The revival of terracotta and faience in British architecture was widespread, dramatic in its results and, for two decades, the subject of intense debate. However the materials have been frequently denigrated and more generally disregarded by both architects and historians. This study sets out to record and explain the rise and fall of interest in terracotta and faience, the extent and nature of the industry and the range of architectural usage in the Victorian, Edwardian and inter-war periods. The first two chapters record the faltering use of terracotta as an 'artificial stone', until the material gained its own identity, largely through the appreciation of Italian architecture. In the mid-Victorian period, terracotta will be seen to have become symbolic of the philosophy of the Victoria and Albert Museum and its Art School in attempting to reform both architecture and the decorative arts. The adoption of terracotta was furthered as much by industrial as aesthetic factors; three chapters examine how the exploitation of coal-measure clays, developments in the processes of manufacture, the changing motivation of industrialists and differing economics of production served to promote and then to hinder expansion and adaptation. The practical values of economy, durability and fire-resistance and the aesthetic potential, seen in terms of colour and decorative and sculptural modelling, became inter-related in the work of the architects who made extensive use of architectural ceramics. A correlation emerges between the free Gothic style, exemplified by the designs of Alfred Waterhouse and the use of red terracotta supplied from Ruabon, and between the eclectic Renaissance style and a buff material produced by different manufacturers. These patterns were modified as a result of the adoption of faience for facing external walls as well as interiors, and because of the new architectural requirements and tastes of the twentieth century. The general timidity in exploiting the scope for polychromatic decoration and the increasing opposition to architectural ceramics is contrasted with the most successful schemes produced for cinemas, chain-stores and factories. In the last chapter, those undertaken by the Hathern Station Brick and Terracotta Company between 1896 and 1939 are used as a case study; they confirm that manufacturers, architects and clients were all committed to creating a modern and yet decorative architecture, appropriate for new building types and that would appeal to and be comprehensible to the public.

Designing turbines for either aerospace or power production is a daunting task for any heat transfer scientist or engineer. Turbine designers are continuously pursuing better ways to convert the stored chemical energy in the fuel into useful work with maximum efficiency. Based on thermodynamic principles, one way to improve thermal efficiency is to increase the turbine inlet pressure and temperature. Generally, the inlet temperature may exceed the capabilities of standard materials for safe and long-life operation of the turbine. Next generation propulsion systems, whether for new supersonic transport or for improving existing aviation transport, will require more aggressive cooling system for many hot-gas-path components of the turbine. Heat pipe technology offers a possible cooling technique for the structures exposed to the high heat fluxes. Hence, the objective of this dissertation is to develop new radially rotating heat pipe systems that integrate multiple rotating miniature heat pipes with a common reservoir for a more effective and practical solution to turbine or compressor cooling. In this dissertation, two radially rotating miniature heat pipes and two sector heat pipes are analyzed and studied by utilizing suitable fluid flow and heat transfer modeling along with experimental tests. Analytical solutions for the film thickness and the lengthwise vapor temperature distribution for a single heat pipe are derived. Experimental tests on single radially rotating miniature heat pipes and sector heat pipes are undertaken with different important parameters and the manner in which these parameters affect heat pipe operation. Analytical and experimental studies have proven that the radially rotating miniature heat pipes have an incredibly high effective thermal conductance and an enormous heat transfer capability. Concurrently, the heat pipe has an uncomplicated structure and relatively low manufacturing costs. The heat pipe can also resist strong vibrations and is well suited for a high temperature environment. Hence, the heat pipes with a common reservoir make incorporation of heat pipes into turbo-machinery much more feasible and cost effective.

Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa cooccur along many intertidal floodplains in the Neotropics. Their patterns of dominance shift along various gradients, coincident with salinity, soil fertility, and tidal flooding. We used leaf gas exchange metrics to investigate the strategies of these two species in mixed culture to simulate competition under different salinity concentrations and hydroperiods. Semidiurnal tidal and permanent flooding hydroperiods at two constant salinity regimes (10 g L−1 and 40 g L−1) were simulated over 10 months. Assimilation ( ), stomatal conductance ( ), intercellular CO2 concentration ( ), instantaneous photosynthetic water use efficiency (PWUE), and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) were determined at the leaf level for both species over two time periods. Rhizophora mangle had significantly higher PWUE than did L. racemosa seedlings at low salinities; however, L. racemosa had higher PNUE and and, accordingly, had greater intercellular CO2 (calculated) during measurements. Both species maintained similar capacities for A at 10 and 40 g L−1 salinity and during both permanent and tidal hydroperiod treatments. Hydroperiod alone had no detectable effect on leaf gas exchange. However, PWUE increased and PNUE decreased for both species at 40 g L−1 salinity compared to 10 g L−1. At 40 g L−1 salinity, PNUE was higher for L. racemosa than R. mangle with tidal flooding. These treatments indicated that salinity influences gas exchange efficiency, might affect how gases are apportioned intercellularly, and accentuates different strategies for distributing leaf nitrogen to photosynthesis for these two species while growing competitively.

A pressurized core with CH4 hydrate or dissolved CH4 should evolve gas volumes in a predictable manner as pressure is released over time at isothermal conditions. Incremental gas volumes were collected as pressure was released over time from 29 pressure core sampler (PCS) cores from Sites 994, 995, 996, and 997 on the Blake Ridge. Most of these cores were kept at or near 0ºC with an ice bath, and many of these cores yielded substantial quantities of CH4. Volume-pressure plots were constructed for 20 of these cores. Only five plots conform to expected volume and pressure changes for sediment cores with CH4 hydrate under initial pressure and temperature conditions. However, other evidence suggests that sediment in these five and at least five other PCS cores contained CH4 hydrate before core recovery and gas release. Detection of CH4 hydrate in a pressurized sediment core through volume-pressure relationships is complicated by two factors. First, significant quantities of CH4-poor borehole water fill the PCS and come into contact with the core. This leads to dilution of CH4 concentration in interstitial water and, in many cases, decomposition of CH4 hydrate before a degassing experiment begins. Second, degassing experiments were conducted after the PCS had equilibrated in an ice-water bath (0ºC). This temperature is significantly lower than in situ values in the sediment formation before core recovery. Our results and interpretations for PCS cores collected on Leg 164 imply that pressurized containers formerly used by the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and currently used by ODP are not appropriately designed for direct detection of gas hydrate in sediment at in situ conditions through volume-pressure relationships.

The sediment temperature distribution at mud volcanoes provides insights into their activity and into the occurrence of gas hydrates. If ambient pressure and temperature conditions are close to the limits of the gas hydrate stability field, the sediment temperature distribution not only limits the occurrence of gas hydrates, but is itself influenced by heat production and consumption related to the formation and dissociation of gas hydrates. Located in the Sorokin Trough in the northern Black Sea, the Dvurechenskii mud volcano (DMV) was in the focus of detailed investigations during the M72/2 and M73/3a cruises of the German R/V Meteor and the ROV Quest 4000 m in February and March 2007. A large number of in-situ sediment temperature measurements were conducted from the ROV and with a sensor-equipped gravity corer. Gas hydrates were sampled in pressurized cores using a dynamic autoclave piston corer (DAPC). The thermal structure of the DMV suggests a regime of fluid flow at rates decreasing from the summit towards the edges of the mud volcano, accompanied by intermittent mud expulsion at the summit. Modeled gas hydrate dissociation temperatures reveal that the gas hydrates at the DMV are very close to the stability limits. Changes in heat flow due to variable seepage rates probably do not result in changes in sediment temperature but are compensated by gas hydrate dissociation and formation.

Most liquid electrolytes used in commercial lithium-ion batteries are composed by alkylcarbonate mixture containing lithium salt. The decomposition of these solvents by oxidation or reduction during cycling of the cell, induce generation of gases (CO2, CH4, C2H4, CO …) increasing of pressure in the sealed cell, which causes a safety problem [1]. The prior understanding of parameters, such as structure and nature of salt, temperature pressure, concentration, salting effects and solvation parameters, which influence gas solubility and vapor pressure of electrolytes is required to formulate safer and suitable electrolytes especially at high temperature.

We present in this work the CO2, CH4, C2H4, CO solubility in different pure alkyl-carbonate solvents (PC, DMC, EMC, DEC) and their binary or ternary mixtures as well as the effect of temperature and lithium salt LiX (X = LiPF6, LiTFSI or LiFAP) structure and concentration on these properties. Furthermore, in order to understand parameters that influence the choice of the structure of the solvents and their ability to dissolve gas through the addition of a salt, we firstly analyzed experimentally the transport properties (Self diffusion coefficient (D), fluidity (h-1), and conductivity (s) and lithium transport number (tLi) using the Stock-Einstein, and extended Jones-Dole equations [2]. Furthermore, measured data for the of CO2, C2H4, CH4 and CO solubility in pure alkylcarbonates and their mixtures containing LiPF6; LiFAP; LiTFSI salt, are reported as a function of temperature and concentration in salt. Based on experimental solubility data, the Henry’s law constant of gases in these solvents and electrolytes was then deduced and compared with values predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software. From these results, the molar thermodynamic functions of dissolution such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvents and electrolytes with the gases in its hypothetical liquid state were calculated and discussed [3]. Finally, the analysis of the CO2 solubility variations with the salt addition was then evaluated by determining specific ion parameters Hi by using the Setchenov coefficients in solution. This study showed that the gas solubility is entropy driven and can been influenced by the shape, charge density, and size of the anions in lithium salt.
