A new strategy for the construction of the isotwistane skeleton is reported from easily available cyclohexadienes, which involves a one-pot cationic skeletal rearrangement and ene cyclisation of a bicyclo[2.2.2]octenone derivative and a cationic rearrangement of a tricyclo[5.3.0.0(4,8)]decane to a [4.3.1.0(3,7)]decane skeleton as the key steps in the synthesis of 2-pupukeanone.

Novel molecular matrices have been derived from coumarin-4-acetic acids and beta-phenylethylamines using the Bischler-Napieralski protocol which has led to the synthesis of analogues of tetrahydropapaverine in which the dimethoxybenzene moiety has been replaced by substituted coumarins. One carbon homologation has led to cyclization at the C3 position of coumarin generating the protoberberine skeleton. Structures have been confirmed by diffraction studies. The results showed that compounds 6e, 6f, 7e and 7f were found to be very effective against DNA samples of Gram positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and fungus Aspergillus niger. The nature of a burial is always ritualistic. This is often forgotten when dealing with Finnish inhumation burials containing animal bones. Only the animal bones found close to the deceased have traditionally been thought to have a ritualistic purpose. The animal bones found in the filling of the grave, which is still part of the burial, has on the other hand, often been neglected in the previous research. In this Master s thesis I will discuss the function and interpretation of animal bones in graves. The base of this study is six sites, all of different nature, from Finland. Luistari in Eura is from the western coast and is dated to Late Iron Age (and possibly Medieval period), the Medieval hamlet of Finno is situated in Espoo which is situated on the southern coast. Two town burials, Turku and Porvoo, are also included in this study. The graves from Turku are dated to Late Medieval period and Early Renaissance, whereas the cemetery in Porvoo is from the 18th century. Visulahti in Mikkeli is from the Late Iron Age and represents Eastern Finnish burial tradition, the same as Suotniemi from Käkisalmi parish, which is nowadays part of Russia. While parts of the animal bones had already been analysed before, the author also analysed animal bones for the purpose of the present Master´s thesis. The bones were compared to the burial contexts, when possible. Based on the comparisons I have made interpretations which might explain the existence of animal bones in the graves. The interpretations are among others sacrifice, commemoration meals and animal burials. The site could also have been a settlement site prior to the graves, thus the bones in the graves would belong to the settlement phase. When comparing the date of the studied sites, the town burials are later and the animal bones are probably related to previous or contemporary use of the sites as graveyards. On top of this there does not seem to be much difference in burial tradition between Eastern and Western Finland, although at least from the hamlet burials of Finno there are aspects that could be linked to Eastern burials. In making the interpretations I have taken into consideration the aspects of belief during different time periods when they could be accounted as relevant. Also the problems with bone preservation were relevant and challenging for the study. Often only the hardest substance of the skeleton, namely teeth, has been preserved. For this reason the quality of the archaeological documentation was a key issue in this study. In producing quality interpretations of the animal bones in graves, the bones, contexts and their relationship to the surrounding site should be documented with care.

Design of speaker identification schemes for a small number of speakers (around 10) with a high degree of accuracy in controlled environment is a practical proposition today. When the number of speakers is large (say 50–100), many of these schemes cannot be directly extended, as both recognition error and computation time increase monotonically with population size. The feature selection problem is also complex for such schemes. Though there were earlier attempts to rank order features based on statistical distance measures, it has been observed only recently that the best two independent measurements are not the same as the combination in two's for pattern classification. We propose here a systematic approach to the problem using the decision tree or hierarchical classifier with the following objectives: (1) Design of optimal policy at each node of the tree given the tree structure i.e., the tree skeleton and the features to be used at each node. (2) Determination of the optimal feature measurement and decision policy given only the tree skeleton. Applicability of optimization procedures such as dynamic programming in the design of such trees is studied. The experimental results deal with the design of a 50 speaker identification scheme based on this approach.

Estrogens the female sex hormones have numerous biological actions. Estradiol is the most abundant estrogen in women before menopause. It influences the development, maturation and function of the female reproductive tract. It also plays a role in mammary cancer. Accordingly determinations of estradiol level in body fluids assist in the evaluation of ovarian function and diagnosis for malignancies. Estriol is the primary estrogen in pregnant women and secreted from the fetoplacental unit. Measurement of estriol in maternal body fluids is the basis of fetoplacental monitoring test. Concentration of estrogens in body fluids is determined by immunoassay. Accuracy of this measurement depends on the availability of a specific antibody. As estrogens are not antigenic, their derivatives (haptens) are coupled with a carrier and this hapten-protein conjugate is used to generate antibodies. Specificity of the generated antibody largely depends on the structure of hapten. Therefore the synthesis of a hapten with a right structure is crucial for the accurate measurement of a steroid. We have synthesised new haptens for estradiol and estriol by adding an alkyl or alkoxy side chain at the C-7 of estrane skeleton. The side chains carry a terminal amino group, which can be used for conjugation with a carrier molecule. Estrogens and their biosynthetic precursor androgens both exist as fatty acid esters. They are known to act as hormone storage but their physiological role is not completely known yet. Our collaborator is studying their effect in cardiovascular diseases. We synthesised fatty acid ester derivatives of several steroids in high yield by a very rapid procedure (in 1 min) under microwave irradiation in an ionic liquid (IL). An expedient regioselective hydrolysis at C-3 of estradiol diesters is also reported. 8-Isoestrogens are compounds of pharmaceutical interests, their synthesis, structure, conformation and biological activity studies are ongoing. 7-Hydroxy-8-isoestradiol and 7-alkyl ether of it were synthesised as well. During this study we have developed a selective O-debenzylation method. A mild route for selective removal of benzylic protection on phenol in presence of benzyl protected alcohol was explored.

Infrared spectra of imidazolidine-2-thione (N,N?-ethylenethiourea, ETU) and its N,N?-deuterated (ETU-d2) and S-methylthiouronium iodides have been recorded from 4000 to 30 cm?1. Normal coordinate analyses of ETU and ETU-d2 have been made for all the fundamental frequencies, employing a Urey-Bradley potential function supplemented with valence type constants for the out of plane modes of the planar skeleton. Raman frequencies of ETU from literature have been utilised. The results of the vibrational analyses are discussed in relation to the group frequencies in structurally related molecules and frequency shifts on deuteration and S-methylation. The normal coordinate treatment is also performed for the planar vibrations of imidazolidine-2-selenone (N,N?-ethyleneselenourea, ESU) to propose assignments for ESU and so also to support the assignments of ETU.

The i.r. spectra of 1,3-thiazolidine-2-thione, ?2-selone and their N-deuteriated derivatives have been investigated in the region between 4000 and 20 cm?1. A complete assignment of the fundamental vibrational frequencies has been made based upon the normal coordinate analysis carried out using a simple UreyBradley force field supplemented by the valence force constants for the out-of-plane vibrations of the planar molecular skeleton. The proposed assignments are discussed in relation to the group frequencies in structurally related molecules and in terms of the computed potential energy distributions among the symmetry coordinates.

MnO/C composite coatings were grown by the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process on ceramic alumina in argon ambient. Characterization by various techniques confirms that these coatings are homogeneous composites comprising nanometer-sized MnO particles embedded in a matrix of nanometer-sized graphite. Components of the MnO/C composite coating crystalline disordered, but are electrically quite conductive. Resistance vs. temperature measurements show that coating resistance increases exponentially from a few hundred ohms at room temperature to a few megaohms at 30 K. Logarithmic plots of reduced activation energy vs. temperature show that the coating material undergoes a metal-insulator transition. The reduced activation energy exponent for the film under zero magnetic field was 2.1, which is unusually high, implying that conduction is suppressed at much faster rate than the Mott or the Efros-Shklovskii hopping mechanism. Magnetoconductance us. magnetic field plots obtained at various temperatures show a high magnetoconductance (similar to 28.8%) at 100 K, which is unusually large for a disordered system, wherein magnetoresistance is attributed typically to weak localization. A plausible explanation for the unusual behavior observed in the carbonaceous disordered composite material is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The first stereoselective total synthesis of the natural sesquiterpenes 4 and 5, having the tricyclo[6.2.1.0(1,5)]undecane skeleton with a bridgehead methyl group, is reported via the intermediate 9, which was obtained by the acid catalysed rearrangement of the alcohols 7 and 8.

Synthesis of methyl 2, 7-dimethyltricyclo{5.2.2.0(1,5}undec-5-en-6-carboxylates, the tricyclic skeleton present in (+)-allo-cedrol (1) is described using the Diels-Alder strategy. Thus, Birch reduction of the aromatic acid 8 gives 5, the methyl ester of which is isomerised with DBU to a 1:1 mixture of the dienes 6 and 4. Cycloaddition of this mixture with 2-chloroacrylonitrile followed by hydrolysis yields the ketone 60 having the tricyclo{5.2.2.0(1.5)}undec-5-ene framework. Similar reaction with methyl vinyl ketone affords the regioisomeric adducts 61 and 62.

European accounts from the 17th century onwards have referred to the repute and manufacture of “wootz’, a traditional crucible steel made especially in parts of southern India in the former provinces of Golconda, Mysore and Salem. Pliny's Natural History mentions the import of iron and steel from the Seres which have been thought to refer to the ancient southern Indian kingdom of the Cheras. As yet the scale of excavations and surface surveys is too limited to link the literary accounts to archaeometallurgical evidence, although pioneering exploratory investigations have been made by scholars, especially on the pre-industrial production sites of Konasamudram and Gatihosahalli discussed in 18th-19th century European accounts. In 1991–2 during preliminary surveys of ancient base metal mining sites, Srinivasan came across unreported dumps with crucible fragments at Mel-Siruvalur in Tamil Nadu, and Tintini and Machnur in Karnataka and she collected surface specimens from these sites as well as from the known site of Gatihosahalli. She was also given crucible fragments by the Tamil University, Tanjavur, from an excavated megalithic site at Kodumanal, dated to ca 2nd c. Bc, mentioned in Tamil Sangam literature (ca 3rd c. BC-3rd c. AD), and very near Karur, the ancient capital of the Sangam Cheras. Analyses of crucible fragments from the surface collection at Mel-Siruvalur showed several iron prills with a uniform pearlitic structure of high-carbon hypereutectoid steel (∼1–1.5% C) suggesting that the end product was uniformly a high-carbon steel of a structure consistent with those of high-carbon steels used successfully to experimentally replicate the watered steel patterns on ‘Damascus’ swords. Investigations indicate that the process was of carburisation of molten low carbon iron (m.p. 1400° C) in crucibles packed with carbonaceous matter. The fabric of crucibles from all the above mentioned sites appears similar. Preliminary investigations on these crucibles are thus reported to establish their relationship to crucible production of carbon steel and to thereby extend the known horizons of this technology further.
