PURPOSE: The biokinetics and dosimetry of (111)In-DOTA-NOC-ATE (NOCATE), a high-affinity ligand of SSTR-2 and SSTR-5, and (111)In-DTPA-octreotide (Octreoscan?, OCTREO) were compared in the same patients. METHODS: Seventeen patients (10 men, 7 women; mean age 60 years), referred for an OCTREO scan for imaging of a neuroendocrine tumour (15), thymoma (1) or medullary thyroid carcinoma (1), agreed to undergo a second study with NOCATE. Whole-body anterior-posterior scans were recorded 0.5 (100 % reference scan), 4, 24 and 48 h (17 patients) and 120 h (5 patients) after injection. In 16 patients the OCTREO scan (178 ± 15 MBq) was performed 16 ± 5 days before the NOCATE scan (108 ± 14 MBq) with identical timing; 1 patient had the NOCATE scan before the OCTREO scan. Blood samples were obtained from 14 patients 5 min to 48 h after injection. Activities expressed as percent of the initial (reference) activity in the whole body, lung, kidney, liver, spleen and blood were fitted to biexponential or single exponential functions. Dosimetry was performed using OLINDA/EXM. RESULTS: Initial whole-body, lung and kidney activities were similar, but retention of NOCATE was higher than that of OCTREO. Liver and spleen uptakes of NOCATE were higher from the start (p < 0.001) and remained so over time. Whole-body activity showed similar α and β half-lives, but the β fraction of NOCATE was double that of OCTREO. Blood T (1/2)β for NOCATE was longer (19 vs. 6 h). As a result, the effective dose of NOCATE (105 μSv/MBq) exceeded that of OCTREO (52 μSv/MBq), and the latter result was similar to the ICRP 106 value of 54 μSv/MBq. Differential activity measurement in blood cells and plasma showed an average of <5 % of NOCATE and OCTREO attached to globular blood components. CONCLUSION: NOCATE showed a slower clearance from normal tissues and its effective dose was roughly double that of OCTREO.

111 patients with acute leukemia, including 29 children, were classified according to the surface markers and cytochemistry of their blasts. The acute leukemias were separated into two majors groups (lymphoid and non-lymphoid) depending on the presence or absence of specific lymphoid markers. On the basis of these criteria a correlation of 94% with the hematological diagnosis was obtained. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was divisible into three sub-groups: 11 cases expressing T-cell specific markers were classified as T-ALL and 33 cases expressing the common ALL antigen (CALLA) as c-ALL. 18 of the latter expressed an additional marker, DSA (Daudi surface antigen), splitting c-ALL cases in two subgroups. Cytochemistry of the cases lacking specific surface markers (n = 67) served to diagnose 41 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases and 8 monoblastic leukemias. The remaining 18 cases could not be classified. The presence of absence of HLD-DR (Ia) antigens served to subdivide AML into two major subgroups. The prognostic significance of these new diagnostic splits is under active study.

The self-assembled growth of GaN nanorods on Si (111) substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy under nitrogen-rich conditions is investigated. An amorphous silicon nitride layer is formed in the initial stage of growth that prevents the formation of a GaN wetting layer. The nucleation time was found to be strongly influenced by the substrate temperature and was more than 30 min for the applied growth conditions. The observed tapering and reduced length of silicon-doped nanorods is explained by enhanced nucleation on nonpolar facets and proves Ga-adatom diffusion on nanorod sidewalls as one contribution to the axial growth. The presence of Mg leads to an increased radial growth rate with a simultaneous decrease of the nanorod length and reduces the nucleation time for high Mg concentrations.

The occurrence of heterostructures of cubic silicon/hexagonal silicon as disks defined along the nanowire (111) growth direction is reviewed in detail for Si nanowires obtained using Cu as catalyst. Detailed measurements on the structural properties of both semiconductor phases and their interface are presented. We observe that during growth, lamellar twinning on the cubic phase along the (111) direction is generated. Consecutive presence of twins along the (111) growth direction was found to be correlated with the origin of the local formation of the hexagonal Si segments along the nanowires, which define quantum wells of hexagonal Si diamond. Finally, we evaluate and comment on the consequences of the twins and wurtzite in the final electronic properties of the wires with the help of the predicted energy band diagram.

We present the result of polar angle resolved x¿ray photoemission spectroscopy on Al(111)/O and cluster calculations of the O(1s) binding energy (BE) for various model situations. In the experimental data two O(1s) peaks are observed, separated by 1.3 eV. The angular behavior (depth¿resolution) could indicate that the lower BE peak is associated with an O atom under the surface, and the higher BE peak with an O atom above the surface. Equally, it could indicate oxygen islands on the surface where the perimeter atoms have a higher O(1s) BE than the interior atoms. The cluster calculations show that the former interpretation cannot be correct, since an O ads below the surface has a higher calculated O(1s) BE than one above. Cluster calculations simulating oxygen islands are, however, consistent with the experimental data.

The interaction of atomic hydrogen with C4H9, Si4H9, and Ge4H9 model clusters has been studied using all-electron and pseudopotential ab initio Hartree-Fock computations with basis sets of increasing flexibility. The results show that the effect of polarization functions is important in order to reproduce the experimental findings, but their inclusion only for the atoms directly involved in the chemisorption bond is usually sufficient. For the systems H-C4H9 and H-Si4H9 all-electron and pseudopotential results are in excellent agreement when basis sets of comparable quality are used. Besides, semiempirical modified-neglect-of-differential-overlap computations provide quite reliable results both for diamond and silicon and have been used to investigate larger model clusters. The results confirm the local nature of chemisorption and further justify the use of minimal X4H9 model clusters.

Interaction models of atomic Al with Si4H9, Si4H7, and Si6H9 clusters have been studied to simulate Al chemisorption on the Si(111) surface in the atop, fourfold atop, and open sites. Calculations were carried out using nonempirical pseudopotentials in the framework of the ab initio Hartree-Fock procedure. Equilibrium bond distances, binding energies for adsorption, and vibrational frequencies of the adatoms are calculated. Several basis sets were used in order to show the importance of polarization effects, especially in the binding energies. Final results show the importance of considering adatom-induced relaxation effects to specify the order of energy stabilities for the three different sites, the fourfold atop site being the preferred one, in agreement with experimental findings.

The interaction of atomic F and Cl with Si4H9 and Ge4H9 cluster models has been studied by using ab initio pseudopotentials and basis sets of increasing complexity. The results show that the effect of d orbitals is important in order to reproduce the experimental findings. However, the use of polarization functions in the atoms which are directly involved in the chemisorption bond leads to results which are very close to those obtained using extended basis sets. The local nature of the chemisorption bond is also interpreted by means of a Mulliken population analysis. For F-Si4H9 and Cl-Si4H9 the present results are in good agreement with previous ab initio all-electron calculations, and for the chemisorption of Cl on Si(111) and Ge(111) surfaces, good agreement is found with respect to the available experimental results as well as with previous slab calculations based on the local-density-functional formalism.

Chemisorption of group-III metal adatoms on Si(111) and Ge(111) has been studied through the ab initio Hartree-Fock method including nonempirical pseudopotentials and using cluster models to simulate the surface. Three different high-symmetry sites (atop, eclipsed, and open) have been considered by using X4H9, X4H7, and X6H9 (X=Si,Ge) cluster models. In a first step, ideal surface geometries have been used. Metal-induced reconstruction upon chemisorption has also been taken into account. Equilibrium distances, binding energies, and vibrational frequencies have been obtained and compared with available experimental data. From binding-energy considerations, the atop and eclipsed sites seem to be the most favorable ones and thus a coadsorption picture may be suggested. Group-III metals exhibit a similar behavior and the same is true for Si(111) and Ge(111) surfaces when chemisorption is considered.

The O 1s x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectrum for Al(111)/O at 300 K shows two components whose behavior as a function of time and variation of detection angle are consistent with either (a) a surface species represented by the higher binding-energy (BE) component and a subsurface species represented by the lower BE component, or (b) small close-packed oxygen islands with the interior atoms represented by the lower BE component and the perimeter atoms by the higher BE component. We have modeled both situations using ab initio Hartree-Fock wave functions for clusters of Al and O atoms. For an O atom in a threefold site, it was found that a below-surface position gave a higher O 1s BE than an above-surface position, incompatible with interpretation (a). This change in the O 1s BE could arise because the bond for O to Al may have a more covalent character when the O is below the surface than when it is above the surface. We present evidence consistent with this view. An O adatom island with all the O atoms in threefold sites gives calculated O 1s BE's which are significantly higher for the perimeter O atoms. Further, the results for an isolated O island without the Al substrate present also give higher BE¿s for the perimeter atoms. Both these results are consistent with interpretation (b). Published scanning-tunneling-microscopy data supports the suggestion that the chemisorbed state consists of small, close-packed islands, whereas the presence of two vibrational modes in high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy data has been interpreted as representing surface and subsurface oxygen atoms. In light of the present results, we suggest that a vibrational interpretation in terms of interior and perimeter adatoms should be considered.

By means of the ab initio cluster-model approach, we present theoretical evidence for two different mechanisms of bonding of atomic Al to Si(111). On the atop site (T1) the interaction of atomic Al to Si(111) is characteristic of an ionic bond whereas interaction above the threefold eclipsed site (T4) leads to the formation of a typical covalent bond. Moreover, both sites have a similar interaction energy if electronic correlation effects are included. While the conclusions regarding the nature of the chemisorption bond in the two sites do not depend either on the cluster-model size, the kind of embedding hydrogen atoms used, or the quality of the wave function (Hartree-Fock or configuration interaction), the chemisorption energy depends strongly on the wave function used. In fact, inclusion of correlation energy is necessary to properly describe the interaction energies.

The performance of different correlation functionals has been tested for alkali metals, Li to Cs, interacting with cluster models simulating different active sites of the Si(111) surface. In all cases, the ab initio Hartree-Fock density has been obtained and used as a starting point. The electronic correlation energy is then introduced as an a posteriori correction to the Hartree-Fock energy using different correlation functionals. By making use of the ionic nature of the interaction and of different dissociation limits we have been able to prove that all functionals tested introduce the right correlation energy, although to a different extent. Hence, correlation functionals appear as an effective and easy way to introduce electronic correlation in the ab initio Hartree-Fock description of the chemisorption bond in complex systems where conventional configuration interaction techniques cannot be used. However, the calculated energies may differ by some tens of eV. Therefore, these methods can be employed to get a qualitative idea of how important correlation effects are, but they have some limitations if accurate binding energies are to be obtained.
