Tutkielman päätavoite on tutkia, miten tulospalkkaus voidaan integroida Balanced Scorecard-perusteiseen tulosohjaukseen ja analysoida miten kyseiset asiat on huomioitu Vakuutusyhtiö Sammon mallissa. Tutkielman empiirinen osa on rakennettu pääosin haastatteluihin pohjautuen. Tutkimusmetodologia on toiminta-analyyttinen ja haastattelut suoritettiin teemahaastatteluina. Tutkimuksessa todetaan, että ei ole yhtä ainoaa oikeaa tapaa yhdistää tulospalkkaus Balanced Scorecardiin. Tapa, miten tulospalkkaus liitetään Balanced Scorecardiin riippuu yrityksestä, sen tavoitteista ja niistä johdetuista kriittisistä menestystekijöistä. Tulospalkkaus on perusteltua yhdistää Balanced Scorecardiin paitsi huomion kiinnittämiseksi yrityksen strategisiin tavoitteisiin myös sen suoritusta ohjaavan vaikutuksen vuoksi. Integroitaessa tulospalkkausta Balanced Scorecardiin todettiin myös casetarkastelussa kriittisiksi alueiksi kommunikointi, onnistunut tavoiteasetanta, mittarit, järjestelmät ja esimiestyöskentely.

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa analysoidaan neljästä eri näkökulmasta koostuvan Balanced Scorecardin soveltamista strategisena ohjaustyökaluna. Tavoitteena on Balanced Scorecardin toteuttamiseen liittyvän strategisen päätöksenteon tukeminen. Teoriaosuus on toteutettu kirjallisuuden pohjalta ja empiirinen aineisto on koottu lähinnä case-yrityksen omasta Balanced Scorecard -projektista. Case-yritys on maailmanlaajuisem Stora Enso -konsernin täysin omistama täyden palvelun aaltopahviratkaisuihin erikoistunut tytäryhtiökonserni. Balanced Scorecard -projekti yrityksessä on ollu käynnissä jo parin vuoden ajan ja nykyään käytössä on myös atk-pohjainen Balanced Scorecard -ohjelmisto. Tulevaisuudessa tavoitteena on Balanced Scorecardin ja siihen liityvän ohjelmiston ottaminen käyttöön koko konsernin kaikilla organisaatiotasoilla. Tutkimuksen tuloksena mallin todetaan teorian lisäksi myös käytännössä kokoavan hajanaiset tiedot tiiviiksi ja johdonmukaiseksi kokonaisuudeksi. Balanced Scorecardin onnistuminen riippuu paljolti työntekijöiden sitoutumisesta ja johdon halusta aikaansaada muutoksia. Oikein sovellettuna Balanced Scorecard on tehokas kommunikointiväline, joka kehittyy jatkuvasti organisaation mukana. Suurimpana ongelmana tai haasteena Suomessa nähdään mallin sisäistäminen alemmilla organisaatiotasoilla. Tutkimuksessa tarjotaan tähän ratkaisuksi uuden suomenkielisen käsitteen lanseeraamista ja parempaa tiedottamista esimerkiksi intranetin välityksellä.

The research described in this thesis examines the characteristics, the benefits and the challenges associated with the implementation of management accounting systems in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Applied to the CSR context, management accounting relates to the identification, elaboration and communication of information about an organization's interactions with the society and the environment. Based on this information, firms are able to make decisions to achieve social and environmental objectives and provide evidence justifying the benefits and the costs of such actions. The study begins by focusing on green management and exploring the characteristics of Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) systems within firms. The first chapter informs the reader about the growing body of EMA research and reveals unexplored relevant aspects that need to be further investigated. The work also emphasizes the importance of developing new theoretical hypotheses and appropriate research designs to empirically tackle new aspects of EMA and gain understanding on the use of these practices. Subsequently, given the acknowledged importance of control systems in influencing the behaviour of individuals within organizations, the remaining two chapters of the dissertation focus on the functioning of CSR-linked incentives assigned to employees in the form of compensation plans. The second chapter examines the determinants influencing corporate provision of incentives for the attainment of environmental targets. Empirical analysis of a sample of international firms reveals that companies are likely to use green incentives as mechanisms to increase the efficacy in contracting with their employees as well as to respond to social influences. Finally, the third chapter investigates the effectiveness of contracting associated with the use of CSR-linked executive compensation. Empirical analysis of a sample of US-based companies shows that corporate choice to tie senior executives' pay to CSR targets promotes the firm's CSR performance. Cette thèse examine les caractéristiques, avantages et défis associés à l'utilisation des systèmes de contrôle de gestion dans le domaine de la Responsabilité Sociale des Entreprises (RSE). Dans le contexte de la RSE, les activités du contrôle de gestion impliquent l'identification, l'élaboration et la communication d'informations qui concernent les interactions des organisations avec la société et l'environnement. Avec ces informations les entreprises sont en mesure de prendre des décisions visant à atteindre les objectifs sociaux et environnementaux de l'organisation et de documenter les bénéfices et coûts de ces actions. Dès le début, la thèse se concentre sur les caractéristiques des systèmes de contrôle de gestion environnementale au sein des entreprises. Le premier chapitre passe en revue la littérature existante et révèle des aspects inexplorés. Pour ce faire, le travail suggère le développement de nouvelles théories ainsi que l'utilisation de méthodes appropriées. Ces dernières doivent permettre d'aborder empiriquement de nouveaux aspects des systèmes de contrôle environnemental et faciliter la compréhension sur l'utilisation de ces pratiques. Considérant l'importance des systèmes de contrôle pour influencer le comportement des individus au sein des organisations, la suite du travail se concentre sur le fonctionnement des contrats de rémunération des employées liées aux résultats de la RSE. Plus particulièrement, le deuxième chapitre examine les facteurs qui influencent la décision des entreprises d'assigner des objectifs environnementaux aux employées. L'analyse empirique d'un échantillon d'entreprises internationales montre que les entreprises sont susceptibles d'utiliser des mécanismes incitatifs écologiques pour augmenter l'efficacité des contrats ainsi que pour répondre aux influences sociales. Finalement, le troisième chapitre analyse l'efficacité des contrats de rémunération des dirigeants liés aux résultats de la RSE. L'analyse empirique d'un échantillon de sociétés américaines indique que le choix de l'entreprise de lier la rémunération des dirigeants à des objectifs de la RSE favorise la performance RSE de l'organisation.

Há tempo busca-se um aperfeiçoamento do aparelho estatal no Brasil e, ao longo dos anos. os governos que se sucedem no poder vêm buscando alternativas para melhorar a eficiência do Estado. Mais recentemente, no Governo do Presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, foi instituído o Programa Nacional de Gestão Pública e Desburocratização (Gespública), que incentiva órgãos públicos a implementarem sistemas de gestão, participando de um processo de avaliação com premiações para as melhores práticas gerenciais voltadas à qualidade dos serviços aos cidadãos. No âmbito da Marinha do Brasil o Programa foi adaptado às peculiaridade da Força e nasceu, assim, o Programa Netuno que visa à institucionalização de boas práticas de gestão, permitindo que as organizações da Marinha do Brasil busquem a melhoria contínua dos processos inerentes a suas atividades. Uma das ferramentas que se pretende incorporar ao Programa é o Balanced Scorecard, geralmente utilizado na gestão estratégica e na avaliação do desempenho de organizações. Portanto, com a finalidade de contribuir para o aprimoramento da eficiência da gestão das Organizações Militares da Marinha do Brasil, este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as vantagens, desvantagens e dificuldades da implementação do Modelo de Gestão Balanced Scorecard (BSC), tomando como base as experiências bem sucedidas de outras organizações da iniciativa privada e pública, bem como do Exército Brasileiro, que já implementaram e utilizam o modelo.

This research explores the links between the strategies adopted by companies and the mechanisms used to control the organisation. This is not seen as a one way process with the control system following from the strategy but rather as an interactive process between the control systems, the environment and the business strategy. The main proposition of the research, derived from a review of the relevant literature, is that the dimensions of Business Pro-Activity and Environmental Change provide a plausible explanation of the reasons why companies need to adopt different strategies in order to be successful in different markets. A model is proposed which links these dimensions with the business strategy, organisational structure, strategic planning system and management control systems. The model is used as a framework for analysing four companies in order to further our understanding of these interactions and the mechanisms which act to both promote and resist change. Whilst it is not suggested that the model in its present form is a perfect instrument it has, during the course of this research, proved to be an appropriate framework for analysing the various mechanisms used by four companies to formulate and implement their strategies. The research reveals that these should not be viewed independently but as a balanced system.

The purpose of this dissertation is to increase the understanding and knowledge of field sales management control systems (i.e. sales managers monitoring, directing, evaluating and rewarding activities) and their potential consequences on salespeople. This topic is important because research conducted in the past has indicated that the choice of control system type can on the other hand have desirable consequences, such as high levels of motivation and performance, and on the other hand leadto harmful unintended consequences, such as opportunistic or unethical behaviors. Despite the fact that marketing and sales management control systems have been under rigorous research for over two decades, it still is at a very early stage of development, and several inconsistencies can be found in the research results. This dissertation argues that these inconsistencies are mainly derived from misspecification of the level of analysis in the past research. These different levels of analysis (i.e. strategic, tactical, and operational levels) involve very different decision-making situations regarding the control and motivation of sales force, which should be taken into consideration when conceptualizing the control. Moreover, the study of salesperson consequences of a field sales management control system is actually a cross-level phenomenon, which means that at least two levels of analysis are simultaneously involved. The results of this dissertation confirm the need to re-conceptualize the field sales management control system concept. It provides empirical evidence for the assertion that control should be conceptualized with more details atthe tactical/operational level of analysis than at the strategic levelof analysis. Moreover, the results show that some controls are more efficiently communicated to field salespeople than others. It is proposed that this difference is due to different purposes of control; some controls aredesigned for influencing salespersons' behavior (aim at motivating) whereas some controls are designed to aid decision-making (aim at providing information). According to the empirical results of this dissertation, the both types of controls have an impact to the sales force, but this impactis not as strong as expected. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities of utilizing business intelligence (BI)systems in management control (MC). The topic of this study is explored trough four researchquestions. Firstly, what kind of management control systems (MCS) use or could use the data and information enabled by the BI system? Secondly, how the BI system is or could be utilized? Thirdly, has BI system enabled new forms of control or changed old ones? The fourth and final research question is whether the BI system supports some forms of control that the literature has not thought of, or is the BI system not used for some forms of control the literature suggests it should be used? The study is conducted as an extensive case study. Three different organizations were interviewed for the study. For the theoretical basis of the study, central theories in the field of management control are introduced. The term business intelligence is discussed in detail and the mechanisms for governance of business intelligence are presented. A literature analysis of the uses of BI for management control is introduced. The theoretical part of the study ends in the construction of a framework for business intelligence in management control. In the empirical part of the study the case organizations, their BI systems, and the ways they utilize these systems for management control are presented. The main findings of the study are that BI systems can be utilized in the fields suggested in the literature, namely in planning, cybernetic, reward, boundary, and interactive control. The systems are used both as the data or information feeders and directly as the tools. Using BI systems has also enabled entirely new forms of control in the studied organizations, most significantly in the area of interactive control. They have also changed the old control systems by making the information more readily available to the whole organization. No evidence of the BI systems being used for forms of control that the literature had not suggested was found. The systems were mostly used for cybernetic control and interactive control, whereas the support for other types of control was not as prevalent. The main contribution of the study to the existing literature is the insight provided into how BI systems, both theoretically and empirically, are used for management control. The framework for business intelligence in management control presented in the study can also be utilized in further studies about the subject.

As organizações contemporâneas apresentam elevado grau de complexidade. A extensa cadeia de processos deve ser gerenciada de forma integrada e requer descentralização da tomada de decisões para assegurar respostas ágeis aos estímulos do ambiente competitivo. Este contexto demanda a criação de ferramentas de gestão que apoiem os gestores no atingimento dos objetivos estratégicos globais das empresas, como o modelo de referência analisado neste trabalho, que alia as métricas de gestão da cadeia de suprimentos com o conceito do Balanced Scorecard. Este trabalho objetivou, por um lado, avaliar a atual arquitetura de indicadores de desempenho da unidade operacional (UO) de uma grande distribuidora de combustíveis à luz deste modelo de referência e, por outro, testar o modelo de referência através do estudo de caso quanto à sua universalidade de aplicação por diferentes empresas. Dentre os resultados obtidos, destacam-se: a arquitetura de indicadores atual da UO está desequilibrada nas dimensões do BSC – comparada à dimensão financeira que apresenta 7 indicadores, a dimensão clientes apresenta somente 2 indicadores; identificou-se uma lacuna de 50% na relação de indicadores de desempenho da UO quando a confrontamos com o modelo de referência; para as lacunas identificadas, desenvolveu-se um plano de ação para sua incorporação à arquitetura da UO; constatou-se que 24% das métricas do modelo de referência não se aplicam à realidade da UO e; o modelo de referência não abarca itens relevantes como treinamento, engajamento e Saúde, Meio Ambiente e Segurança (SMS), primordial para a realidade da empresa, que acompanha atualmente 6 indicadores de SMS. Verificou-se, também, que o uso de um modelo de referência genérico não é o mais adequado por causa das complexidades intrínsecas de cada uma das organizações. Entretanto, o mesmo pode ser usado como um guia para verificação de suficiência dos indicadores pré-selecionados por uma determinada empresa porque indica lacunas que podem não ser percebidas no processo de seleção.

Organisations are becoming increasingly aware of the need for management information systems, due largely to the changing environment and a continuous process of globalisation. All of this means that managers need to adapt the structures of their organisations to the changes and, therefore, to plan, control and manage better. The Spanish public university cannot avoid this changing (demographic, economic and social changes) and globalising (among them the convergence of European qualifications) environment, to which we must add the complex organisation structure, characterised by a high dispersion of authority for decision making in different collegiate and unipersonal organs. It seems obvious that these changes must have repercussions on the direction, organisation and management structures of those public higher education institutions, and it seems natural that, given this environment, the universities must adapt their present management systems to the demand by society for the quality and suitability of the services they provide.

We studied the situation in Spanish public universities regarding the use of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), as an instrument of control and strategic management. Also, we studied its application to the School of Mines and Energy at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The main advantage of the BSC is that improves the organizational structure of the workplace and the achievement of the objectives that ensure long-term success. First we review the strategy for success used in the Spanish educational system and specifically in the Spanish public universities. Then using the BSC and applying the main strategic lines for the successful management of the School of Mines and Energy at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The strategic lines affect all the college groups and the success of the BSC tool is to increase communication between the faculties, personal auxiliary, students and society in general that make up the university. First we performed a SWOT analysis (DAFO in Spanish) there are proposed different perspectives that focus the long-term strategic objectives. The BSC is designed based on the strategic objectives that set the direction through using indicators and initiatives, the goals are achieved up to the programmed schedule. In the perspective of teaching, objectives are set to update facilities and increase partnerships with other universities and businesses, encouraging ongoing training of staff and improved coordination and internal communication. The internal process perspective aims at improving the marketing, the promotion of the international dimension of the school through strategic alliances, better mobility for students and professors and improved teaching and research quality results. It continues with improving the image of the school between customer?s perspective, the quality perceived by students and the loyalty of the teaching staff by retaining talent. Finally, the financial perspective which should contain costs without harming the quality, improving the employability of students and achieve relevant jobs at teaching and research through international measurement standards.

In this paper we aim to identify and analyze a set of variables that can potentially influence the adoption and knowledge of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in Portugal. Hypotheses were tested using data obtained from a questionnaire sent to 591 publicly-owned organizations (local governments, municipal corporations and hospitals) and 549 privately-owned organizations (large companies and small and medium enterprises) in Portugal. The results allow us to conclude that although the majority of respondents claimed to know the BSC, its use in Portugal is still limited and very recent, particularly in the public sector organizations. However, it should be noted that its use has increased in Portugal in recent years. The study also reveals that in spite of the noticeable differences between public and private sector, the BSC is used in the public sector after a few adjustments to the traditional model. Using as theoretical framework the contingency and institutional theories, we found that decentralization, vertical differentiation and the degree of higher education are associated with the implementation of the BSC.

Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is recognized, both in the academic and business world, as one of the most powerful strategic management accounting tools. Thus, we launched in October 2004 a questionnaire survey applied to the 250 largest Portuguese companies aiming at observing the knowledge, use, and companies’ characteristics which are adopting this management instrument. Despite the majority of the companies inquired recognize BSC more as a strategic management tool than a performance valuation system, the results show that there is still a reduced and recent utilization of BSC in Portugal. Similarly to other countries Portugal is still in the initial state of BSC utilization. Our work has shown that the companies that use more BSC belong mainly to the secondary sector of industry. Nevertheless, unlike other studies, we did not get empirical evidence on the influence of variables such as geographical localization, dimension and internationalization, in the use and knowledge of BSC in Portugal.
