Following the latest environmental concerns, the importance of minimising the detrimental effect of emissions of terrestrial vehicles has become a major goal for the whole automotive field. The key to achieve an emission-free long term future is the electrification of vehicle fleets; this huge step cannot be taken without intermediate technologies. In this context, hybrid vehicles are fundamental to reach this goal. Specifically, mild hybrid vehicles represent a trade-off between cost and emissions that could act now as a bridge towards electrification. Like the industry, also student engineering competitions are likely to take the same route: Combustion vehicles may well turn into hybrid vehicles. For this reason, a preliminary design overview is necessary to pinpoint the key performance indicators for the prototypes of the future.

Based on previous results obtained from observations and linear wave theory analysis, the hypothesis that large-scale patterns can generate extreme cold events in southeast South America through the propagation of remotely excited Rossby waves was already suggested. This work will confirm these findings and extend their analysis through a series of numerical experiments using a primitive equation model where waves are excited by a thermal forcing situated in positions chosen according to observed convection anomalies over the equatorial region. The basic state used for these experiments is a composite of austral winters with maximum and minimum frequency of occurrence of generalized frosts that can affect a large area known as the Wet Pampas located in the central and eastern part of Argentina. The results suggest that stationary Rossby waves may be one important mechanism linking anomalous tropical convection with the extreme cold events in the Wet Pampas. The combination of tropical convection and a specific basic state can generate the right environment to guide the Rossby waves trigged by the tropical forcing towards South America. Depending on the phase of the waves entering the South American continent, they can favour the advection of anomalous wind at low levels from the south carrying cold and dry air over the whole southern extreme of the continent, producing a generalized frost in the Wet Pampa region. On the other hand, when a basic state based on the composites of minimum frosts is used, an anomalous anticyclone over the southern part of the continent generates a circulation with a south-southeast wind which brings maritime air and therefore humidity over the Wet Pampas region, creating negative temperature anomalies only over the northeastern part of the region. Under these conditions even if frosts occur they would not be generalized, as observed for the other basic state with maximum frequency of occurrence of generalized frosts.

One of the e-learning environment goal is to attend the individual needs of students during the learning process. The adaptation of contents, activities and tools into different visualization or in a variety of content types is an important feature of this environment, bringing to the user the sensation that there are suitable workplaces to his profile in the same system. Nevertheless, it is important the investigation of student behaviour aspects, considering the context where the interaction happens, to achieve an efficient personalization process. The paper goal is to present an approach to identify the student learning profile analyzing the context of interaction. Besides this, the learning profile could be analyzed in different dimensions allows the system to deal with the different focus of the learning.

The olfactory nervous system is responsible for the detection of odors. Primary sensory olfactory neurons are located in a neuroepithelial sheet lining the nasal cavity. The axons from these neurons converge on to discrete loci or glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. Each glomerulus consists of the termination of thousands of primary axons on the dendrites of second-order olfactory neurons. What are the molecular mechanisms which guide growing olfactory axons to select sites in the olfactory bulb? We have shown that subpopulations of these axons differentially express cell surface carbohydrates and that these different subpopulations target and terminate in particular regions of the olfactory bulb. Interestingly, the olfactory neurons and glial components in the olfactory pathway between the nose and brain express galectin-1. By using in vitro assays of neurite outgrowth we found that both galectin-1 and it's ligands were capable of specifically stimulating neurite elongation. Examination of the olfactory system in galectin-1 null mutants revealed that a subpopulation of axons failed to navigate to their target site in the olfactory bulb. This is the first phenotypic effect observed in galectin-1 null mutants and indicates that galectin-1 has a role in the growth and/or guidance of a subpopulation of axons in the olfactory system during development.

Objective Predictive factors of damage to the Fallopian tube may guide the treatment of Patients with tubal pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between the depth of trophoblastic invasion into the tubal wall, assessed on postoperative histological examination, with the findings obtained on transvaginal sonograpby (TVS) in women with ampullary Methods Women with ampullary pregnancy undergoing salpingectomy were enrolled into the study. Only women with a finding of either an embryo with cardiac activity or a tubal ring on TVS were included in the analysis, a total of 8.5 patients. Trophoblastic invasion was assessed postoperatively and was histologically classified as Stage I when limited to the tubal mucosa, Stage II when extending to the muscle layer and Stage III in the case of complete tubal wall infiltration. The association between findings on TVS and the stage of trophoblastic invasion was evaluated. Results There was a significant association between the findings on TVS and the depth of trophoblastic invasion (P < 0.001). All patients in whom an embryo with cardiac activity bad been identified were found to have Stage II (17.9%) or Stage III (82.1%) invasion, whereas in those patients who showed a tubal ring on TVS, Stage I invasion was the most frequent finding (41.3%). Conclusions In ampullary pregnancy, the finding on TVS of an embryo with cardiac activity is associated with deeper penetration of trophoblastic tissue into the tubal wall than is the finding of a tubal ring. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of light guide distance and the different photoactivation methods on the degree of conversion (DC) and microleakage of a composite. Methods and Materials: Three photoactivation protocols (600mW/cm(2) x 40 seconds; 400 mW/cm(2) x 60 seconds or 200 mW/cm(2) x 20 seconds, followed by 500 mW/cm(2) X 40 seconds) and three distances from the light source (0, 3 or 7 mm) were tested. Cylindrical specimens (5 nun diameter; 2 mm tall; n=3) were prepared for the DC test (FT-Raman). Class V cavities were made in 90 bovine incisors to conduct the microleakage test. The specimens were conditioned for 15 seconds with phosphoric acid (37%), followed by application of the adhesive system Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply/Caulk). The preparations were restored in bulk. The specimens were stored for 24 hours in distilled water (37 degrees C) before being submitted to the silvernitrate microleakage protocol. The restorations were sectioned and analyzed under 25x magnification. Results: Statistical analyses (two-way ANOVAs and Tukey test, alpha=0.05) found significance only for the factor distance (p=0.015) at the top of the composite for the DC test. Conversion was statistically lower for the 7 mm groups compared to the 0 and 3 mm groups, which were equivalent to each other. At the bottom of the specimens, none of the factors or interactions was significant (p<0.05). The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that, in general, the soft-start method led to lower microleakage scores when compared to the continuous modes, mainly when associated with a distancing of 7 mm (p<0.01). With the exception of specimens irradiated with 400mW/cm(2) that did not demonstrate variations on scores for the distances tested, higher microleakage was observed for shorter distances from the light source. Conclusions: Soft-start methods may reduce microleakage when the light guide distancing provides a low level of irradiance, which also causes a discrete reduction in the DC.

Following the application of the remember/know paradigm to student learning by Conway et al. (1997), this study examined changes in learning and memory awareness of university students in a lecture course and a research methods course. The proposed shift from a dominance of 'remember' awareness in early learning to a dominance of 'know' awareness as learning progresses and schematization occurs was evident for the methods course but not for the lecture course. The patterns of remember and know awareness and proposed associated levels of schematization were supported by a separate measure of the quality of student learning using the SOLO (Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes) Taxonomy. As found by previous research, the remember-to-know shift and schematization of knowledge is dependent upon type of course and level of achievement. Findings are discussed in terms of the utility of the methodology used, the theoretical implications and the applications to educational practice. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In an attempt to build a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of the complexity, dynamics and idiosyncrasies involved in becoming a teacher, this study focussed on the experiences of 295 student teachers. Their feelings, cognitions and perceptions regarding teaching practice were analysed using the short version of the Inventory of Experiences and Perceptions of the Teaching Practice. Results emphasise some of the difficulties experienced during this period (e.g., stress, sense of weariness and ‘vulnerability’), as well the positive perceptions of these student teachers regarding their growing knowledge and skilfulness, as well as their sense of efficacy, flexibility and spontaneity in their performance and interactions. Their perception of their accomplishments in achieving reasonable levels of acceptance and recognition within the school community and their positive evaluation of the guidance and support provided by their supervisors are also emphasised. Differences were found – in terms of gender and graduate course background – in the way these student teachers experienced some aspects of teaching practice.

BACKGROUND: This study's objective was to evaluate the role of psychological adjustment in the decision-making process to have an abortion and explore individual variables that might influence this decision. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we sequentially enrolled 150 women who made the decision to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy in Maternity Dr. Alfredo da Costa, in Lisbon, Portugal, between September 2008 and June 2009. The instruments were the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS), Satisfaction with Social Support Scale (SSSS), Emotional Assessment Scale (EAS), Decision Conflict Scale (DCS), and Beliefs and Values Questionnaire (BVQ). We analyzed the data using Student's T-tests, MANOVA, ANOVA, Tukey's post-hoc tests and CATPCA. Statistically significant effects were accepted for p<0.05. RESULTS: The participants found the decision difficult and emotionally demanding, although they also identified it as a low conflict decision. The prevailing emotions were sadness, fear and stress; but despite these feelings, the participants remained psychologically adjusted in the moment they decided to have an abortion. The resolution to terminate the pregnancy was essentially shared with supportive people and it was mostly motivated by socio-economic issues. The different beliefs and values found in this sample, and their possible associations are discussed. CONCLUSION: Despite high levels of stress, the women were psychologically adjusted at the time of making the decision to terminate the pregnancy. However, opposing what has been previously reported, the women presented high levels of sadness and fear, showing that this decision was hard to make, triggering disruptive emotions.

-------------------------------- ABSTRACT: Provision of timely, effective, evidence based mental health services to children and adolescents can prevent long term impairment, but they are critically underfunded across the globe. There is an imperative to ensure this precious resource is not wasted. Governments and other relevant mental health stakeholders need to know the mental health status of the population, what resources are available and how best to use the resources available to guide effective policy and decisions about service levels. Aim: The aim of this paper is to explore the role of acuity, severity and complexity in determining the specialist mental health care that children and adolescents experiencing mental disorders receive. Methods: This study is exploratory involving a systematic scan of the literature. A key word search was conducted using databases PSYCHINFO, EMBASE, PUBMED and MEDLINE. Grey literature was also searched to focus on systemic, organisational and policy approaches to the organisation and commissioning of CAMHS. Only documents written in English were selected. Three countries Belgium, UK and the US all with very different models of service organisation for CAMHS were reviewed to investigate how well the concepts of acuity, severity and complexity were used to determine the level of care delivered in their service design. Findings: Neither the Belgium nor the US model of CAMHS service organisation appear to align with the key concepts driving intensity of level of service provision. The UK CAMHS service system most closely aligns with the concepts. It has a more balanced resource allocation between hospital and community. Its downfall is in its lack of flexibility between service levels and its lack of support for the primary care sector. Conclusions: The variability in resource allocation to different service levels (inpatient, outpatient, community) within specialist CAMHS and the differing model of service structure across countries indicates an inconsistency in how children and adolescents presenting to CAMHS are allocated to the care they receive. This puts into question whether children and adolescent with mental disorders are receiving a level and type of care commensurate with their needs. In commissioning and designing CAMHS systems a number of key principles that should be considered are discussed. The perfect system however, is yet to be found.

Business Intelligence (BI) can be seen as a method that gathers information and data from information systems in order to help companies to be more accurate in their decision-making process. Traditionally BI systems were associated with the use of Data Warehouses (DW). The prime purpose of DW is to serve as a repository that stores all the relevant information required for making the correct decision. The necessity to integrate streaming data became crucial with the need to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the decision process. In primary and secondary education, there is a lack of BI solutions. Due to the schools reality the main purpose of this study is to provide a Pervasive BI solution able to monitoring the schools and student data anywhere and anytime in real-time as well as disseminating the information through ubiquitous devices. The first task consisted in gathering data regarding the different choices made by the student since his enrolment in a certain school year until the end of it. Thereafter a dimensional model was developed in order to be possible building a BI platform. This paper presents the dimensional model, a set of pre-defined indicators, the Pervasive Business Intelligence characteristics and the prototype designed. The main contribution of this study was to offer to the schools a tool that could help them to make accurate decisions in real-time. Data dissemination was achieved through a localized application that can be accessed anywhere and anytime.

Hepatitis C is a rapidly developing area of medicine – diagnostic tools are ever more refined, and entirely new treatments and treatment strategies are arriving, with more on the horizon. And because the virus affects such a large and varying population – up to 170 million at last count – we think it is important to have a pocket reference especially devoted to hepatitis C. We look forward to your comments on the usefulness of our 2014 Short Guide to Hepatitis C, which is an expansion and update of the HCV chapters in Hepatology – A Clinical Textbook (2014), also published by Flying Publisher. As always, we invite qualified people everywhere to translate this book into other languages, and make them available widely. This web-based free-of- harge concept is made possible by unrestricted educational grants from the pharmaceutical industry and has allowed the material to reach countries usually not covered by print media. We are convinced that this new pocket guide concept, focusing here on hepatitis C, will become a valuable source of information for our readers.
