Polymer supports and polymeric complexes are highly versatile and they are successfully employed as efficient reagents, substrates and catalysts. Recently there observed a growing interest in the synthesis of tailor-made polymer supports and functionalized polymers for the preparation of metal complexes for various applications. They have the combination of properties due to the macromolecular structure as well as due to the reactivity of the functional group. An interesting feature of functional polymers is their affinity towards metal ions. Therefore the synthesis, characterization and application of such polymeric complexes have great scientific and analytical importance. In this investigation three series of polymeric complexes of transition metal ions are prepared from three schiff bases. All the complexes and polymeric schiff bases were characterized by analytical, spectral and thermal methods The thesis consist of six chapters. The first chapter contains an introduction and a brief review on application of polymer supports, polymer supported ligands and complexes. The second chapter gives the details of reagents and instruments used and the procedure adopted for the preparation of ligands and complexes. The third chapter explains the methods employed for characterization and the results are also discussed. The fourth chapter gives a detailed study of metal ion removal using ligands whereas the fifth chapter describes the development of the Cu” ion sensor electrode. The sixth chapter is the summary of the thesis and references are presented at the end.

Carbenes photogenerated from the novel bisdiazirine, 1, 3-bis(3-(trifluoromethyl)diazirin-3-yl) benzene 1, have been applied successfully to cross-linking of mono-methyl poly(ethylene oxide) (MePEO5000) in the presence of dichloromethane, leading to the simultaneous incorporation of alkylhalide functionalities. The PEO-based gels swell in a wide range of solvents with polarity index values varying from 3.1 to 9.0. Reaction of the alkylhalide functionalities present in the gels with 4-phenylazophenol provided loading capacities of up to 0.20 mmol g(-1) and demonstrated the potential of these materials for gel-phase synthesis applications. A range of linear polyurethanes featuring aliphatic, aromatic and ether residues have been prepared by co-polymerisation of novel 'masked' isocyanate A(2)-type monomers and diols. The reactive isocyanate monomers were generated in situ via the triphenylphosphine mediated decomposition of the heterocyclic disulfide, 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-dione. Two different synthetic approaches were examined and assessed for the construction of the novel A(2)-type monomers, which involved either coupling two 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones together through a spacer group or construction of 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones directly from diamines. The resulting polyurethanes were purified via solvent extraction and analysed using GPC, NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses. Molecular weight data were obtained and compared from both GPC and H-1 NMR (via end-group analysis) spectroscopic analysis. The thermal properties of the polyurethanes were determined using DSC and their solubility in common aprotic organic solvents was also assessed and related to their structural composition. A series of fourteen novel pyrrole monomers substituted at the 3-position with aliphatic and aromatic crown-ether moieties have been synthesised in good yield and characterised extensively. Several of these compounds were electropolymerised successfully in acetonitrile, using both potentiostatic and galvanostatic modes and the electrochemical properties of those systems were studied via cyclic voltammetry in aqueous and organic media. Novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives revealed reversible redox couples in LiClO4/CH3CN (0.1 M). The morphology of these novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives was characterised by scanning electron microscopy. These polymers exhibited an open porous structure and half the charge was required when compared to polypyrrole to afford films of equal thickness. The mass change during polymerisation was followed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurement, and the rate of polymer growth was found to be nonlinear when compared to polypyrrole. Novel oxazoline-based comb-polymers possessing linoleyl or oleic side chains have been synthesized and used to produce low viscosity coatings. Inclusion of the polymers in model paint formulations results in coatings that exhibit faster drying times than commercially available alkyd resin formulations. The comb polymers were produced from diol substituted oxazoline monomers that were synthesized through a scalable, solvent free protocol and purified by simple recrystallisation. Co-polymerisation of the oxazolines with adipic acid at 160 °C in the bulk resulted in the targeted polyester comb type polymers. The polymers were soluble in a range of organic solvents and compatible with commercial alkyd resins. Model paint formulations containing up to 40 wt% of the linoleyl-based comb polymers exhibited a dramatic reduction in viscosity (from 35 to 13 Poise at 25 °C) with increasing quantities of polymer added. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) studies revealed that the drying rate of the model paint formulations containing the comb polymers was enhanced when compared with that of commercial alkyd resins.

Polymers blends represent an important approach to obtain materials with modulated properties to reach different and desired properties in designing drug delivery systems in order to fulfill therapeutic needs. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of drug loading and polymer ratio on the physicochemical properties of microparticles of cross-linked high amylose starch-pectin blends loaded with diclofenac for further application in controlled drug delivery systems. Thermal analysis and X-ray diffractograms evidenced the occurrence of drug-polymer interactions and the former pointed also to an increase in thermal stability due to drug loading. The rheological properties demonstrated that drug loading resulted in formation of weaker gels while the increase of pectin ratio contributes to origin stronger structures. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

In the present work, a biosensor was built with smart material based on polymer brushes. The biosensor demonstrated a pH-sensitive on-off property, and it was further used to control or modulate the electrochemical responses of the biosensor. This property could be used to realize pH-controlled electrochemical reaction of hydrogen peroxide and HRP immobilized on polymer brushes. The composite film also showed excellent amperometric i-t response toward hydrogen peroxide in the concentration range of 0-13 μM. In future, this platform might be used for self-regulating targeted diagnostic, drug delivery and biofuel cell based on controllable bioelectrocatalysis. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Polycarbosilanes are a class of polymers at the interface between organic and inorganic chemistry. They are characterized by a high thermal and chemical inertness and high flexibility, especially pronounced for branched structures. Linear polycarbosilanes are well known as precursors for the preparation of SiCx ceramics. Additionally, more sophisticated architectures like dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers or block copolymers have been the subject of research for more than a decade. The scope of this work was to expand the properties and fields of application for polycarbosilane-containing structures. Thus, the work is divided in two major parts. The first part covers the synthesis and characterization of hyperbranched polycarbosilanes containing organometallic moieties. Hyperbranched poly-carbosilanes were synthesized using hydrosilylation of diallylmethylsilane and methyldiundecenylsilane. The degree of branching for polydiallymethylsilane was determined using standard 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The functional building blocks ferrocenyldimethylsilane and diferrocenylmethylsilane were synthesized which contain an isolated ferrocene unit or two ferrocenes bridged by silicon, respectively. Hyperbranched polycarbosilanes functionalized with ferrocenyl moieties were synthesized by modification of preformed polymers or by copolymerization of AB2 carbosilane monomers with AX-type ferrocenylsilanes. Polymers with Mn = 2500-9000g/mol and ferrocene contents of up to 67wt% were obtained. Electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry revealed that polymers functionalized with isolated ferrocene units showed a single reversible oxidation wave, while voltammograms for polymers functionalized with diferrocenyl silane exhibited two well-separated reversible oxidation-reduction waves. This shows that the polymer bound ferrocenes bridged by silicon are electronically communicating and thus oxidation of the first ferrocene shifts the oxidation potential for the adjacent one. The polymers were utilized successfully for the preparation of modified electrodes with persistent and reproducible electrochemical response in organic solvents as well as in aqueous solution. The presented work has proven that ferrocenyl-functionalized hyperbranched polymers exhibit similar electrochemical properties as the analogous dendrimers. In a further approach it was shown that hyperbranched polymers containing organometallic moieties can be synthesized by polymerization of a new ferrocene-containing AB2 monomer - diallylferrocenylsilane. The second part of this work is dedicated to the preparation of core-functional hyperbranched polycarbosilanes. Low molecular weight ambifunctional molecules were synthesized that contain double bonds for the attachment of a polycarbosilane polymer as well as a second functionality available for further reaction and modification. Reactive vinyl groups in the core molecule allow an efficient attachment of hyperbranched polycarbosilane which was proven by MALDI-ToF and GPC. In combination with slow monomer addition techniques molecular weight and polydispersity of the polymers were controlled successfully. Core-functional polymers were characterized by NMR-spectroscopy, MALDI-ToF and GPC. Polymers with polydispersities <2 and molecular weights up to 5300g/mol were obtained. Transformation of the double bonds of the carbosilane was demonstrated with various silanes using hydrosilylation reaction or hydrogenation. Additionally, the core-functionality was varied resulting in polymers with bromo-, phthalimide-, amine- or azide moieties. Thus, a versatile synthetic strategy was developed that allows the synthesis of tailor-made polymers.A promising approach is the application of the polymer building blocks in copolymer synthesis. Bisglycidolization of amine-functional polycarbosilanes produces macro-initiators that are suitable for the multibranching-ring opening polymerization of glycidol. This experiments lead to the first example of hyperbranched-hyperbranched amphiphilic block copolymers, hb-PG-b-hb-PCS. Furthermore, the implementation of copper-catalyzed cycloaddition between azide-functional polycarbosilane and alkyne-functional poly(ethoxyethyl glycidylether) resulted in linear-hyperbranched block copolymers. The facile removal of acetal protecting groups provided convenient access to lin-PG-b-hb-PCS.

Among hyperbranched polymers, polyglycerol is one of the most promising and commonly used macromolecules due to its biocompatibility and versatility. However, the synthesis of high molecular weight polyglycerols still involves many intricacies and has only been understood to a limited extent. Furthermore, only few complex structures like star or block copolymers incorporating polyglycerol have been realized so far. Particularly biocompatible block copolymers are considered promising candidates for biomedical applications.rnThe scope of this thesis was the enhancement of the synthetic process leading to polyglycerol derivatives which implies improved molecular weight control for a broad molecular weight range as well as the assembly of more complex structures like amphiphilic block copolymers. Further insight into the relation between reaction solvent, degree of deprotonation during the ring-opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol and the characteristics of the obtained polymers were achieved within the scope of this work. Based on these results, a novel concept for the preparation of hyperbranched polyglycerols with molecular weights up to 20,000 g/mol was developed, applying a two step synthesis pathway. Starting from a partially deprotonated TMP core, low molecular weight hb-PGs were prepared using the known synthetic protocol that has been established since the late 1990ies. In a subsequent reaction sequence, these well defined polymers were used as hyperbranched macroinitiator cores in order to obtain high molecular weight hb-PGs with remarkably low polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.8). Molecular weight control was shown to be excellent and undesired low molecular weight side products were absent. Furthermore, the technique of continuous spin fractionation has been discovered as an efficient method for polyglycerol work-up to remove quantitatively residual monomer- and oligomer traces from hb-PG compositions to result in samples with significantly reduced polydispersities. Based on these results the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers containing hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol blocks and linear, apolar poly(propylene oxide) blocks has been significantly improved and augmented to hb-PG-b-l-PPO-b-hb-PG ABA block copolymers. The influence of different polyglycerol-based amphiphiles on the fibril formation was studied by Thioflavin T Fluorescence showing remarkable increasing lag times which is promising in order to enhance the stability of this protein. In addition the first synthesis of poly(glyceryl glycerols) (PGG), introducing a new solketyl glycidyl ether monomer (IGG) was shown. It was furthermore demonstrated that core-functional carbosilane wedges allow application in block copolymer synthesis. Bisglycidolized amine functional polymers were successfully employed as macroinitiators for glycidol polymerization. This resulted in the first example of amphiphilic hyperbranched-hyperbranched polymer structures. Finally, it has been shown that the previously reported synthetic pathway to carboxylated hyperbranched polyglycerol polyelectrolytes can also be applied for the amphiphilic linear-hyperbranched block copolymers. These novel biocompatible and highly amphiphilic polyelectrolytes offer great potential for further investigations. rnrn

In this thesis, different complex colloids were prepared by the process of solvent evaporation from emulsion droplets (SEED). The term “complex” is used to include both an addressable functionality as well as the heterogeneous nature of the colloids.Firstly, as the SEED process was used throughout the thesis, its mechanism especially in regard to coalescence was investigated,. A wide variety of different techniques was employed to study the coalescence of nanodroplets during the evaporation of the solvent. Techniques such as DLS or FCS turned out not to be suitable methods to determine droplet coalescence because of their dependence on dilution. Thus, other methods were developed. TEM measurements were conducted on mixed polymeric emulsions with the results pointing to an absence of coalescence. However, these results were not quantifiable. FRET measurements on mixed polymeric emulsions also indicated an absence of coalescence. Again the results were not quantifiable. The amount of coalescence taking place was then quantified by the application of DC-FCCS. This method also allowed for measuring coalescence in other processes such as the miniemulsion polymerization or the polycondensation reaction on the interface of the droplets. By simulations it was shown that coalescence is not responsible for the usually observed broad size distribution of the produced particles. Therefore, the process itself, especially the emulsification step, needs to be improved to generate monodisperse colloids.rnThe Janus morphology is probably the best known among the different complex morphologies of nanoparticles. With the help of functional polymers, it was possible to marry click-chemistry to Janus particles. A large library of functional polymers was prepared by copolymerization and subsequent post-functionalization or by ATRP. The polymers were then used to generate Janus particles by the SEED process. Both dually functionalized Janus particles and particles with one functionalized face could be obtained. The latter were used for the quantification of functional groups on the surface of the Janus particles. For this, clickable fluorescent dyes were synthesized. The degree of functionality of the polymers was found to be closely mirrored in the degree of functionality of the surface. Thus, the marriage of click-chemistry to Janus particles was successful.Another complex morphology besides Janus particles are nanocapsules. Stimulus-responsive nanocapsules that show triggered release are a highly demanding and interesting system, as nanocapsules have promising applications in drug delivery and in self-healing materials. To achieve heterogeneity in the polymer shell, the stimulus-responsive block copolymer PVFc-b-PMMA was employed for the preparation of the capsules. The phase separation of the two blocks in the shell of the capsules led to a patchy morphology. These patches could then be oxidized resulting in morphology changes. In addition, swelling occurred because of the hydrophobic to hydrophilic transition of the patches induced by the oxidation. Due to the swelling, an encapsulated payload could diffuse out of the capsules, hence release was achieved. The concept of using block copolymers responsive to one stimulus for the preparation of stimulus-responsive capsules was extended to block copolymers responsive to more than one stimulus. Here, a block copolymer responsive to oxidation and a pH change as well as a block copolymer responsive to a pH change and temperature were studied in detail. The release from the nanocapsules could be regulated by tuning the different stimuli. In addition, by encapsulating stimuli-responsive payloads it was possible to selectively release a payload upon one stimulus but not upon the other one.In conclusion, the approaches taken in the course of this thesis demonstrate the broad applicability and usefulness of the SEED process to generate complex colloids. In addition, the experimental techniques established such as DC-FCCS will provide further insight into other research areas as well.
