Evaluation of an internet-based physical activity intervention: A preliminary investigation

The Internet has the potential for delivering innovative, interactive physical activity (PA) interventions to large numbers of people. This study was designed to test the efficacy. of ant Internet intervention that consisted of a Web site plus 12 weekly e-mail tip sheets, compared with a waiting list control group. The Internet intervention was theory based and emphasized clear, graphical presentation of PA information. Sixty-five (30 intervention and 35 control) sedentary adult employees of several large hospitals (9 men and 56 women) were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 study arms. Of the 65 participants, 57 completed the 1-month follow-up, and 52 completed the 3-month follow-up. Comparative study of the radiation-induced grafting of styrene onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropylvinyl ether) and polypropylene substrates. I: Kinetics and structural investigation

A comparative study has been made of the radiation grafting of styrene onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropyl vinyl ether) (PFA) and polypropylene (PP) substrates, using the simultaneous irradiation method. Effects of grafting conditions such as monomer concentrations, type of solvent, dose rate and irradiation dose on the grafting yield were investigated. Under the same grafting conditions it was found that a higher degree of grafting of styrene was obtained using a mixture of dichloromethane/methanol solvents for PFA and methanol for PP and the degree of grafting was higher in PP than in PFA at all doses. However, the micro-Raman spectroscopy analysis of the graft revealed that, for the same degree of grafting, the penetration depth of the grafted polystyrene into the substrate was higher in PFA than in PP substrates. In both polymers the crystallinity was hardly affected by the grafting process and the degree of crystallinity decreased slightly with grafting dose. The dependence of the initial rate of grafting on the dose rate and the monomer concentration was found to be 0.6 and 1.4 order for PFA and 0.15 and 2.2 for PP, respectively. The degree of grafting increased with increasing radiation dose in both polymers. However, the grafting yield decreased with an increase in the dose rate. The increase in the overall grafting yield for PFA and PP was accompanied by a proportional increase in the penetration depth of the graft into the substrates. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

Experimental investigation of criteria for continuous variable entanglement

We generate a pair of entangled beams from the interference of two amplitude squeezed beams. The entanglement is quantified in terms of EPR paradox and inseparability criteria, with both results clearly beating the standard quantum limit. We experimentally analyze the effect of decoherence on each criterion and demonstrate qualitative differences. We also characterize the number of required and excess photons present in the entangled beams and provide contour plots of the efficacy of quantum information protocols in terms of these variables.

Experimental investigation of continuous-variable quantum teleportation

We report the experimental demonstration of quantum teleportation of the quadrature amplitudes of a light field. Our experiment was stably locked for long periods, and was analyzed in terms of fidelity F and with signal transfer T-q=T++T- and noise correlation V-q=Vinparallel to out+Vinparallel to out-. An investigation of the thermal and tensile properties of PFA following γ-radiolysis

For some applications for fluoropolymers they must be subjected to high-energy radiation, e.g., when they are grafted with styrene using an irradiation method to produce fuel cell membranes or matrix supports for combinatorial chemistry. In some of these applications they may be subjected to mechanical stress or elevated temperature, so it is important to elucidate the effects of the radiolysis on these properties. In the present work the effect of gamma-radiolysis on the glass transition, melting behavior, and thermal stability of PFA has been studied as well as the effect of the radiolysis on the tensile properties of the polymer.

Investigation of the vapor-phase grafting of styrene onto PFA

Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropyI vinyl ether), PFA, was grafted with styrene from the vapor phase using a simultaneous radiation grafting method. The graft yields were measured as a function of the dose and dose rate and were found to be initially linearly dependent on the dose and independent of the dose rate up to dose rates of similar to3 kGy/h. However, at a dose rate of 6.2 kGy/h, the slope of the yield-grafting time plot decreased. Raman depth profiles of the grafts showed that the polystyrene concentrations were greatest near the surface of the grafted samples and decreased with depth. The maximum penetration depth of the graft depended on the radiation dose for a fixed dose rate. Fmoc-Rink loading tests showed that the grafts displayed superior loading compared to grafts prepared from bulk styrene or from styrene solutions other than methanol.

Os Estados Unidos e a ameaça do crime organizado transnacional nos anos 1990

O estudo analisa a inserção do crime organizado transnacional na agenda de segurança dos Estados Unidos e sua qualificação como uma das principais ameaças contemporâneas à ordem internacional pós Guerra Fria. Os resultados apontam a importância dos dois mandatos de Clinton (1993-2001) neste processo, cuja maior expressão é a Presidential Decision Directive 42, ao viabilizar, inclusive, a reorganização das estruturas policiais, militares e de Inteligência do país para combater esta ameaça. Conclui-se que a década de 1990 é o momento determinante da identificação norte-americana desta criminalidade como uma ameaça inédita, estrangeira e de grandes proporções.

INFIDELIDADE: um crime de gestão contra o património

Violência na imprensa : crime violento na imprensa portuguesa : estudo comparativo de dois jornais

O presente trabalho tem como principal objectivo identificar qual o conteúdo das notícias sobre crime violento retratados na imprensa portuguesa, em termos quantitativos, e perceber se apresentam diferenças significativas em dois jornais de informação geral. Consequentemente, importa reflectir em que medida a comunicação social pode influenciar as nossas representações sociais acerca dos fenómenos criminais, em especial o medo do crime, num prisma selectivo, implícito ao próprio processo de constituição e construção no campo dos media. Para a realização desta recolha fáctica ou documental procedeu-se à construção duma grelha de análise com o intuito de objectivar a recolha de dados. Posteriormente fez-se uma análise de conteúdo de notícias sobre crime violento, presentes nas primeiras páginas de dois jornais diários portugueses, o Correio da Manhã (CM) e o Diário de Notícias (DN), do mês de Agosto de 2008. Época em que os meios de comunicação social e o Poder político sustentaram que estávamos a viver uma onda de crime.

Heresia, doença, crime ou religião: o Espiritismo no discurso de médicos e cientistas sociais

Desde a segunda metade do século XIX e até a década de 1940, as práticas e doutrinas espíritas mobilizaram o pensamento médico, num duplo empreendimento intelectual e de intervenção social. O artigo aborda vários textos elaborados, neste período, por médicos (tais como Nina Rodrigues e Leonídio Ribeiro), explorando como neles é definido e analisado o espiritismo, e localizando, entre as diversas épocas, continuidades e rupturas. Na década de 1930, o espiritismo e os cultos de possessão em geral começam a ser tratados por referência a categorias sociológicas e antropológicas, sinalizando uma transformação importante no seu estatuto (Arthur Ramos é um nome chave). No artigo, esta transição é problematizada a partir da análise da categoria "higiene mental", utilizada por intelectuais durante as décadas de 1920 e 1930 e associada às discussões sobre a constituição e destinos do Brasil enquanto nação.
