The current I to a cylindrical Langmuir probe with a bias Φp satisfying β≡eΦp/mec2∼O(1) is discussed. The probe is considered at rest in an unmagnetized plasma composed of electrons and ions with temperatureskTe∼kTi≪mec2. For small enough radius, the probe collects the relativistic orbital-motion-limited (OML) current I OML , which is shown to be larger than the non-relativistic result; the OML current is proportional to β1/2 and β3/2 in the limits β≪1 and β≫1, respectively. Unlike the non-relativistic case, the electron density can exceed the unperturbed density value. An asymptotic theory allowed to compute the maximum radius of the probe to collect OML current, the sheath radius for probe radius well below maximum and how the ratio I/I OML drops below unity when the maximum radius is exceeded. A numerical algorithm that solves the Vlasov-Poisson system was implemented and density and potential profiles presented. The results and their implications in a possible mission to Jupiter with electrodynamic bare tethers are discussed density value. Mobile activity recognition focuses on inferring the current activities of a mobile user by leveraging the sensory data that is available on today’s smart phones. The state of the art in mobile activity recognition uses traditional classification learning techniques. Thus, the learning process typically involves: i) collection of labelled sensory data that is transferred and collated in a centralised repository; ii) model building where the classification model is trained and tested using the collected data; iii) a model deployment stage where the learnt model is deployed on-board a mobile device for identifying activities based on new sensory data. In this paper, we demonstrate the Mobile Activity Recognition System (MARS) where for the first time the model is built and continuously updated on-board the mobile device itself using data stream mining. The advantages of the on-board approach are that it allows model personalisation and increased privacy as the data is not sent to any external site. Furthermore, when the user or its activity profile changes MARS enables promptly adaptation. MARS has been implemented on the Android platform to demonstrate that it can achieve accurate mobile activity recognition. Moreover, we can show in practise that MARS quickly adapts to user profile changes while at the same time being scalable and efficient in terms of consumption of the device resources.

This paper proposes a methodology for developing a speech into sign language translation system considering a user-centered strategy. This method-ology consists of four main steps: analysis of technical and user requirements, data collection, technology adaptation to the new domain, and finally, evalua-tion of the system. The two most demanding tasks are the sign generation and the translation rules generation. Many other aspects can be updated automatical-ly from a parallel corpus that includes sentences (in Spanish and LSE: Lengua de Signos Española) related to the application domain. In this paper, we explain how to apply this methodology in order to develop two translation systems in two specific domains: bus transport information and hotel reception.

Relatively short electrodynamic tethers can extract orbital energy to "push" against a planetary magnetic field to achieve propulsion without the expenditure of propellant. The Propulsive Small Expendable Deployer System experiment will use the flight-proven Small Expendable Deployer System to deploy a 5-km bare aluminum tether from a Delta II upper stage to achieve ~0.4-N drag thrust, thus lowering the altitude of the stage. The experiment will use a predominantly bare tether for current collection in lieu of the endmass collector and insulated tether used on previous missions. The flight experiment is a precursor to a more ambitious electrodynamic tether upper-stage demonstration mission that will be capable of orbit-raising,lowering, and inclination changes, all using electrodynamic thrust. The expected performance of the tether propulsion system during the experiment is described.

BETs is a three-year project financed by the Space Program of the European Commission, aimed at developing an efficient deorbit system that could be carried on board any future satellite launched into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The operational system involves a conductive tape-tether left bare to establish anodic contact with the ambient plasma as a giant Langmuir probe. As a part of this project, we are carrying out both numerical and experimental approaches to estimate the collected current by the positive part of the tether. This paper deals with experimental measurements performed in the IONospheric Atmosphere Simulator (JONAS) plasma chamber of the Onera-Space Environment Department. The JONAS facility is a 9- m3 vacuum chamber equipped with a plasma source providing drifting plasma simulating LEO conditions in terms of density and temperature. A thin metallic cylinder, simulating the tether, is set inside the chamber and polarized up to 1000 V. The Earth's magnetic field is neutralized inside the chamber. In a first time, tether collected current versus tether polarization is measured for different plasma source energies and densities. In complement, several types of Langmuir probes are used at the same location to allow the extraction of both ion densities and electron parameters by computer modeling (classical Langmuir probe characteristics are not accurate enough in the present situation). These two measurements permit estimation of the discrepancies between the theoretical collection laws, orbital motion limited law in particular, and the experimental data in LEO-like conditions without magnetic fields. In a second time, the spatial variations and the time evolutions of the plasma properties around the tether are investigated. Spherical and emissive Langmuir probes are also used for a more extensive characterization of the plasma in space and time dependent analysis. Results show the ion depletion because of the wake effect and the accumulation of- ions upstream of the tether. In some regimes (at large positive potential), oscillations are observed on the tether collected current and on Langmuir probe collected current in specific sites.

The SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) program is an ambitious re-search and development initiative to design the future European air traffic man-agement (ATM) system. The study of the behavior of ATM systems using agent-based modeling and simulation tools can help the development of new methods to improve their performance. This paper presents an overview of existing agent-based approaches in air transportation (paying special attention to the challenges that exist for the design of future ATM systems) and, subsequently, describes a new agent-based approach that we proposed in the CASSIOPEIA project, which was developed according to the goals of the SESAR program. In our approach, we use agent models for different ATM stakeholders, and, in contrast to previous work, our solution models new collaborative decision processes for flow traffic management, it uses an intermediate level of abstraction (useful for simulations at larger scales), and was designed to be a practical tool (open and reusable) for the development of different ATM studies. It was successfully applied in three stud-ies related to the design of future ATM systems in Europe.

ABSTRACT -ray astronomy studies the most energetic particles arriving to the Earth from outer space. This -rays are not generated by thermal processes in mere stars, but by means of particle acceleration mechanisms in astronomical objects such as active galactic nuclei, pulsars, supernovas or as a result of dark matter annihilation processes. The γ rays coming from these objects and their characteristics provide with valuable information to the scientist which try to understand the underlying physical fundamentals of these objects, as well as to develop theoretical models able to describe them accurately. The problem when observing rays is that they are absorbed in the highest layers of the atmosphere, so they don't reach the Earth surface (otherwise the planet would be uninhabitable). Therefore, there are only two possible ways to observe γ rays: by using detectors on-board of satellites, or by observing their secondary effects in the atmosphere. When a γ ray reaches the atmosphere, it interacts with the particles in the air generating a highly energetic electron-positron pair. These secondary particles generate in turn more particles, with less energy each time. While these particles are still energetic enough to travel faster than the speed of light in the air, they produce a bluish radiation known as Cherenkov light during a few nanoseconds. From the Earth surface, some special telescopes known as Cherenkov telescopes or IACTs (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes), are able to detect the Cherenkov light and even to take images of the Cherenkov showers. From these images it is possible to know the main parameters of the original -ray, and with some -rays it is possible to deduce important characteristics of the emitting object, hundreds of light-years away. However, detecting Cherenkov showers generated by γ rays is not a simple task. The showers generated by low energy -rays contain few photons and last few nanoseconds, while the ones corresponding to high energy -rays, having more photons and lasting more time, are much more unlikely. This results in two clearly differentiated development lines for IACTs: In order to detect low energy showers, big reflectors are required to collect as much photons as possible from the few ones that these showers have. On the contrary, small telescopes are able to detect high energy showers, but a large area in the ground should be covered to increase the number of detected events. With the aim to improve the sensitivity of current Cherenkov showers in the high (> 10 TeV), medium (100 GeV - 10 TeV) and low (10 GeV - 100 GeV) energy ranges, the CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) project was created. This project, with more than 27 participating countries, intends to build an observatory in each hemisphere, each one equipped with 4 large size telescopes (LSTs), around 30 middle size telescopes (MSTs) and up to 70 small size telescopes (SSTs). With such an array, two targets would be achieved. First, the drastic increment in the collection area with respect to current IACTs will lead to detect more -rays in all the energy ranges. Secondly, when a Cherenkov shower is observed by several telescopes at the same time, it is possible to analyze it much more accurately thanks to the stereoscopic techniques. The present thesis gathers several technical developments for the trigger system of the medium and large size telescopes of CTA. As the Cherenkov showers are so short, the digitization and readout systems corresponding to each pixel must work at very high frequencies (_ 1 GHz). This makes unfeasible to read data continuously, because the amount of data would be unmanageable. Instead, the analog signals are sampled, storing the analog samples in a temporal ring buffer able to store up to a few _s. While the signals remain in the buffer, the trigger system performs a fast analysis of the signals and decides if the image in the buffer corresponds to a Cherenkov shower and deserves to be stored, or on the contrary it can be ignored allowing the buffer to be overwritten. The decision of saving the image or not, is based on the fact that Cherenkov showers produce photon detections in close pixels during near times, in contrast to the random arrival of the NSB phtotons. Checking if more than a certain number of pixels in a trigger region have detected more than a certain number of photons during a certain time window is enough to detect large showers. However, taking also into account how many photons have been detected in each pixel (sumtrigger technique) is more convenient to optimize the sensitivity to low energy showers. The developed trigger system presented in this thesis intends to optimize the sensitivity to low energy showers, so it performs the analog addition of the signals received in each pixel in the trigger region and compares the sum with a threshold which can be directly expressed as a number of detected photons (photoelectrons). The trigger system allows to select trigger regions of 14, 21, or 28 pixels (2, 3 or 4 clusters with 7 pixels each), and with extensive overlapping. In this way, every light increment inside a compact region of 14, 21 or 28 pixels is detected, and a trigger pulse is generated. In the most basic version of the trigger system, this pulse is just distributed throughout the camera in such a way that all the clusters are read at the same time, independently from their position in the camera, by means of a complex distribution system. Thus, the readout saves a complete camera image whenever the number of photoelectrons set as threshold is exceeded in a trigger region. However, this way of operating has two important drawbacks. First, the shower usually covers only a little part of the camera, so many pixels without relevant information are stored. When there are many telescopes as will be the case of CTA, the amount of useless stored information can be very high. On the other hand, with every trigger only some nanoseconds of information around the trigger time are stored. In the case of large showers, the duration of the shower can be quite larger, loosing information due to the temporal cut. With the aim to solve both limitations, a trigger and readout scheme based on two thresholds has been proposed. The high threshold decides if there is a relevant event in the camera, and in the positive case, only the trigger regions exceeding the low threshold are read, during a longer time. In this way, the information from empty pixels is not stored and the fixed images of the showers become to little \`videos" containing the temporal development of the shower. This new scheme is named COLIBRI (Concept for an Optimized Local Image Building and Readout Infrastructure), and it has been described in depth in chapter 5. An important problem affecting sumtrigger schemes like the one presented in this thesis is that in order to add the signals from each pixel properly, they must arrive at the same time. The photomultipliers used in each pixel introduce different delays which must be compensated to perform the additions properly. The effect of these delays has been analyzed, and a delay compensation system has been developed. The next trigger level consists of looking for simultaneous (or very near in time) triggers in neighbour telescopes. These function, together with others relating to interfacing different systems, have been developed in a system named Trigger Interface Board (TIB). This system is comprised of one module which will be placed inside the LSTs and MSTs cameras, and which will be connected to the neighbour telescopes through optical fibers. When a telescope receives a local trigger, it is resent to all the connected neighbours and vice-versa, so every telescope knows if its neighbours have been triggered. Once compensated the delay differences due to propagation in the optical fibers and in the air depending on the pointing direction, the TIB looks for coincidences, and in the case that the trigger condition is accomplished, the camera is read a fixed time after the local trigger arrived. Despite all the trigger system is the result of the cooperation of several groups, specially IFAE, Ciemat, ICC-UB and UCM in Spain, with some help from french and japanese groups, the Level 1 and the Trigger Interface Board constitute the core of this thesis, as they have been the two systems designed by the author of the thesis. For this reason, a large amount of technical information about these systems has been included. There are important future development lines regarding both the camera trigger (implementation in ASICS) and the stereo trigger (topological trigger), which will produce interesting improvements for the current designs during the following years, being useful for all the scientific community participating in CTA.

PALABRAS CLAVES moda, sistema, virtual, información, arquitectura Considering that there is nothing left untouched by fashion2, and going beyond the already exhausted discussion about formal intersections, this research introduces the catwalk as the real arena of mediation between fashion and architecture. By assuming this condition, the catwalk embodies new modes of production that appropriates its space and turns it into a machine for generating multiple if not infinite meanings. Fashion, as a creative project, has utilized the catwalk as a frame for rearranging its visual narrative and renewing itself as social phenomena. This research disputes, however, that the current typologies of catwalks do not facilitate the understanding of the collection – as its primary goal - but, instead, present an environment composed of multi-layered visual formats, becoming a complex construct that collides space-time-action in the creation of other territories. Departing from the analysis of the catwalk as a system and how its many variables can produce diverse combinations, this research presents the hypothesis that a new system is being formed entirely built out of information. Such scenario indicates fashion´s final immersion into the fabrics of virtuality. While the discussion about the relevance of fashion shows has become more evident today, this research serves as an introductory speculation on how architectural thinking can introduce methodologies of analysis within the framework of the fashion shows, by proposing a reading of the catwalk as a system through specific procedures that are inherent to architectural projects. Such approach intertwines both practices into a common territory where space, design, behaviour, movement, and bodies are organized for the creation of visual possibilities, and where interactions are triggered in the making of novelty and messages. Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi NCPPB 3335 causes olive knot disease and is a model pathogen for exploring bacterial infection of woody hosts. The type III secretion system (T3SS) effector repertoire of this strain includes 31 effector candidates plus two novel candidates identified in this study which have not been reported to translocate into plant cells. In this work, we demonstrate the delivery of seven NCPPB 3335 effectors into Nicotiana tabacum leaves, including three proteins from two novel families of the P. syringae complex effector super-repertoire (HopBK and HopBL), one of which comprises two proteins (HopBL1 and HopBL2) that harbor a SUMO protease domain. When delivered by P. fluorescens heterologously expressing a P. syringae T3SS, all seven effectors were found to suppress the production of defense-associated reactive oxygen species. Moreover, six of these effectors, including the truncated versions of HopAA1 and HopAZ1 encoded by NCPPB 3335, suppressed callose deposition. The expression of HopAZ1 and HopBL1 by functionally effectorless P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000D28E inhibited the hypersensitive response in tobacco and, additionally, expression of HopBL2 by this strain significantly increased its competitiveness in N. benthamiana. DNA sequences encoding HopBL1 and HopBL2 were uniquely detected in a collection of 31 P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi strains and other P. syringae strains isolated from woody hosts, suggesting a relevant role of these two effectors in bacterial interactions with olive and other woody plants.

ABSTRACT An electrodynamic tether operates on electromagnetic principles and exchanges momentum through the planetary magnetosphere, by continuously interacting with the ionosphere. It is a reliable passive subsystem to deorbit spent rocket stages and satellites at its end of mission, mitigating the growth of orbital debris. A tether left bare of insulation collects electrons by its own uninsulated and positively biased segment with kilometer range, while electrons are emitted by a low-impedance active device at the cathodic end, such as a hollow cathode, to emit the full electron current. In the absence of an active cathodic device, the current flowing along an orbiting bare tether vanishes at both ends and the tether is said to be electrically floating. For negligible thermionic emission and orbital-motion-limited (OML) collection throughout the entire tether (electron/ion collection at anodic/cathodic segment, respectively), the anodic-to-cathodic length ratio is very small due to ions being much heavier, which results in low average current and Lorentz drag. The electride C12A7 : e−, which might present a possible work function as low as W = 0.6 eV and moderately high temperature stability, has been proposed as coating for floating bare tethers. Thermionic emission along a thus coated cathodic segment, under heating in space operation, can be more efficient than ion collection and, in the simplest drag mode, may eliminate the need for an active cathodic device and its corresponding gas-feed requirements and power subsystem, which would result in a truly “propellant-less” tether system. With this low-W coating, each elemental segment on the cathodic segment of a kilometers-long floating bare-tether would emit current as if it were part of a hot cylindrical probe uniformly polarized at the local tether bias, under 2D probe conditions that are also applied to the anodic-segment analysis. In the presence of emission, emitted electrons result in negative space charge, which decreases the electric field that accelerates them outwards, or even reverses it, decelerating electrons near the emitting probe. A double sheath would be established with electrons being emitted from the probe and ions coming from the ambient plasma. The thermionic current density, varying along the cathodic segment, might follow two distinct laws under different con ditions: i) space-charge-limited (SCL) emission or ii) full Richardson-Dushman (RDS) emission. A preliminary study on the SCL current in front of an emissive probe is presented using the orbital-motion-limited (OML) ion-collection sheath and Langmuir’s SCL electron current between cylindrical electrodes. A detailed calculation of current and bias profiles along the entire tether length is carried out with ohmic effects considered and the transition from SCL to full RDS emission is included. Analysis shows that in the simplest drag mode, under typical orbital and tether conditions, thermionic emission provides efficient cathodic contact and leads to a short cathodic section. In the previous analysis, both the transition between SCL and RDS emission and the current law for SCL condition have used a very simple model. To continue, considering an isotropic, unmagnetized, colissionless plasma and a stationary sheath, the probe-plasma contact is studied in detail for a negatively biased probe with thermionic emission. The possible trapped particles are ignored and this study includes both semianalytical solutions using asymptotic analysis and complete numerical solutions. Under conditions of i) high bias, ii) R = Rmax for ion OML collection validity, and iii) monotonic potential, a self-consistent asymptotic analysis is carried out for the complex plasma structure involving all three charge species (plasma electrons and ions, and emitted electrons) and four distinct spatial regions using orbital motion theories and kinetic modeling of the species. Although emitted electrons present negligible space charge far away from the probe, their effect cannot be neglected in the global analysis for the sheath structure and two thin layers in between the sheath and the quasineutral region. The parametric conditions for the current to be space-chargelimited are obtained. It is found that thermionic emission increases the range of probe radius for OML validity and is greatly more effective than ion collection for cathodic contact of tethers. In the numerical code, the orbital motions of all three species are modeled for both monotonic and non-monotonic potential, and for any probe radius R (within or beyond OML regime for ion collection). Taking advantage of two constants of motion (energy and angular momentum), the Poisson-Vlasov equation is described by an integro differential equation, which is discretized using finite difference method. The non-linear algebraic equations are solved using a parallel implementation of the Newton-Raphson method. The results, which show good agreement with the analytical results, provide the results for thermionic current, the sheath structure, and the electrostatic potential.

The proper localization of resident membrane proteins to the trans-Golgi network (TGN) involves mechanisms for both TGN retention and retrieval from post-TGN compartments. In this study we report identification of a new gene, GRD20, involved in protein sorting in the TGN/endosomal system of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A strain carrying a transposon insertion allele of GRD20 exhibited rapid vacuolar degradation of the resident TGN endoprotease Kex2p and aberrantly secreted ∼50% of the soluble vacuolar hydrolase carboxypeptidase Y. The Kex2p mislocalization and carboxypeptidase Y missorting phenotypes were exhibited rapidly after loss of Grd20p function in grd20 temperature-sensitive mutant strains, indicating that Grd20p plays a direct role in these processes. Surprisingly, little if any vacuolar degradation was observed for the TGN membrane proteins A-ALP and Vps10p, underscoring a difference in trafficking patterns for these proteins compared with that of Kex2p. A grd20 null mutant strain exhibited extremely slow growth and a defect in polarization of the actin cytoskeleton, and these two phenotypes were invariably linked in a collection of randomly mutagenized grd20 alleles. GRD20 encodes a hydrophilic protein that partially associates with the TGN. The discovery of GRD20 suggests a link between the cytoskeleton and function of the yeast TGN.

Background: The harmonization of European health systems brings with it a need for tools to allow the standardized collection of information about medical care. A common coding system and standards for the description of services are needed to allow local data to be incorporated into evidence-informed policy, and to permit equity and mobility to be assessed. The aim of this project has been to design such a classification and a related tool for the coding of services for Long Term Care (DESDE-LTC), based on the European Service Mapping Schedule (ESMS). Methods: The development of DESDE-LTC followed an iterative process using nominal groups in 6 European countries. 54 researchers and stakeholders in health and social services contributed to this process. In order to classify services, we use the minimal organization unit or “Basic Stable Input of Care” (BSIC), coded by its principal function or “Main Type of Care” (MTC). The evaluation of the tool included an analysis of feasibility, consistency, ontology, inter-rater reliability, Boolean Factor Analysis, and a preliminary impact analysis (screening, scoping and appraisal). Results: DESDE-LTC includes an alpha-numerical coding system, a glossary and an assessment instrument for mapping and counting LTC. It shows high feasibility, consistency, inter-rater reliability and face, content and construct validity. DESDE-LTC is ontologically consistent. It is regarded by experts as useful and relevant for evidence-informed decision making. Conclusion: DESDE-LTC contributes to establishing a common terminology, taxonomy and coding of LTC services in a European context, and a standard procedure for data collection and international comparison.

This methodological note describes the development and application of a mixed-methods protocol to assess the responsiveness of Spanish health systems to violence against women in Spain, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. Five areas for exploration were identified based on the WHO recommendations: policy environment, protocols, training, accountability/monitoring, and prevention/promotion. Two data collection instruments were developed to assess the situation of 17 Spanish regional health systems (RHS) with respect to these areas: 1) a set of indicators to guide a systematic review of secondary sources, and 2) an interview guide to be used with 26 key informants at the regional and national levels. We found differences between RHSs in the five areas assessed. The progress of RHSs on the WHO recommendations was notable at the level of policies, moderate in terms of health service delivery, and very limited in terms of preventive actions. Using a mixed-methods approach was useful for triangulation and complementarity during instrument design, data collection and interpretation.
