Compensation grouting is increasingly employed as a mitigation technique of settlements induced by tunnelling and its effectiveness both in clayey and sandy soils is reported in a wide number of case histories. However, the results are highly dependent on grout properties, injection characteristics and soil properties. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the parameters that control grout injections in silty soils. The results from one injection test in a large sample of silty soil show that the compensation efficiency, defined as the ratio of the volume of heave obtained at ground surface and the injected grout volume, is much lower than one and tends to decrease with time, while the initial volume of grout lost due to pressure filtration is small. Finally, results from finite elements back analyses of the laboratory test show that a good agreement with the experimental data can be obtained if the development of large strains is taken into account. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.

This paper discusses the development of a computationally efficient numerical method for predicting the acoustics of rattle events upfront in the design cycle. The method combines Finite Elements, Boundary Elements and SEA and enables the loudness of a large number of rattle events to be efficiently predicted across a broad frequency range. A low frequency random vibro-acoustic model is used in conjunction with various closed form analytical expressions in order to quickly predict impact probabilities and locations. An existing method has been extended to estimate the statistics of the contact forces across a broad frequency range. Finally, broadband acoustic radiation is predicted using standard low, mid and high frequency vibro-acoustic methods and used to estimate impact loudness. The approach is discussed and a number of validation examples are presented.

This paper discusses several considerations related to appropriate numerical modelling of the reservoir hydrodynamic pressures on dams. The reservoir is modelled with 8-noded isoparametric displacement based solid finite elements. The study includes both stiff and flexible dams with vertical and sloped upstream faces under ramp, harmonic and random acceleration loads. The numerical results were compared and found to be in good agreement with available closed-form solutions. The same approach may be used in analyses of other waterfront structures such as quay walls. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

From the effective absorption coefficient of bonded interface and the relationship of interface to reflectivity at cavity mode for double bonded vertical cavity laser, it can be seen that bonded interfaces should be positioned at the null of standing wave distribution, and the thickness of interface should be less than 20 nm. Using the finite elements method, the temperature contour map of laser can be calculated. Results showed that the influence of thin interface to thermal characteristics of VCSELS is slight, while thick interface will lead to temperature increase of active region. SEM images demonstrate that hydrophobic bonding is suitable for the fabrication of the device, while hydrophilic bonding interface is unfavorable to optical and thermal properties of devices with interface thickness larger than 40 nm.

Studies on learning problems from geometry perspective have attracted an ever increasing attention in machine learning, leaded by achievements on information geometry. This paper proposes a different geometrical learning from the perspective of high-dimensional descriptive geometry. Geometrical properties of high-dimensional structures underlying a set of samples are learned via successive projections from the higher dimension to the lower dimension until two-dimensional Euclidean plane, under guidance of the established properties and theorems in high-dimensional descriptive geometry. Specifically, we introduce a hyper sausage like geometry shape for learning samples and provides a geometrical learning algorithm for specifying the hyper sausage shapes, which is then applied to biomimetic pattern recognition. Experimental results are presented to show that the proposed approach outperforms three types of support vector machines with either a three degree polynomial kernel or a radial basis function kernel, especially in the cases of high-dimensional samples of a finite size. High-quality InAs epitaxial layers have been grown on (1 0 0) oriented semi-insulating GaAs substrates by MBE. The transport properties of largely lattice mismatched InAs/GaAs heterojunctions have been investigated by Hall effect measurements down to 10 K. In spite of a high dislocation density at the heterointerface, very high electron mobilities are obtained in the InAs thin films. By doping Si into the layer far from the InAs/GaAs interface, we found that the doped samples have higher electron mobility than that of the undoped samples with the same thickness. The mobility demonstrates a pronounced minimum around 300 K for the undoped sample. But for Si-doped samples, no pronounced minimum has been found. Such abnormal behaviours are explained by the parallel conduction from the quasi-bulk carriers and interface carriers. These high-mobility InAs thin films are found to be suitable materials for making Hall elements. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectral data are presented for four young B-type stars lying towards the Galactic Centre. Determination of their atmospheric parameters from their absorption line profiles, and uvby photometric measurement of the continua indicate that they are massive objects lying slightly out of the plane, and were probably born in the disk between 2.5-5 kpc from the Centre. We have carried out a detailed absolute and differential line-by-line abundance analyses of the four stars compared to two stars with very similar atmospheric parameters in the solar neighbourhood. The stars appear to be rich in all the well sampled chemical elements (C, N, Si, Mg, S, Al), except for oxygen. Oxygen abundances derived in the atmospheres of these four stars are very similar to that in the solar neighbourhood. If the photospheric composition of these young stars is reflective of the gaseous ISM in the inner Galaxy, then the values derived for the enhanced metals are in excellent agreement with the extrapolation of the Galactic abundance gradients previously derived by Rolleston et al. (2000) and others. However, the data for oxygen suggests that the inner Galaxy may not be richer than normal in this element, and the physical reasons for such a scenario are unclear.

High-resolution optical and ultraviolet (UV) spectra of two B-type post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars in globular clusters, Barnard29 in M13 and ROA5701 in ?Cen, have been analysed using model atmosphere techniques. The optical spectra have been obtained with FEROS on the ESO 2.2-m telescope and the 2d-Coudé spectrograph on the 2.7-m McDonald telescope, while the UV observations are from the Goddard high-resolution spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Abundances of light elements (C, N, O, Mg, Al and S) plus Fe have been determined from the optical spectra, while the UV data provide additional Fe abundance estimates from FeIII absorption lines in the 1875-1900 Å wavelength region. A general metal underabundance relative to young B-type stars is found for both Barnard29 and ROA5701. These results are consistent with the metallicities of the respective clusters, as well as with previous studies of the objects. The derived abundance patterns suggest that the stars have not undergone a gas-dust separation, contrary to previous suggestions, although they may have evolved from the AGB before the onset of the third dredge-up. However, the Fe abundances derived from the HST spectra are lower than those expected from the metallicities of the respective clusters, by 0.5 dex for Barnard29 and 0.8 dex for ROA5701. A similar systematic underabundance is also found for other B-type stars in environments of known metallicity, such as the Magellanic Clouds. These results indicate that the FeIII UV lines may yield abundance values which are systematically too low by typically 0.6 dex and hence such estimates should be treated with caution.

It has been shown that a femtosecond plasma of cluster targets is an almost isotropic source of fast ions and, hence, can be used to obtain ionographic images with a wide field of view. The spatial resolution of the resulting ionographic images is no worse than 600 nm, which corresponds to a uniquely high value of about 105 of the ratio of the field of view to the resolution. The use of 100–300-keV ion fluxes ensures the sensitivity of the method to the sample thickness of no worse than 100 nm even for samples consisting of light chemical elements (C, H). The proposed method can be used to obtain images of low-contrast biological objects, thin films, membranes, and other nanostructured objects.

This work analyzes the relationship between large food webs describing potential feeding relations between species and smaller sub-webs thereof describing relations actually realized in local communities of various sizes. Special attention is given to the relationships between patterns of phylogenetic correlations encountered in large webs and sub-webs. Based on the current theory of food-web topology as implemented in the matching model, it is shown that food webs are scale invariant in the following sense: given a large web described by the model, a smaller, randomly sampled sub-web thereof is described by the model as well. A stochastic analysis of model steady states reveals that such a change in scale goes along with a re-normalization of model parameters. Explicit formulae for the renormalized parameters are derived. Thus, the topology of food webs at all scales follows the same patterns, and these can be revealed by data and models referring to the local scale alone. As a by-product of the theory, a fast algorithm is derived which yields sample food webs from the exact steady state of the matching model for a high-dimensional trophic niche space in finite time. Deformation localisation is the main reason for material failure in cold forging of titanium alloys and is thus closely related to the production yield of cold forging. In the study of the influence of process parameters on dynamic compression, considering material constitutive behaviour, physical parameters and process parameters, a numerical dynamic compression model for titanium alloys has been constructed. By adjusting the process parameters, the severity of strain localisation and stress state in the localised zone can be controlled thus enhancing the compression performance of titanium alloys.

We have investigated the effects of depletion of the elements C, N and O on the chemical composition of dark clouds, using both isothermal and isochoric cloud models. Our work differs from previous approaches in that we have considered a much larger range of CNO depletions. We have included the chemistry of the ortho-and para-forms of H2 and the exothermic reaction between N+ and ortho-H2, which synthesizes NH3. In the isothermal models, the ortho:para ratio is very small at large depletions, but NH3 formation is still efficient owing to reactions between He+ and CN or HCN. In the isochoric models, the equilibrium temperature of the gas is larger, and a thermal ortho:para ratio, which is large enough to drive NH3 formation, results. In all cases, the fractional abundance of NH3 is close to 10(-8) and this may help to explain the puzzling observation that, in dark clouds, the column density of NH3 is always close to 10(15) cm-2.

A major concern in stiffener run-out regions, where the stiffener is terminated due to a cut-out, intersecting rib, or some other structural feature which interrupts the load path, is the relatively weak skin–stiffener interface in the absence of mechanical fasteners. More damage tolerant stiffener run-outs are clearly required and these are investigated in this paper. Using a parametric finite element analysis, the run-out region was optimised for stable debonding crack growth. The modified run-out, as well as a baseline configuration, were manufactured and tested. Damage initiation and propagation was investigated in detail using state-of-the-art monitoring equipment including Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation. As expected, the baseline configuration failed catastrophically. The modified run-out showed improved crack-growth stability, but subsequent delamination failure in the stiffener promptly led to catastrophic failure.

Experimental static and fatigue tension-tension tests were carried out on 5HS/RTM6 composite intact coupons and coupons incorporating adhesively-bonded (FM300-2) stepped flush joints. The results show that the adhesive joint, which is widely used in repairs, significantly reduces the static strength as well as the fatigue life of the composite. Both, the static and the fatigue failure of the ‘repaired’ coupons occur at the adhesive joint and involve crack initiation and propagation. The latter is modelled using interface finite elements based on the decohezive zone approach. The material degradation in the interface constitutive law is described by a damage variable, which can evolve due to the applied loads as well as the number of fatigue cycles. The fatigue formulation, based on a published model, is adapted to fit the framework of the pseudotransient formulation that is used as a numerical tool to overcome convergence difficulties. The fatigue model requires three material parameters. Numerical tests show that a single set of these parameters can be used to recover, very accurately, the experimental S-N relationship. Sensitivity studies show that the results are not mesh dependent.
