor para la franquicia de tarjetas de crédito Diners Club International del Banco Davivienda S.A. en Colombia

Su objetivo es ofrecer apoyo práctico a los profesores de primaria con poca experiencia en la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras. Para ello, se proporciona orientación en la elección, preparación, organización y gestión de juegos, orientados a la práctica de idiomas y para alumnos menores de once años, aunque también pueden servir para niños más pequeños o con necesidades educativas especiales. Las actividades se realizan en grupo, en un ambiente relajado y divertido; la mayoría son sencillas, pues no requieren preparación, aunque algunas más complicadas necesitan planificación y uso de diveros materiales. Al final del libro, unos apéndices con ejemplos e instrucciones en las lenguas francesa y alemana, pueden ser de utilidad para profesores y alumnos.

Hi ha dos tipus d'interrogants que ens plantegem en aquesta presentació: En primer lloc exposem un seguit de realitats que afecten directament al disseny de la nostra assignatura: els professors assumim habilitats apreses en tècniques de treball dels nostres estudiants: treball en equip, presentacions, debats.... Els uns i els altres entenem el mateix, del què i el com s'ha de treballar? Ho comprovarem. Alhora, ens preguntarem si els estudiants assumim habilitats tecnològiques del professorat? Moodle, wikis, Twitter, xats..... tots entenem el mateix i els fem servir de la mateixa manera? Fixem-nos en les dues perspectives, la del professor i la de l'estudiant, tant referent a dinamiques com a recursos, i ens adonarem que cal tenir en compte tant la una com l'altra. Aquestes reflexions afecten al plantejament de l'assignatura i ens deixen clar que hi ha molta feina a fer per trobar les respostes (conèixer als estudiants que tenim a les aules, explicar convenientment el que esperem dels estudiants, com plantegem l'assignatura i com l'avaluarem... ) No ens referim exclusivament a tenir un pla docent detallat a la maxima expresió, sinó que ens referim a reconèixer el com, el quan i el que expliquem als nostres estudiants, de manera que les regles del joc quedin enteses de la mateixa manera per una part i per l'altra. A partir d'aquí, i com a segon interrogant, ens plantejarem l'estructura que combina la part presencial i la part no presencial de l'assignatura: Quines són les activitats de les que puc treure més rendiment en la part presencial de l'assignatura i quines en la part no presencial? Quant temps i com calcular-lo, cal invertir en les activitats, tant per part dels estudiants com per part del professorat? Com podem avaluar una activitat que ha estat realitzada en part presencial i en part no presencial

El trabajo formula propuestas para la utilización de recursos didácticos basados en fuentes primarias en la docencia universitaria de ciencias sociales. Nos centramos en las fuentes disponibles en el Archivo Histórico Eclesiástico de Bizkaia, que en los últimos años ha realizado un esfuerzo notable por dar accesibilidad online a sus fondos. La comunicación explora las potencialidades que ofrece este tipo de fuentes, al permitir a los estudiantes universitarios entrar en contacto con fuentes originales, criticarlas, efectuar un tratamiento correcto de la información y, en definitiva, aproximarse al método científico. Todo ello diseñado desde una perspectiva centrada en el estudiante
