Positions of all cores recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 112 off Peru are shown in the standard calcareous nannoplankton zonation. Stratigraphic and regional occurrences and preservation of calcareous nannoplankton are discussed for all sites, and fossil lists are presented for selected samples. Late Miocene to Holocene nannoplankton assemblages in the upwelling systems off Peru and scattered blooms, especially of Gephyrocapsa species and Helicosphaera carteri, are described. Scyphosphaera assemblages found in late Miocene Zone NN9 {Discoaster hamatus Zone) at Site 684 are compared with similar assemblages from Gabon on the west coast of Africa. Remarkable subsidence is indicated by early and middle Eocene nearshore and shallow-water nannoplankton assemblages for Sites 682, 683, and 688. Besides several local hiatuses, major regional hiatuses were noted at Site 682 (upper Eocene, uppermost middle Eocene, and part of the lower and middle Oligocene missing), Site 683 (uppermost middle Eocene to lower part of the middle Miocene missing), and Site 688 (part of the middle Eocene, uppermost middle Eocene to upper Oligocene, and parts of the lower and middle Miocene missing).

At the Peruvian convergent margin, two distinct pore fluid regimes are recognized from differences in their Cl- concentrations. The slope pore fluids are characterized by low Cl- concentrations, but elevated Br- and I- concentrations due to biogenic production. The shelf pore fluids exhibit elevated Cl- and Br- concentrations due to diffusive mixing with an evaporitic brine. In the slope pore fluids, the Br-, I-, and NH4+ concentrations are elevated following bacterial decomposition of organic matter, but the I- concentrations are in excess of those expected based on mass balance calculations using NH4+ and Br- concentrations. The slope sediment organic matter, which is enriched in iodine from oxidationreduction processes at the oxygenated sediment-water interface, is responsible for this enrichment. The increases in dissolved I- and the I- enrichments relative to NH4+ and Br- correlate well with sedimentation rates because of differential trapping following regeneration. The pore-fluid I-/Br- ratios suggest that membrane ion fiitration is not a major cause of the decreases in Cl- concentrations. Other possible sources for low Cl- water, including meteoric water, clathrate dissociation, and/or mineral dehydration reactions, imply that the diluting component of the slope low-Cl- fluids has flowed at least 1 km through the sediment. The low bottom-water oxygenation in the shelf is responsible for the low (if any) enrichment of iodine in the shelf sediments. Fluctuations in bottom-water oxygen concentrations in the past, however, may be responsible for the observed variations in the sediment I/Br ratios. Comparison of Na+/Cl- and Br-/Cl- molar ratios in the pore fluids shows that the shelf high-Cl- fluid formed from mixing with a brine that formed from seawater concentrated by twelve to nineteen times and probably was modified by halite dissolution. This dense brine, located below the sediment sections drilled, appears to have flowed a distance >500 km through the sediment.

This data report tabulates results of chemical analyses of sediments from four sites (680, 682, 685, and 688) drilled during Leg 112 offshore Peru. These sediments were recovered from the forearc basins underlying the Peru upwelling area. They are equivalent in facies and age to the Pisco and Monterey formations, both of which are of considerable economic and geological interest as hydrocarbon source rocks deposited under conditions of coastal upwelling. Sediments recovered from the shelf (Site 680) and slope (Sites 682, 685, and 688) during Leg 112 are unconsolidated and are thermally immature. A lack of consolidation and thermal catagenesis makes these deposits ideal targets for chemical investigation into effects of early diagenesis in organic-carbon-rich siliceous muds.

During Leg 112 off Peru, volcanic material was recorded from middle Eocene to Holocene time. The petrographical and chemical composition of tephra is consistent with an origin from the Andean volcanic arc. The amount and thickness of ash layers provide valuable evidence for explosive volcanic episodicity. The first indication of volcanism was found in mid-Eocene sediments. Three volcanic pulses date from Miocene time. Two intense episodes took place in upper Pliocene and from Pleistocene to Holocene time. Pliocene-Pleistocene tephra are restricted to the southern upper-slope and shelf sites, indicating a removal of the volcanic arc and the extinction of the northern Peru volcanoes. The Cenozoic tectonic phases of the Andean margin may be correlated with the Leg 112 volcanic records. The explosive supply of evolved magmatic products succeeded the Incaic and Quechua tectonic phases. Acidic glasses are related to both andesitic and shoshonitic series. The calc-alkaline factor (CAF) of these glasses exhibited moderate magmatic variations during middle and late Miocene time. A dramatic change occurred during the Pliocene-Pleistocene, reflected in a strong CAF increase and the appearance of potassium-rich evolved shoshonitic glasses. This took place when the Nazca Ridge subduction began. This change in the magma genesis and/or differentiation conditions is probably related to thickening of the upper continental plate and to a new configuration of the Benioff Zone.

Organic-carbon-rich anoxic sediments from the continental shelf (Site 680) and the lower continental slope (Site 688) off Peru were studied to determine factors controlling the accumulation of reduced sulfur. High concentrations of organic matter in diatomaceous muds, its thermal immaturity, and the presence of abundant hydrogen-containing organic compounds lead to the conclusion that organic matter is not limiting for reduced sulfur formation. Rather, high degrees of iron pyritization at Site 680 limit pyrite accumulation in sediments from this shelf site. The low degree of iron pyritization and nearly complete reduction of dissolved sulfate at Site 688 suggest that a lack of interstitial sulfate is limiting pyrite formation there. Although factors that limit the formation of sedimentary iron sulfide are different at each site, the resulting average reduced-sulfur concentrations are remarkably similar (0.85 wt.% at Site 680 and 0.86 wt.% at Site 688). Carbon to sulfur (C/S) ratios are higher in samples containing in excess of 3 wt.% organic carbon than the average of 2.8 in normal marine sediments and have been primarily influenced by variations in organic matter concentrations.

We have determined (1) the abundance and isotopic composition of pyrite, monosulphide, elemental sulphur, organically bound sulphur, and dissolved sulphide; (2) the partition of ferric and ferrous iron; (3) the organic carbon contents of sediments recovered at two sites drilled on the Peru Margin during Leg 112 of the Ocean Drilling Program. Sediments at both sites are characterised by high levels of organically bound sulphur (OBS). OBS comprises up to 50% of total sedimentary sulphur and up to 1% of bulk sediment. The weight ratio of S to C in organic matter varies from 0.03 to 0.15 (mean = 0.10). Such ratios are like those measured in lithologically similar, but more deeply buried petroleum source rocks of the Monterey and Sisquoc formations in California. The sulphur content of organic matter is not limited by the availability of porewater sulphide. Isotopic data suggest that sulphur is incorporated into organic matter within a metre of the sediment surface, at least partly by reaction with polysulphides. Most inorganic Sulphur occurs as pyrite. Pyrite formation occurred within surface sediments and was limited by the availability of reactive iron. But despite highly reducing sulphidic conditions, only 35-65% of the total iron was converted to sulphide; 10-30% of the total iron still occurs as Fe(III). In surface sediments, the isotopic composition of pyrite is similar to that of both iron monosulphide and dissolved sulphide. Either pyrite, like monosulphide, formed by direct reaction between dissolved sulphide and detrital iron, and/or the sulphur species responsible for converting FeS to FeS2 is isotopically similar to dissolved sulphide. Likely stoichiometries for the reaction between ferric iron and excess sulphide imply a maximum resulting FeS2:FeS ratio of 1:1. Where pyrite dominates the pool of iron sulphides, at least some pyrite must have formed by reaction between monosulphide and elemental sulphur and/or polysulphide. Elemental sulphur (S°) is most abundant in surface sediments and probably formed by oxidation of sulphide diffusing across the sediment-water interface. In surface sediments, S° is isotopically heavier than dissolved sulphide, FeS and FeS2 and is unlikely to have been involved in the conversion of FeS to FeS2. Polysulphides are thus implicated as the link between FeS and FeS2.

Com este trabalho pretendeu contribuir-se para o conhecimento sobre a otite causada por Malassezia pachydermatis através de um estudo de prevalência de malasseziose auricular em cães. Esta dissertação foi desenvolvida no âmbito do estágio curricular do Mestrado Integrado de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias que se realizou entre Setembro de 2009 e Fevereiro de 2010 no Hospital Veterinário SOSVET em Almada. As percentagens de presença de Malassezia, independentemente do tamanho da população fúngica, em animais saudáveis (36,11%) e em animais com otite externa (85,29%) estão em concordância com estudos anteriores. A maior prevalência de malasseziose (em termos de sobrecrescimento de Malassezia) em animais com sinais de otite (79,41%) e animais com orelhas pendulares (31,65%), assim como a aparente susceptibilidade da raça Cocker spaniel também são aspectos referidos em estudos anteriores. O estudo permitiu evidenciar uma relação estatisticamente relevante entre a presença de otite e o sobrecrescimento de Malassezia, porém não ficou provada a relação entre a ocorrência de sobrecrescimento de Malassezia com a idade, sexo, tipo de orelha ou história clínica. Este estudo permitiu verificar que nenhum dos dois ouvidos estava particularmente predisposto ao sobrecrescimento, que 35,42% dos animais com presença de Malassezia auricular tinham tamanhos de população diferentes entre ouvidos e que os cocos eram as principais bactérias associadas a Malassezia nos ouvidos. O estudo também deixou perceber como pode ser complicada e subjectiva a avaliação de citologias auriculares face à ausência de consenso sobre valores de referência.

En los últimos 5 anos hemos tratado 112 casos de toxoplasmosis. La mayor parte presentaba abortos o coriorretinitis; algunos presentaban meningo-encefalitis, miocarditis y otras formas. Ocho por ciento de los pacientes presentaban dos cuadros anatomoclínicos de toxoplasmosis. Se administro en forma alterna pirimetamina, sulfametopirazina o espiramicina durante períodos prolongados, practicando reacción de Sabin y Feldman cada tres meses. La meta es negativizar la prueba serológica, la cual generalmente logramos. Clinicamente se aprecia curación al observar la desaparición de los fenômenos inflamatorios en el fondo del ojo, la desaparición de adenopatías u otros signos clínicos, ó el desarrollo de embarazos normales con productos normales en mujeres abortadoras. Considerando los graves problemas que hemos visto en hijos de madres con toxoplasmosis, preferimos tratar a éstas antes de nuevos embarazos.

Cento e doze aidéticos ou não com neurocriptococose, admitidos no Hospital Emílio Ribas - São Paulo, Brasil, receberam anfotericina B (AMB) - grupo III ou a associação AMB/ 5 fluorcitosina (5FC): grupos I e II. Testes de Goodman aplicados revelaram: 1. leuco e glicorraquia semelhantes nos três grupos eproteinorraquia inferior a 85mg/dlapós 1, 5g/AMB; 1. a coloração pelo método da tinta da China e a cultura para Cryptococcus neoformans, positivas até l,Og/AMB; 3. hipocalemia na monoterapia, hipo e hipercalemia durante a associação; 4. as reações adversas mais evidentes a > 0,7gAMB/250g 5FC; 5. óbitos (precoce e tardio) frequentes no grupo 1 e nos grupos I e III entre 2,5 a 4,0g de AMB; 6. remissão e morte semelhantes nos grupos. A associação terapêutica iniciale amanutençãopelo AMB conduziram à recaída tardia

Untreated acute toxoplasmosis among pregnant women can lead to serious sequelae among newborns, including neurological impairment and blindness. In Brazil, the risk of congenital toxoplasmosis (CTox) has not been fully evaluated. Our aim was to evaluate trends in acute toxoplasmosis prevalence from 1998-2005, the incidence of CTox and the rate of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT). A cross-sectional study was undertaken to dentify patients who fit the criteria for acute toxoplasmosis during pregnancy. Exposed newborns were included in a historical cohort, with a median follow-up time of 11 months, to establish definite diagnosis of CTox. Diagnoses for acute infection in pregnancy and CTox were based on European Research Network on Congenital Toxoplasmosis criteria. In 41,112 pregnant women, the prevalence of acute toxoplasmosis was 4.8/1,000 women. The birth prevalence of CTox was 0.6/1,000 newborns [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.4-0.9]. During the follow-up study, 12 additional cases were detected, increasing the CTox rate to 0.9/1,000 newborns (95% CI: 0.6-1.3). Among the 200 newborns exposed to Toxoplasma gondii,there were 37 babies presenting diagnostic criteria of CTox, leading to an MTCT rate of 18.5% (95% CI: 13.4-24.6%). The additional cases identified during follow-up reinforce the need for serological monitoring during the first year of life, even in the absence of evidence of congenital infection at birth.
