Vicarious trial-and-error (VTE) is a term that Muenzinger and Tolman used to describe the rat's conflict-like behavior before responding to choice. Recently, VTE was proposed as a mechanism alternative to the concept of "cognitive map" in accounts of hippocampal function. That is, many phenomena of impaired learning and memory related to hippocampal interventions may be explained by behavioral first principles: reduced conflicting, incipient, pre-choice tendencies to approach and avoid. The nonspatial black-white discrimination learning and VTE behavior of the rat were investigated. Hippocampal-lesioned and sham-lesioned animals were trained for 25 days (20 trials per day) starting at 60 days of age. Each movement of the head from one discriminative stimulus to the other was counted as a VTE instance. Lesioned rats had fewer VTEs than sham controls, and the former learned much more slowly or never learned. After learning, VTE frequency declined. Male and female rats showed no significant differences in VTE behavior or discrimination learning.

We investigated whether juvenile freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygon motoro) can solve spatial tasks by constructing a cognitive map of their environment. Two experimental conditions were run: allocentric and ego-allocentric. Rays were trained to locate food within a four-arm maze placed in a room with visual spatial cues. The feeding location (goal) within the maze (room) remained constant while the starting position varied for the allocentrically but not for the ego-allocentrically trained group. After training, all rays solved the experimental tasks; however, different orientation strategies were used within and between groups. Allocentrically trained rays reached the goal via novel routes starting from unfamiliar locations, while ego-allocentrically trained rays primarily solved the task on the basis of an egocentric turn response. Our data suggest that P. motoro orients by constructing a visual cognitive map of its environment, but also uses egocentric and/or other orientation strategies alone or in combination for spatial orientation, a choice which may be governed by the complexity of the problem. We conclude that spatial memory functions are a general feature of the vertebrate brain.

Estudo de caso único exploratório e descritivo voltado a analisar a indexação em uma das bibliotecas universitárias do SIB/FURG. Os objetivos específicos, delimitados a partir do contexto já citado, foram: a) Identificar e analisar, através de mapeamento cognitivo, os procedimentos metodológicos empregados na indexação nas atividades de análise, síntese e representação da informação; b) Identificar os conceitos/noções com maior importância na percepção da indexadora quanto ao processo de indexação e as relações entre tais conceitos de forma a construir o mapa cognitivo do processo a partir da percepção da indexadora; e c) Descrever e analisar a indexação de livros na unidade em estudo sob aspecto da análise, síntese e representação destes através da aplicação do Protocolo Verbal. As técnicas utilizadas para a coleta de informação no estudo de caso único foram a Self-Q e o Protocolo Verbal, ambas centradas na abordagem qualitativa. Conclui-se, a partir da construção do mapa cognitivo da indexadora, que as noções/conceitos que sustentam sua prática voltam-se, em sua maioria, a aspectos de caráter procedimental. Percebeu-se também que a prática de indexação ocorre desconectada dos princípios de especificidade e exaustividade. Sobre a indexação de livros conclui-se que, na unidade sob estudo, as operações de análise são desenvolvidas de modo empírico através da leitura e interpretação de partes do documento indexado. Identificou-se que o enfoque da prática não recai apenas no documento mas também, no usuário. A análise e síntese ocorrem de forma integrada, sendo que, em alguns momentos, a síntese é desenvolvida a partir do conhecimento dos descritores do tesauro. A delimitação dos conceitos, por sua vez, foi influenciada, por vezes, pelo(a): uso de termos já empregados na unidade em que atua/sistema, presença do descritor no sumário, conhecimento das demandas dos usuários, área de domínio em que indexa e percepção enquanto profissional. Percebeu-se que não existem níveis definidos quanto a exaustividade e especificidade na indexação. Na representação dos conceitos foram identificadas dificuldades ocasionadas pela ausência de relacionamentos entre termos e/ou ausência de termos voltados a área indexada no tesauro empregado. Conclui-se que faz-se necessário o desenvolvimento de uma política de indexação formalizada para basilar a prática desenvolvida no SIB/FURG.

El artículo integra los marcos teóricos de la Geografía de la Percepción y el aprendizaje significativo mediante una secuencia didáctica para la enseñanza de la cartografía en el curso Didáctica de los Estudios Sociales para educación Básica, de la carrera Diplomado en pedagogía con acento en I y II ciclos de la Educación general Básica, Universidad Nacional.  El objetivo general se centró en analizar la utilidad del mapa cognitivo en la enseñanza de la cartografía, para contrastar con otos métodos tradicionales.  Los resultados revelan que las configuraciones espaciales representadas en los mapas cognitivos se asemejan muy poco a las representaciones cartográficas convencionales, no obstante la metodología implementada produce aprendizaje significativoPalabras claves: Geografía de la Percepción-Aprendizaje significativo-Secuencia didáctica-Mapa cognitivo-Enseñanza de la cartografía.Abstract:The article comprises the theoretical frameworks of the Geography of Perception and significant learning by means of a didactic sequence for the teaching of cartography in the Didactic course of Social Studies for Basic education, the Diploma course of study in pedagogy with emphasis on cycles I and II of general Basic Education,  Universidad Nacional.  The general objective is focused on analyzing the usefulness of the cognitive map in the teaching of cartography in order to contrast it other traditional methods. The results reveal that the spatial configurations represented in the cognitive maps bear little resemblance to the conventional cartographic representations. Interest in cognitive pretest methods for evaluating survey questionnaires has been increasing for the last three decades. However, analysing the features of the scientific output in the field can be difficult due to its prevalence in public and private institutes whose main mission is not scientific research. The aim of this research is to characterize the current state of scientific output in the field by means of two bibliometric studies for the period from 1980 to 2007. Study 1 analysed documents obtained from the more commonly used bibliographic databases. Study 2 supplemented the body of documents from Study 1 with documents from non-indexed journals, conference papers, etc. Results show a constant growth in the number of publications. The wide dispersion of publication sources, together with the highlighted role of the public and private institutions as centres of production, can also be identified as relevant characteristics of the scientific output in this field.

Few studies have investigated in vivo changes of the cholinergic basal forebrain in Alzheimer`s disease (AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an at risk stage of AD. Even less is known about alterations of cortical projecting fiber tracts associated with basal forebrain atrophy. In this study, we determined regional atrophy within the basal forebrain in 21 patients with AD and 16 subjects with MCI compared to 20 healthy elderly subjects using deformation-based morphometry of MRI scans. We assessed effects of basal forebrain atrophy on fiber tracts derived from high-resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) using tract-based spatial statistics. We localized significant effects relative to a map of cholinergic nuclei in MRI standard space as determined from a postmortem brain. Patients with AD and MCI subjects showed reduced volumes in basal forebrain areas corresponding to anterior medial and lateral, intermediate and posterior nuclei of the Nucleus basalis of Meynert (NbM) as well as in the diagonal band of Broca nuclei (P < 0.01). Effects in MCI subjects were spatially more restricted than in AD, but occurred at similar locations. The volume of the right antero-lateral NbM nucleus was correlated with intracortical projecting fiber tract integrity such as the corpus callosum, cingulate, and the superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, inferior fronto-occipital, and uncinate fasciculus (P < 0.05, corrected for multiple comparisons). Our findings suggest that a multimodal MRI-DTI approach is supportive to determine atrophy of cholinergic nuclei and its effect on intracortical projecting fiber tracts in AD. Each primary olfactory neuron stochastically expresses one of similar to1000 odorant receptors. The total population of these neurons therefore consists of similar to1,000 distinct subpopulations, each of which are mosaically dispersed throughout one of four semi-annular zones in the nasal cavity. The axons of these different subpopulations are initially intermingled within the olfactory nerve. However, upon reaching the olfactory bulb, they sort out and converge so that axons expressing the same odorant receptor typically target one or two glomeruli. The spatial location of each of these 1800 glomeruli are topographically-fixed in the olfactory bulb and are invariant from animal to animal. Thus, while odorant receptors are expressed mosaically by neurons throughout the olfactory neuroepithelium their axons sort out, converge and target the same glomerulus within the olfactory bulb. How is such precise and reproducible topographic targeting generated? While some of the mechanisms governing the growth cone guidance of olfactory sensory neurons are understood, the cues responsible for homing axons to their target site remain elusive.

Background: Inadequate intraoperative cerebral perfusion has been suggested as a possible cause of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Methods: We investigated 35 patients aged 65 or older undergoing elective major non-cardiac surgery under standardized general anaesthesia (thiopental, sevoflurane, fentanyl, atracurium). Intraoperative cerebral perfusion was monitored with transcranial Doppler, and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Arterial blood pressure was monitored continuously with a Finapres device. Mx, an index allowing continuous monitoring of cerebrovascular autoregulation based on the changes in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and cerebral blood flow velocity was calculated. Mx &gt;0.5 was defined as disturbed cerebrovascular autoregulation. Cognitive function was measured preoperatively and 7 days postoperatively using the CERAD-NAB Plus test battery. A postoperative decline &gt;1 z-score in at least two of the tested domains was defined as POCD. Data are shown as mean &#129;} SD. Results: Mean age was 75 &#129;} 7 yrs. Sixteen patients (46%) developed POCD. These patients were older (77 &#129;} 8 vs 73 &#129;} 7 yrs), had lower MAP (77 &#129;} 12 vs 81 &#129;} 11 mm Hg), lower cerebral tissue oxygenation indices measured by NIRS (66.8 &#129;} 6.0 vs 68.6 &#129;} 4.3%) and less efficient cerebrovascular autoregulation (Mx 0.54 &#129;} 0.17 and 0.44 &#129;} 0.22) than patients without POCD. Disturbed intraoperative cerebrovascular autoregulation was found more often (56 vs 37%) in patients with POCD. However, none of these differences reached statistical significance. Conclusions: Our data show a trend towards subtle changes in intraoperative cerebral perfusion in elderly patients who develop POCD. However, a cause effect relationship must not be assumed and a greater number of patients needs to be investigated patients. However, more patients need to be investigated to confirm and characterize these differences.

Background: Inadequate intraoperative cerebral perfusion and increased serum anticholinergic activity (SAA) have been suggested as possible causes of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Methods: 53 patients aged &gt;65 yrs undergoing elective major surgical procedures under standardized general anaesthesia. Cerebral perfusion was monitored with transcranial Doppler and near-infrared spectroscopy. Mx, an index of cerebral autoregulation was calculated based on the correlation of spontaneous changes inmean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and cerebral blood flow velocity. Cognitive function was measured preoperatively and 7 days postoperatively using the CERAD-Neuropsychological Battery. A postoperative decline &gt;1 z-score in at least 2 cognitive variables was defined as POCD. SAA was measured preoperatively and 7 days postoperatively (data available for 38 patients). CRP was measured at the same time points and 2 days postoperatively. Results: Age was 75_7 yrs (mean_SD). 23 patients (43%) developed POCD. There were no statistical significant differences between patients with POCD and without POCD in age (77_7 vs 73_6 yrs), MAP (74_12 vs 78_11 mmHg), cerebral tissue oxygenation indices (67_6 vs 69_4 %) SAA preoperatively (1.74_1.52 vs 1.74_1.21) and 7 days postoperatively (1.90_1.63 vs 1.84_1.39) and CRP preoperatively (32_72 vs 7_9), 2 days postoperatively (176_129 vs 111_69) and 7days postoperatively (53_43 vs 48_25). Patients with POCD had less efficient autoregulation than patients without POCD (Mx 0.55_0.15 vs 0.45_0.20, p = 0.046). However, the percentage of patients with clearly impaired autoregulation (ie, Mx&gt;0.5) was statistically not different between groups (with POCD: 65%; without POCD: 38%; p = 0.06) but there seems to be a trend. Conclusions: Our data on the association between cerebral perfusion and POCD in elderly patients are inconclusive and more patients need to be investigated. In this small group of patients SAA seems not to be associated with POCD.

OBJECTIVE: An inverse relationship between blood pressure (BP) and cognitive function has been found in adults, but limited data are available in adolescents and young adults. We examined the prospective relation between BP and cognitive function in adolescence. METHODS: We examined the association between BP measured at the ages of 12-15 years in school surveys and cognitive endpoints measured in the Seychelles Child Development Study at ages 17 (n&#8202;=&#8202;407) and 19 (n&#8202;=&#8202;429) years, respectively. We evaluated multiple domains of cognition based on subtests of the Cambridge Neurological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), the Woodcock Johnson Test of Scholastic Achievement (WJTA), the Finger Tapping test (FT) and the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT). We used age, sex and height-specific z-scores of SBP, DBP and mean arterial pressure (MAP). RESULTS: Six out of the 21 cognitive endpoints tested were associated with BP. However, none of these associations were found to hold for both males and females or for different subtests within the same neurodevelopmental domain or for both SBP and DBP. Most of these associations disappeared when analyses were adjusted for selected potential confounding factors such as socio-economic status, birth weight, gestational age, BMI, alcohol consumption, blood glucose, and total n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fats. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings do not support a consistent association between BP and subsequent performance on tests assessing various cognitive domains in adolescents.

As institutions of higher education struggle to stay relevant, competitive, accessible, and flexible, they are scrambling to attend to a shift in focus for new students. This shift involves experiential learning. The purpose of this major research paper was to examine the existing structures, to seek gaps in the experiential learning programs, and to devise a framework to move forward. The specific focus was on experiential learning at Brock University in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. The methodology was underscored with cognitive constructivism and appreciative theory. Data collection involved content analysis steps established by Krippendorff (2004) and Weber (1985). Data analysis involved the four dimensions of reflection designed by LaBoskey, including the purpose, context, content, and procedures. The results developed understandings on the state of formal processes and pathways within service learning. A tool kit was generated that defines service learning and offers an overview of the types of service learning typically employed. The tool kit acts as a reference guide for those interested in implementing experiential learning courses. Importantly, the results also provided 10 key points in experiential learning courses by Emily Allan. A flow chart illustrates the connections among each of the 10 points, and then they are described in full to establish a strategy for the way forward in experiential learning.
