The band offsets in InN/p-Si heterojunctions are determined by high resolution x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The valence band of InN is found to be 1.39 eV below that of Si. Given the bandgap of 0.7 eV for InN, a type-III heterojunction with a conduction band offset of 1.81 eV was found. Agreement between the simulated and experimental data obtained from the heterojunction spectra was found to be excellent, establishing that the method of determination was accurate. The charge neutrality level (CNL) model provided a reasonable description of the band alignment of the InN/p-Si interface and a change in the interface dipole by 0.06 eV was observed for InN/p-Si interface.

In0.2Ga0.8N layers were directly grown on Si(111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Structural characteristics of the as-grown InGaN epilayers were evaluated high resolution X-ray diffraction and composition of InGaN was estimated from photoluminescence spectra using the standard Vegard's law. High-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements were used to determine the band offset of wurtzite-In0.2Ga0.8N/Si(111) heterojunctions. The valence band of InGaN is found to be 2.08 +/- 0.04 eV below that of Si. The conduction band offset (CBO) of InGaN/Si heterojunction is found similar to 0.74 eV and a type-II heterojunction. The valence band structures of Al-N-codoped [ZnO:(Al, N)] and N-doped (ZnO:N) ZnO films were studied by normal and soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The valence-band maximum of ZnO:(Al, N) shifts up to Fermi energy level by about 300 meV compared with that of ZnO:N. Such a shift can be attributed to the existence of a kind of Al-N in ZnO:(Al, N), as supported by core level XPS spectra and comparison of modified Auger parameters. Al-N increased the relative quantity of Zn-N in ZnO:(Al, N), while N-N decreased that of Zn-N in ZnO:N. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

The redox potential, surface composition and oxygen species of a series of complex oxides LaMn1-xFexO3 (x=0-1) having perovskite structure (ABO(3)) have been investigated by means of XI'S. The variation of binding energies referring to Mn2p and Fe 2p under different treatment offerred an obvious evidence of redox between Mn and Fe, which could be expressed as Mn4+ + Fe(3-delta)+ Mn(4-delta)+ Fe3+ Feat Through computer fit three kinds of adsorbed oxygen species (O-I, O-II, O-III) have been evaluated based on the XPS spectra of O1s. From the variation of contents of different oxygen species, it could be concluded that. the redox occuring in the surface might be related with the adsorbed oxygen species O-I and O-II, furthermore the possibility of transfer of electron between adsorption site and oxygen was also discussed.

Thin zirconium nitride films were prepared on Si(l 00) substrates at room temperature by ion beam assisted deposition with a 2 keV nitrogen ion beam. Arrival rate ratios ARR(N/Zr) used were 0.19, 0.39, 0.92, and 1.86. The chemical composition and bonding structure of the films were analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Deconvolution results for Zr 3d, Zr 3p(3/2), N 1s, O 1s, and C 1s XPS spectra indicated self-consistently the presence of metal Zr-0, nitride ZrN, oxide ZrO2, oxymnide Zr2N2O, and carbide ZrC phases, and the amounts of these compounds were influenced by ARR(N/Zr). The chemical composition ratio N/Zr in the film increased with increasing ARR(N/Zr) until ARR(N/Zr) reached 0.92, reflecting the high reactivity of nitrogen in the ion beam, and stayed almost constant for ARR(N/Zr) >= 1, the excess nitrogen being rejected from the growing film. A considerable incorporation of contaminant oxygen and carbon into the depositing film was attributed to the getter effect of zirconium. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Pb1-xLaxTiO3 sintered ferroelectric ceramics with x equal to 0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.30 were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The binding energy of the Ti 2p lines is consistent with only one chemical state, Ti4+. on the other hand, in the case of Pb 4f and 0 Is XPS spectra, apart from the main peaks attributed to the lattice ions, minor peaks related to the surface states were also observed. The presence of Pb-0 state on the surface of all samples was due to the reduction of lead ions caused by the preferential removal of the oxygen ions after sputtering. The non observation of Ti3+ ions confirms that the mechanism of charge compensation that should occurs owing to the substitution of Ph2+ by La3+ is due to the preferential formation of Pb site vacancies, and not to a reduction from Ti4+ to Ti3+ states. Within the limits of the present experiment, there is no evidence of the existence of non-equivalent Pb, Ti, and La sites as the Pb1-xLaxTiO3 ceramic changes from a normal to a relaxor ferroelectric state. Glasses in the system xGeO(2)-(1-x)NaPO3 (0 <= x <= 0.50) were prepared by conventional melting quenching and characterized by thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. The deconvolution of the latter spectra was aided by homonuclear J-resolved and refocused INADEQUATE techniques. The combined analyses of P-31 MAS NMR and O-1s XPS lineshapes, taking charge and mass balance considerations into account, yield the detailed quantitative speciations of the phosphorus, germanium, and oxygen atoms and their respective connectivities. An internally consistent description is possible without invoking the formation of higher-coordinated germanium species in these glasses, in agreement with experimental evidence in the literature. The structure can be regarded, to a first approximation, as a network consisting of P-(2) and P-(3) tetrahedra linked via four-coordinate germanium. As implied by the appearance of P-(3) units, there is a moderate extent of network modifier sharing between phosphate and germanate network formers, as expressed by the formal melt reaction P-(2) + Ge-(4) -> P-(3) + Ge-(3). The equilibrium constant of this reaction is estimated as K = 0.52 +/- 0.11, indicating a preferential attraction of network modifier by the phosphorus component. These conclusions are qualitatively supported by Raman spectroscopy as well as P-31{Na-23} and P-31{Na-23} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR results. The combined interpretation of O-1s XPS and P-31 MAS NMR spectra shows further that there are clear deviations from a random connectivity scenario: heteroatomic P-O-Ge linkages are favored over homoatomic P-O-P and Ge-O-Ge linkages.

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) is one of the most universal and powerful tools for investigation of chemical states and electronic structures of materials. The application of hard x-rays increases the inelastic mean free path of the emitted electrons within the solid and thus makes hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) a bulk sensitive probe for solid state research and especially a very effective nondestructive technique to study buried layers.rnThis thesis focuses on the investigation of multilayer structures, used in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), by a number of techniques applying HAXPES. MTJs are the most important components of novel nanoscale devices employed in spintronics. rnThe investigation and deep understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the high performance of such devices and properties of employed magnetic materials that are, in turn, defined by their electronic structure becomes feasible applying HAXPES. Thus the process of B diffusion in CoFeB-based MTJs was investigated with respect to the annealing temperature and its influence on the changes in the electronic structure of CoFeB electrodes that clarify the behaviour and huge TMR ratio values obtained in such devices. These results are presented in chapter 6. The results of investigation of the changes in the valence states of buried off-stoichiometric Co2MnSi electrodes were investigated with respect to the Mn content α and its influence on the observed TMR ratio are described in chapter 7.rnrnMagnetoelectronic properties such as exchange splitting in ferromagnetic materials as well as the macroscopic magnetic ordering can be studied by magnetic circular dichroism in photoemission (MCDAD). It is characterized by the appearance of an asymmetry in the photoemission spectra taken either from the magnetized sample with the reversal of the photon helicity or by reversal of magnetization direction of the sample when the photon helicity direction is fixed. Though recently it has been widely applied for the characterization of surfaces using low energy photons, the bulk properties have stayed inaccessible. Therefore in this work this method was integrated to HAXPES to provide an access to exploration of magnetic phenomena in the buried layers of the complex multilayer structures. Chapter 8 contains the results of the MCDAD measurements employing hard x-rays for exploration of magnetic properties of the common CoFe-based band-ferromagnets as well as half-metallic ferromagnet Co2FeAl-based MTJs.rnrnInasmuch as the magnetoresistive characteristics in spintronic devices are fully defined by the electron spins of ferromagnetic materials their direct measurements always attracted much attention but up to date have been limited by the surface sensitivity of the developed techniques. Chapter 9 presents the results on the successfully performed spin-resolved HAXPES experiment using a spin polarimeter of the SPLEED-type on a buried Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 magnetic layer. The measurements prove that a spin polarization of about 50 % is retained during the transmission of the photoelectrons emitted from the Fe 2p3/2 state through a 3-nm-thick oxide capping layer.rn

Pt ions-CeO2 interaction in Ce1-xPtxO2-delta (x=0.02) has been studied for the first time by electrochemical method combined with x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Working electrodes made of CeO2 and Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta mixed with 30% carbon are treated electrochemically between 0.0-1.2 V in potentiostatic (chronoamperometry) and potentiodynamic (cyclic voltametry) mode with reference to saturated calomel electrode. Reversible oxidation of Pt-0 to Pt2+ and Pt4+ state due to the applied positive potential is coupled to simultaneous reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ state. CeO2 reduces to CeO2-y (y=0.35) after applying 1.2 V, which is not reversible; Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta reaches a steady state with Pt2+:Pt4+ in the ratio of 0.60:0.40 and Ce4+:Ce3+ in the ratio of 0.55:0.45 giving a composition Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.74 at 1.2 V, which is reversible. Composition of Pt ion substituted compound is reversible between Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.95 to Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.74 within the potential range of 0.0-1.2 V. Thus, Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta forms a stable electrode for oxidation of H2O to O-2 unlike CeO2. A linear relation between oxidation of Pt2+ to Pt4+ with simultaneous reduction in Ce4+ to Ce3+ is observed demonstrating Pt-CeO2 metal support interaction is due to reversible Pt-0/Pt2+/Pt4+ interaction with Ce4+/Ce3+ redox couple.

X-ra!. K-absorption spectra of niobium in niobium dichalcogenides. namely NbS, and NbSe, and their first-row transition-metal intercalates Mi P 3N bSz (M = Cr. Mn. Fe. Co. Ni) and Ml#,NbSe2 (M = Fe. CO). have been measured together with those in niobium metal. The spectra of these materials are \er? similar to one another. They reflect the transitions to the partially filled niobium d band with some p character. A bariety of x-ray absorption nearedge structures (XASES) associated with the K edges of intercalated atoms are also presented and discussed.

Surface oxidation of the metallic glass Fe40Ni38Mo4B18 has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The oxidation behaviour of the metallic glass has been compared with a crystallized sample of the same composition. A similar study has been carried out on the metallic glass Ni76Si12B12,which shows the importance of chemical composition in determining the surface oxidation behaviour of these alloys.

X-ray photoelectron and Auger spectroscopic techniques have been employed to study surface segregation and oxidation of Cu-1 at%Sn, Cu-9at%Pd and Cu-25at%Pd alloys. Both Cu-Pd(9%) and Cu-Pd(25%) alloys show segregation of Cu when heated above 500 K. The Pd concentration was reduced by 50% at 750 K compared to the bulk composition; the enthalpy of segregation of Cu is around - 6kJ/mol. Sn segregation is seen from 470 to 650 K in the Cu-Sn(1%) alloy, and a saturation plateau of Sn concentration above 650 K is observed. Surface oxidation of Cu-Sn(1%) and Cu-Pd(9%) alloys at 500 K showed the formation of Cu2O on the surface with total suppression of Sn or Pd on the respective alloy surfaces. On vacuum annealing the oxidised Cu-Sn alloy surface at 550 K, a displacement reaction 2Cu2O+Sn→4Cu+SnO2 was observed. However, under similar annealing of the oxidised Cu-Pd(9%) alloy surface at 500 K, oxide oxygen was totally desorbed leaving the Cu-Pd alloy surface clean. In the case of the Cu-Pd(25%) alloy, only dissociatively chemisorbed oxygen was seen at 500 K which desorbed at the same temperature. Oxygen spill-over from copper to palladium is suggested as the mechanism of oxygen desorption from the oxidised Cu-Pd alloy surfaces.

XPS studies show that the presence of chemisorbed chlorine stabilizes and also enhances molecular dioxygen species on Ag surfaces dosed with either K or Ba. The surface atomic oxygen is found to become depleted on chlorination. The variation in the nature of surface species with respect to temperature shows chlorine-induced diffusion of atomic oxygen into the subsurface region at 300 K. For coverages of potassium up to 8 × 1014 atoms/cm2, preferential chloridation of Ag occurs while at higher potassium coverages, KCl formation is distinctly observed on the surface. In the case of barium, two types of adsorbed chlorine species, Cl(α) and Cl(β), associated with Ag and Ba, respectively, are clearly seen even at low barium coverages. This is believed to be due to the higher valence occupation of barium compared to potassium. The Cl(α) species associated with Ag is found to occupy a preferred site on both K- and Ba-dosed surfaces, involving chemisorptive replacement of O(α) to the subsurface region.

X-ray LIII-absorption edges of platinum in nine octahedral complexes have been recorded using a bent crystal spectrograph. The edge features of the discontinuities have been interpreted with the help of qualitative molecular orbital diagrams. A correlation between the energy separation of the first two absorption maxima and the spectrochemical series of the ligands has been arrived at.
