The standards of diagnostic systems formation in medicine based on modeling expert’s “means of action” in form of illegible trees of solution-making taking into consideration the criteria of credibility and usefulness have been suggested. The fragments of “applied” trees at diagnosing infectious and urological diseases have been considered as well. The possibilities of modern tooling theory usage for decision-making during creation of artificial intelligence systems have been discussed.

The accuracy of many aerospace structures is limited by the accuracy of assembly tooling which is in turn limited by the accuracy of the measurements used to set the tooling. Further loss of accuracy results from different rates of thermal expansion for the components and tooling. This paper describes improved tooling designs and setting processes which have the potential to significantly improve the accuracy of aerospace structures. The most advanced solution described is environmentally isolated interferometer networks embedded within tooling combined with active compensation of component pick-ups. This would eliminate environmental effects on measurements while also allowing compensation for thermal expansion. A more immediately realizable solution is the adjustment of component pick-ups using micrometer jacking screws allowing multilateration to be employed during the final stages of the setting process to generate the required offsets. Aerospace manufacturers typically use monolithic steel fixtures to control the form of assemblies. This tooling is very expensive, has long lead times and has little ability to accommodate product variation and design changes. Since the tool setting and recertification process is manual and time consuming, monolithic structures are required in order to maintain the tooling tolerances for multiple years without recertification. This paper introduces the Metrology Enhanced Tooling for Aerospace (META) Framework which interfaces multiple metrology technologies with the tooling, components, workers and automation. This will allow rapid or even real-time fixture re-certification with improved product verification leading to a reduced risk of product non-conformance and increased fixture utilization while facilitating flexible fixtures.

Companies and their services are being increasingly exposed to global business networks and Internet-based ondemand services. Much of the focus is on flexible orchestration and consumption of services, beyond ownership and operational boundaries of services. However, ways in which third-parties in the “global village” can seamlessly self-create new offers out of existing services remains open. This paper proposes a framework for service provisioning in global business networks that allows an open-ended set of techniques for extending services through a rich, multi-tooling environment. The Service Provisioning Management Framework, as such, supports different modeling techniques, through supportive tools, allowing different parts of services to be integrated into new contexts. Integration of service user interfaces, business processes, operational interfaces and business object are supported. The integration specifications that arise from service extensions are uniformly reflected through a kernel technique, the Service Integration Technique. Thus, the framework preserves coherence of service provisioning tasks without constraining the modeling techniques needed for extending different aspects of services.

Fundamental tooling is required in order to apply USDL in practical settings. This chapter discusses three fundamental types of tools for USDL. First, USDL editors have been developed for expert and casual users, respectively. Second, several USDL repositories have been built to allow editors accessing and storing USDL descriptions. Third, our generic USDL marketplace allows providers to describe their services once and potentially trade them anywhere. In addition, the iosyncrasies of service trading as opposed to the simpler case of product trading. The chapter also presents several deployment scenarios of such tools to foster individual value chains and support new business models across organizational boundaries. We close the chapter with an application of USDL in the context of service engineering.

A general description of the need for hospital flow meters is given along with an analysis of some common flow measurement methods.

The design criteria, establishment of the basic configuration of the instrument, and the evolution of the final design are presented in detail. The ability of the magnetic crossover mechanism to extract the square root of an input is explained, and design curves are presented. The action of the flow totalizer is described in relation to the rest of the instrument. A complete set of manufacturing drawings for the instrument and its tooling is included in the thesis.

In conclusion, an evaluation of the completed instrument is made, and improvements and modifications are indicated. Mention is made of the adaptability of the magnetic crossover mechanism to other instrumentation.

Ever increasing demands on functional integration of high strength light weight products leads to the development of a new class of manufacturing processes. The application of bulk forming processes to sheet or plate semi-finished products, sometimes in combination with conventional sheet forming processes creates new products with the requested properties. The paper defines this new class of sheet-bulk metal forming processes, gives an overview of the existing processes belonging to this class, highlights the tooling aspects as well as the resulting product properties and presents a short summary of the relevant work that has been done towards modeling and simulation. © 2012 CIRP.

Ring rolling is an established method to produce seamless rings of different cross-sectional geometries. For dish shaped rings, there are applications in different areas such as offshore, aeronautics or the energy sector. At the moment, dish shaped rings are produced by machining of rings with rectangular shaped cross section, by (open die) hollow forging on a conical mandrel or by using shaped ring rolling tools. These ways of manufacturing have the disadvantage of high material waste, additional costs for special tools, long process time and limited or inflexible geometries. Therefore, the manufacturing of dish shaped rings on conventional radial-axial ring rolling mills would expand the range of products for ring producers. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of an alternative to the current manufacturing processes, without requiring additional tooling and material costs. Therefore, the intended formation of dish shaped rings-previously regarded as a form error-is investigated. Based on an analysis of geometrical requirements and metal flow mechanisms, a rolling strategy is presented, causing dishing and ring climbing by a large height reduction of the ring. Using this rolling strategy dish shaped rings with dishing angles up to 18° were achieved. In addition to the experiments finite element method (FEM)-simulations of the process have been successfully conducted, in order to analyze the local strain evolution. However, when the contact between ring and main roll is lost in the process the ring starts to oscillate around the mandrel and neither dishing nor ring climbing is observed. © 2013 German Academic Society for Production Engineering (WGP).

The influence of manufacturing tolerance on direct operating cost (DOC) is extrapolated from an engine nacelle to be representative of an entire aircraft body. Initial manufacturing tolerance data was obtained from the shop floor at Bombardier Aerospace Shorts, Belfast while the corresponding costs were calculated according to various recurring elements such as basic labour and overtime labour, rework, concessions, and redeployment; along with the non-recurrent costs due to tooling and machinery, etc. The relation of tolerance to cost was modelled statistically so that the cost impact of tolerance change could be ascertained. It was shown that a relatively small relaxation in the assembly and fabrication tolerances of the wetted surfaces resulted in reduced costs of production that lowered aircraft DOC, as the incurred drag penalty was predicted and taken into account during the optimisation process.

What-if Simulations have been identified as one solution for business performance related decision support. Such support is especially useful in cases where it can be automatically generated out of Business Process Management (BPM) Environments from the existing business process models and performance parameters monitored from the executed business process instances. Currently, some of the available BPM Environments offer basic-level performance prediction capabilities. However, these functionalities are normally too limited to be generally useful for performance related decision support at business process level. In this paper, an approach is presented which allows the non-intrusive integration of sophisticated tooling for what-if simulations, analytic performance prediction tools process optimizations or a combination Of Such solutions into already existing BPM environments. The approach abstracts from process modelling techniques which enable automatic decision support spanning processes across numerous BPM Environments. For instance, this enables end-to-end decision support for composite processes modelled with the Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) on top of existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) processes modelled with proprietary languages.

The primary goal of this work is to quantify any bene?ts that the use of digital manufacturing methods can offer when used upstream from production, for manufacturing process design, and tool development. Learning at this stage of product development is referred to as management learning. Animated build simulations have been used to develop build procedures and tooling for a panel assembly for the new Bombardier CRJ1000 (Canadair Regional Jet, 100 seat). When the jig format was developed, its simulated performance was compared to that of current CRJ700/900 panel builds to identify and quantify any improvements in terms of tooling cost and panel build time. When comparing like-for-like functions between existing CRJ700/900 (Canadair Regional Jet, 70/90 seat) and the
CRJ1000 tooling, it was predicted that the digitally assisted improvements had brought about a 4.9% reduction in jig cost. An evaluation of the build process for the CRJ1000 uplock panel predicted a 5.2% reduction in the assembly time. In addition to the improvement of existing tooling functions, new jig functionality was added so that both the drilling and riveting functions could be carried out in a single jig for the new RJ1000 panel.

This paper presents an analytical model for the prediction of the elastic behaviour of plain-weave fabric composites. The fabric is a hybrid plain-weave with different materials and undulations in the warp and weft directions. The derivation of the effective material properties is based on classical laminate theory (CLT).

The theoretical predictions have been compared with experimental results and predictions using alternative models available in the literature. Composite laminates were manufactured using the resin infusion under flexible tooling (RIFT) process and tested under tension and in-plane shear loading to validate the model. A good correlation between theoretical and experimental results for the prediction of in-plane properties was obtained. The limitations of the existing theoretical models based on classical laminate theory (CLT) for predicting the out-of-plane mechanical properties are presented and discussed.
