p-aminobenzoate could be intercalated into the anionic clay, Ni3Zn2(OH)(8)(OAc)(2)center dot 2H(2)O at a high pH (similar to 10). When the pH was reduced to similar to 7 while washing colloidal dispersion due to delamination was observed. The development of partial positive charge on the amine end of the intercalated anion causes repulsion between the layers leading to delamination and colloidal dispersion of monolayers in water. The layers could be restacked from the colloid to form the parent solid either by increasing the pH or by evaporation.

Core-shell CoFe2O4@BaTiO3 nanoparticles and nanotubes have been prepared using a combination of solution processing and high temperature calcination. Both the core-shell nanostructures exhibit magnetic and dielectric hysteresis at room temperature and magnetoelectric effect. The dielectric constant of both the nanocomposites decreases upon application of magnetic field. The core-shell nanoparticles exhibit 1.7% change in magnetocapacitance around 134 K at 1 T, while the core-shell nanotubes show a remarkable 4.5% change in magnetocapacitance around 310 K at 2 T.(C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Polypyrrole (PPy) - multiwalled carbonnanotubes (MWCNT) nanocomposites with various MWCNT loading were prepared by in situ inversion emulsion polymerization technique. High loading of the nano filler were evaluated because of available inherent high interface area for charge separation in the nanocomposites. Solution processing of these conducting polymer nanocomposites is difficult because, most of them are insoluble in organic solvents. Device quality films of these composites were prepared by using pulsed laser deposition techniques (PLD). Comparative study of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of bulk and film show that there is no chemical modification of polymer on ablation with laser. TEM images indicate PPy layer on MWCNT surface. SEM micrographs indicate that the MWCNT's are distributed throughout the film. It was observed that MWCNT in the composite held together by polymer matrix. Further more MWCNT diameter does not change from bulk to film indicating that the polymer layer remains intact during ablation. Even for very high loadings (80 wt.% of MWCNT's) of nanocomposites device quality films were fabricated, indicating laser ablation is a suitable technique for fabrication of device quality films. Conductivity of both bulk and films were measured using collinear four point probe setup. It was found that overall conductivity increases with increase in MWCNT loading. Comparative study of thickness with conductivity indicates that maximum conductivity was observed around 0.2 mu m. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In EHV and UHV power transmission lines, corona could occur even on well designed transmission line hardware and insulators especially under wet conditions. Corona if allowed to occur continuously can significantly damage the polymeric insulators used in such lines in the long run. This paper presents the experimental results of corona aging studies conducted on unfilled silicone rubber as well as filled silicone rubber nanocomposites. Corona aging studies were conducted on silicone rubber samples with filler concentrations of 0, 1, 2 and 3 % by wt of nanosilica for 25 h and 50 h. Needle-plane electrode geometry has been used to create the corona on the samples. Different characterization techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis, Hydrophobicity, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and Optical Profilometry have been used to assess the relative performance of the samples with respect to corona aging. Results indicate that at 3 wt %, the performance of the nanocomposite is much better than the unfilled silicon rubber which can be attributed to the modifications in the material caused by the size factor of the filler.

Surface elastic strain field generated in conical indentation of sintered alumina clay composite was measured to verify the suitability of a superposed combination of Boussinesq and blister stress fields, used previously for analysing the indentation problem. The residual strain measured in the elastic hinterland is used to estimate the blister field strength without any reference to stress relation within that field. The approach may be useful in fracture studies of brittle materials.

The complex permittivity characteristics of epoxy nanocomposite systems were examined and an attempt has been made to understand the underlying physics governing some of the unique macroscopic dielectric behaviors. The experimental investigations were performed using two different nanocomposite systems with low filler concentrations over the frequency range of 10(-2)-400 Hz, but for some cases, the data has been reported upto 10(6) Hz for a better understanding of the behaviors. Results demonstrate that nanocomposites do possess unique permittivity behaviors as compared to those already known for unfilled polymer and microcomposite systems. The nanocomposite real permittivity and tan delta values are found to be lower than that of unfilled epoxy. In addition, results show that interfacial polarization and charge carrier mobilities are suppressed in epoxy nanocomposite systems. The complex permittivity spectra coupled with the ac conductivity characteristics with respect to frequency was found to be sufficient to identify several of the nanocomposite characteristics like the reduction in permittivity values, reduction in the interfacial polarization mechanisms and the electrical conduction behaviors. Analysis of the results are also performed using electric modulus formalisms and it has been seen that the nanocomposite dielectric behaviors at low frequencies can also be explained clearly using this formalism.

The Cam-clay models, or any other plasticity-based models, do not make distinction between the mode of stress transfer in coarse- and fine-grained soils. An examination of behavior at micro level in fine-grained soils, from the consideration of load transfer through physico-chemical interactions, suggests that the plastic compressions result from the grouping of particles into larger clusters and that elastic compressions result from the decrease in the spacing between particles. During shearing, these clusters gradually get dismembered, releasing the locked-in energy. The effect of such dismembering of clusters can be easily incorporated into the original Cam-clay model, and better predictions can be obtained with the associated flow rule, itself, for both normally and over consolidated states. The method essentially defines the hardening of yield surfaces with internal changes in the spacing between particles, instead of changes in externally observed plastic strains. The approach describes the behavior of over consolidated soils as yielding along successfively hardening Roscoe surfaces with gradually varying plastic properties.

Unsaturated clays are subject to osmotic suction gradients in geoenvironmental engineering applications and it therefore becomes important to understand the effect of these chemical concentration gradients on soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs). This paper brings out the influence of induced osmotic suction gradient on the wetting SWCCs of compacted clay specimens inundated with sodium chloride solutions/distilled water at vertical stress of 6.25 kPa in oedometer cells. The experimental results illustrate that variations in initial osmotic suction difference induce different magnitudes of osmotic induced consolidation and osmotic consolidation strains thereby impacting the wetting SWCCs and equilibrium water contents of identically compacted clay specimens. Osmotic suction induced by chemical concentration gradients between reservoir salt solution and soil-water can be treated as an equivalent net stress component, (p(pi)) that decreases the swelling strains of unsaturated specimens from reduction in microstructural and macrostructural swelling components. The direction of osmotic flow affects the matric SWCCs. Unsaturated specimens experiencing osmotic induced consolidation and osmotic consolidation develop lower equilibrium water content than specimens experiencing osmotic swelling during the wetting path. The findings of the study illustrate the need to incorporate the influence of osmotic suction in determination of the matric SWCCs.

The physical properties of surface soil horizons, essentially pore size, shape, continuity and affinity for water, regulate water entry into the soil. These properties are prone to changes caused by natural forces and human activity. The hydraulic properties of the surface soil greatly impact the generation of surface runoff and accompanied erosion, the major concern of agricultural water protection. The general target of this thesis was to improve our understanding of the structural and hydraulic properties of boreal clay soils. Physical properties of a clayey surface soil (0 - 10 cm, clay content 51%), with a micaceous/illitic mineralogy subjected to three different management practices of perennial vegetation, were studied. The study sites were vegetated buffer zones located side by side in SW Finland: 1) natural vegetation with no management, 2) harvested once a year, and 3) grazed by cattle. The soil structure, hydraulic properties, shrinkage properties and soil water repellency were determined at all sites. Two distinct flow domains were evident. The surface soil was characterized by subangular blocky, angular blocky and platy aggregates. Hence, large, partially accommodated, irregular elongated pores dominated the macropore domain at all sites. The intra-aggregate pore system was mostly comprised of pores smaller than 30 μm, which are responsible for water storage. Macropores at the grazed site, compacted by hoof pressure, were horizontally oriented and pore connectivity was poorest, which decreased water and air flux compared with other sites. Drying of the soil greatly altered its structure. The decrease in soil volume between wet and dry soil was 7 - 10%, most of which occurred in the moisture range of field conditions. Structural changes, including irreversible collapse of interaggregate pores, began at matric potentials around -6 kPa indicating, instability of soil structure against increasing hydraulic stress. Water saturation and several freezethaw cycles between autumn and spring likely weakened the soil structure. Soil water repellency was observed at all sites at the time of sampling and when soil was dryer than about 40 vol.%. (matric potential < -6 kPa). Therefore, water repellency contributes to water flow over a wide moisture range. Water repellency was also observed in soils with low organic carbon content (< 2%), which suggests that this phenomenon is common in agricultural soils of Finland due to their relatively high organic carbon content. Aggregate-related pedofeatures of dense infillings described as clay intrusions were found at all sites. The formation of these intrusions was attributed to clay dispersion and/or translocation during spring thaw and drying of the suspension in situ. These processes generate very new aggregates whose physical properties are most probably different from those of the bulk soil aggregates. Formation of the clay infillings suggested that prolonged wetness in autumn and spring impairs soil structure due to clay dispersion, while on the other hand it contributes to the pedogenesis of the soil. The results emphasize the dynamic nature of the physical properties of clay soils, essentially driven by their moisture state. In a dry soil, fast preferential flow is favoured by abundant macropores including shrinkage cracks and is further enhanced by water repellency. Increase in soil moisture reduces water repellency, and swelling of accommodated pores lowers the saturated hydraulic conductivity. Moisture- and temperature-related processes significantly alter soil structure over a time span of 1 yr. Thus, the pore characteristics as well as the hydraulic properties of soil are time-dependent.

Research on conducting polymers, organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells has been an exciting field for the past decade. The challenge with these organic devices is the long term stability of the active material. Organic materials are susceptible to chemical degradation in the presence of oxygen and moisture. The sensitivity of these materials towards oxygen and moisture makes it imperative to protect them by encapsulation. Polymer nanocomposites can be used as encapsulation materials in order to prevent material degradation. In the present work, amine functionalized alumina was used as a cross-linking and reinforcing material for the polymer matrix in order to fabricate the composites to be used for encapsulation of devices. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to elucidate the surface chemistry. Thermogravimetric analysis techniques and CHN analysis were used to quantify grafting density of amine groups over the surface of the nanoparticles. Mechanical characterizations of the composites with various loadings were carried out with dynamic mechanical analyzer. It was observed that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility, which are important for an encapsulant. The morphology of the composites was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

The reported presence in marine clays and the recognized role of polysaccharide as a bonding agent provided the motivation to examine the role of starch polysaccharide in the remoulded properties of nonswelling (kaolinite) and swelling (bentonite) groups of clays. The starch polysaccharide belongs to a group of naturally occurring, large-sized organic molecules (termed polymers) and is built up by extensive repetition of simple chemical units called repeat units. The results of the study indicate that the impact of the starch polysaccharide on the remoulded properties of clays is dependent on the mineralogy of the clays. On addition to bentonite clay, the immensely large number of segments (repeat units) of the starch polysaccharide create several polymer segment - clay surface bonds that cause extensive aggregation of the bentonite units layers. The aggregation of the bentonite unit layers greatly curtails the available surface area of the clay mineral for diffuse ion layer formation. The reduction in diffuse ion layer thickness markedly lowers the consistency limits and vane shear strength of the bentonite clay. On addition to kaolinite, the numerous polymer segment - clay surface bonds enhance the tendency of the kaolinite particles to flocculate. The enhanced particle flocculation is responsible apparently for a small to moderate increase in the liquid limit and remoulded undrained strength of the nonswelling clay.

The mechanical properties of composites of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with two-dimensional graphene-like boron nitride (BN) have been investigated to explore the dependence of the properties on the number of BN layers. This study demonstrates that significantly improved mechanical properties are exhibited by the composite with the fewest number of BN layers. Thus, with incorporation of three BN layers, the hardness and elastic modulus of the composite showed an increase of 125% and 130%, respectively, relative to pure PMMA. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Epoxy nanocomposite samples with a good dispersion of alumina nanoparticles in epoxy matrix were prepared and experiments were performed to measure their partial discharge resistant characteristics. Epoxy alumina nanocomposites with 0.1, 1, 5, 10 and 15 wt% nanofillers were prepared in the laboratory and partial discharge (PD) experiments were conducted at a voltage of 10 kV for different durations using IEC (b) type electrodes. The degradation of the sample surfaces were analyzed using SEM techniques, surface profile studies, FTIR spectroscopy as well as PD studies. An attempt was made to understand the interaction dynamics between the nanoparticle and the epoxy chain by measuring the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites. The partial discharge resistance obtained for the nanocomposites are compared with those of unfilled epoxy and epoxy microcomposites. It was observed that even with 0.1 wt% of nanofiller added to the epoxy matrix, the partial discharge resistance to degradation gets improved considerably. It was also observed that the inter particle distance has a significant effect on the discharge resistance to degradation. The improvement in the degradation resistance is attributed to the interactions between the nanoparticle and the epoxy chain. A possible mechanism for the surface degradation of nanocomposites has been proposed.
