The electronic states of quantum rings with centerlines of arbitrary shape and non-uniform width in a threading magnetic field are calculated. The solutions of the Schrodinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions are obtained by a variational separation of variables in curvilinear coordinates. We obtain a width profile that compensates for the main effects of the curvature variations in the centerline. Numerical results are shown for circular, elliptical, and limacon-shaped quantum rings. We also show that smooth and tiny variations in the width may strongly affect the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.

This work reports the investigation on the structural differences between InAs quantum rings and their precursor quantum dots species as well as on the presence of piezoelectric fields and asymmetries in these nanostructures. The experimental results show significant reduction in the ring dimensions when the sizes of capped and uncapped ring and dot samples are compared. The iso-lattice parameter mapped by grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction has revealed the lateral extent of strained regions in the buried rings. A comparison between strain and composition of dot and ring structures allows inferring on how the ring formation and its final configuration may affect optical response parameters. Based on the experimental observations, a discussion has been introduced on the effective potential profile to emulate theoretically the ring-shape confinement. The effects of confinement and strain field modulation on electron and hole band structures are simulated by a multiband k.p calculation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. In this thesis, three different types of quantum rings arestudied. These are quantum rings with diamagnetic,paramagnetic or spontaneous persistent currents. It turns out that the main observable to characterizequantum rings is the Drude weight. Playing a key role inthis thesis, it will be used to distinguish betweendiamagnetic (positive Drude weight) and paramagnetic(negative Drude weight) ring currents. In most models, theDrude weight is positive. Especially in the thermodynamiclimit, it is positive semi-definite. In certain modelshowever, intuitivelysurprising, a negative Drude weight is found. This rareeffect occurs, e.g., in one-dimensional models with adegenerate ground state in conjunction with the possibilityof Umklapp scattering. One aim of this thesis is to examineone-dimensional quantum rings for the occurrence of anegative Drude weight. It is found, that the sign of theDrude weight can also be negative, if the band structurelacks particle-hole symmetry. The second aim of this thesis is the modeling of quantumrings intrinsically showing a spontaneous persistentcurrent. The construction of the model starts from theextended Hubbard model on a ring threaded by anAharonov-Bohm flux. A feedback term through which thecurrent in the ring can generate magnetic flux is added.Another extension of the Hamiltonian describes the energystored in the internally generated field. This model isevaluated using exact diagonalization and an iterativescheme to find the minima of the free energy. The quantumrings must satisfy two conditions to exhibit a spontaneousorbital magnetic moment: a negative Drude weight and aninductivity above the critical level. The magneticproperties of cyclic conjugated hydrocarbons likebenzene due to electron delocalization [magnetic anisotropy,magnetic susceptibility exaltation, nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS)]---that have become important criteriafor aromaticity---can be examined using this model. Corrections to the presented calculations are discussed. Themost substantial simplification made in this thesis is theneglect of the Zeeman interaction of the electron spins withthe magnetic field. If a single flux tube threads a quantumring, the Zeeman interaction is zero, but in mostexperiments, this situation is difficult to realize. In themore realistic situation of a homogeneous field, the Zeemaninteraction has to be included, if the electrons have atotal spin component in the direction of the magnetic field,or if the magnetic field is strong.

This thesis presents ab initio studies of two kinds of physical systems, quantum dots and bosons, using two program packages of which the bosonic one has mainly been developed by the author. The implemented models, \emph{i.e.}, configuration interaction (CI) and coupled cluster (CC) take the correlated motion of the particles into account, and provide a hierarchy of computational schemes, on top of which the exact solution, within the limit of the single-particle basis set, is obtained. The theory underlying the models is presented in some detail, in order to provide insight into the approximations made and the circumstances under which they hold. Some of the computational methods are also highlighted. In the final sections the results are summarized. The CI and CC calculations on multiexciton complexes in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots are presented and compared, along with radiative and non-radiative transition rates. Full CI calculations on quantum rings and double quantum rings are also presented. In the latter case, experimental and theoretical results from the literature are re-examined and an alternative explanation for the reported photoluminescence spectra is found. The boson program is first applied on a fictitious model system consisting of bosonic electrons in a central Coulomb field for which CI at the singles and doubles level is found to account for almost all of the correlation energy. Finally, the boson program is employed to study Bose-Einstein condensates confined in different anisotropic trap potentials. The effects of the anisotropy on the relative correlation energy is examined, as well as the effect of varying the interaction potential.}

We investigate theoretically electron spin states in one-dimensional and two-dimensional (2D) hard-wall mesoscopic rings in the presence of both the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (DSOI) in a perpendicular magnetic field. The Hamiltonian of the RSOI alone is mathematically equivalent to that of the DSOI alone using an SU(2) spin rotation transformation. Our theoretical results show that the interplay between the RSOI and DSOI results in an effective periodic potential, which consequently leads to gaps in the energy spectrum. This periodic potential also weakens and smoothens the oscillations of the persistent charge current and spin current and results in the localization of electrons. For a 2D ring with a finite width, higher radial modes destroy the periodic oscillations of persistent currents.

In the framework of effective mass envelope function theory, the electronic states of the InAs/GaAs quantum ring are studied. Our model can be used to calculate the electronic states of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. In calculations, the effects due to the different effective masses of electrons in rings and out rings are included. The energy levels of the electron are calculated in the different shapes of rings. The results indicate that the inner radius of rings sensitively changes the electronic states. The energy levels of the electron are not sensitively dependent on the outer radius for large rings. If decreasing the inner and outer radii simultaneously, one may increase the energy spacing between energy levels and keep the ground state energy level unchanged. If changing one of two radii (inner or outer radius), the ground state energy level and the energy spacing will change simultaneously. These results are useful for designing and fabricating the double colors detector by intraband and interband translations. The single electron states are useful for studying the electron correlations and the effects of magnetic fields in quantum rings. Our calculated results are consistent with the recent experimental data of nanoscopic semiconductor rings. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Both spin and orbital degrees of freedom contribute to the magnetic moment of isolated atoms. However, when inserted in crystals, atomic orbital moments are quenched because of the lack of rotational symmetry that protects them when isolated. Thus, the dominant contribution to the magnetization of magnetic materials comes from electronic spin. Here we show that nanoislands of quantum spin Hall insulators can host robust orbital edge magnetism whenever their highest occupied Kramers doublet is singly occupied, upgrading the spin edge current into a charge current. The resulting orbital magnetization scales linearly with size, outweighing the spin contribution for islands of a few nm in size. This linear scaling is specific of the Dirac edge states and very different from Schrodinger electrons in quantum rings. By modeling Bi(111) flakes, whose edge states have been recently observed, we show that orbital magnetization is robust with respect to disorder, thermal agitation, shape of the island, and crystallographic direction of the edges, reflecting its topological protection.

Semiconductor nanostructures show many special physical properties associated with quantum confinement effects, and have many applications in the opto-electronic and microelectronic fields. However, it is difficult to calculate their electronic states by the ordinary plane wave or linear combination of atomic orbital methods. In this paper, we review some of our works in this field, including semiconductor clusters, self-assembled quantum dots, and diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dots. In semiconductor clusters we introduce energy bands and effective-mass Hamiltonian of wurtzite structure semiconductors, electronic structures and optical properties of spherical clusters, ellipsoidal clusters, and nanowires. In self-assembled quantum dots we introduce electronic structures and transport properties of quantum rings and quantum dots, and resonant tunneling of 3-dimensional quantum dots. In diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dots we introduce magnetic-optical properties, and magnetic field tuning of the effective g factor in a diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dot. In this work, we present the growth of InAs rings by droplet epitaxy. A complete process from the rings formation to their density saturation has been demonstrated: A morphological evolution with the varying of the indium deposition amount has been, clearly observed. Our results indicate that there, is a critical deposition amount (similar to 1.1 ML) for the indium to form InAs dots before droplets form; there is also a critical deposition amount (similar to 1.4 ML) to form InAs ring, but it is caused by the formation of droplets as the deposition amount increases. The density of the rings saturates when the deposition amount exceeds similar to 3.3 ML; because the adsorbed indium atoms block sites for further adsorption and the following supplied In only contributes to the size increase of In droplets. Still, as the In deposition amount increases, we can find coupled quantum rings. Moreover, the wetting layer properties of these structures are studied by reflectance difference spectroscopy, which shows a complicated evolution with the In amount. Many of the most intriguing quantum effects are observed or could be measured in transport experiments through nanoscopic systems such as quantum dots, wires and rings formed by large molecules or arrays of quantum dots. In particular, the separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom and interference effects have important consequences in the conductivity through these systems. Charge-spin separation was predicted theoretically in one-dimensional strongly inter-acting systems (Luttinger liquids) and, although observed indirectly in several materials formed by chains of correlated electrons, it still lacks direct observation. We present results on transport properties through Aharonov-Bohmrings (pierced by a magnetic flux) with one or more channels represented by paradigmatic strongly-correlated models. For a wide range of parameters we observe characteristic dips in the conductance as a function of magnetic flux which are a signature of spin and charge separation. Interference effects could also be controlled in certain molecules and interesting properties could be observed. We analyze transport properties of conjugated molecules, benzene in particular, and find that the conductance depends on the lead configuration. In molecules with translational symmetry, the conductance can be controlled by breaking or restoring this symmetry, e.g. by the application of a local external potential. These results open the possibility of observing these peculiar physical properties in anisotropic ladder systems and in real nanoscopic and molecular devices.

We have obtained numerically exact results for the spin-related geometric quantum phases that arise in p-type semiconductor ring structures. The interplay between gate-controllable (Rashba) spin splitting and quantum-confinement-induced mixing between hole-spin states causes a much higher sensitivity of magnetoconductance oscillations to external parameters than previously expected. Our results imply a much-enhanced functionality of hole-ring spin-interference devices and shed new light on recent experimental findings.

We investigate quantum vortex ring dynamics at scales smaller than the inter-vortex spacing in quantum turbulence. Through geometrical arguments and high-resolution numerical simulations, we examine the validity of simple estimates for the mean free path and the structure of vortex rings post-reconnection. We find that a large proportion of vortex rings remain coherent objects where approximately 75% of their energy is preserved. This leads us to consider the effectiveness of energy transport in turbulent tangles. Moreover, we show that in low density tangles, appropriate for the ultra-quantum regime, ring emission cannot be ruled out as an important mechanism for energy dissipation. However at higher vortex line densities, typically associated with the quasi-classical regime, loop emission is expected to make a negligible contribution to energy dissipation, even allowing for the fact that our work shows rings can survive multiple reconnection events. Hence the Kelvin wave cascade seems the most plausible mechanism leading to energy dissipation

We show that SiGe islands are transformed into nanoholes and rings by annealing treatments only and without Si capping. Rings are produced by a rapid flash heating at temperatures higher than the melting point of Ge, whereas nanoholes are produced by several minute annealing. The rings are markedly rich in Si with respect to the pristine islands, suggesting that the evolution path from islands to rings is driven by the selective dissolution of Ge occurring at high temperature.
