We describe the fabrication of a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator in LiNbO3 by femtosecond laser micormachining, which is composed of optical waveguides inscripted by a femtosecond laser and embedded microelectrodes subsequently using femtosecond laser ablation and selective electroless plating. A half-wave voltage close to 19 V is achieved at a wavelength of 632.8 nm with an interaction length of 2.6 mm. This simple and cost-effective technique opens up new opportunities for fabricating integrated electro-optic devices. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

We present a novel technique to fabricate deeply embedded microelectrodes in LiNbO3 using femtosecond pulsed laser ablation and selective electroless plating. The fabrication process mainly consists of four steps, which are (1) micromachining of microgrooves on the surface of LiNbO3 by femtosecond laser ablation; (2) formation of AgNO3 films on substrates; (3) scanning the femtosecond laser beam in the fabricated microgrooves for modi. cation of the inner surfaces; and (4) electroless copper plating. The void-free electroless copper plating is obtained with appropriate cross section of microgrooves and uniform initiation of the autocatalytic deposition on the inner surface of grooves. The dimension and shape of the microelectrodes could be accurately controlled by changing the conditions of femtosecond laser ablation, which in turn can control the distribution of electric field inside LiNbO3 crystal for various applications, opening up a new approach to fabricate three-dimensional integrated electro-optic devices. We investigate the mechanism of selective metallization on glass surfaces with the assistance of femtosecond laser irradiation followed by electroless plating. Irradiation of femtosecond laser makes it possible to selectively deposit copper microstructures in the irradiated area on glass surfaces coated with silver nitrate films. The energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses reveal that silver atoms are produced on the surface of grooves formed by laser ablation, which serve as catalysis seeds for subsequent electroless copper plating. We report selective metallization on surfaces of insulators ( glass slides and lithium niobate crystal) based on femtosecond laser modification combined with electroless plating. The process is mainly composed of four steps: (1) formation of silver nitrate thin films on the surfaces of glass or crystal substrates; (2) generation of silver particles in the irradiated area by femtosecond laser direct writing; (3) removal of unirradiated silver nitrate films; and (4) selective electroless plating in the modified area. We discuss the mechanism of selective metallization on the insulators. Moreover, we investigate the electrical and adhesive properties of the copper microstructures patterned on the insulator surfaces, showing great potential of integrating electrical functions into lab-on-a-chip devices. A palladium membrane has been prepared by electroless plating on the surface of a porous stainless steel tube. Since the large surface pores of the tube are obstacle for preparation of a defect-free palladium film on the surface, zirconium oxide particles were deposited inside the pores. The mean thickness of the resulting Pd membrane on the modified tube was ca. 10 mum. It is suggested that the permeability of hydrogen is partly governed by gas diffusion in the pores. We report a simple procedure to assemble gold nanoparticles into hollow tubular morphology with micrometer scale, wherein the citrate molecule is used not only as a reducing and capping agent, but also as an assembling template. The nanostructure and growth mechanism of microtubes are explored via SEM, TEM, FTIR spectra, and UV-vis spectra studies. The incorporation of larger gold nanoparticles by electroless plating results in an increase in the diameter of microtubes from 900 nm to about 1.2 mu m. The application of the microtubes before and after electroless plating in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is investigated by using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as probe molecules. The results indicate that the microtubes both before and after electroless plating can be used as SERS substrates. The microtubes after electroless plating exhibit excellent enhancement ability.

The fabrication and operation of an ammonia chemoresistor is described. The sensor responds to changes in the resistance (impedance) of a thin layer of conductive polymer is due to changes in ammonia concentration. The polyaniline film was deposited by electroless plating (dipping) method on interdigitated array made by photolithographic technique. The PANI film was characterized by UV/VIS and IR Spectroscopy and respectively, Atomic Force Microscopy. Impedance Spectroscopy was used for sensor characterization
