The oxygen content of La0.5Ca0.5MnOy was tuned by annealing the samples at high temperatures in flowing nitrogen with graphite powder nearby. The reduction of oxygen content has dramatic effect on the electrical transport and magnetic properties. The samples with y=2.983, 2.83, and 2.803 show an insulator-metal transition, and an unusual temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the magnetoresistance. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition also shifts to lower temperatures and the antiferromagnetic transition at lower temperature is suppressed. The results are discussed in terms of the effect of oxygen vacancies on the various properties of La0.5Ca0.5MnOy. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

RATIONALE The ratio of the measured abundance of 13C18O bonding CO2 to its stochastic abundance, prescribed by the delta 13C and delta 18O values from a carbonate mineral, is sensitive to its growth temperature. Recently, clumped-isotope thermometry, which uses this ratio, has been adopted as a new tool to elucidate paleotemperatures quantitatively. METHODS Clumped isotopes in CO2 were measured with a small-sector isotope ratio mass spectrometer. CO2 samples digested from several kinds of calcium carbonates by phosphoric acid at 25 degrees C were purified using both cryogenic and gas-chromatographic separations, and their isotopic composition (delta 13C, delta 18O, Delta 47, Delta 48 and Delta 49 values) were then determined using a dual-inlet Delta XP mass spectrometer. RESULTS The internal precisions of the single gas Delta 47 measurements were 0.005 and 0.02 parts per thousand (1 SE) for the optimum and the routine analytical conditions, respectively, which are comparable with those obtained using a MAT 253 mass spectrometer. The long-term variations in the Delta 47 values for the in-house working standard and the heated CO2 gases since 2007 were close to the routine, single gas uncertainty while showing seasonal-like periodicities with a decreasing trend. Unlike the MAT 253, the Delta XP did not show any significant relationship between the Delta 47 and delta 47 values. CONCLUSIONS The Delta XP gave results that were approximately as precise as those of the MAT 253 for clumped-isotope analysis. The temporal stability of the Delta XP seemed to be lower, although an advantage of the Delta XP was that no dependency of delta 47 on Delta 47 was found. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This study reports a multinuclei in situ (real-time) NMR spectroscopic characterization of the electrochemical reactions of a negative Cu3P electrode toward lithium. Taking advantage of the different nuclear spin characteristics, we have obtained real-time P-31 and Li-7 NMR data for a comprehensive understanding of the electrochemical mechanism during the discharge and charge processes of a lithium battery. The large NMR chemical shift span of P-31 facilitates the observation of the chemical evolutions of different lithiated and delithiated LixCu3-xP phases, whereas the quadrupolar line features in Li-7 enable identification of asymmetric Li sites. These combined NMR data offer an unambiguous identification of four distinct LixCu3-xP phases, Cu3P, Li0.2Cu2.8P, Li2CuP, and. Li3P, and the characterization of their involvement in the electrochemical reactions. The NMR data led us to propose a delithiation process involving the intercalation of metallic Cu-0 atomic aggregates into the Li2CuP structure to form a Cu-0-Li2-xCu1-xP phase. This process might be responsible for the poor capacity retention in Cu3P lithium batteries when cycled to a low voltage.

In order to further investigate nanoindentation data of film-substrate systems and to learn more about the mechanical properties of nanometer film-substrate systems, two kinds of films on different substrate systems have been tested with a systematic variation in film thickness and substrate characteristics. The two kinds of films are aluminum and tungsten, which have been sputtered on to glass and silicon substrates, respectively. Indentation experiments were performed with a Nano Indent XP II with indenter displacements typically about two times the nominal film thicknesses. The resulting data are analyzed in terms of load-displacement curves and various comparative parameters, such as hardness, Young's modulus, unloading stiffness and elastic recovery. Hardness and Young's modulus are investigated when the substrate effects are considered. The results show how the composite hardness and Young's modulus are different for different substrates, different films and different film thicknesses. An assumption of constant Young's modulus is used for the film-substrate system, in which the film and substrate have similar Young's moduli. Composite hardness obtained by the Joslin and Oliver method is compared with the directly measured hardness obtained by the Oliver and Pharr method.

The Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) technique possesses great potential in monitoring widely exiting industrial two/multi-phase flow. For vertical pipe flow and inclined pipe flow, some application studies with exciting results have been reported, but there is rarely a paper regarding the application of ERT to horizontal gas/liquid pipe flow. This paper addresses this issue and proposes a smart method, Liquid Level Detection method, to conventional ERT system. The enhanced ERT system using the new method can monitor horizontal pipe flow effectively and its application is no longer restricted by the flow conditions. Some experimental results from monitoring an air/water slug pipe flow are presented.

A new area function is introduced and applied to a Berkovich tip in order to characterize the contact projected area between an indenter and indented material. The function can be related directly to tip-rounding, thereby having obviously physical meaning. Nanoindentation experiments are performed on a commercial Nano Indenter XPsystem. The other two area functions introduced by Oliver and Pharr and by Thurn and Cook respectively are involved in this paper for comparison. By comparison from experimental results among different area functions, the indenter tip described by the proposed area function here is very close to the experimental indenter.

It is demonstrated that when tension leg platform (TLP) moves with finite amplitude in waves, the inertia force, the drag force and the buoyancy acting on the platform are nonlinear functions of the response of TLP. The tensions of the tethers are also nonlinear functions of the displacement of TLP. Then the displacement, the velocity and the acceleration of TLP should be taken into account when loads are calculated. In addition, equations of motions should be set up on the instantaneous position. A theoretical model for analyzing the nonlinear behavior of a TLP with finite displacement is developed, in which multifold nonlinearities are taken into account, i.e., finite displacement, coupling of the six degrees of freedom, instantaneous position, instantaneous wet surface, free surface effects and viscous drag force. Based on the theoretical model, the comprehensive nonlinear differential equations are deduced. Then the nonlinear dynamic analysis of ISSC TLP in regular waves is performed in the time domain. The degenerative linear solution of the proposed nonlinear model is verified with existing published one. Furthermore, numerical results are presented, which illustrate that nonlinearities exert a significant influence on the dynamic responses of the TLP.

The transition process of intermittent flow in a longitudinal section of Bingham fluid from initial distribution to fully developed state was numerically investigated in this paper. The influences of slope dimensionless runoff Q* and viscosity μ0* on the dimensionless surge speed U* were also presented in a wide range of parameters. By one typical example, the intermittent flow possessed wave characteristics and showed a supercritical flow conformation for a fully developed flow. The distributions of gravity and bed drag along the flow path and the velocity distribution of flow field were also analyzed.

El trabajo se realizó en el periodo comprendido entre Febrero y Junio de 1995 en la Estación Experimental "Raúl González" del Valle de Sébaco, Matagalpa El ANDEVA realizado a los cultivares evaluados demostró que la mayoría de las variables medidas presentaron diferencias significativas entre sí. En cuanto a la floración y fructificación la mayor precocidad la presentaron los cultivares Criolla a los 24 y 34 días después del transplante (ddt), y XP-789 a los 26 y 37 días después del transplante. Respecto a los rendimientos comerciales el cultivar XP-789 produjo los valores más altos en las dos cosechas con 2,713.6 y 1,815.7 kg/ha. Además mostró el mayor rendimiento total con 5083 kg/ha; las mayores pérdidas las presentaron los cultivares Yolo Wonder con 71.73%, seguido por Criolla y XP-789 con 57.24 y 41.42%, respectivamente. La matriz de correlación realizada, se obtuvo correlaciones positivas desde el punto de vista fenotlpico entre los carácteres altura de planta con diámetro del tallo, ancho de la hoja, largo de la hoja, asi mismo, el diámetro del tallo tuvo correlación con largo y ancho de la hoja. La correlación entre los componentes del rendimiento presentaron correlaciones positivas entre número total de frutos malos y rendimiento de frutos buenos. La incidencia de plagas en el cultivo, todos los cultivares fueron afectados en las diferentes fechas en que se realizaron los recuentos, encontrándose una mayor incidencia en el cultivar Maccabi tanto para mosca blanca (Bemicia tabaci G.) como para picudo (Anthonomus eugenii C.). El cultivar Tainong obtuvo la menor incidencia de picudo y de mosca blanca.

The deposition of CdO center dot nH(2)O On CdTe nanoparticles was studied in an aqueous phase. The CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) were prepared in aqueous solution through the reaction between Cd2+ and NaHTe in the presence of thioglycolic acid as a stabilizer. The molar ratio of the Cd2+ to Te2- in the precursory solution played an important role in the photoluminescence of the ultimate CdTe NCs. The strongest photoluminescence was obtained under 4.0 of [Cd2+]/[Te2-] at pH similar to 8.2. With the optimum dosage of Cd(II) hydrous oxide deposited on the CdTe NCs, the photoluminescence was enhanced greatly. The photoluminescence of these nanocomposites was kept constant in the pH range of 8.0-10.0, but dramatically decreased with an obvious blue-shifted peak while the pH was below 8.0. In addition, the photochemical oxidation of CdTe NCs with cadmium hydrous oxide deposition was markedly inhibited.

Rice et al. (Jounal of Mechanics and Physics of Solids 42, 813-843) analyze the propagation of a planar crack with a nominally straight front in a model elastic solid with a single displacement component. Using the form of Willis er al. (Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 43, 319-341), of dynamic mode I weight functions for a moving crack, we address that problem solved by Rice ei al. in the 3D context of elastodynamic theory. Oscillatory crack tip motion results from constructive-destructive interference of stress intensity waves. Those waves, including system of the dilatational, shear and Rayleigh waves, interact on each other and with moving edge of crack, can lead to continuing fluctuations of the crack front and propagation velocity. In the present paper, the hardness and Young's modulus of film-substrate systems are determined by means of nanoindentation experiments and modified models. Aluminum film and two kinds of substrates; i.e. glass and silicon, are studied. Nanoindentation XP II and continuous stiffness mode are used during the experiments. In order to avoid the influence of the Oliver and Pharr method used in the experiments, the experiment data are analyzed with the constant Young's modulus assumption and the equal hardness assumption. The volume fraction model (CZ model) proposed by Fabes et al. (1992) is used and modified to analyze the measured hardness. The method proposed by Doerner and Nix (DN formula) (1986) is modified to analyze the measured Young's modulus. Two kinds of modified empirical formula are used to predict the present experiment results and those in the literature, which include the results of two kinds of systems, i.e., a soft film on a hard substrate and a hard film on a soft substrate. In the modified CZ model, the indentation influence angle, phi, is considered as a relevant physical parameter, which embodies the effects of the indenter tip radius, pile-up or sink-in phenomena and deformation of film and substrate.

本文分析了文献[1]对阻尼振子所提出的直接的量子化方案,其中引进了对易关系xp—px=ihe~[-(C/M)t]。指出这种方法在推广到C显含时间的情况时将发生困难。为使C显含时间的情况也能统一处理,必须保留海森堡对易关系xp-px=ih,同时假定对振子的作用力中含有与x不对易的部分f_R,并满足对xf_R—f_Rx=ih(C/M)。还具体分析了电子振子。

This paper analyses the transient effect on ideally plastic stationary crack tip fields under mode I plane strain conditions, when the inertial forces are not negligible. It is shown that the governing equation for such a problem can be expressed in formal simplicity when referred to a system of moving curvilinear coordinates, which is a generalization of the system defined by the slip-line field in quasi-static plasticity. A perturbation method of solving the equations is described and illustrated by application to problems of ideally plastic stationary crack tip fields when the inertial forces are not negligible.
