We present a technique for independently exciting two resonant modes of vibration in a single-crystal silicon bulk mode microresonator using the same electrode configuration through control of the polarity of the DC actuation voltage. Applications of this technique may include built-in temperature compensation by the simultaneous selective excitation of two closely spaced modes that may have different temperature coefficients of resonant frequency. The technique is simple and requires minimum circuit overhead for implementation. The technique is implemented on square plate resonators with quality factors as high as 3.06 × 106. The interpretation of extracellular cues leading to the polarization of intracellular components and asymmetric cell divisions is a fundamental part of metazoan organogenesis. The C. elegans vulva, with its invariant cell lineage and interaction of multiple cell signaling pathways, provides an excellent model for the study of cell polarity within an organized epithelial tissue. Herein I discuss the interaction of Wnt and FGF signaling in controlling vulval cell lineage polarity with emphasis on the posterior-most cell that forms the vulva, P7.p.

The mirror symmetry of the C. elegans vulva is achieved by the opposite division orientation of the vulval precursor cells (VPCs) flanking the axis of symmetry. Opposing Wnt signals control the division patterns of the VPCs by controlling the localization of SYS-1/ β-catenin toward the direction of the Wnt gradient. Multiple Wnt signals, expressed at the axis of symmetry, promote the wild-type, anterior-facing, P7.p orientation, whereas Wnts EGL-20 and CWN-1 from the tail and posterior body wall muscle, respectively, promote the daughter cells of P7.p to face the posterior. EGL-20 acts through a member of the LDL receptor superfamily, LRP-2, along with Ror/CAM-1 and Van Gogh/VANG-1. All three transmembrane proteins control orientation through the localization of the SYS-1.

The Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) pathway acts in concert with LIN-17/Frizzled to regulate the localization of SYS-1. The source of the FGF ligand is the 1° VPC, P6.p, which controls the polarity of the neighboring 2° VPC, P7.p, by signaling through the sex myoblasts (SMs), activating the FGF pathway. The Wnt, cwn-1, is expressed in the posterior body wall muscle of the worm as well as the SMs, making it the only Wnt expressed on the posterior and anterior sides of P7.p at the time of the polarity decision. Both sources of cwn-1 act instructively to influence P7.p polarity in the direction of the Wnt gradient. The FGF pathway leads to the regulation of cwn-1 transcripts in the SMs. These results illustrate the first evidence of the interaction between FGF and Wnt in C. elegans development and vulval cell lineage polarity as well as highlight the promiscuous nature of Wnt signaling within C. elegans.

The structural and morphological characteristics of InAs/GaAs radial nanowire heterostructures were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. It has been found that the radial growth of InAs was preferentially initiated on the { 112 } A sidewalls of GaAs nanowires. This preferential deposition leads to extraordinarily asymmetric InAs/GaAs radial nanowire heterostructures. Such formation of radial nanowire heterostructures provides an opportunity to engineer hierarchical nanostructures, which further widens the potential applications of semiconductor nanostructures. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We report an effective and nondestructive method based on circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) to detect the lattice polarity of InN. Because of the lattice inversion between In- and N-polar InN, the energy band spin splitting is opposite for InN films with different polarities. Consequently under light irradiation with the same helicity, CPGE photocurrents in In- and N-polar layers will have opposite directions, thus the polarity can be detected. This method is demonstrated by our CPGE measurements in both n- and p-type InN films.

The intensity of the N K edge in electron energy-loss spectra from a GaN thin film shows a pronounced difference when the orientation of the film approaches the (0002) and (000-2) Bragg reflections, along the polar direction. This experimental result can be interpreted by the effect associated with interference between the Bloch waves of the incident electron in the GaN crystal. The theoretical calculations indicate that, at the Bragg condition of g=0002 along the Ga-N bond direction, the thickness-averaged electron current density on the N atom plane is much higher than that at g=000 (2) over bar, with a maximum as the specimen thickness is about 0.4xi(0002) (the two-beam extinction distance). The delocalization effect on the experimental spectra is also discussed. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The distribution of mixed phases and its dependence on the polarity of cubic GaN epilayers are investigated by conventional X-ray pole figure and grazing incident diffraction (GID) pole figure. The hexagonal inclusions and cubic twins can be classified into two portions: one is formed with strict crystalline orientations, the other with crystalline misorientations. The former can be measured by conventional pole figures which reveal that the density of lamellate hexagonal grains and cubic twins located on (1 1 1)(Ga) and ((1) over bar (1) over bar1)(Ga) along [1 (1) over bar 0] direction are higher than those on ((1) over bar 1 1), and (1 (1) over bar 1)(N) along [110] direction. However, the low signals from tiny mixed phases with crystalline misorientations, detected by GID pole figures, distribute in a larger phi region near the [1 1 0] and [(1) over bar (1) over bar 0] directions with much weaker intensity, and in a smaller phi region near the [1 (1) over bar 0] and [(1) over bar 1 0] directions with slightly stronger intensity. GaN films were grown in pairs on two opposite c faces of Al2O3 substrate by low-pressure metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, and studied by scanning electron microscopy and converged beam electron diffraction. It is found that GaN film on the c-Al2O3 whose c face is forward to its crystal seed has [0001] polarity, and the other film on the C-Al2O3 whose c face is backward to its crystal seed has [000 (1) over bar] polarity. This letter presents the effective design of a tunable 80 Gbit/s wavelength converter with a simple configuration consisting of a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). Based on both cross-gain and cross-phase modulation in SOA, the polarity-preserved, ultrafast wavelength conversion is achieved by appropriately filtering the blue-chirped spectral component of a probe light. Moreover, the experiments are carried out to investigate into the wavelength tunability and the maximum tuning range of the designed wavelength converter. Our results show that a wide wavelength conversion range of nearly 35 nm is achieved with 21-nm downconversion and 14-nm upconversion, which is substantially limited by the operation wavelength ranges of a tunable OBPF and a tunable continuous-wave laser in our experiment. We also exploited the dynamics characteristics of the wavelength converter with variable input powers and different injection current of SOA. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We have studied the photovoltaic effects in Si doping superlattices (nipi) under different excitation conditions with and without additional cw optical biasing using a He-Ne laser. On the basis of the photovoltaic theory of carrier spatial separation in superlattices, we propose the concept of spatial fixity of the photovoltage polarity in type-II superlattices and examine the experimental results. The photovoltaic effect in Si nipi is found mainly from the direct transitions related with shallow impurities in real space, not the electron-hole band-to-band process as in GaAs nipi.

GaN epilayers were grown on (0001) sapphire substrates by NH3-MBE and RF-MBE (radio frequency plasma). The polarities of the epilayers were investigated by in-situ RHEED, chemical solution etching and AFM surface examination. By using a RF-MBE grown GaN layer as template to deposit GaN epilayer by NH3-MBE method, we found that not only Ga-polarity GaN films were repeatedly obtained, but also the electron mobility of these Ga-polarity films was significantly improved with a best value of 290 cm(2)/V.s at room temperature. Experimental results show it is an easy and stable way for growth of high quality Ga-polarity GaN films.

The lancelet (amphioxus) embryo develops from a miolecithal egg and starts gastrulation when it is approximately 400 cells in size, in a fashion similar to that of some non-chordate deuterostomes. Throughout this type of gastrulation, the embryo develops characteristics such as the notochord and hollow nerve cord that commonly appear in chordates. beta-Catenin is an important factor in initiating body patterning. The behavior and developmental pattern of this protein in early lancelet development was examined in this study. Cytoplasmic beta-catenin was localized to the animal pole after fertilization and then was incorporated asymmetrically into the blastomeres during the first cleavage. Asymmetric distribution was observed at least until the 32-cell stage. The first nuclear localization was at the 64-cell stage, and involved all of the cells. At the initial gastrula stage, however, concentrated beta-catenin was found on the dorsal side. LiCl treatment affected the asymmetric pattern of beta-catenin during the first cleavage. LiCl also changed distribution of nuclear beta-catenin at the initial gastrula stage: distribution extended to cells on the animal side. Apparently associated with this change, expression domains of goosecoid, lhx3 and otx also changed to a radially symmetric pattern centered at the animal pole. However, LiCl-treated embryos were able to establish embryonic polarity. The present study suggests that in the lancelet embryo, polarity determination is independent of dorsal morphogenesis.

Studies of perceptual learning have focused on aspects of learning that are related to early stages of sensory processing. However, conclusions that perceptual learning results in low-level sensory plasticity are of great controversy, largely because such learning can often be attributed to plasticity in later stages of sensory processing or in the decision processes. To address this controversy, we developed a novel random dot motion (RDM) stimulus to target motion cells selective to contrast polarity, by ensuring the motion direction information arises only from signal dot onsets and not their offsets, and used these stimuli in conjunction with the paradigm of task-irrelevant perceptual learning (TIPL). In TIPL, learning is achieved in response to a stimulus by subliminally pairing that stimulus with the targets of an unrelated training task. In this manner, we are able to probe learning for an aspect of motion processing thought to be a function of directional V1 simple cells with a learning procedure that dissociates the learned stimulus from the decision processes relevant to the training task. Our results show learning for the exposed contrast polarity and that this learning does not transfer to the unexposed contrast polarity. These results suggest that TIPL for motion stimuli may occur at the stage of directional V1 simple cells.

The receptor deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) directs dynamic polarizing activities in animals toward its extracellular ligand netrin. How DCC polarizes toward netrin is poorly understood. By performing live-cell imaging of the DCC orthologue UNC-40 during anchor cell invasion in Caenorhabditis elegans, we have found that UNC-40 clusters, recruits F-actin effectors, and generates F-actin in the absence of UNC-6 (netrin). Time-lapse analyses revealed that UNC-40 clusters assemble, disassemble, and reform at periodic intervals in different regions of the cell membrane. This oscillatory behavior indicates that UNC-40 clusters through a mechanism involving interlinked positive (formation) and negative (disassembly) feedback. We show that endogenous UNC-6 and ectopically provided UNC-6 orient and stabilize UNC-40 clustering. Furthermore, the UNC-40-binding protein MADD-2 (a TRIM family protein) promotes ligand-independent clustering and robust UNC-40 polarization toward UNC-6. Together, our data suggest that UNC-6 (netrin) directs polarized responses by stabilizing UNC-40 clustering. We propose that ligand-independent UNC-40 clustering provides a robust and adaptable mechanism to polarize toward netrin.
