The interface properties of GaNxAs1-x/GaAs single-quantum well is investigated at 80 K by reflectance difference spectroscopy. Strong in-plane optical anisotropies (IPOA) are observed. Numerical calculations based on a 4 band K . P Hamiltonian are performed to analyze the origin of the optical anisotropy. It is found that the IPOA can be mainly attributed to anisotropic strain effect, which increases with the concentration of nitrogen. The origin of the strain component epsilon(xy) is also discussed.

The steplike density of states obtained from reflectance-difference spectroscopy demonstrates that ultrathin InAs layers should be regarded as two-dimensional quantum wells rather than isolated clusters, even for the sample with only 1/3 monolayer InAs in (311)-oriented GaAs. The degree of anisotropy is within the intrinsic anisotropy of (311)-oriented ultrathin quantum wells, indicating that there is little structural or strain anisotropy in the InAs islands. Optical anisotropy of thin films of an organo-soluble flexible polyimide based on 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) was detected by a prism-coupler technique. A mechanism is proposed, based on the model of gel film collapse. The degrees of optical anisotropy of the thin films were evaluated via the level of negative birefringence. The residual solvent in the films lessens the levels of negative birefringence so that the residual solvent must be evacuated. The levels of negative birefringence are independent on the solid content of the initial solution, but dependent on the thickness of the films. For a film of 16 mu m thick, zero birefringence was achieved, postulated from the dependence of negative birefringence on the thickness of thin films. The relationship between the optical anisotropy and solution properties shows that the degrees of optical anisotropy of thin films on the same scale of thickness depend on macromolecular sizes in their dilute solutions.

An organo-soluble polyimide was successfully synthesized by two step polycondensation accompanied with chemical imidization. Optical anisotropy of thin films was detected by a prism-coupler technique. The results showed that the optical anisotropic properties of thin films prepared from solutions in different solvents depend on the solution properties. It is concluded that the more expanded the chain conformation in solution, the larger the negative birefringence of thin films. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

InAs and InxGa1-xAs (x = 0.2 and 0.5) self-organized quantum dots (QDs) were fabricated on GaAs(0 0 1) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), acid photoluminescence polarization spectrum (PLP). Both structural and optical properties of InxGa1-xAs QD layer are apparently different from those of InAs QD layer. AFM shows that InxGa1-xAs QDs tend to be aligned along the [1 (1) over bar 0] direction, while InAs QDs are distributed randomly. TEM demonstrates that there is strain modulation along [1 1 0] in the InxGa1-xAs QD layers. PLP shows that In0.5Ga0.5As islands present optical anisotropy along [1 1 0] and [1 (1) over bar 0] due to structural and strain field anisotropy for the islands. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Nonpolar a-plane (1120) ZnO thin films have been fabricated on gamma-LiAlO2 (302) substrates via the low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. An obvious intensity variation of the E-2 mode in the Raman spectra indicates that there exhibits in-plane optical anisotropy in the a-plane ZnO thin films. Highly-oriented uniform grains of rectangular shape can be seen from the atomic force microscopy images, which mean that the lateral growth rate of the thin films is also anisotropic. It is demonstrated experimentally that a buffer layer deposited at a low temperature (200 degrees C) can improve the structural and optical properties of the epilayer to a large extent. Nb2O5 sculptured thin. films deposited by electron beam evaporation with glancing angle deposition were prepared. Nb2O5 sculptured thin. films with tilted columns are optical anisotropy. XRD, SEM, UV-vis-NIR spectra are employed to characterize the microstructure and optical properties. The maximum of birefringence (Delta n) is up to 0.045 at alpha = 70 degrees with packing density of 0.487. With increasing the deposition angle, refractive index and packing density of Nb2O5 STF are decreasing. The relationship among deposition parameter, microstructure and optical properties was investigated in detail. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

This study investigates the optical properties and microstructure of Ta2O5 film deposited with the glancing angle deposition technique. The tilted nanocolumn microstructure, examined with scanning electron microscopy, induces the optical anisotropy of thin film. The optical properties of thin film are characterized with an inverse synthesis method. Based on the Cauchy model, the dispersion equations of optical constants of film are determined from the transmittance spectra measured at normal and oblique incidence over 400-800 nm. The starting values derived with an envelope method quicken the optimization process greatly. The dispersion of the principal indices N-1, N-2, and N-3 and the thickness d of thin film are presented statistically. A good agreement between the measured optical properties and theoretical calculation is obtained, which validates the model established for thin film produced by glancing angle deposition. Using the effective-mass Hamiltonian for an arbitrary direction wurtzite semiconductor on the basis of k.p theory, we investigate the strain effects on the transition energies and optical properties in the R-plane ([1012]-oriented plane) GaN. The results show that (1) the transition energies decrease with the biaxial strains changing from -0.5 to 0.5%; and (2) giant optical anisotropy appears in the R-plane which is significantly affected by the biaxial strains. We clarify the relation between the strains and the polarization properties. Finally, we discuss the application of these properties to the R-plane GaN based devices. OPTICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GAAS/ALGAAS RIDGE-QUANTUM-WELL-WIRES GROWN BY MBE ON NONPLANAR SUBSTRATES
Resumo:
With conventional photolithography and wet chemical etching, we have realized GaAs/AlGaAs buried ridge-quantum-well-wires (RQWWs) with vertically stacked wires in lateral arrays promising for device application, which were grown in situ by a single-step molecular beam epitaxy growth and formed at the ridge tops of mesas on nonplanar substrates. Confocal photoluminescence (CPL) and polarization-dependent photoreflectance (PR) are applied to study optical characteristics of RQWWs. Lateral bandgap modulation due to lateral variation of QW layer thickness is demonstrated not only by CPL but also by PR. As one evidence for RQWWs, a large blue shift is observed at the energy level positions for electronic transitions corresponding to quantum wells (QWs) at the ridge tops of mesas compared with those corresponding to QWs on nonpatterned areas of the same sample. The blue shift is in contradiction with the fact that the GaAs QW layers at the tops of the mesas are thicker than those on nonpatterned areas. The other evidence for RQWWs, optical anisotropy is provided by the polarization-dependent PR, which results from lateral quantum size effect existing at the tops of the mesas.

A polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer has been established to measure the EO effect of very thin film materials with optical anisotropy. Unlike a common MZ interferometer, all the components are connected via polarization-maintaining fibers. At the same time, a polarized DFB laser with a maximum power output of 10mW is adopted as the light source to induce a large extinction ratio. Here, we take it to determine the electro-optical coefficients of a very thin superlattice structure with GaAs, KTP, and GaN as comparative samples. The measured EO coefficients show good comparability with the others.

We present our recent achievements in the growing and optical characterization of KYb(WO4)2 (hereafter KYbW) crystals and demonstrate laser operation in this stoichiometric material. Single crystals of KYbW with optimal crystalline quality have been grown by the top-seeded-solution growth slow-cooling method. The optical anisotropy of this monoclinic crystal has been characterized, locating the tensor of the optical indicatrix and measuring the dispersion of the principal values of the refractive indices as well as the thermo-optic coefficients. Sellmeier equations have been constructed valid in the visible and near-IR spectral range. Raman scattering has been used to determine the phonon energies of KYbW and a simple physical model is applied for classification of the lattice vibration modes. Spectroscopic studies (absorption and emission measurements at room and low temperature) have been carried out in the spectral region near 1 µm characteristic for the ytterbium transition. Energy positions of the Stark sublevels of the ground and the excited state manifolds have been determined and the vibronic substructure has been identified. The intrinsic lifetime of the upper laser level has been measured taking care to suppress the effect of reabsorption and the intrinsic quantum efficiency has been estimated. Lasing has been demonstrated near 1074 nm with 41% slope efficiency at room temperature using a 0.5 mm thin plate of KYbW. This laser material holds great promise for diode pumped high-power lasers, thin disk and waveguide designs as well as for ultrashort (ps/fs) pulse laser systems.

The optical microstructures of thin sections of two liquid crystalline polymers are examined in the polarizing microscope. The polymers are random copolyesters based on hydroxybenzoic and hydroxynaphthoic acids (B-N), and hydroxybenzoic acid and ethylene terephthalate (B-ET). Sections cut from oriented samples, so as to include the extrusion direction, show microstructures in which there is no apparent preferred orientation of the axes describing the local optical anisotropy. The absence of preferred orientation in the microstructure, despite marked axial alignment of molecular chain segments as demonstrated by X-Ray diffraction, is interpreted in terms of the polymer having biaxial optical properties. The implication of optical biaxiality is that, although the mesophases are nematic, the orientation of the molecules is correlated about three (orthogonal) axes over distances greater than a micron. The structure is classified as a multiaxial nematic.

This thesis presents theoretical investigations of the sub band structure and optical properties of semiconductor quantum wires. For the subband structure, we employ multiband effective-mass theory and the effective bond-orbital model both of which fully account for the band mixing and material anisotropy. We also treat the structure geometry in detail taking account of such effects as the compositional grading across material interfaces. Based on the subband structure, we calculate optical properties of quantum-wire structures. A recuring theme is the cross-over from one- to ~wo-dimensional behavior in these structures. This complicated behavior procludes the application of simple theoretical models to obtain the electronic structure. In particular, we calculate laser properties of quantum wires grown in V-grooves and find enhanced performance compared with quantum-well lasers. We also investigate optical anisotropy in quantum-wire arrays and propose an electro-optic device based on such structures.
