Low temperature (LT) AlN interlayers were used to effectively reduce the tension stress and micro-cracks on the surface of the GaN epilayer grown on Si (111) substrate. Optical Microscopy (OM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Surface Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were employed to characterize these samples grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). In addition, wet etching method was used to evaluate the defect of the GaN epilayer. The results demonstrate that the morphology and crystalline properties of the GaN epilayer strongly depend on the thickness, interlayer number and growth temperature of the LT AlN interlayer. With the optimized LT AlN interlayer structures, high quality GaN epilayers with a low crack density can be obtained. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study describes the growth of a low-temperature AlN interlayer for crack-free GaN growth on Si(111). It is demonstrated that, in addition to the lower growth temperature, growth of the AlN interlayer under Al-rich conditions is a critical factor for crack-free GaN growth on Si(111) substrates. The effect of the AlN interlayer thickness and NH3/TMA1 ratios on the lattice constants of subsequently grown high temperature GaN was investigated by X-ray triple crystal diffraction. The results show that the elimination of micro-cracks is related to the reduction of the tensile stress in the GaN epitaxial layers. This was also coincident with a greater number of pits formed in the AlN interlayer grown under Al rich conditions. It is proposed that these pits act as centers for the generation of misfit dislocations, which in turn leads to the reduction of tensile stress. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High quality crack free GaN epilayers were grown on Si(111) substrates. Low temperature AlN interlayer grown under low V/III ratio was used to effectively eliminate the formation of micro-cracks. It is found that tensile stress in the GaN epilayer decreases as the N/Al ratio decreases used for AlN interlayer growth. The high optical and structural qualities of the GaN/Si samples were characterized by RBS, PL and XRD measurements. The RT-PL FWHM of the band edge emission is only 39.5meV The XRD FWHM of the GaN/Si sample is 8.2arcmin, which is among the best values ever reported.

La2Zr2O7 (LZ) and La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7 (LZ7C3) as novel candidate materials for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were prepared by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The adhesive strength of the as-deposited LZ and LZ7C3 coatings were evaluated by transverse scratch test. Meanwhile, the factors affecting the critical load value were also investigated. The critical load value of LZ7C3 coating is larger than that of LZ coating, whereas both values of these two coatings are lower than that of the traditional coating material, i.e. 8 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ). The micro-cracks formed in the scratch channel can partially release the stress in the coating and then enhance the adhesive strength of the coating. The width of the scratch channel and the surface spallation after transverse scratch test are effective factors to evaluate the adhesive strength of LZ and LZ7C3 coatings.

Many observations show that seismic anisotropy is very common in the crust and upper mantle of the Earth. Seismic anisotropy can provide some clue about the changing and transporting process inside the earth. in recent years, abundant earthquake travel time data are accumulated, computers become more powerful, and these make the inversion of earthquake travel time data practical. In this thesis we studied the theory of elastic wave in anisotropic media, some formule for travel time inversion were derived. We present an iterative procedure to determine 21 elastic parameters from qP wave travel times. No a priori assumptions about heterogeneity and anisotropy of the model are made. The procedure is suitable for the case when we know nothing about the symmetry of anisotropy of the media, as well as for the case of earthquake travel time inversion which may contain various symmetry of anisotropy. The procedure is tested with a synthetic multiple-source offset VSP experiment. The results proved that the formulae are correct, and the procedure is practical. The results and the related theory indicate that the anisotropic inversion needs more rays than isotropic case. For a 2-D weak anisotropic (WA) medium, we need at least 5 rays in different directions to retrieve the elastic parameters on one grid point, and for a 3-D WA medium we need at least 15 rays in different directions to retrieve the elastic parameters on one grid point. The results also indicate that the starting background velocity has no influence on the final results, at least for the model we specified. Our results also show that insufficient illumination coverage will slow down the convergence rate, and make the results more sensitive to noise. We apply the procedure to a set of field travel time data. The data is from an artificial seismic observation. This observation is for locating micro-seismic events around a tunnel, its purpose is to find out if the digging process and the stress condition around the tunnel can generate micro-cracks. The size of this area is around 100m. The anisotropy derived from qP travel times is the same as the anisotropy showed by apparent velocities, and is also consistent with the anisotropy derived from S-wave splitting phenomena.

Micro-cracks appeared between the boundaries of different minerals of rocks during heating process, because of different thermal expansion coefficients of minerals, this phenomenon is referred as thermal cracking of rocks. The transport property of rocks was changed greatly due to the thermal cracking induced micro-cracks network, for example, the permeability of carbonate increases about 10 times when the temperature arise from room temperature to 110~120℃. Thermal cracking of rocks is a new research field of rock physics, which related closely to rock mechanics, mineralogy as well as experimental technology. The thermal cracking experiments of various rocks were performed, the rock macroscopic properties such as porosity, permeability, velocities of elastic waves in rocks were obtained as a function of temperature of heating process, and the microscopic structures of rocks were observed by using Scanning Electro-Microscope (SEM). The mechanism and the theoretical model of thermal cracking of rocks are given at present paper. Finally, the potential implication of rock thermal cracking to petroleum industry is discussed.

In this study, the environmentally induced cracking behaviour of the NiTi weldment with and without post-weld heat-treatment (PWHT) in Hanks’ solution at 37.5 °C at OCP were studied by tensile and cyclic slow-strain-rate tests (SSRT), and compared with those tested in oil (an inert environment). Our previous results in the tensile and cyclic SSRT showed that the weldment without PWHT showed high susceptibility to the hydrogen cracking, as evidenced by the degradation of tensile and super-elastic properties when testing in Hanks' solution. The weldment after PWHT was much less susceptible to hydrogen attack in Hanks' solution as no obvious degradation in the tensile and super-elastic properties was observed, and only a very small amount of micro-cracks were found in the fracture surface. The susceptibility to hydrogen cracking of the NiTi weldment could be alleviated by applying PWHT at the optimized temperature of 350 °C after laser welding.

Fatigue crack initiation occurs at the surface, although sub surface nucleation has also been reported. Localized imperfections like inclusions close to surface and surface small pits can result in crack sources. Coatings are not always beneficial by fatigue point of view too. Mechanical properties of the covering material can change considerably the fatigue behavior of base metal due to residual surface stresses, to micro cracks or to hydrogen embrittlement. This paper is concerned with analysis of electrolytic etch on the fatigue resistance of a 35NCD16 high strength steel in a mechanical condition of (1760 - 1960) MPa, and analysis of electroplated hard chromium effects on the fatigue resistance in a strength condition of 989 MPa. Hardness impression was used as a reference parameter in case of electrolytic etch. In both cases, experimental data showed that fatigue strength of 35NCD16 steel was considerably reduced. The purpose of this study is to characterize the corrosion product on the surface of silver, employing H2SO4 (0.5M) as electrolyte. The electrochemical parameters, Ecor, Icor, V cor and Rp were obtained after analyzing the potentiodynamic polarization curve in which two peaks were observed. The smallest (passive region) is attributed to the Cl- traces from the reference electrode, with micro-cracks. The second peak (in the transpassivation region) corresponds to the polarization curve of silver in H2SO 4 without contaminants. SEM images and EDS analysis reveal images of a surface layer on silver, consisting of structures containing sulfur, oxygen, silver and chloride, as the corrosion product. On this layer silver sulfate crystals were observed, which occurs during the formation of silver chloride nanocrystals with different morphologies, when chloride ions were added to the electrolyte medium. ©The Electrochemical Society.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the corrosion of commercially pure (CP) titanium and Ti6Al4V in vitro at different F- concentrations regularly found in the oral cavity by using different electrochemical tests and surface analysis techniques. electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit potential (OCP) and potentio-dynamic polarization tests were associated to advanced characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, AFM, ICP-MS and XPS. OCP tests revealed a higher reactivity of both CP titanium and Ti6Al4V at 12,300 ppm F- concentration than that recorded at 227 ppm F-. Also, a significant decrease of the corrosion resistance of both materials was noticed by EIS in fluoride solutions. Material loss caused by corrosion was noticed on titanium surfaces by SEM and AFM in the presence of high F- concentration. CP titanium degraded by pitting corrosion while Ti6Al4V suffered from general corrosion showing micro-cracks on surface. Furthermore, a high release of metallic ions from the test samples after immersion at high F concentrations was detected by ICP-MS, that can be potentially toxic to oral tissues.

This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of bidimensional bonded lap joints. For this purpose, the stress singularities occurring at the intersections of the adherend-adhesive interfaces with the free edges are first investigated and a method for computing both the order and the intensity factor of these singularities is described briefly. After that, a simplified model, in which the adhesive domain is reduced to a line, is derived by using an asymptotic expansion method. Then, assuming that the assembly debonding is produced by a macro-crack propagation in the adhesive, the associated energy release rate is computed. Finally, a homogenization technique is used in order to take into account a preliminary adhesive damage consisting of periodic micro-cracks. Some numerical results are presented.
