Extrasolar planets abound in almost any possible configuration. However, until five years ago, there was a lack of planets orbiting closer than 0.5 au to giant or subgiant stars. Since then, recent detections have started to populated this regime by confirming 13 planetary systems. We discuss the properties of these systems in terms of their formation and evolution off the main sequence. Interestingly, we find that 70.0 ± 6.6% of the planets in this regime are inner components of multiplanetary systems. This value is 4.2σ higher than for main-sequence hosts, which we find to be 42.4 ± 0.1%. The properties of the known planets seem to indicate that the closest-in planets (a< 0.06 au) to main-sequence stars are massive (i.e., hot Jupiters) and isolated and that they are subsequently engulfed by their host as it evolves to the red giant branch, leaving only the predominant population of multiplanetary systems in orbits 0.06 of this emerging observational trend in the context of formation and evolution of hot Jupiters.

Introduction: Acute pancreatitis is often a relapsing condition, particularly when its triggering factor persists. Our goal is to determine the recurrence rate of acute biliary pancreatitis after an initial episode, and the time to relapse, as well as to identify the risk factors for recurrence. Material and method: We included all patients admitted for a first acute gallstone pancreatitis event during four years. Primary endpoints included readmission for recurrence and time to relapse. Results: We included 296 patients admitted on a total of 386 occasions. The incidence of acute biliary pancreatitis in our setting is 17.5/100,000 population/year. In all, 19.6% of pancreatitis were severe (22.6% of severe acute pancreatitis for first episodes versus 3.6% for recurring pancreatitis), with an overall mortality of 4.4%. Overall recurrence rate was 15.5%, with a median time to relapse of 82 days. In total, 14.2% of patients relapsed after an acute pancreatitis event without cholecystectomy or endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography. Severe acute pancreatitis recur in 7.2% of patients, whereas mild cases do so in 16.3%, this being the only risk factor for recurrence thus far identified. Conclusions: Patients admitted for pancreatitis should undergo cholecystectomy as soon as possible or be guaranteed priority on the waiting list. Otherwise, endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography with sphincterotomy may be an alternative to surgery for selected patients.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing debate on governance, accountability, transparency and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the mining sector of a developing country context. It examines the reporting practices of the two largest transnational gold-mining companies in Tanzania in order to draw attention to the role played by local government regulations and advocacy and campaigning by nationally organised non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with respect to promoting corporate social reporting practices. Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes a political economy perspective to consider the serious implications of the neo-liberal ideologies of the global capitalist economy, as manifested in Tanzania’s regulatory framework and in NGO activism, for the corporate disclosure, accountability and responsibility of transnational companies (TNCs). A qualitative field case study methodology is adopted to locate the largely unfamiliar issues of CSR in the Tanzanian mining sector within a more familiar literature on social accounting. Data for the case study were obtained from interviews and from analysis of documents such as annual reports, social responsibility reports, newspapers, NGO reports and other publicly available documents. Findings – Analysis of interviews, press clips and NGO reports draws attention to social and environmental problems in the Tanzanian mining sector, which are arguably linked to the manifestation of the broader crisis of neo-liberal agendas. While these issues have serious impacts on local populations in the mining areas, they often remain invisible in mining companies’ social disclosures. Increasing evidence of social and environmental ills raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the regulatory frameworks, as well as the roles played by NGOs and other pressure groups in Tanzania. Practical implications – By empowering local NGOs through educational, capacity building, technological and other support, NGOs’ advocacy, campaigning and networking with other civil society groups can play a pivotal role in encouraging corporations, especially TNCs, to adopt more socially and environmentally responsible business practices and to adhere to international and local standards, which in turn may help to improve the lives of many poor people living in developing countries in general, and Tanzania in particular. Originality/value – This paper contributes insights from gold-mining activities in Tanzania to the existing literature on CSR in the mining sector. It also contributes to political economy theory by locating CSR reporting within the socio-political and regulatory context in which mining operations take place in Tanzania. It is argued that, for CSR reporting to be effective, robust regulations and enforcement and stronger political pressure must be put in place.

Intra-specific Y-chromosomal sequence variation is useful for analysing the male contribution to a species’ spatial genetic structure. In red deer (Cervus elaphus) this is especially relevant, because geographic dispersal and game translocations occur mainly through the males. However, Y-chromosomal markers for wild organisms are scarce and frequently non-polymorphic within species. We assessed the intra-specific variation of two Y-chromosomal introns in red deer, one in the DBY (or DDX3Y) gene and the other in the UBE1Y gene. The introns were amplified using previously published exonic primers and directly sequenced in individuals of five red deer subspecies from across Eurasia. However, no nucleotide polymorphism was observed, which rebuts the usefulness of these introns for studies of red deer phylogeography and on illegal transport of red deer within this region. Male-based phylogeographic studies should thus be focused on other Y-chromosomal markers for this species.

Résumé Si l'impact de l'informatique ne fait généralement pas de doute, il est souvent plus problématique d'en mesurer sa valeur. Les Directeurs des Systèmes d'Information (DSI) expliquent l'absence de schéma directeur et de vision à moyen et long terme de l'entreprise, par un manque de temps et de ressources mais aussi par un défaut d'implication des directions générales et des directions financières. L'incapacité de mesurer précisément la valeur du système d'information engendre une logique de gestion par les coûts, néfaste à l'action de la DSI. Alors qu'une mesure de la valeur économique de l'informatique offrirait aux directions générales la matière leur permettant d'évaluer réellement la maturité et la contribution de leur système d'information. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'évaluer à la fois l'alignement de l'informatique avec la stratégie de l'entreprise, la qualité du pilotage (mesure de performance) des systèmes d'information, et enfin, l'organisation et le positionnement de la fonction informatique dans l'entreprise. La mesure de ces trois éléments clés de la gouvernance informatique a été réalisée par l'intermédiaire de deux vagues d'enquêtes successives menées en 2000/2001 (DSI) et 2002/2003 (DSI et DG) en Europe francophone (Suisse Romande, France, Belgique et Luxembourg). Abstract The impact of Information Technology (IT) is today a clear evidence to company stakeholders. However, measuring the value generated by IT is a real challenge. Chief Information Officers (CIO) explain the absence of solid IT Business Plans and clear mid/long term visions by a lack of time and resources but also by a lack of involvement of business senior management (e.g. CEO and CFO). Thus, being not able to measure the economic value of IT, the CIO will have to face the hard reality of permanent cost pressures and cost reductions to justify IT spending and investments. On the other side, being able to measure the value of IT would help CIO and senior business management to assess the maturity and the contribution of the Information System and therefore facilitate the decision making process. The objective of this thesis is to assess the alignment of IT with the business strategy, to assess the quality of measurement of the Information System and last but not least to assess the positioning of the IT organisation within the company. The assessment of these three key elements of the IT Governance was established with two surveys (first wave in 2000/2001 for CIO, second wave in 2002/2003 for CIO and CEO) in Europe (French speaking countries namely Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg).

Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women nationally as well as in the state of Iowa, while stroke is the third leading cause of death. These two diseases are often grouped together under the broader term ―cardiovascular disease‖ (CVD), which accounts for one-third of all deaths within the state. Ongoing efforts to increase prevention of, and improve care for, those who experience CVD have resulted in a decline in the number of deaths in Iowa caused by these conditions. In 1991, the death rate as a result of cardiovascular disease was 344.9 per 100,000 people; by 2006, that number had fallen to 239.9. Deaths as a result of stroke have also dropped, from 74.7 in 1991 to 57.4 in 2006.1 Although progress has been made; these illnesses are still major causes of death and serious disability for many Iowans. Despite the fact that some progress has been made through past efforts, current data show that the journey must continue to achieve the long, quality filled lives that Iowans deserve, free of chronic disease. Up to this point, there has been a lack of involvement by stakeholders against heart disease and stroke in Iowa. Causes of CVD are largely known and preventable, and more must be done to educate and spread this information throughout the state. This comprehensive statewide plan is a call to action to improve prevention, treatment, and management of heart disease and stroke in Iowa. Through the commitment and collaborative efforts of many, the Iowa Comprehensive Heart Disease and Stroke Plan 2010-2014 provides a guide to improve the health status of all Iowans. The people of Iowa have a long history of working together to do the right thing. We must rise to the challenge of lowering the incidence of heart disease and stroke through early and ongoing education that stresses prevention and healthy lifestyle choices, medical services that provide evidence-based, effective treatment and long term care management without disparity, and environmental policies that support the prevention of heart disease and stroke in our schools, work sites, and communities. This strategic plan is a guide to improving cardiovascular health in Iowa through 2014.

Este estudo buscou identificar e analisar como foi planejado e executado o processo de descentralização da perícia criminal federal, bem assim, identificar a razão para os desvios havidos entre o planejamento e a implementação e as consequências advindas. Uma revisão da teoria precedeu a análise dos dados, obtidos através de pesquisa de campo constituída por oito entrevistas, sendo cinco entre os planejadores e executores do processo de descentralização, e três com os responsáveis por unidades descentralizadas. O planejamento do processo de descentralização foi realizado por equipes intermediárias do escalão dirigente do Departamento de Polícia Federal. Conforme levantamento empreendido por esses idealizadores, constatou-se uma alta demanda por assistência pericial em investigações conduzidas em cidades afastadas das capitais dos estados, onde residia o único centro forense disponível em cada unidade da federação. A distância do local da demanda para as capitais e a limitada capacidade de atendimento das unidades estaduais prevenia o atendimento tempestivo das requisições, situação que, por vezes, comprometia toda a eficácia da investigação policial. A par dessas constatações e tendo sido identificadas as principais especialidades requeridas, o volume de solicitações, a infraestrutura local disponível e outras características associadas à demanda e aos seus locais de origem, foram delimitados requisitos para a identificação de cidades que receberiam unidades técnico-científicas e delimitação das características dessas unidades. Os parâmetros fixados para dimensionar as unidades descentralizadas, como requisitos de infraestrutura, recursos humanos e equipamentos, acabaram por ser flexibilizados durante o processo de implementação devido à insuficiência de recursos financeiros para a implementação concebida. Como resultado, houve instalação de unidades incompletas; com corpo técnico carente das expertises requeridas; com infraestrutura física inadequada; em localidades não previstas; sem os laboratórios e equipamentos necessários. Os empecilhos indicados sinalizam que o plano foi estabelecido sem a análise precisa das forças e fraquezas, oportunidades e desafios que impactariam a sua execução. A ausência do envolvimento da alta administração da Polícia Federal pode explicar parte das deficiências encontradas no processo. Embora a descentralização tenha melhorado as condições para a atuação das equipes de investigação, diversas deficiências ainda precisam ser suprimidas para garantir melhor efetividade da assistência da perícia. Conclui-se pela necessidade de uma completa revisão do processo de descentralização da estrutura pericial, a fim de se identificar os ajustes necessários para o aprimoramento das condições de operação das unidades técnico-científicas descentralizadas.

The changes that have taken place in the organizational environment in recent decades have led to new performance measurement systems being proposed, given the inadequacy of traditional models. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) emerged as an instrument to translate financial and non-financial assets into real values for all interested parties in the organization, allowing the introduction of strategies to achieve the desired goals. Research shows that most errors committed with the use of this method are related to the implementation process. Thus, the aim of this dissertation is to analyze the process of building and implementing the BSC in an organization. This empirical exploratory study is based on the classic case study method, which enables the researcher to work with a set of evidence, including direct observation, interviews and document analysis. The results show that the use of BSC in the company investigated posed problems during the process of building and implementing the method. These problems were caused mainly by the lack of involvement on the part of upper management and the team s scant knowledge of Balanced Scorecard. One of the gains obtained from adopting the system was the introduction and/or consolidation of a culture of strategic planning and participative management. The continuous implementation phase was highlighted in the monitoring program, created by the organization in an attempt to reverse existing problems, using the BSC as a third generation strategic management system, which led to significant gains, better use of the system and stronger management practices

Cancer is a disease characterized by defects in growth control, and tumor cells often display abnormal patterns of cellular differentiation. The combination of recombinant human fibroblast interferon and the antileukemic agent mezerein corrects these abnormalities in cultured human melanoma cells resulting in irreversible growth arrest and terminal differentiation. Subtraction hybridization identifies a melanoma differentiation associated gene (mda-7) with elevated expression in growth arrested and terminally differentiated human melanoma cells. Colony formation decreases when mda-7 is transfected into human tumor cells of diverse origin and with multiple genetic defects. In contrast, the effects of mda-7 on growth and colony formation in transient transfection assays with normal cells, including human mammary epithelial, human skin fibroblast, and rat embryo fibroblast, is quantitatively less than that found with cancer cells. Tumor cells expressing elevated mda-7 display suppression in monolayer growth and anchorage independence. Infection with a recombinant type 5 adenovirus expressing antisense mda-7 eliminates mda-7 suppression of the in vitro growth and transformed phenotype. The ability of mda-7 to suppress growth in cancer cells not expressing or containing defects in both the retinoblastoma (RB) and p53 genes indicates a lack of involvement of these critical tumor suppressor elements in mediating mda-7-induced growth inhibition. The lack of protein homology of mda-7 with previously described growth suppressing genes and the differential effect of this gene on normal versus cancer cells suggests that mda-7 may represent a new class of cancer growth suppressing genes with antitumor activity.

Enquadramento: O sucesso/insucesso escolar é motivo de preocupação quer para a escola quer para as famílias. A entrada para a escola gera mudanças na criança pela adaptação a diferentes ambientes e contextos, pelos relacionamentos com os professores e colegas, pelos os hábitos e estilos de vida dos alunos. A família, quer em casa quer nas relações com a escola, exerce um papel fundamental no desempenho escolar dos filhos, pelo acompanhamento e envolvimento ativo que deve ter nos projetos educativos. Objetivos: Avaliar o desempenho (sucesso/insucesso) dos alunos do 6º ano; caracterizar o perfil sociodemográfico dos alunos e da família dos alunos; avaliar alguns hábitos de vida dos alunos; avaliar o envolvimento dos pais com os alunos e com a escola. Material e métodos: Estudo exploratório-descritivo, quantitativo e correlacional, com os pais e os alunos duma Escola pública, Maria Iraci Teófilo de Castro, Alagoas, no ano de 2015. A escola tem uma população de 1782 alunos de várias séries e a nossa amostra foram os alunos de 6º ano, num total de 325. Para a colheita de dados futilizamos um questionário de caraterização dos alunos, da familia e da escola e uma escala de envolvimento parental com a escola (QEPE-versão pais). Realizamos ainda 40 entrevistas com pais dos alunos do 6º ano. Resultados: A maioria são rapazes (56,6%) com uma média de idades de 11,96 anos (de 10-16 anos). Estão distribuídos por 8 turmas (de 30 a 47 alunos). Residem maioritariamente em zona rural (61,5%), vivem com os pais (59,1%) e cerca de 40% referem ter os pais solteiros ou separados. Os pais, 50,2% têm o ensino fundamental I e 37,2% não têm instrução. A deslocação para a escola é em média de 15 minutos. As crianças não têm habitos tabágicos ou alcoólicos e realizam atividades de ajuda ás famílias (74,5%). 41,2% de alunos referem ter sono nas aulas e 43,1% levantam-se antes das 6 horas. 33,5% dos alunos gostam pouco ou nada da escola. Quanto ao desempenho escolar 24,3% autoavaliam o seu desempenho como abaixo da média e 44,0% já reprovaram alguma vez. A falta de estudo (31,5%) e as faltas (35,7%) são os motivos mais apontados para as reprovações. Dos motivos para não estudar, 23,6% referem ser por causa de ajudar em atividades em casa. A quase totalidade refere ter bom ou muito bom relacionamento com os pais, mas cerca de 25 % referem que só às vezes os pais os ajudam nos problemas e no incentivo à leitura e a visita regular dos pais à escola é referida por 36,3%. Conclusões: Existem mais reprovações no sexo masculino, nos alunos em que os pais não ajudam na lição em casa e nem os incentivam à leitura e nos alunos que referem sono nas aulas. Os alunos que gostam da escola e se sentem motivados são os que menos reprovam. Verificamos fraco envolvimento dos pais na vida escolar dos filhos, não ajudam na realização das tarefas e incentivos ao estudo e não mantêm um contato regular com o professor e a escola. O estudo teve como objetivo geral submeter ao teste empírico as relações entre bem estar no trabalho e otimismo em estudantes trabalhadores. No estudo foi utilizada uma amostra escolhida por conveniência, sendo composta por 125 estudantes trabalhadores de ambos os sexos, divididos em dois grupos. O grupo 1, com 60 estudantes de uma universidade da cidade de São Bernardo do Campo; e, o grupo 2, com 65 jovens adolescentes de uma organização não governamental da cidade de São Paulo. O instrumento de coleta foi um questionário de auto-aplicação composto por itens versando sobre as variáveis da pesquisa e questões sobre dados pessoais e profissionais dos participantes do estudo. As análises estatísticas foram descritivas e multivariadas. Os resultados descritivos das três dimensões de BET indicam a maior presença de sentimentos de satisfação com chefias e colegas em ambos os grupos; menores níveis de satisfação de ambos os grupos ocorreram com os fatores salário e promoção; fracos vínculos afetivos do grupo 1 com o trabalho e com a organização; fraco envolvimento com o trabalho do grupo 2. Os dois grupos apresentaram níveis elevados de otimismo, o que significa afirmar que ambos tinham uma percepção de futuro promissor. Foi confirmada empiricamente a hipótese de que BET pudesse ter alguma associação com otimismo, através da presença de correlação entre otimismo e satisfação com colegas, bem como, com envolvimento com o trabalho para o grupo 1. Para o grupo 2, otimismo correlacionou-se com satisfação com tarefas e comprometimento organizacional afetivo. O presente estudo visou a contribuir para a compreensão de bem estar no trabalho e otimismo e suas relações no contexto profissional de estudantes trabalhadores para desta forma prover melhor fundamentação conceitual acerca do tema para estudiosos, bem como sugerir ações e práticas de gestão de pessoas que intensifiquem o bem estar e a promoção de saúde das pessoas quando inseridos no contexto organizacional de trabalho.

Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) of any country could be a source of providing professionals to the country in many fields. By doing so, HEIs could play a pivotal role in the economic growth of the country. In Pakistan, it seems that, in the wake of this realization, steps have been taken to reform Higher Education. Drawing on the Triple I model of educational change covering Initiation, Implementation and Institutionalization (Fullan, 2007) this study focuses on the planning and implementation of reforms in the Education system of Pakistan at higher education level that have been introduced by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) since its inception in 2002. Kennedy’s model of hierarchical subsystems affecting innovation and Chin and Benne’s (1985) description of strategies for implementing change also provided guidelines for analyzing the changes in education in the country to highlight the role that the authorities expect the language teacher to play in the process of implementing these changes. A qualitative method is followed in this study to gather data from English language teachers at three universities of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. A questionnaire was developed to look into the perceptions of English language teachers regarding the impact of these reforms. This was followed up by interviews. Responses from 28 teachers were received through questionnaire out of which 9 teachers were interviewed for detailed analysis of their perceptions. Thematic Content analysis was used to analyze and interpret the data. Some of the most significant changes that the respondents reported knowledge of included the introduction of Semester System, extending the Bachelors degree to four years from two years, promotion of research culture, and increased teachers’ autonomy in classroom practices. Implications of these reforms for English teachers’ professional development were also explored. The data indicate that the teachers generally have a positive attitude towards the changes. However, the data also show concerns that teachers have about the practical effectiveness of these changes in improving English language teaching and learning in Pakistani Universities. Some of the areas of concern are worries regarding resources, the assessment system, the number of qualified teachers, and instability in the educational policy. They are concerned about the training facilities and quality of the professional training available to them. Moreover, they report that training opportunities for their professional development are not available to all the teachers equally. Despite the HEC claims of providing regular training opportunities, the majority of the teachers did not receive any formal training in the last three years, while some teachers were able to access these opportunities multiple times. Through the recent reforms HEC has empowered the teachers in conducting the learning/teacher processes but this extra power has reduced their accountability and they can exercise these powers without any check on them. This empowerment is limited to the classroom and there appears to be no or minimal involvement in decision making at the top level of policy making. Such lack of involvement in the policy decisions seems to be generating a lack of sense of ownership among the teachers (Fullan 2003a:6). Although Quality Enhancement Cells have been developed in the universities to assure the desired quality of education, they might need a more active role to contribute in achieving the level of enhancement in education expected from them. Based on the perceptions of the respondents of this study and the review of the relevant literature, it is argued that it is unlikely for the reforms to be institutionalized if teachers are not given the right kind of awareness at the initiation stage and are not prepared at the implementation stage to cope with the challenge of a complex process. The teachers participating in this study, in general, have positive and enthusiastic attitudes towards most of the changes, in spite of some reservations. It could also be interesting to see if the power centers of the Pakistani Higher Education appreciate this enthusiasm and channel it for a strong Higher Education system in the country.

The Ecolological Theory of Human Development proposed by Urie Bronfenbrenner assumes that the activities and people involved in an evironment are essential to stimulate the aquisition of new abilities . Analyze the strategy of parent’s presence with their children in a swimming class for PWD during the teaching process. Also, verify the parent’s views on this experience and the participation of their child during practice. It is a qualitative and action-research. To collect data was utilized observation during to analyse the activities developed in a swimming class for PWD, on the presence of parents with their children. A semi-structured interview was used to analyse the perception parents after the experience of the classroom. Analysis of activities and the interview were based on the assumption of Bronfenbrenner (1996). It was found that 100% of the parents rated the positive experience of being with their children in the pool. We found that only 25% of parents reported that had entered the pool to play with their children. We emphasize that 75% had never entered in the water with their children, whether because of fear, lack of opportunity or not knowing how to swim. The proposal of parents’ participation in the swimming class with the PWD generated a favorable environment for development the activities. Parents identified the improvement, the potential and difficulties of PWD.
