In this study, by the use of partial least squares (PLS) method and 26 quantum chemical descriptors computed by PM3 Hamiltonian, a quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model was developed for reductive dehalogenation rate constants of 13 halogenated aliphatic compounds in sediment slurry under anaerobic conditions. The model can be used to explain the dehalogenation mechanism. Halogenated aliphatic compounds with great energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (E-lumo), total energy (TE), electronic energy (EE), the smallest bond order of the carbon-halogen bonds (BO) and the most positive net atomic charges on an atom of the molecule (q(+)) values tend to be reductively dehalogenated slow, whereas halogenated aliphatic compounds with high values of molecular weight (Mw), average molecular polarizability (a) and core-core repulsion energy (CCR) values tend to be reductively dehalogenated fastest. VOx thin films have been fabricated by low temperature ion beam sputtering and post reductive annealing process. Semiconductor-metal phase transition is observed for the film annealed at 400 degrees C for 2 hours. The film also shows a polycrystal structure with grain size from 50nm to 150nm. The VOx thin films fabricated by this process have a TCR up to -2.7% at room temperature. Our results indicate a promising fabrication method of the nano-structured VOx film with relatively high TCR and semiconductor-metal phase transition.

An efficient method for the synthesis of symmetrical diselenides is described. Reductive selenation of aromatic and heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes (ArCHO) with Se/CO/H2O in DMF afforded diselenides (ArCH2SeSeCH2Ar) in yields up to 94% under atmospheric pressure without use of a base.

The reductive carbonylation of nitrobenzene catalyzed by selenium to yield unsymmetric phenylureas has been studied. When secondary amines were used as coreagents, a single product, PhNHCONR2, was formed; when primary amines were chosen as coreagents, mixed products, including RNHCONHR, RNHCONHPh and PhNHCONHPh, were obtained. 2-Benzoxazolones or 2-benzimidazolones are synthesized in moderate to good yields in the presence of a base (KOH, NaOH, KOAc, NEt3, DBU) at atmospheric pressure or under a high pressure of CO by one-pot reductive carbonylation of 2-nitrophenols or 2-nitroanihne in the presence of selenium as catalyst. Besides the effect of base, the effects of solvent and temperature on the reaction were investigated at high or atmospheric pressure. Contrasting results were obtained for 2-benzoxazolones or 2-benzimidazolone at high and atmospheric pressures. Moreover, phase-transfer catalysis was exhibited. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Treatment of Zn(Si(SiMe3)3)2 with ZnX2 (X = Cl, Br, I) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 23 °C afforded [Zn(Si(SiMe3)3)X(THF)]2 in 83–99% yield. X-ray crystal structures revealed dimeric structures with Zn2X2 cores. Thermogravimetric analyses of [Zn(Si(SiMe3)3)X(THF)]2 demonstrated a loss of coordinated THF between 50 and 155 °C and then single-step weight losses between 200 and 275 °C. The nonvolatile residue was zinc metal in all cases. Bulk thermolyses of [Zn(Si(SiMe3)3)X(THF)]2 between 210 and 250 °C afforded zinc metal in 97–99% yield, Si(SiMe3)3X in 91–94% yield, and THF in 81–98% yield. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that zinc formation becomes energetically favorable upon THF loss. Similar reactions are likely to be general for M(SiR3)n/MXn pairs and may lead to new metal-film-growth processes for chemical vapor deposition and atomic layer deposition.

The direct addition of enolizable aldehydes and a-halo thioesters to produce beta-hydroxy thioesters enabled by reductive soft enolization is reported. The transformation is operationally simple and efficient and has the unusual feature of giving high syn-selectivity, which is the opposite of that produced for (thio)esters under conventional conditions. Moreover, excellent diastereoselectivity results when a chiral nonracemic alpha-hydroxy aldehyde derivative is used.
