With a 41-society sample of 9990 managers and professionals, we used hierarchical linear modeling to investigate the impact of both macro-level and micro-level predictors on subordinate influence ethics. While we found that both macro-level and micro-level predictors contributed to the model definition, we also found global agreement for a subordinate influence ethics hierarchy. Thus our findings provide evidence that developing a global model of subordinate ethics is possible, and should be based upon multiple criteria and multilevel variables. MCM-41 samples of various pore dimensions are synthesized. Plotting of nitrogen adsorption data at 77 K versus the statistical film thickness (comparison plot) reveals three distinct stages, with a characteristic of two points of inflection. The steep intermediate stage caused by capillary condensation occurred in the highly uniform mesopores. From the slopes of the sections before and after the condensation, the surface area of the mesopores is calculated. The linear portion of the last section is extrapolated to the adsorption axis of the comparison plot, and this intercept is used to obtain the volume of the mesopores. From the surface area and pore volume, average mesopore diameter is calculated, and the value thus obtained is in good agreement with the pore dimension obtained from powder X-ray diffraction measurements. The principle of the calculation as well as problems associated are discussed in detail.

A comprehensive study was conducted on mesoporous MCM-41. Spectroscopic examinations demonstrated that three types of silanol groups, i.e., single, (SiO)(3)Si-OH, hydrogen-bonded, (SiO)(3)Si-OH-OH-Si(SiO)(3), and geminal, (SiO)(2)Si(OH)(2), can be observed. The number of silanol groups/nm(2), alpha(OH), as determined by NMR, varies between 2.5 and 3.0 depending on the template-removal methods. All these silanol groups were found to be the active sites for adsorption of pyridine with desorption energies of 91.4 and 52.2 kJ mol(-1), respectively. However, only free silanol groups (involving single and geminal silanols) are highly accessible to the silylating agent, chlorotrimethylsilane. Silylation can modify both the physical and chemical properties of MCM-41.

The current therapy of acute pulmonary embolism is focused on removing the mechanical obstruction of the pulmonary vessels. However, accumulating evidence suggests that pulmonary vasoconstriction drives many of the hemodynamic changes found in this condition. We examined the effects of stimulation of soluble guanylate cyclase with BAY 41-2272 (5-Cyclopropyl-2-[1-(2-fluoro-benzyl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-3-yl]-pyrimidin-4-ylamine) in an anesthetized dog model of acute pulmonary embolism. Hemodynamic and arterial blood gas evaluations were performed in non-embolized dogs treated with vehicle (N = 5), and in embolized dogs (intravenous injections of microspheres) that received BAY 41-2272 intravenously in doses of 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, and 1 mg/kg/h or vehicle (1 ml/kg/h of 1.13% ethanol in saline, volume/volume). Plasma cGMP and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances concentrations were determined using a commercial enzyme immunoassay and a fluorometric method, respectively. The infusion of BAY 41-2272 resulted in a decrease in pulmonary artery pressure by similar to 29%, and in pulmonary vascular resistance by similar to 46% of the respective increases induced by lung embolization (both P<0.05). While the higher doses of BAY 41-2272 produced no additional effects on the pulmonary circulation, they caused significant arterial hypotension and reduction in systemic vascular resistance (both P<0.05). Although BAY 41-2272 increased cGMP concentrations (P<0.05), it did not affect the hypoxemia and the increased oxidative stress caused by lung embolization. These results suggest that stimulation of soluble guanylate cyclase with low (but not high) doses of BAY 41-2272 produces selective pulmonary vasodilation during acute pulmonary embolism. The dose-dependent systemic effects produced by BAY 41-2272, however, may limit its usefulness in larger doses. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Introduction: Inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) improves the hemodynamics during acute pulmonary embolism (APE) and oxidative stress upregulates MMPs. We compared the effects of different NO-cGMP pathway activators on APE-induced increases in MMPs. Materials and Methods: Hemodynamic and biochemical evaluations were performed in non-embolized dogs treated with saline (N = 5), and in microspheres embolized dogs receiving saline (n = 9), or nitrite (6.75 mu mol/kg i.v. over 15 min followed by 0.28 mu mol/kg/min; n = 5), or sildenafil (0.25 mg/kg; n = 5), or BAY 41-2272 (0.03, 0.1, 0.3, and 1 mg/kg/h; n = 5). Plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentrations were determined. Zymograms of plasma samples were performed, and in vitro antioxidant effects or inhibition of MMPs by these drugs were examined. Results: APE increased mean pulmonary artery pressure by similar to 25 mmHg. Nitrite, BAY 41-2272, or sildenafil reversed this increase by similar to 40% (P < 0.05). Similar effects were seen on the pulmonary vascular resistance. While both nitrite and sildenafil produced no systemic effects, the highest dose of BAY 41-2272 produced systemic hypotension (P<0.05). While nitrite and sildenafil blunted the increases in plasma pro-MMP-9 levels and TBARS (all P < 0.05), BAY 41-2272 produced no such effects. Nitrite and sildenafll produced in vitro antioxidant effects and inhibited MMPs only at high concentrations. BAY 41-2272 produced no such effects. Conclusions: Activation of the NO-cGMP pathway with nitrite or sildenafil, but not with BAY 41-2272, attenuates APE-induced oxidative stress and increased MMP-9 levels. These findings are consistent with the idea that NO-cGMP pathway activators with antioxidant effects prevent the release of MMP-9 during APE. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The discovery of periodic mesoporous MCM-41 and related molecular sieves has attracted significant attention from a fundamental as well as applied perspective. They possess well-defined cylindrical/hexagonal mesopores with a simple geometry, tailored pore size, and reproducible surface properties. Hence, there is an ever-growing scientific interest in the challenges posed by their processing and characterization and by the refinement of various sorption models. Further, MCM-41-based materials are currently under intense investigation with respect to their utility as adsorbents, catalysts, supports, ion-exchangers, and molecular hosts. In this article, we provide a critical review of the developments in these areas with particular emphasis on adsorption characteristics, progress in controlling the pore sizes, and a comparison of pore size distributions using traditional and newer models. The model proposed by the authors for adsorption isotherms and criticalities in capillary condensation and hysteresis is found to explain unusual adsorption behavior in these materials while providing a convenient characterization tool.

In this paper, the organophilic property of MCM-41 was studied and compared with hydrophobic silicalite-l using adsorption and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) methods. The surface heterogeneity of MCM-41 was evaluated in terms of activation energy for desorption (E-d) and isosteric heat of adsorption (q(st)). Results show that MCM-41 has a higher affinity to polar organic compounds than to non-polar organics while silicalite-l has a higher affinity to non-polar organic compounds than to polar organics. This organophilic behaviour of MCM-41 is attributed to its surface heterogeneity. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The pore-opening size of MCM-41 is tailored to be in the microporous region using a chemical vapor deposition technique for selective tailoring. Although the pore opening is narrowed, the internal pore body of MCM-41 remains unchanged so the pore volume retains a substantial portion (80%) of its original value. The adsorption equilibrium of nitrogen and benzene in the modified MCM-41 shows a type I isotherm, which significantly improves the adsorption performance of MCM-41 for low-concentration volatile organic compounds. The adsorption kinetics of benzene in the modified MCM-41 is also studied.

Phase-equilibrium data and the liquidus for the system. "MnO"-CaO-(Al2O3-SiO2) at a manganese-rich alloy saturation have been determined in the temperature range from 1423 to 1723 K. The results are presented in the form of a pseudoternary section "MnO"-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) with an Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.41. The following primary phases are present in the range of conditions investigated:, 3Al(2)O(3).2SiO(2); SiO2; MnO.Al2O3-2SiO(2); (Mn,Ca)O.SiO2; 2(Mn,Ca)O.SiO2; MnO.Al2O3; (Mn,Ca)O; alpha-2CaO.SiO2; alpha'-2CaO.SiO2; 2CaO.Al2O3.SiO2; CaO.SiO2, and CaO.Al2O3.2SiO(2). The presence of alumina in this system is shown to have a significant effect on the liquidus compared to the system "MnO"-CaO-SiO2, leading to, the stabilization of the anorthite and gehlenite phases.
