The politics of the new Germany

The Politics of the New Germany takes a new approach to understanding politics in the post-unification Federal Republic. Assuming only elementary knowledge, it focuses on debates and issues in order to help students understand both the workings of Germany's key institutions and some of the key policy challenges facing German politicians. Written in a straightforward style by four experts, each of the chapters draws on a rich variety of real-world examples. Packed with boxed summaries of key points, a guide to further reading and a range of seminar questions for discussion at the end of each chapter, this book highlights both the challenges and opportunities facing policy-makers in such areas as foreign affairs, economic policy, immigration, identity politics and institutional reforms. The book also takes a bird's-eye view of the big debates that define German politics over time, regardless of which party happens to be in power. Walter, Greta and Karl Loewenstein Collection. 1821-2004 Bulk: 1933-1989

This collection holds papers of members of the Loewenstein family, especially Walter and Karl Loewenstein. Among the papers here are examples of Walter Loewenstein's writing, documentation of life in Rietberg in Westphalia (Germany) during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and correspondence concerning the fate of several family members during this time. Papers relating to Karl Loewenstein focus on his wartime activities. The genealogy of the Brandenstein family is also represented here along with a few papers of other family members. The collection consists of unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, official and restitution documentation, notebooks and notes, genealogical research, and fliers.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo realizar un balance de la política exterior de Raúl Alfonsín (1983-1989). Dicho análisis se sustentará en una contextualización histórica de su acción externa, en los fundamentos y creencias que sostuvieron su acción internacional y en sus objetivos principales. La reconstrucción en este punto de la investigación se basa especialmente en fuentes bibliográficas, dado que forma parte de los aspectos teóricos de un análisis más amplio, que incluye un análisis de casos de dicho período.

Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario records, 1948-1989

The Act to establish the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (APEO) was passed on June 14, 1922. The creation of the APEO was part of a larger movement in Canada to license the engineering profession. At first, membership in the APEO was not mandatory in order to work as an engineer, but this changed in 1937 when the Professional Engineers Act was amended so that licensing by the APEO was required. In 1945, the initials “P. Eng.” were adopted by the APEO as the official abbreviation of the professional engineer. Many other amendments have been made over the years in order to strengthen the APEO’s ability to regulate the profession. Members of the APEO must also abide by a Code of Ethics, which emphasizes the regard for public welfare as paramount. There are currently 36 chapters of the APEO. In 1993, the APEO’s name was changed to Professional Engineers of Ontario, in part to emphasize the group’s role as a licensing body for engineers as opposed to an association of member engineers.

Marcas da política da administração popular, na prefeitura de Porto Alegre, de 1989 a 2002

Este trabalho trata de identificar a presença de uma marca da política na Administração Popular, através das estruturas e ações de Comunicação da Frente Popular, sob a hegemonia do Partido dos Trabalhadores, na Prefeitura Municipal de Porto Alegre, de 1989 a 2002. As marcas da política são os produtos e as obras da luta pela visibilidade, e seu campo de ação está na totalidade de suas comunicações, sintetizadas graficamente em uma logomarca. Os governos da Frente Popular, com o PT, em Porto Alegre, imprimiram uma marca, e esta a cada gestão, recebeu ajustes políticos e publicitários. Neste sentido, o estudo abrange as quatro gestões da Administração Popular na cidade: Administração 1 (1989-1992) governantes: Olívio Dutra e Tarso Genro; Administração 2 (1993-1996) governantes: Tarso Genro e Raul Pont; Administração 3 (1997-2000) governantes: Raul Pont e José Fortunati; Administração 4 (2001-2002) governantes: Tarso Genro e João Verle, e (2002-2004) governante João Verle. São analisadas as diferentes apresentações visuais e simbólicas da Administração Popular, suas logomarcas, a partir da compreensão da marca como signo ideológico.
