Potassium disilicate glass and melt have been investigated by using anew partial charge based potential model in which nonbridging oxygens are differentiated from bridging oxygens by their charges. The model reproduces the structural data pertaining to the coordination polyhedra around potassium and the various bond angle distributions excellently. The dynamics of the glass has been studied by using space and time correlation functions. It is found that K ions migrate by a diffusive mechanism in the melt and by hops below the glass transition temperature. They are also found to migrate largely through nonbridging oxygen-rich sites in the silicate matrix, thus providing support to the predictions of the modified random network model.

Current-voltage (I-V) and impedance measurements were carried out in doped poly(3-methylthiophene) devices by varying the carrier density. As the carrier concentration reduces the I-V characteristics indicate that the conduction mechanism is limited by metal-polymer interface, as also observed in impedance data. The temperature dependence of I-V in moderately doped samples shows a trap-controlled space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC); whereas in lightly doped devices injection-limited conduction is observed at lower bias and SCLC at higher voltages. The carrier density-dependent quasi-Fermi level adjustment and trap-limited transport could explain this variation in conduction mechanism. Capacitance measurements at lower frequencies and higher bias voltages show a sign change in values due to the significant variations in the relaxation behaviour for lightly and moderately doped samples. The electrical hysteresis increases as carrier density is reduced due to the time scales involved in the de-trapping of carriers.

Temperature and photo-dependent current-voltage characteristics are investigated in thin film devices of a hybrid-composite comprising of organic semiconductor poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) and cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). A detailed study of the charge injection mechanism in ITO/PEDOT: PSS-CdTe QDs/Al device exhibits a transition from direct tunneling to Fowler-Nordheim tunneling with increasing electric field due to formation of high barrier at the QD interface. In addition, the hybrid-composite exhibits a huge photoluminescence quenching compared to aboriginal CdTe QDs and high increment in photoconductivity (similar to 400%), which is attributed to the charge transfer phenomena. The effective barrier height (Phi(B) approximate to 0.68 eV) is estimated from the transition voltage and the possible origin of its variation with temperature and photo-illumination is discussed. We report the localized charge carrier transport of two-phase composite Zn1-x Ni (x) O/NiO (0 a parts per thousand currency sign x a parts per thousand currency sign 1) using the temperature dependence of ac-resistivity rho (ac)(T) across the N,el temperature T (N) (= 523 K) of nickel oxide. Our results provide strong evidence to the variable range hopping of charge carriers between the localized states through a mechanism involving spin-dependent activation energies. The temperature variation of carrier hopping energy epsilon (h)(T) and nearest-neighbor exchange-coupling parameter J (ij)(T) evaluated from the small poleron model exhibits a well-defined anomaly across T (N). For all the composite systems, the average exchange-coupling parameter (J (ij))(AVG) nearly equals to 70 meV which is slightly greater than the 60-meV exciton binding energy of pure zinc oxide. The magnitudes of epsilon (h) (similar to 0.17 eV) and J (ij) (similar to 11 meV) of pure NiO synthesized under oxygen-rich conditions are consistent with the previously reported theoretical estimation based on Green's function analysis. A systematic correlation between the oxygen stoichiometry and, epsilon (h)(T) and J (ij)(T) is discussed.

We investigate theoretically the charge and spin transport in quantum wires grown along different crystallographic planes in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (DSOI). We find that changing the crystallographic planes leads to a variation of the anisotropy of the conductance due to a different interplay between the RSOI and DSOI, since the DSOI is induced by bulk inversion asymmetry, which is determined by crystallographic plane. This interplay depends sensitively on the crystallographic planes, and consequently leads to the anisotropic charge and spin transport in quantum wires embedded in different crystallographic planes.

With the target to design and develop new functionalized green triplet light emitters that possess distinctive electronic properties for robust and highly efficient phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs), a series of bluish-green to yellow-green phosphorescent tris-cyclometalated homoleptic iridium(III) complexes [Ir(ppy-X)(3)] (X=SiPh3, GePh3, NPh2, POPh2, OPh, SPh, SO2Ph, Hppy=2-phenylpyridine) have been synthesized and fully characterized by spectroscopic, redox, and photophysical methods

Crystalline poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanofibrils are introduced into the P3HT: [6, 6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) composite films via P3HT preaggregation in solution by adding a small amount of acetone, and the correlation of P3HT nanofibrils and the optoelectronic properties of P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells is investigated. It is found that the optical absorption and the hole transport or the resulted P3HT:PCBM composite films increase with the increase of the amount of P3HT nanofibrils due to the increased P3HT crystallinity and highly interconnected nanofibrillar P3HT networks. However, it is also found that high contents of crystalline P3HT nanofibrils may restrain PCBM molecules from demixing with the P3HT component that forms electron traps in the active layer. and hence reduce the charge collection efficiency. Small contents of P3HT nanofibrils not only improve the demixing between P3HT and PCBM components, but also enhance the hole transport via crystalline P3HT nanofibrillar networks, resulting in efficient charge collection.

The effects of the concentration of 10-(2-benzothiazolyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1,1,7,7-tetramethyl-1H, 5H, 11H-(1)-benzopyropyrano(6, 78-i,j)quinolizin-11-one (C545T) as dopant in polyfluorene (PFO) on the charge-carrier transport and electroluminescence (EL) performance were investigated by steady-state and transient EL measurements. A fully green emission from C545T was observed and the EL performance depends strongly on the C545T concentration. The mobility in the C545T-doped PFO film was determined by transient EL. The dopant concentration dependence of the current-voltage relationship indicated clearly the carrier trapping by the C545T molecules. The mobility in C545T:PFO changed significantly with the C545T concentration, and showed a nontrivial dependence on the doping level. The behavior may be understood in terms of the formation of an additional energy disorder due to potential fluctuation caused by the Coulomb interaction of the randomly distributed doping molecules.

The effects of doped fluorescent dye 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-i-propyl-6-(1, 1, 7, 7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTI) on the charge carrier injection, transport and electroluminescence (EL) performance in polyfluorene (PFO)-based polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) were investigated by steady-state current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and transient EL measurements. A red EL from DCJTI was observed and the EL performance depended strongly on the DCJTI concentration. The analysis of the steady-state I-V characteristics at different DCJTI concentrations found that three regions was shown in the I-V characteristics, and each region was controlled by different processes depending on the applied electric field. The effect of the dopant concentration on the potential-barrier height of the interface is estimated using the Fowler-Nordheim model. The dopant concentration dependence of the current-voltage relationship indicated clearly the carrier trapping by the DCJTI molecules. The mobility in DCJTI: PFO changed significantly with the DCJTI concentration, and showed a nontrivial dependence on the doping level. The effect of the concentration of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6-(1,1,7, 7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) as dopant in tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminum (Alq(3)) on the charge carrier transport in Alq(3):DCJTB was investigated by measuring the steady current-voltage characteristics and the transient electroluminescence. The dopant concentration dependence of the current-voltage relationship clearly indicates the carrier trapping by the DCJTB molecule. The DCJTB concentration significantly affects the electron mobility in Alq(3):DCJTB. The mobility has a nontrivial dependence on the doping level. For relatively low doping levels, less than 1%, the electron mobility of Alq(3):DCJTB decreases with the doping level. An increasing mobility is then observed if the dopant concentration is further increased, followed by a decrease for doping levels larger than similar to2%. The change of the electron mobility with the DCJTB concentration in Alq(3) is attributed to the additional energetic disorder due to potential fluctuations caused by the dipole-dipole interaction of random distribution dopant at the relatively low doping concentration, and to the phase separation at the high doping concentration.

We have investigated the current-voltage and electroluminescent (EL) characteristics of single-layer organic devices based on poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminium (Alq(3)) blend with different PVK : Alq(3) concentrations. The experimental results from the observed thickness and temperature dependence clearly demonstrate that the current at low voltage is due to the holes injected at the anode and is space-charge limited, whereas the current at the high voltage that steeply increases is explained as the electron tunnelling injection at the cathode. The hole mobility is directly determined by space-charge-limited current at the low voltage region and decreases with increasing Alq(3) content in the blend. The EL efficiency shows concentration dependence, which is attributed to the change of the transport of electrons and holes in the blend film.

L'objectif ultime en géomorphologie fluviale est d'expliquer les formes des cours d'eau et leur évolution temporelle et spatiale. La multiplication des études nous a mené à la réalisation que les systèmes géomorphologiques sont complexes. Les formes observées sont plus que la somme des processus individuels qui les régissent en raison d’interactions et de rétroactions non-linéaires à de multiples échelles spatiales et temporelles. Dans ce contexte, le but général de la thèse est de proposer et de tester de nouvelles avenues de recherche afin de mieux appréhender la complexité des dynamiques fluviales en utilisant des approches méthodologiques et analytiques mettant l’accent sur les interactions entre l’écoulement, le transport de sédiments en charge fond et la morphologie du lit en rivière graveleuse. Cette orientation découle du constat que les paradigmes actuels en géomorphologie fluviale n’arrivent pas à expliquer adéquatement la variabilité naturelle du transport en charge de fond ainsi que des formes du lit qui en résultent. Cinq pistes de réflexion sont développées sous forme d’articles basés sur des études de cas : 1. L'intégration des échelles de variation de l'écoulement permet d’insérer la notion de structures turbulentes dans des pulsations de plus grande échelle et d'améliorer la compréhension de la variabilité du transport de sédiments. 2. La quantification des taux de changement de l’écoulement (accélération /décélération) au cours d’une crue permet d’expliquer la variabilité des flux de transport en charge fond autant que la magnitude de l’écoulement. 3. L’utilisation de techniques de mesures complémentaires révèle une nouvelle dynamique du lit des rivières graveleuses, la dilatation et la contraction du lit suite à une crue. 4. La remise en cause du fait généralement accepté que le transport en charge de fond est corrélé positivement à l'intensité des modifications morphologiques en raison d’un problème associé aux échelles différentes des processus en cause. 5. L’approche systémique des dynamiques fluviales par l’utilisation d’analyses multivariées permet d’appréhender la complexité des dynamiques de rétroactions linéaires et non-linéaires dans l’évolution d’un chenal et d’illustrer l’importance de l’historique récent des changements géomorphologiques en réponse aux crues. Cette thèse se veut une avancée conceptuelle issue d'une profonde réflexion sur les approches classiques que l'on utilise en géomorphologie fluviale depuis plusieurs décennies. Elle est basée sur un jeu de données unique récolté lors du suivi intensif de 21 évènements de crue dans un petit cours d’eau à lit de graviers, le ruisseau Béard (Québec). Le protocole expérimental axé sur la simultanéité des mesures de l’écoulement, de la morphologie du lit et du transport de sédiments en charge de fond a permis de centrer la recherche directement sur les interactions entre les processus plutôt que sur les processus individuels, une approche rarement utilisée en géomorphologie fluviale. Chacun des chapitres illustre un nouveau concept ou une nouvelle approche permettant de résoudre certaines des impasses rencontrées actuellement en géomorphologie fluviale. Ces travaux ont des implications importantes pour la compréhension de la dynamique des lits de rivières et des habitats fluviaux et servent de point de départ pour de nouveaux développements.

En rivière à lit de graviers, le transport des sédiments en charge de fond est un processus intermittent qui dépend de plusieurs variables du système fluvial dont la prédiction est encore aujourd’hui inexacte. Les modèles disponibles pour prédire le transport par charriage utilisent des variables d’écoulement moyen et la turbulence n’est généralement pas considérée malgré que les tourbillons contenus dans les écoulements possèdent une quantité d’énergie importante. L’utilisation de nouvelles approches pour étudier la problématique du transport par charriage pourrait nous permettre d’améliorer notre connaissance de ce processus déterminant en rivière alluviale. Dans ce mémoire, nous documentons ces composantes de la dynamique fluviale dans un cours d’eau graveleux en période de crue. Les objectifs du projet de recherche sont : 1) d’examiner l’effet du débit sur les variables turbulentes et les caractéristiques des structures turbulentes cohérentes, 2) d’investiguer l’effet du débit sur les caractéristiques des événements de transport de sédiments individuels détectés à l’aide d’un nouvel algorithme développé et testé et 3) de relier les caractéristiques de l’écoulement turbulent aux événements de transport de sédiments individuels. Les données de turbulence montrent qu’à haut niveau d’eau, l’écoulement décéléré est peu cohérent et a une turbulence plus isotrope où les structures turbulentes cohérentes sont de courte durée. Ces observations se distinguent de celles faites à faible niveau d’eau, en écoulement accéléré, où la plus grande cohérence de l’écoulement correspond à ce qui est généralement observé dans les écoulements uniformes en rivières graveleuses. Les distributions de fréquence des variables associées aux événements de transport individuel (intensité de transport moyenne, durée d’événement et intervalle entre événements successifs) ont des formes différentes pour chaque intensité de crue. À haut niveau d’eau, le transport est moins intermittent qu’à faible débit où les événements rares caractérisent davantage les distributions. L’accélération de l’écoulement à petite échelle de temps joue un rôle positif sur le transport, mais surtout lorsque la magnitude de la crue mobilisatrice est en dessous du niveau plein bord. Les résultats de l’étude montrent que les caractéristiques de la turbulence ainsi que les liens complexes entre l’écoulement et le transport par charriage sont fonction du débit.
