Closed-form design equations for the operation of a class-E amplifier for zero switch voltage slope and arbitrary duty cycle are derived. This approach allows an additional degree of freedom in the design of class-E amplifiers which are normally designed for 50 duty ratio. The analysis developed permits the selection of non-unique solutions where amplifier efficiency is theoretically 100 but power output capability is less than that the 50 duty ratio case would permit. To facilitate comparison between 50 (optimal) and non-50 (suboptimal) duty ratio cases, each important amplifier parameter is normalised to its corresponding optimum operation value. It is shown that by choosing a non-50 suboptimal solution, the operating frequency of a class-E amplifier can be extended. In addition, it is shown that by operating the amplifier in the suboptimal regime, other amplifier parameters, for example, transistor output capacitance or peak switch voltage, can be included along with the standard specification criteria of output power, DC supply voltage and operating frequency as additional input design specifications. Suboptimum class-E operation may have potential advantages for monolithic microwave integrated circuit realisation as lower inductance values (lower series resistance, higher self-resonance frequency, less area) may be required when compared with the results obtained for optimal class-E amplifier synthesis. The theoretical analysis conducted here was verified by harmonic balance simulation, with excellent agreement between both methods. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2007.

In this paper, an analysis is performed in order to determine the effects that variations in circuit component values, frequency, and duty cycle have on the performance of the newly introduced inverse Class-E amplifier. Analysis of the inverse Class-E amplifier under the generalized condition of arbitrary duty cycle is performed and it is shown that the inverse Class-E amplifier is reasonably tolerant to circuit parameter variations. When compared to the conventional Class-E amplifier the inverse Class-E amplifier offers the potential for high efficiency at increased output power as well as higher peak output power levels than are available with a conventional Class-E amplifier. Further the inverse Class-E amplifier provides more flexibility for deployment with a pulsewidth modulator as the means of producing full-carrier amplitude modulation (AM) due to its ability to operate to high AM modulation indices.

A range of malts, as well as their high- and low-molecular-mass fractions, has been examined by capillary electrophoresis in phosphate buffer, pH 2.5, and in carbonate buffer, pH 9.5, and the results have been compared with those for roasted barley and for caramels. The malts fall into two categories: (i) the lightly roasted malts, where the high-molecular-mass coloured fraction is negatively charged at pH 9.5 and positively charged at pH 2.5; and (ii) the highly roasted malts (and the roasted barley), where the high-molecular-mass fraction migrates close to the electro-osmotic flow at both pH 9.5 and 2.5, implying that it carries little or no charge. The former category shows migration patterns similar to Class III caramels, whereas the latter migrates differently from Class I, III and IV caramels as well as from the former. Capillary electrophoresis therefore has considerable potential for differentiating between malts and between malts and caramels and roasted barley. (C) 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

An analysis of the operation of a series-L/parallel-tuned class-E amplifier and its equivalence to the classic shunt-C/series-tuned class-E amplifier are presented. The first reported closed form design equations for the series-L/parallel-tuned topology operating under ideal switching conditions are given. Furthermore, a design procedure is introduced that allows the effect that nonzero switch resistance has on amplifier performance efficiency to be accounted for. The technique developed allows optimal circuit components to be found for a given device series resistance. For a relatively high value of switching device ON series resistance of 4O, drain efficiency of around 66% for the series-L/parallel-tuned topology, and 73% for the shunt-C/series-tuned topology appear to be the theoretical limits. At lower switching device series resistance levels, the efficiency performance of each type are similar, but the series-L/parallel-tuned topology offers some advantages in terms of its potential for MMIC realisation. Theoretical analysis is confirmed by numerical simulation for a 500mW (27dBm), 10% bandwidth, 5 V series-L/parallel-tuned, then, shunt-C/series-tuned class E power amplifier, operating at 2.5 GHz, and excellent agreement between theory and simulation results is achieved. The theoretical work presented in the paper should facilitate the design of high-efficiency switched amplifiers at frequencies commensurate with the needs of modern mobile wireless applications in the microwave frequency range, where intrinsically low-output-capacitance MMIC switching devices such as pHEMTs are to be used.

Microscopic simulation models are often evaluated based on visual inspection of the results. This paper presents formal econometric techniques to compare microscopic simulation (MS) models with real-life data. A related result is a methodology to compare different MS models with each other. For this purpose, possible parameters of interest, such as mean returns, or autocorrelation patterns, are classified and characterized. For each class of characteristics, the appropriate techniques are presented. We illustrate the methodology by comparing the MS model developed by He and Li [J. Econ. Dynam. Control, 2007, 31, 3396-3426, Quant. Finance, 2008, 8, 59-79] with actual data.

Kinestatin, isolated from the skin of the Chinese toad, Bombina maxima, was the first bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist identified in amphibians. Molecular cloning established that it is co-encoded with the bradykinin-related peptide, maximakinin, within one of several skin kininogens. To examine other species within the genus Bombina for the presence of structural homologues of kinestatin, we subjected skin secretion of the toad, Bombina orientalis, to HPLC fractionation with subsequent bioassay of fractions for antagonism of bradykinin activity using an isolated rat tail artery smooth muscle preparation. A single fraction was located that inhibited bradykinin-induced relaxation of rat arterial smooth muscle and MALDI-TOF analysis of this fraction revealed that it contained a single peptide of molecular mass 3198.5 Da. Further primary structural analysis of this peptide showed that it was a 28-mer with an N-terminal Asp (D) residue and a C-terminal Val (V) residue that was amidated. The peptide was named DV-28 amide in accordance with these primary structural attributes. Synthetic DV-28 amide replicated the observed bradykinin antagonistic effect within the smooth muscle bioassay in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, it was observed to inhibit the proliferation of human microvessel endothelial cells (HMECs) as assessed by MTT assay. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that DV-28 amide was, like kinestatin, co-encoded with a bradykinin receptor agonist on one of two skin kininogens identified in B. orientalis. DV-28 amide thus represents a novel class of bradykinin antagonist from skin secretions of bombinid toads that appear to be a rich source of such novel peptides.

A recently introduced power-combining scheme for a Class-E amplifier is, for the first time, experimentally validated in this paper. A small value choke of 2.2 nH was used to substitute for the massive dc-feed inductance required in the classic Class-E circuit. The power-combining amplifier presented, which operates from a 3.2-V dc supply voltage, is shown to be able to deliver a 24-dBm output power and a 9.5-dB gain, with 64% drain efficiency and 57% power-added efficiency at 2.4 GHz. The power amplifier exhibits a 350-MHz bandwidth within which a drain efficiency that is better than 60% and an output power that is higher than 22 dBm were measured. In addition, by adopting three-harmonic termination strategy, excellent second-and third-harmonic suppression levels of 50 and 46 dBc, respectively, were obtained. The complete design cycle from analysis through fabrication to characterization is explained. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new technique for palmprint recognition based on Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA) and Gabor filter bank. This method involves convolving a palmprint image with a bank of Gabor filters at different scales and rotations for robust palmprint features extraction. Once these features are extracted, FLDA is applied for dimensionality reduction and class separability. Since the palmprint features are derived from the principal lines, wrinkles and texture along the palm area. One should carefully consider this fact when selecting the appropriate palm region for the feature extraction process in order to enhance recognition accuracy. To address this problem, an improved region of interest (ROI) extraction algorithm is introduced. This algorithm allows for an efficient extraction of the whole palm area by ignoring all the undesirable parts, such as the fingers and background. Experiments have shown that the proposed method yields attractive performances as evidenced by an Equal Error Rate (EER) of 0.03%.

The biphenyl dioxygenase-catalyzed asymmetric mono-cis-dihydroxylation of the tetracyclic arenes chrysene 1A, benzo[c]phenanthridine 1B, and benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene 1C, has been observed to occur exclusively at the bay or pseudo-bay region using the bacterium Sphingomonas yanoikuyae B8/36. The mono-cis-dihydrodiol derivatives 2A and 2C, obtained from chrysene 1A by oxidation at the 3,4-bond (2A) and benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene 1C by oxidation at the 1,2-bond (2C), respectively, have been observed to undergo a further dioxygenase-catalyzed asymmetric cis-dihydroxylation at a second bay or pseudo-bay region bond to yield the corresponding bis-cis-dihydrodiols (cis-tetraols) 4A and 4C, the first members of a new class of microbial metabolites in the polycyclic arene series. The enantiopurities and absolute configurations of the new mono-cis-dihydrodiols 2B, 2C, and 3B were determined by H-1 NMR analyses of the corresponding (R)- and (S)-2-(1-methoxyethyl)benzeneboronate (MPBA) ester derivatives. The structure and absolute configurations of the bis-cis-dihydrodiols 4A and 4C were unambiguously determined by spectral analyses, stereochemical correlations, and, for the metabolite 4C, X-ray crystallographic analysis of the bis-acetonide derivative 7C. These results illustrate the marked preference of biphenyl dioxygenase for the cis-di- and tetra-hydroxylations of polycyclic arenes, at the more hindered bay or pseudo-bay regions, by exclusive addition from the same (si:si) face, to yield single enantiomers containing two and four chiral centers.

Aims. We use high spatial and temporal resolution observations from the Swedish Solar Telescope to study the chromospheric velocities of a C-class flare originating from active region NOAA 10969.
Methods. A time-distance analysis is employed to estimate directional velocity components in Hα and Ca ii K image sequences. Also, imaging spectroscopy has allowed us to determine flare-induced line-of-sight velocities. A wavelet analysis is used to analyse the periodic nature of associated flare bursts.
Results. Time-distance analysis reveals velocities as high as 64 km s-1 along the flare ribbon and 15 km s-1 perpendicular to it. The velocities are very similar in both the Hα and Ca ii K time series. Line-of-sight Hα velocities are red-shifted with values up to 17 km s-1. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the observations have allowed us to detect velocities significantly higher than those found in earlier studies. Flare bursts with a periodicity of ≈60 s are also detected. These bursts are similar to the quasi-periodic oscillations observed at hard X-ray and radio wavelength data.
Conclusions. Some of the highest velocities detected in the solar atmosphere are presented. Line-of-sight velocity maps show considerable mixing of both the magnitude and direction of velocities along the flare path. A change in direction of the velocities at the flare kernel has also been detected which may be a signature of chromospheric evaporation.

This article addresses the relative absence of class-based analysis in theatre and performance studies, and suggests the reconfiguration of class as performance rather than as it is traditionally conceived as an identity predicated solely on economic stratification. It engages with the occlusion of class by the ascendancy of identity politics based on race, gender and sexuality and its attendant theoretical counterparts in deconstruction and post-structuralism, which became axiomatic as they displaced earlier methodologies to become hegemonic in the arts and humanities. The article proceeds to an assessment of the development of sociological approaches to theatre, particularly the legacy of Raymond Williams and Pierre Bourdieu. The argument concludes with the application of an approach which reconfigures class as performance to the production of Declan Hughes's play Shiver of 2003, which dramatizes the consequences of the dot.com bubble of the late 1990s for ambitious members of the Irish middle class.

More fathers than ever before attend at the birth of their child and, internationally, there is a palpable pressure on maternity and neonatal services to include and engage with fathers. It is, thus, more important than ever to understand how fathers experience reproductive and neonatal health services and to understand how fathers can be successfully accommodated in these environments alongside their partners. In this paper we advance a theoretical framework for re-thinking fatherhood and health services approaches to fatherhood based on Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities (CSM). We illustrate the importance of this feminist-informed theoretical approach to understanding the gendered experiences of fathers in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) setting. Using a longitudinal follow-up research design, with two data collection points, a total of 39 in-depth semi-structured interviews was conducted with 21 fathers of infants admitted to NICU between August 2008 and December 2009. The findings demonstrate: (i) ways in which men are forging new gendered identities around the birth of their baby but, over time, acknowledge women as the primary caregivers; (ii) how social class is a key determinant of men’s ability to enact hegemonic forms of ‘involved fatherhood’ in the NICU, and; (iii) how men also encounter resistance from their partners and health professionals in challenging a gender order which associates women with the competent care of infants. An understanding of these gendered experiences operating at both individual and structural levels is critical to leading change for the inclusion of fathers as equal parents in healthcare settings. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We present an investigation of coupled nonlinear electromagnetic modes in an electron-positron plasma by using the well established technique of Poincaré surface of section plots. A variety of nonlinear solutions corresponding to interesting coupled electrostatic-electromagnetic modes sustainable in electron-positron plasmas is shown on the Poincaré section. A special class of localized solitary wave solution is identified along a separatrix curve and its importance in the context of electromagnetic wave propagation in an electron-positron plasma is discussed.

The capacity to provide satisfactory nursing care is being increasingly compromised by current trajectories of healthcare funding and governance. The purpose of this paper is to examine how well Marxist theories of the state and its relationship with capital can explain these trajectories in this period of ever-increasing austerity. Following a brief history of the current crisis, it examines empirically the effects of the crisis, and of the current trajectory of capitalism in general, upon the funding and organization of the UK and US healthcare systems. The deleterious effect of growing income inequalities to the health of the population are also addressed. Marx’s writings on the state and its relation to the capitalist class were fragmentary, and historically and geographically specific. From them, we can extract three theoretical variants: the instrumentalist theory of the state, where the state has no autonomy from capital; the abdication theory, whereby capital abstains from direct political power and relies on the state to serve its interests; and the class-balance theory of the state, whereby the struggle between two opposed classes allows the state to assert itself. Discussion of modern Marxist interpretations include Poulantzas’s structuralist abdication theory and Miliband’s instrumentalist theory. It is concluded that, despite the pluralism of electoral democracies, the bourgeoisie do have an overweening influence upon the state. The bourgeoisie’s ownership of the means of production provides the foundation for its influence because the state is obliged to rely on it to manage the supply of goods and services and the creation of wealth. That power is further reinforced by the infiltration of the bourgeoisie into the organs of state. The level of influence has accelerated rapidly over recent decades. One of the consequences of this has been that healthcare systems have become rich pickings for the evermore confident bourgeoisie.

Power back-off performances of a new variant power-combining Class-E amplifier under different amplitude-modulation schemes such as continuous wave (CW), envelope elimination and restoration (EER), envelope tracking (ET) and outphasing are for the first time investigated in this study. Finite DC-feed inductances rather than massive RF chokes as used in the classic single-ended Class-E power amplifier (PA) resulted from the approximate yet effective frequency-domain circuit analysis provide the wherewithal to increase modulation bandwidth up to 80% higher than the classic single-ended Class-E PA. This increased modulation bandwidth is required for the linearity improvement in the EER/ET transmitters. The modified output load network of the power-combining Class-E amplifier adopting three-harmonic terminations technique relaxes the design specifications for the additional filtering block typically required at the output stage of the transmitter chain. Qualitative agreements between simulation and measurement results for all four schemes were achieved where the ET technique was proven superior to the other schemes. When the PA is used within the ET scheme, an increase of average drain efficiency of as high as 40% with respect to the CW excitation was obtained for a multi-carrier input signal with 12 dB peak-to-average power ratio. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
