I. Trimethylsilylpotassium reacts with epoxides to give olefins with inversion of stereochemistry. The reaction appears to proceed via the potassium β-silyl alkoxide (2) formed from the S_N2 attack of the silyl anion on the epoxide. Subsequent stereospecific synelimination of 2 affords the olefin of inverted stereo-chemistry. The reaction is convenient and preparatively useful.

The byproduct of the reaction, potassium trimethylsilanolate (17), effectively cleaves hexamethyldisilane to yield trimethylsilylpotassium. Since the latter reagent is generated and reacted in situ with epoxides, the overall reaction can be carried out with less than one equivalent of potassium methoxide.

II. The reaction of aryl halides with trimethylsilyl anions in HMPT provides good yields of aryltrimethylsilanes, useful synthetic intermediates. The choice of metal cation is unimportant. Chlorides and bromides give high yields of silylated products, while iodides give lower yields, with correspondingly increased amounts of reduced products. Arylammonium and arylphosphonium salts also undergo the reaction.

We have permissive evidence for the reaction proceeding via both aryl radical and aryl anion intermediates.

III. Trimethylsilyl and trimethylstannyl methoxycarbene complexes of chromium and tungsten have been prepared. One of these, (CO)_5WC(OMe)SnMe_3, reacts with norbornene at 80° to afford a new olefin polymer. Efforts to effect the alpha-elimination of the nonmetallic carbene ligands have not yet been successful. Reactions of these carbene complexes with acetone have been investigated.

Bronsted acid-base ionic liquids (GILs) based on guanidine and acetic acid are efficient reaction media for palladium-catalyzed Heck reactions. They offer the advantages of high activity and reusability. GIL2 plays multiple roles in the reaction: it could act as solvent, as a strong base to facilitate beta-hydride elimination, and as a ligand to stabilize activated Pd species.

The first thiazolium gold(III) compound that qualifies as an ionic liquid has been prepared and crystallographically characterized. Hydration of phenylacetylene with this compound as catalyst precursor in ionic liquids indicates that gold(Ill)based ionic liquids could serve both as solvents and catalysts for organic transformations. The potential re-use of catalysts is an advantage achieved by recycling the ionic liquid phase. Various imidazolium-derived ionic liquids as well as the new thiazolium compound can be converted into gold carbene complexes by sequential deprotonation and coordination, opening the way for in situ catalyst tailoring. This thesis describes a method involving the preparation of an L-proline-derived imidazolone protected with an N-triethylsilyl group that undergoes diastereoselective lithiation followed by electrophile quench to give C5-substituted products with syn stereochemistry. The N-silylated derivatives may be more easily N-deprotected as compared to previous N-t-Bu analogues to give secondary ureas. These may serve as precursors to N-phenyl chiral bicyclic guanidines or as NHC precursors for synthesis of corresponding complexes.

Copolymers of norbornene (NBE) with norbomadiene (NBD) were obtained via ROMP with [RuCl2(PPh3)(2)(L)] type complexes as initiators (1 for L = piperidine and 2 for L = 3,5-Me(2)piperidine). The reactions were performed using a fixed quantity of NBE (5000 equivalents/[Ru]) for different concentrations of NBD (500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 equivalents/ [Ru]) in CHCl3, initiated with ethyl diazoacetate at room temperature. The presence of NBD in the NBE chains was characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR. Whereas the copolymer microstructure was influenced neither by the NBD quantity nor by the initiator type, the N-n and PDI values were improved when increasing the NBD quantity in the medium. When raising the NBD amount, DMA results indicated increased cross-linking with increasing T-g and E ' storage modulus, as well as the fact that SEM micrographs indicated decreased pore sizes in the porous isolated copolymers. A long-standing challenge in transition metal catalysis is selective C–C bond coupling of simple feedstocks, such as carbon monoxide, ethylene or propylene, to yield value-added products. This work describes efforts toward selective C–C bond formation using early- and late-transition metals, which may have important implications for the production of fuels and plastics, as well as many other commodity chemicals.

The industrial Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process converts synthesis gas (syngas, a mixture of CO + H2) into a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and oxygenates. Well-defined homogeneous catalysts for F-T may provide greater product selectivity for fuel-range liquid hydrocarbons compared to traditional heterogeneous catalysts. The first part of this work involved the preparation of late-transition metal complexes for use in syngas conversion. We investigated C–C bond forming reactions via carbene coupling using bis(carbene)platinum(II) compounds, which are models for putative metal–carbene intermediates in F-T chemistry. It was found that C–C bond formation could be induced by either (1) chemical reduction of or (2) exogenous phosphine coordination to the platinum(II) starting complexes. These two mild methods afforded different products, constitutional isomers, suggesting that at least two different mechanisms are possible for C–C bond formation from carbene intermediates. These results are encouraging for the development of a multicomponent homogeneous catalysis system for the generation of higher hydrocarbons.

A second avenue of research focused on the design and synthesis of post-metallocene catalysts for olefin polymerization. The polymerization chemistry of a new class of group 4 complexes supported by asymmetric anilide(pyridine)phenolate (NNO) pincer ligands was explored. Unlike typical early transition metal polymerization catalysts, NNO-ligated catalysts produce nearly regiorandom polypropylene, with as many as 30-40 mol % of insertions being 2,1-inserted (versus 1,2-inserted), compared to <1 mol % in most metallocene systems. A survey of model Ti polymerization catalysts suggests that catalyst modification pathways that could affect regioselectivity, such as C–H activation of the anilide ring, cleavage of the amine R-group, or monomer insertion into metal–ligand bonds are unlikely. A parallel investigation of a Ti–amido(pyridine)phenolate polymerization catalyst, which features a five- rather than a six-membered Ti–N chelate ring, but maintained a dianionic NNO motif, revealed that simply maintaining this motif was not enough to produce regioirregular polypropylene; in fact, these experiments seem to indicate that only an intact anilide(pyridine)phenolate ligated-complex will lead to regioirregular polypropylene. As yet, the underlying causes for the unique regioselectivity of anilide(pyridine)phenolate polymerization catalysts remains unknown. Further exploration of NNO-ligated polymerization catalysts could lead to the controlled synthesis of new types of polymer architectures.

Finally, we investigated the reactivity of a known Ti–phenoxy(imine) (Ti-FI) catalyst that has been shown to be very active for ethylene homotrimerization in an effort to upgrade simple feedstocks to liquid hydrocarbon fuels through co-oligomerization of heavy and light olefins. We demonstrated that the Ti-FI catalyst can homo-oligomerize 1-hexene to C12 and C18 alkenes through olefin dimerization and trimerization, respectively. Future work will include kinetic studies to determine monomer selectivity by investigating the relative rates of insertion of light olefins (e.g., ethylene) vs. higher α-olefins, as well as a more detailed mechanistic study of olefin trimerization. Our ultimate goal is to exploit this catalyst in a multi-catalyst system for conversion of simple alkenes into hydrocarbon fuels.

A computational study of the interaction half-sandwich metal fragments (metal=Re/W, electron count=d(6)), containing linear nitrosyl (NO+), carbon monoxide (CO), trifluorophosphine (PF3), N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with alkanes are conducted using density functional theory employing the hybrid meta-GGA functional (M06). Electron deficiency on the metal increases with the ligand in the order NHC < CO < PF3 < NO+. Electron-withdrawing ligands like NO+ lead to more stable alkane complexes than NHC, a strong electron donor. Energy decomposition analysis shows that stabilization is due to orbital interaction involving charge transfer from the alkane to the metal. Reactivity and dynamics of the alkane fragment are facilitated by electron donors on the metal. These results match most of the experimental results known for CO and PF3 complexes. The study suggests activation of alkane in metal complexes to be facile with strong donor ligands like NHC. (C) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The monoanionic Ind-NHC species bond to the central metal ion in a eta(5):kappa(1) constrained geometry configuration (CGC) mode, which combine with the two cis-located alkyl moieties to form a tetrahedron ligand core, leading to the chirality of the complexes. Scission of a supramolecular polymer-metal complex can be carried out using collapsing cavitation bubbles created by ultrasound. Although the most plausible scission mechanism of the coordinative bonds is through mechanical force, the influence of radicals and high hot-spot temperatures on scission has to be considered. A silver(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene complex was exposed to 20 kHz ultrasound in argon, nitrogen, methane, and isobutane saturated toluene. Scission percentages were almost equal under argon, nitrogen, and methane. Radical production differs by a factor of 10 under these gases, indicating that radical production is not a significant contributor to the scission process. A model to describe the displacement of the bubble wall, strain rates, and temperature in the gas shows that critical strain rates for coil-to-stretch transition, needed for scission, are achieved at reactor temperatures of 298 K, an acoustic pressure of 1.2 x 10(5) Pa, and an acoustic frequency of 20 kHz. Lower scission percentages were measured under isobutane, which also shows lower strain rates in model simulations. The activation of the polymer-metal complexes in toluene under the influence of ultrasound occurs through mechanical force.
