The growth of zinc hexacyanoferrate (ZnHCF) hybrid film on the surface of graphite-epoxy composite (GEC) electrodes was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. Surface morphology of the hybrid film was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. The effect of the type of monovalent cations on the redox behaviour of hybrid film was also studied. This effect indicated that the radius of the hydrated cation mainly determines the ion permeability of the film. The electrochemical behavior of the substituted anilines (procaine and sulfamerazine) in 1 M KCl of the modified GEC electrode showed a decrease of the cathodic currents while increasing the concentration of these analytes. The developed sensor also showed excellent stability for long time usage, higher sensitivity and cost-effective fabrication.

Objective: the aim of this investigation was to evaluate the cervical adaptation of metal crowns under several conditions, namely (1) variations in the cervical finish line of the preparation, (2) application of internal relief inside the crowns, and (3) cementation using different luting materials. Method and Materials: One hundred eighty stainless-steel master dies were prepared simulating full crown preparations: 60 in chamfer (CH), 60 in 135-degree shoulder (OB), and 60 in rounded shoulder (OR). The finish lines were machined at approximate dimensions of a molar tooth preparation (height: 5.5 mm; cervical diameter: 8 mm; occlusal diameter: 6.4 mm; taper degree: 6; and cervical finish line width: 0.8 mm). One hundred eighty corresponding copings with the same finish lines were fabricated. A 30-mu m internal relief was machined 0.5 mm above the cervical finish line in 90 of these copings. The fit of the die and the coping was measured from all specimens (L0) prior to cementation using an optical microscope. After manipulation of the 3 types of cements (zinc phosphate, glass-ionomer, and resin cement), the coping was luted on the corresponding standard master die under 5-kgf loading for 4 minutes. Vertical discrepancy was again measured (L1), and the difference between L1 and L0 indicated the cervical adaptation. Results: Significant influence of the finish line, cement type, and internal relief was observed on the cervical adaptation (P < .001). The CH type of cervical finish line resulted in the best cervical adaptation of the metal crowns regardless of the cement type either with or without internal relief (36.6 +/- 3 to 100.8 +/- 4 mu m) (3-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test, alpha = .05). The use of glass-ionomer cement resulted in the least cervical discrepancy (36.6 +/- 3 to 115 +/- 4 mu m) than those of other cements (45.2 +/- 4 to 130.3 +/- 2 mu m) in all conditions. Conclusion: the best cervical adaptation was achieved with the chamfer type of finish line. The internal relief improved the marginal adaptation significantly, and the glass-ionomer cement led to the best cervical adaptation, followed by zinc phosphate and resin cement.

Transverse-optical (TO) and longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons of zinc blende InxGa1-xN (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.31) layers are observed through first-order micro-Raman scattering experiments. The samples are grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates, and x-ray diffraction measurements are performed to determine the epilayer alloy composition. Both the TO and LO phonons exhibit a one-mode-type behavior, and their frequencies display a linear dependence on the composition. The Raman data reported here are used to predict the A(1) (TO) and E-1 (TO) phonon frequencies of the hexagonal InxGa1-xN alloy. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)01234-6].

Zinc oxide varistors are very complex systems, and the dominant mechanism of voltage barrier formation in these systems has not been well established. Yet the MNDO quantum mechanical theoretical calculation was used in this work to determine the most probable defect type at the surface of a ZnO cluster. The proposed model represents well the semiconducting nature as well as the defects at the ZnO bulk and surface. The model also shows that the main adsorption species that provide stability at the ZnO surface are O-, O2 -, and O2.

Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings were fed with purified or practical diets, supplemented with 150 Ing Zn/kg, from different sources. Dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), and gross energy (GE) apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC), as well as zinc, copper, calcium, and phosphorus apparent absorption coefficients (AAC) were determined by the addition of 0.1% chromic oxide to the diets. The supplemental zinc sources utilized were commercial grade zinc sulfate monohydrate (ZnSO 4), zinc oxide (ZnO) and a zinc amino acid complex (Zn-AA). Analytical grade zinc sulfate heptahydrate was also utilized as a standard reference zinc source. There was a significant difference between purified (74.9%) and practical (41.3%) zinc AAC for the ZnO supplemented diets (P < 0.05). The supplemental zinc sources presented similar AAC when purified diets were utilized. However, ZnSO 4 was the best supplemental zinc source when practical type diets were used. There were no significant differences between supplemental zinc AAC from ZnS0 4 (68.9%), and supplemental zinc AAC from Zn-AA (61.3%) in practical diets, but Zn-AA diet showed a statistically lower zinc AAC when compared with the standard zinc source diet (75.6%). The practical diet supplemented with ZnO had the worst supplemental zinc AAC (41.3%). Dietary copper (74.21%), calcium (70.9%), and phosphorus (71.9%) AAC of the practical diets supplemented with ZnO were statistically lower (P < 0.05) than the respective AAC of the practical ZnSO 4 supplemented diets (83.6%, 84.1%, 87.1%).The ADC of the practical ZnO supplemented diet for DM (76.3%), CP (88.6%), EE (82.4%), and GE (81.6%) were statiscally lower than the respective ADC of the ZnSO 4 practical diet (86.0, 92.7, 93.6, 89.6%, respectively) and those ADC of the Zn-AA practical diet (84.7, 92.7, 93.7, 88.2%, respectively) (P < 0.05). Hence, these results indicate that ZnSO 4 and Zn-AA have equivalent intestinal absorption as supplemental zinc sources for Nile tilapia juveniles and both are superior to ZnO. © Copyright by the World Aquaculture Society 2005.

Introduction: Lateral condensation effectiveness may be influenced by the gutta-percha and finger spreader taper used during root canal obturation. Objective: To evaluate the penetration ability of finger spreader into simulated root canals prepared using MTwo rotary system and filled with different gutta-percha and finger spreader tapers. Material and methods: Resin blocks with curved root canals had the apical diameter enlarged up to #25.06 and distributed into groups (n = 6) according to the gutta-percha taper (#25.02, #25.04, and #25.06) and the finger spreader (#30 and #35 NiTi, and stainless steel B) used to perform cold lateral condensation. After applying a load of 1.5 Kg over the finger spreaders’ head, the distance between the finger spread tip and the apical limit of the root canal preparation were obtained. The data were submitted to Anova and Tukey-Krammer’s test, with 5% of significance. Results: The gutta-percha cones with 0.02 taper enabled higher finger spreader penetration when compared to 0.04 and 0.06 tapers (p < 0.05), which were similar between each other (p > 0.05), regardless of the type and diameter of the finger spreader used. When different finger spreaders were compared among themselves, stainless steel B showed higher penetration ability (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that the stainless-steel finger spreaders showed superior penetration ability and gutta-percha with lower tapers enabled a more effective lateral condensation at the apical third.

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin is a gastrointestinal peptide hormone (a 28-amino acid peptide) produced primarily by X/A cells in the oxyntic glands of the stomach fundus and cells lining the duodenum cavern. It suppresses insulin secretion and action and commands a significant role in regulating food intake. The aim of the present study was to show that modified laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (MLSG), in which a significant part of the gastric fundus and body of the stomach is removed up to 1 inch from the pylorus vein, may contribute to decreasing circulating ghrelin levels. METHODS: A study population consisting of 150 individuals was monitored after undergoing a MLSG, with individuals chosen based on a documented history of diabetes mellitus type 2 and metabolic syndrome, clinical results determining a body mass index (BMI) of 35 to 60 kg/m(2), peptide C level greater than 1, negative anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase, negative anti-insulin, and confirmed stability of drug/insulin treatment and glycosylated hemoglobin greater than 6.5% for at least 24 and 3 months, respectively, before enrollment. RESULTS: Twenty-four months after surgery, 150 patients (86.6%) presented with normal glycemic levels between 77 and 99 mg/dL. All patients improved average serum insulin levels by 9 mU/L and average glycosylated hemoglobin levels by 5.1% (normal range, 4%-6%). All patients tested negative for Helicobacter pylori and stopped using insulin, with 3 patients prescribed twice-daily use of an oral hypoglycemiant. In 14% of cases, patients experienced partial hair loss with low serum zinc levels and were prescribed oral zinc reposition and topical hair stimulants. The average weight loss recorded was 44.6% for patients with a BMI less than 45 kg/m(2) and 58% for patients with a BMI greater than 50 kg/m(2). CONCLUSIONS: The MLSG is a safe procedure with a low morbidity rate (2.7%) (4 cases of fistula and 2 of bleeding) and no surgical mortality in this study. This surgery can promote control of diabetes mellitus type 2 and aid the treatment of exogenous overweight and morbidly obese individuals. The results of this study show that only through resection of the ghrelin-producing gastric area can most obesity cases and diabetes type II conditions be reverted to nonobese and controlled diabetes. The intermetallic compounds ScPdZn and ScPtZn were prepared from the elements by high-frequency melting in sealed tantalum ampoules. Both structures were refined from single crystal X-ray diffractometer data: YAlGe type, Cmcm, a = 429.53(8), b = 907.7(1), c = 527.86(1) pm, wR2 = 0.0375, 231 F2 values, for ScPdZn and a = 425.3(1), b = 918.4(2), c = 523.3(1) pm, wR2 = 0.0399, 213 F2 values for ScPtZn with 14 variables per refinement. The structures are orthorhombically distorted variants of the AlB2 type. The scandium and palladium (platinum atoms) build up ordered networks Sc3Pd3 and Sc3Pt3 (boron networks) which are slightly shifted with respect to each other. These networks are penetrated by chains of zinc atoms (262 pm in ScPtZn) which correspond to the aluminum positions, i.e. Zn(ScPd) and Zn(ScPt). The corresponding group-subgroup scheme and the differences in chemical bonding with respect to other AlB2-derived REPdZn and REPtZn compounds are discussed. 45Sc solid state NMR spectra confirm the single crystallographic scandium sites. From electronic band structure calculations the two compounds are found metallic with free electron like behavior at the Fermi level. A larger cohesive energy for ScPtZn suggests a more strongly bonded intermetallic than ScPdZn. Electron localization and overlap population analyses identify the largest bonding for scandium with the transition metal (Pd, Pt).

The lead storage battery as it is used today is made up of the pasted type plates of lead dioxide, the anode, and sponge lead, the cathode, and wooden or hard rubber separators, which serve to insulate these from one another. In manufacturing these, it is desirable to keep them free from impurities.

BACKGROUND Aggregation of growth hormone (GH) required for its proper storage in granules is facilitated by zinc (Zn(2+)) transported by specific zinc transporters in and out of the regulated secretory pathway. Slc30a5 (ZnT5) was reported to have the highest gene expression among all zinc transporters in primary mouse pituitary cells while ZnT5-null mice presented with abnormal bone development and impaired growth compared to wild-type counterparts. METHODS In vitro studies performed in GH3 cells, a rat pituitary cell line that endogenously produces rat GH (rGH), included analysis of: cytoplasmic Zn(2+) pool changes after altering rSlc30a5 expression (luciferase assay), rZnT5 association with different compartments of the regulated secretory pathway (confocal microscopy), and the rGH secretion after rSlc30a5 knock-down (Western blot). RESULTS Confocal microscopy demonstrated high co-localization of rZnT5 with ER and Golgi (early secretory pathway) while siRNA-mediated knock-down of rSlc30a5 gene expression led to a significant reduction in rGH secretion. Furthermore, altered expression of rSlc30a5 (knock-down/overexpression) evoked changes in the cytoplasmic Zn(2+) pool indicating its important role in mediating Zn(2+) influx into intracellular compartments of the regulated secretory pathway. CONCLUSION Taken together, these results suggest that ZnT5 might play an important role in regulated GH secretion that is much greater than previously anticipated.

Three new coordination polymers [M(Pht)(1-MeIm)2]n (where M=Cu (1), Zn (2), Co (3); Pht2−=dianion of o-phthalic acid; 1-MeIm=1-methylimidazole) and two compounds [M(1-MeIm)6](HPht)2 · 2H2O (M=Co (4), Ni (5)) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structures of 1–3 (2 is isostructural to 3) consist of [M(1-MeIm)2] building units connected by 1,6-bridging phthalate ions to form infinite chains. In complex 1, each copper(II) center adopts a square coordination mode of N2O2 type by two O atoms from different phthalate ions and two N atoms of 1-MeIm, whereas in 3 two independent metal atoms are tetrahedrally (N2O2) coordinated to a pair of Pht ligands and a pair of 1-MeIm molecules. There are only van der Waals interactions between the chains in 1, while the three-dimensional network in 3 is assembled by C–H⋯O contacts. In contrast to polymers 1–3 the structures of 4 and 5 (complexes are also isostructural) are made up of the [M(1-MeIm)6]2+ cation, two hydrogen phthalate anions (HPht−) and two H2O solvate molecules. The coordination around each metal(II) atom is octahedral with six nitrogen atoms of 1-MeIm. Extended hydrogen bonding networks embracing the solvate water molecules and a phthalate residue as well as the weak C–H⋯O interactions stabilize the three-dimensional structures. Magnetic studies clearly show that the magnetic ions do not interact with each other. Furthermore, in compound 4 we have another example of a highly anisotropic Co2+ ion with a rhombic g-tensor and large zero-field-splitting. The complexes were also characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and all data are discussed in the terms of known structures.

The viral protein Npro is unique to the genus Pestivirus within the family Flaviviridae. After autocatalytic cleavage from the nascent polyprotein, Npro suppresses type I IFN (IFN-α/β) induction by mediating proteasomal degradation of IFN regulatory factor 3 (IRF-3). Previous studies found that the Npro-mediated IRF-3 degradation was dependent of a TRASH domain in the C-terminal half of Npro coordinating zinc by means of the amino acid residues C112, C134, D136 and C138. Interestingly, four classical swine fever virus (CSFV) isolates obtained from diseased pigs in Thailand in 1993 and 1998 did not suppress IFN-α/β induction despite the presence of an intact TRASH domain. Through systematic analyses, it was found that an amino acid mutation at position 40 or mutations at positions 17 and 61 in the N-terminal half of Npro of these four isolates were related to the lack of IRF-3-degrading activity. Restoring a histidine at position 40 or both a proline at position 17 and a lysine at position 61 based on the sequence of a functional Npro contributed to higher stability of the reconstructed Npro compared with the Npro from the Thai isolate. This led to enhanced interaction of Npro with IRF-3 along with its degradation by the proteasome. The results of the present study revealed that amino acid residues in the N-terminal domain of Npro are involved in the stability of Npro, in interaction of Npro with IRF-3 and subsequent degradation of IRF-3, leading to downregulation of IFN-α/β production.
