The Genome Sequence of Taurine Cattle: A Window to Ruminant Biology and Evolution

To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

Small mammal abundances in isolated and non-isolated primary forest reserves near Manaus, Brazil

Abundances of msmall terrestrial mammals were estimated in 10 and 100-ha, isolated and non-isolated primary forest reserves near, Manaus, Brazil between October 1983 and March 1984. The smalt mammal abundance pattern In a 10 ha reserve isolated fan appoximately three years differed significantly from that in othen reserves, primarily due to higher capture rates of Marmosa cinerea, Rhipidomys mastacalis, and Onyzomys paricola in the isolated reserve. Viet type and re-invasion potential may be important factors the small mammal communities in forest patches. Variation the small mammal community among othen reserves was pnimanlty due to variatton In the abundances of Proechimys and 0. capito. At least pant of this vantation was attributable to temporal efects, but variation due to reserve effects also was suggested. Small mammals were much more abundant in the reserves during the present study than in 1982.

El fet que les finances socials estiguin íntimament lligades a les organitzacions que volen ser socialment responsables provoca la pregunta sobre quines característiques tenen i de quina manera es poden mesurar. Atès que no existeix una concepció unànime de RS ha estat imprescindible proposar una nova definició centrada en els aspectes fonamentals del concepte, per tal de poder avançar en la cerca d’indicadors. La línia d’investigació escollida es concreta en la conceptualització del terme RSO, que permet identificar-ne les dimensions i components, i així delimitar l’estudi a una aproximació als indicadors de la RSO concretament per a l’àmbit del treball.

Refrigeració de les gillettes d’ una talladora industrial

L’empresa Proslit Equipment forma part del Grup Comexi i la seva activitat consisteix en la fabricació de màquines talladores de material flexible. Degut als avenços tecnològics, s’han incrementat les prestacions de les seves màquines, entre altres coses, s’ha augmentat la velocitat de tall del film fins a 800 m/min. Aquest factor afegit a condicionants com per exemple treballar amb materials gruixuts i abrasius, a temperatures ambientals elevades, etc. fa que sorgeixi una problemàtica en el tall gillette. Degut a la fricció entre el film que circula i les gillettes que el tallen, es crea una energia calorífica que fa augmentar la temperatura de les gillettes fins a tal extrem que aquestes provoquen petites fusions del plàstic, aquest s’incrusta a les gillettes que s’acaben trencant. L’objecte principal d’aquest projecte és fer una anàlisi tècnica mitjançant elements finits de la problemàtica que s’ha detectat a les màquines talladores de l’empresa Proslit Equipment, concretament de l’escalfament de les gillettes utilitzades en el sistema de tall. Es pretén crear un model teòric que s’aproximi al màxim a la realitat de manera que es pugui observar el comportament tèrmic del sistema de tall en funció de les condicions que es determinin com a més desfavorables. Una vegada s’obtinguin aquests resultats teòrics, es valoraran i es proposaran solucions

Projecte de rehabilitació d'un habitatge unifamiliar entre mitgeres "Cal Parent"

L’habitatge objecte d’aquest projecte final de carrera és anomenat popularment com a CalParent, i està situat al carrer Nou nº 15 del municipi de Biure, a la comarca de l’Alt Empordà. Ésuna típica edificació entremitgeres de poble, formada per planta baixa, planta pis, planta segonpis, terrat, i un pati a la part posterior de l’edifici.La façana principal està orientada al sud-oest i la façana posterior a nord-est, quedant lesaltres dues façanes que formen l’edifici en contacte amb els edificis veïns.Biure d’Empordà forma part de la comarca de l’Alt Empordà, província de Girona. Elterme municipal es troba a 81 m d’altitud i disposa d’una superfície de 10 Km2. Els límits delterme municipal són al nord amb Darnius i Capmany, a l‘est amb Masarac i Peralada, al sud ambCabanes i Pont de Molins i a l’oest amb Boadella d’Empordà

The flower-visiting social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in two areas of Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil

The flower-visiting social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in two areas of Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. The structure of flower-visiting social wasps' assemblages in the CPCN Pró-Mata of São Francisco de Paula and in the Green Belt of Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, are characterized. A total of 879 polistine wasps were collected, of which 475 (11 spp.) in the CPCN and 404 (21 spp.) in the Green Belt, from September 1997 to April 2001 and from September 2001 to April 2004, respectively. Foraging social wasps were observed on flowers of 36 species of angiosperms (20 families) in the Green Belt, and on flowers of 54 species of angiosperms (21 families) in the CPCN. Asteraceae was the most visited plant family on both studied localities. A list of pant species visited by the polistines is provided.

On the spread of the European catfish (Silurus glanis) in the Iberian Peninsula: first record in the Llobregat river basin

The first record of the European catfish (Silurus glanis L. 1758) introduced to the Llobregat river basin (NE Spain) is reported. We captured one individual of this silurid fish species (of a total of 541 fish) in La Baells reservoir on 30 August 2006. Given the low catchability of this fish species, the popularity among some anglers, and old rumours on this introduction, we hypothesize that this species has been present in the reservoir since a few years ago, despite we did not capture it in two previous surveys. The illegal introduction of this and other exotic species to other Iberian river basins should be prevented by the Spanish administration

Percepción por los expertos de la función de densidad de probabilidad de los rendimientos de cultivos

En la literatura sobre determinación subjetiva de funciones de densidad de probabilidad (f.d.p.) de rendimientos de cultivos, se ha señalado que los agricultores tienden a percibir f.d.p. muy «estrechas» (con varianza baja), un resultado que coincide con el señalado en otros contextos experimentales. En este trabajo se ha constatado que investigadores y expertos en producción vegetal tienen también una pobre percepción de la forma de la f.d.p. Este sesgo en la percepción de la f.d.p. sería compartido por agricultores y expertos, estos últimos con una buena formación estadística. Sin embargo ambos grupos realizan un trabajo diario exitoso que implica frecuentemente discriminar entre f.d.p. de rendimientos de cultivos.

The internal wave field in Sau reservoir : Observation and modeling of a third vertical mode

Water withdrawal from Mediterranean reservoirs in summer is usually very high. Because of this, stratification is often continuous and far from the typical two-layered structure, favoring the excitation of higher vertical modes. The analysis of wind, temperature, and current data from Sau reservoir (Spain) shows that the third vertical mode of the internal seiche (baroclinic mode) dominated the internal wave field at the beginning of September 2003. We used a continuous stratification two-dimensional model to calculate the period and velocity distribution of the various modes of the internal seiche, and we calculated that the period of the third vertical mode is ;24 h, which coincides with the period of the dominating winds. As a result of the resonance between the third mode and the wind, the other oscillation modes were not excited during this period

The role of surface vertical mixing in phytoplankton distribution in a stratified reservoir

We investigated convection caused by surface cooling and mixing attributable to wind shear stress and their roles as agents for the transport of phytoplankton cells in the water column by carrying out two daily surveys during the stratified period of the Sau reservoir. Green algae, diatoms, and cryptophyceae were the dominant phytoplankton communities during the surveys carried out in the middle (July) and end (September) of the stratified period. We show that a system with a linear stratification and that is subject to weak surface forcing, with weak winds , < 4 m S (-1) and low energy dissipation rate values of the order of 1028 m2 s23 or lower, enables the formation of thin phytoplankton layers. These layers quickly disappear when water parcels mix because there is a medium external forcing (convection) induced by the night surface cooling, which is characterized by energy dissipation rates on the order of , 5x10(-8)m2s(-3). During both surveys the wind generated internal waves during the entire diurnal cycle. During the day, and because of the weak winds, phytoplankton layers rise in the water column up to a depth determined by both solar heating and internal waves. In contrast, during the night phytoplankton mixes down to a depth determined by both convection and internal waves. These internal waves, together with the wind-driven current generated at the surface, seem to be the agents responsible for the horizontal transport of phytoplankton across the reservoir.

One-sided jet at milliarcsecond scales in LS I +61˚ 303

We present Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the high mass X-ray binary LS I +61˚303, carried out with the European VLBI Network (EVN). Over the 11 hour observing run, performed ~10 days after a radio outburst, the radio source showed a constant flux density, which allowed sensitive imaging of the emission distribution. The structure in the map shows a clear extension to the southeast. Comparing our data with previous VLBI observations we interpret the extension as a collimated radio jet as found in several other X-ray binaries. Assuming that the structure is the result of an expansion that started at the onset of the outburst, we derive an apparent expansion velocity of 0:003 c, which, in the context of Doppler boosting, corresponds to an intrinsic velocity of at least 0:4 c for an ejection close to the line of sight. From the apparent velocity in all available epochs we are able to establish variations in the ejection angle which imply a precessing accretion disk. Finally we point out that LS I +61˚303, like SS 433 and Cygnus X-1, shows evidence for an emission region almostorthogonal to the relativistic jet

Teollisuuden palveluliiketoiminnan vaativien toimitusprosessien kehittäminen arvovirtakartoituksen avulla

Työssä kartoitettiin teollisuuden palveluliiketoiminnan vaativien toimitusprosessien kehittämistä Lean -ajattelu yritysympäristössä. Tavoitteena oli vaativien toimituspro-sessien ongelmien selvittäminen ja kehittämiskohteiden määrittäminen palveluliike-toiminnan tuottavuuden kehittämisen näkökulmasta. Lisäksi tutkittiin arvovirtakuvauksen soveltuvuutta teollisuuden palveluliiketoiminnan prosessien kehittämiseen. Kirjallisuusosuudessa selvitettiin teollisuuden palveluliiketoiminnan prosessien kehit-tämisen erityispiirteitä ja Lean -ajattelun periaatteita. Tavoitteena on löytää teollisuuden palveluliiketoiminnan kehittämisen erityispiirteet tuottavuuden kannalta ja arvioida niiden soveltuvuutta Lean -ajatteluun. Työn empiirisessä osuudessa kartoitettiin yrityksen vaativat prosessit. Menetelminä työssä käytettiin puolistrukturoitua kyselyä, ryhmähaastattelua, ja osallistuvaa ha-vainnointia. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella laadittiin kehityssuunnitelma. Diplomityö käynnisti kohdeorganisaatiossa prosessien päivitysprosessin, ja loi puitteet vaativien toimitusten kehityssuunnitelman toteuttamiselle.
