We observe a sharp feature in the ultra-low-temperature magnetoconductivity of degenerately doped Ge:Sb at H∼25 kOe, which is robust up to at least three times the critical density for the insulator-metal transition. This field corresponds to a low-energy scale characteristic of the special nature of antimony donors in germanium. Its presence and sensitivity to uniaxial stress confirm the notion of metallic impurity bands in doped germanium.

Some bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high crack initiation toughness due to shear band mediated plastic flow at the crack tip and yet do not display additional resistance to crack growth due to the lack of a microstructure. Thus, at crack initiation, the fracture behavior of BMGs transits from that of ductile alloys to that of brittle ceramics. In this paper, we attempt to understand the physics behind the characteristic length from the notch root at which this transition occurs, through testing of four-point bend specimens made of a nominally ductile Zr-based BMG in three different structural states. In the as-cast state, both symmetric (mode I) and asymmetric (mixed mode) bend specimens are tested. The process of shear band mediated plastic flow followed by crack initiation at the notch root was monitored through in situ imaging. Results show that stable crack growth occurs inside a dominant shear band through a distance of, similar to 60 mu m, irrespective of the structural state and mode mixity, before attaining criticality. Detailed finite element simulations show that this length corresponds to the distance from the notch root over which a positive hydrostatic stress gradient prevails. The mean ridge heights on fractured surfaces are found to correlate with the toughness of the BMG. The Argon and Salama model, which is based on the meniscus instability phenomenon at the notch root, is modified to explain the experimentally observed physics of fracture in ductile BMGs. The nanoindentation technique was employed to examine the strain rate sensitivity, m, and its dependence on the structural state of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). The free volume content in the BMG was varied by examining samples in the as-cast (AC), shot-peened (SP), and structurally relaxed (SR) states. Hardness values measured at different loading rates and over a temperature range of 300-423 K as well as the strain-rate jump tests conducted in the quasi-static regime at room temperature, show that m is always negative. All the load-displacement (P-h) curves in this temperature regime exhibit serrated load-displacement responses, indicating that the shear band mediated inhomogeneous plastic flow governs deformation. Such localization of flow and associated softening is the raison d'etre for the negative m. Significant levels of pile-up around the indents were also noted. The order in the average values of hardness, pile-up heights, and the displacement bursts on the P-h curves was always such that SR > AC > SP, which is also the order of increasing free volume content. These observations were utilized to discuss the reasons for the negative strain rate sensitivity, and its dependence on the structural state of metallic glasses. It is suggested that the positive values of m reported in the literature for them are possibly experimental artefacts that arise due to large pile ups around the indents which lead to erroneous estimation in hardness values. Some of the metallogenic provinces of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico are defined by the geographic distribution of trace elements in the primary sulfide minerals chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The elements investigated include antimony, arsenic, bismuth, cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, indium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silver, tellurium, thallium, and tin. Of these elements, cobalt, gallium, germanium, indium, nickel, silver, and tin exhibit the best defined geographic distribution.

The data indicate that chalcopyrite is the preferred host for tin and perhaps molybdenum; sphalerite is the preferred host for cadmium, gallium, germanium, indium, and manganese; galena is the preferred host for antimony, bismuth, silver, tellurium, and thallium; and pyrite is the preferred host for cobalt, nickel, and perhaps arsenic. With respect to the two minerals chalcopyrite and sphalerite, antimony, arsenic, molybdenum, nickel, silver, and tin prefer chalcopyrite; and bismuth, cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, indium, manganese, and thallium prefer sphalerite. This distribution probably is the result of the interaction of several factors, among which are these: the various radii of the elements, the association due to chemical similarities of the major and trace elements, and the degree of ionic versus covalent and metallic character of the metal-sulfur bonds in chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The type of deposit, according to a temperature classification, appears to be of minor importance in determining the trace element content of chalcopyrite and sphalerite.

A preliminary investigation of large single crystals of sphalerite and chalcopyrite indicates that the distribution within a single crystal of some elements such as cadmium in sphalerite and indium and silver in chalcopyrite is relatively uniform, whereas the distribution of some other elements such as cobalt and manganese in sphalerite is somewhat less uniform and the distribution of tin in sphalerite is extremely erratic. The variations in trace element content probably are due largely to variations in the composition of the fluids during the growth of the crystals, but the erratic behavior of tin in sphalerite perhaps is related to the presence of numerous cavities and inclusions in the crystal studied.

Maps of the geographic distribution of trace elements in chalcopyrite and sphalerite exhibit three main belts of greater than average trace element content, which are called the Eastern, Central, and Western belts. These belts are consistent in trend and position with a beltlike distribution of copper, gold, lead, zinc, silver, and tungsten deposits and with most of the major tectonic features. However, there appear to be no definite time relationships, for as many as four metallogenic epochs, from Precambrian to late Tertiary, are represented by ore deposits within the Central belt.

The evidence suggests that the beltlike features have a deep seated origin, perhaps in the sub-crust or outer parts of the mantle, and that the deposits within each belt might be genetically related through a beltlike compositional heterogeneity in the source regions of the ores. Hence, the belts are regarded as metallogenic provinces.

The yield behaviour of two aluminum alloy foams (Alporas and Duocel) has been investigated for a range of axisymmetric compressive stress states. The initial yield surface has been measured, and the evolution of the yield surface has been explored for uniaxial and hydrostatic stress paths. It is found that the hydrostatic yield strength is of similar magnitude to the uniaxial yield strength. The yield surfaces are of quadratic shape in the stress space of mean stress versus effective stress, and evolve without corner formation. Two phenomenological isotropic constitutive models for the plastic behaviour are proposed. The first is based on a geometrically self-similar yield surface while the second is more complex and allows for a change in shape of the yield surface due to differential hardening along the hydrostatic and deviatoric axes. Good agreement is observed between the experimentally measured stress versus strain responses and the predictions of the models.

189W activities were produced via the 192Os(n, α) reaction using irradiation of isotopically enriched 192Os metallic powder of ~100 mg/cm2 with 14 MeV neutrons. The X-γ and γ-γ coincidence measurements were made so as to obtain γ rays from 189W decay and its coincidence relations. A new simple decay scheme of 189W including three γ rays of 210.2, 229.6 and 260.2 keV is proposed. Two new levels of 189Re at 470.4 and 489.8 keV are assigned.

The goal of this work is to analyze three-dimensional dispersive metallic photonic crystals (PCs) and to find a structure that can provide a bandgap and a high cutoff frequency. The determination of the band structure of a PC with dispersive materials is an expensive nonlinear eigenvalue problem; in this work we propose a rational-polynomial method to convert such a nonlinear eigenvalue problem into a linear eigenvalue problem. The spectral element method is extended to rapidly calculate the band structure of three-dimensional PCs consisting of realistic dispersive materials modeled by Drude and Drude-Lorentz models. Exponential convergence is observed in the numerical experiments. Numerical results show that, at the low frequency limit, metallic materials are similar to a perfect electric conductor, where the simulation results tend to be the same as perfect electric conductor PCs. Band structures of the scaffold structure and semi-woodpile structure metallic PCs are investigated. It is found that band structures of semi-woodpile PCs have a very high cutoff frequency as well as a bandgap between the lowest two bands and the higher bands.

PURPOSE: Malignant ureteral obstruction often necessitates chronic urinary diversion and is associated with high rates of failure with traditional ureteral stents. We evaluated the outcomes of a metallic stent placed for malignant ureteral obstruction and determined the impact of risk factors previously associated with increased failure rates of traditional stents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing placement of the metallic Resonance® stent for malignant ureteral obstruction at an academic referral center were identified retrospectively. Stent failure was defined as unplanned stent exchange or nephrostomy tube placement for signs or symptoms of recurrent ureteral obstruction (recurrent hydroureteronephrosis or increasing creatinine). Predictors of time to stent failure were assessed using Cox regression. RESULTS: A total of 37 stents were placed in 25 patients with malignant ureteral obstruction. Of these stents 12 (35%) were identified to fail. Progressive hydroureteronephrosis and increasing creatinine were the most common signs of stent failure. Three failed stents had migrated distally and no stents required removal for recurrent infection. Patients with evidence of prostate cancer invading the bladder at stent placement were found to have a significantly increased risk of failure (HR 6.50, 95% CI 1.45-29.20, p = 0.015). Notably symptomatic subcapsular hematomas were identified in 3 patients after metallic stent placement. CONCLUSIONS: Failure rates with a metallic stent are similar to those historically observed with traditional polyurethane based stents in malignant ureteral obstruction. The invasion of prostate cancer in the bladder significantly increases the risk of failure. Patients should be counseled and observed for subcapsular hematoma formation with this device.

The influence of the interlayer coupling on formation of the quantized Hall conductor phase at the filling factor v = 2 was studied in the multi-layer GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. The disorder broadened Gaussian photoluminescence line due to the localized electrons was found in the quantized Hall phase of the isolated multi-quantum well structure. On the other hand, the quantized Hall phase of the weakly coupled multi-layers emitted an unexpected asymmetrical line similar to that one observed in the metallic electron systems. We demonstrated that the observed asymmetry is caused by a partial population of the extended electron states formed in the quantized Hall conductor phase due to the interlayer percolation. A sharp decrease of the single-particle scattering time associated with these extended states was observed at the filling factor v = 2. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We theoretically investigate the local density of states (LDOS) probed by an STM tip of ferromagnetic metals hosting a single adatom and a subsurface impurity. We model the system via the two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian. By using the equation of motion with the relevant Green's functions, we derive analytical expressions for the LDOS of two host types: a surface and a quantum wire. The LDOS reveals Friedel-like oscillations and Fano interference as a function of the STM tip position. These oscillations strongly depend on the host dimension. Interestingly, we find that the spin-dependent Fermi wave numbers of the hosts give rise to spin-polarized quantum beats in the LDOS. Although the LDOS for the metallic surface shows a damped beating pattern, it exhibits the opposite behavior in the quantum wire. Due to this absence of damping, the wire operates as a spatially resolved spin filter with a high efficiency. © 2013 American Physical Society.

The metallic carbides exhibit many novel prototypes of crystalline structure. Among these compounds Th2NiC2 was reported in 1991 as a new carbide which crystallizes in the U2IrC2 prototype structure. In this work we report a reinvestigation of the synthesis of this compound. We find that Th2NiC2 is a new superconductor. Our results suggest that this phase is stable only at high temperatures in the system Th-Ni-C. The substitution of Th by Sc stabilizes the phase and improves the superconducting properties. The highest superconducting critical temperature occurs at 11.2 K with nominal composition Th1.8Sc0.2NiC2. The electronic coefficient determined by specific heat measurements is close to zero. This unusual result can be explained by covalent bonding in the compound.
