Work satisfaction and affective commitment of classical musicians: The European Union Youth Orchestra

This work project investigates career paths in the music field, by testing the application of general career and social theories for musicians. Using a sample from the European Union Youth Orchestra’ Alumni, the Boundaryless Career Theory, Intelligent Career Framework and Social Identity Theory were analysed through the impact on individual outcomes - musicians’ Overall work satisfaction and Affective commitment to the orchestra. Results suggest support for the three theories, and show their applicability for classical musicians’ careers.

O Figural no Cinema Contemporâneo: Articulações e Disjunções do Visível e do Dizível

O que significa hoje um pensamento do figural? Qual a sua importância no quadro hegemónico do Arquivo Audiovisual e Multimédia Contemporâneo? Qual a relação que o cinema, enquanto assimilável ao pensamento do figural, tem com o Arquivo, tendo em conta a recente apropriação, interpretação, reconfiguração e interrogação das estruturas arquivísticas e materiais de arquivo, por parte de cineastas que usam o cinema, ele próprio, uma forma de arquivagem e material de arquivo, como ferramenta privilegiada de interpelação do Arquivo? Qual a potencial relevância do cinema, encarado nesta perspectiva, face à necessidade política de conceber um exterior do Arquivo? Estas são algumas das perguntas que estão na origem desta tese e a que ela procura responder, através da proposta de (re)corte de um arquivo de filmes e enunciados teóricos e da sua interpelação mútua. Com efeito, a imagem ou ideia de figural supõe uma reconfiguração das relações entre visível e dizível que não só nos serve de topos inspirador da metodologia da tese, num esforço de procurar inscrever a espacialização exigida pelo pensamento do figural na sua própria estrutura, como, sobretudo, nos fornece o quadro teórico de partida para pensar hoje, na senda de autores como Jean- François Lyotard, Michel Foucault e Gilles Deleuze, a relevância simultaneamente epistemológica e política da assimilação de certos gestos cinematográficos contemporâneos a uma imagem do pensamento com estes contornos. Assim, o cinema, sobretudo na sua forma ensaística, é identificado com a possibilidade de pôr em prática, um pensamento do interstício figural, que contraria a identidade dominante do ver e do falar, que rege o paradigma contemporâneo da comunicação, assente na respectiva conversão mútua - as imagens reduzem-se à sua significação ou conteúdo e as palavras convertem-se em imagens legíveis. Através das possibilidades oferecidas pela montagem cinematográfica, trata-se, então, de reenviar as imagens a uma leitura que só elas podem dar, e as palavras a um novo tipo de escuta e entendimento, o que se traduz, em termos da relação do cinema ao Arquivo contemporâneo, na sugestão de que o cinema é uma ferramenta de requalificação do saber que aquele supõe. A nossa hipótese é, pois, a de que o cinema em geral, e certos filmes em particular, ao permitirem a perscrutação arqueológica do Arquivo, introduzem delay na nossa relação aos “documentos”, sendo que é aí, nesse intervalo entre o registo e a sua retoma, que se joga a possibilidade de resistência face ao poder difuso do Arquivo, tal como se manifesta na internet, na televisão, nas redes que hoje geram a regulação, tratamento e transmissão da informação; porque possui uma dimensão audiovisual que lhe permite articular e desarticular arquivos e corpos, e dado que as relações entre dizível e visível não estão estabilizadas, o cinema torna possível a reescrita das figuras, ou seja, um pensamento que não dispõe de uma forma já feita de verdade para o encontro das frases e das experiências, mas que extrai relações essenciais e verdadeiras dos acontecimentos do nosso presente e da nossa história, precisamente a partir da exploração do intervalo instável entre discurso e figura, e da experimentação ao nível da recolagem entre enunciados e visibilidades.

Ethical leadership and unethical pro-organizational behavior: A moderated mediation model of affective commitment and authenticity at work

Recently, unethical conduct in the workplace has been a focus of literature and media. Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) refers to unethical conduct that employees engage in to benefit the organization. Given the complexity of UPB, there is an increasing need to understand how and under what conditions this attitude originates within organizations. Based on a sample of 167 employees and seven organizations, results support the moderated mediation model. An ethical leader increases employees’ organizational affective commitment which increases the likelihood to engage in UPB. However, the indirect relationship diminishes when employees feel authentic at work.

Invenção latino-americana através da expressão audiovisual a partir da Oficina Popular de Audiovisual Latino-americano

Este projeto de tese traça uma percepção etnográfica sobre a Oficina Popular de Audiovisual Latino-americano, projeto de aproximação audiovisual a jovens imigrantes latino-americanos residentes na cidade de São Paulo, através do seu acompanhamento e da filmagem partilhada das suas sessões, ocorridas durante os meses de junho, julho, agosto e setembro de 2014, realizadas no espaço do Cineclube latino-americano, sediado no Memorial da América Latina. Parte-se das premissas de que a latinoamericanidade é um imaginário identitário integracionista continuamente inventado e reinventado por vários agentes, ressignificado ininterruptamente por outros imaginários transregionais e locais, e de que entre as muitas vias da sua contínua reinvenção o audiovisual se dá como expressão estética mediadora de impressões locais e transregionais e como potencializador da reflexão coletiva sobre a existência social de cada um e a partilhada. Descreve-se em forma de relatório e de ensaio audiovisual etnográfico, a intersecção de imaginários identitários migrantes e latino-americanos mediados pelo audiovisual, a envolvência dos jovens com os temários da deslocação e da latinoamericanidade através da Oficina, da recepção de filmes latino-americanos contemporâneos e da criação coletiva de dois curtas-metragens.

Eco-epidemiologic study of emerging fungi related to the work of babaçu coconut breakers in the State of Maranhão, Brazil

Introduction: There are more than 300,000 extractors using the babaçu coconut as a source of income in the States of Maranhão, Pará, Tocantins and Piauí, and this activity is associated with fungal infections. The objective of this study was to examine the occurrence of emergent fungi in the conjunctiva, nails and surface and subcutaneous injuries of female coconut breakers in Esperantinópolis, Maranhão. Additionally, soil samples and palm structures were collected. Methods: The obtained samples were cultured in Petri dishes containing potato-dextrose-agar and chloramphenicol. The etiological agent was confirmed by a direct mycological exam and growth in culture. Results: In total, 150 domiciles were visited, and samples were collected from 80 patients. From the ground, the most frequently isolated fungus was Aspergillus niger (53. 8%). the most frequently detected fungus in babaçu coconut was Aspergillus niger (66.7%). Conjunctival fungal growth occurred in 76.3% of the women. The ocular fungal microbiota consisted of filamentous fungi (80.6%), and yeasts were present in 19.4% of cases. Onychomycosis was diagnosed in 44% (11/25) of the women. Conclusions: The identification of the genera Neosartorya, Rhizopus and Curvularia in onychomycoses shows that emergent filamentous fungi can be isolated. Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp. and Scedosporium sp. were the predominant genera found in the babaçu coconut. From ocular conjunctiva, Candida spp. were the most prevalent species isolated, and Fusarium sp. was present only in one woman. The nearly permanent exposure of coconut breakers to the external environment and to the soil is most likely the reason for the existence of a mycotic flora and fungal infections, varying according to the individual's practices and occupation.

Exploring Literary Landscapes: From Texts to Spatiotemporal Analysis through Collaborative Work and GIS

This article argues that the study of literary representations of landscapes can be aided and enriched by the application of digital geographic technologies. As an example, the article focuses on the methods and preliminary findings of LITESCAPE.PT—Atlas of Literary Landscapes of Mainland Portugal, an on-going project that aims to study literary representations of mainland Portugal and to explore their connections with social and environmental realities both in the past and in the present. LITESCAPE.PT integrates traditional reading practices and ‘distant reading’ approaches, along with collaborative work, relational databases, and geographic information systems (GIS) in order to classify and analyse excerpts from 350 works of Portuguese literature according to a set of ecological, socioeconomic, temporal and cultural themes. As we argue herein this combination of qualitative and quantitative methods—itself a response to the difficulty of obtaining external funding—can lead to (a) increased productivity, (b) the pursuit of new research goals, and (c) the creation of new knowledge about natural and cultural history. As proof of concept, the article presents two initial outcomes of the LITESCAPE.PT project: a case study documenting the evolving literary geography of Lisbon and a case study exploring the representation of wolves in Portuguese literature.

Apoios nacionais e europeus. Ao cinema e audiovisual português (2007 a 2013)

Procuro mostrar nesta dissertação a evolução do cinema e audiovisual em Portugal, no contexto da União Europeia onde estamos inseridos, e no período decorrido entre 2007 e 2013. Os apoios financeiros atribuídos pelos programas nacionais e internacionais a estas áreas da cultura. Procuro mostrar também a evolução e os novos caminhos do cinema e audiovisual quer na União Europeia, quer em Portugal.

Work ethic and the legacies of political regimes

This article studies the cross-country differences in work ethic and claims that different political regimes transmitted different work ethics that still persist today. Using the World Values Survey and starting our political regime analysis in 1900, we find that Democratic regimes promote more effectively work relevance and competitiveness than Autocratic and Anocratic regimes, and that the political regime history of the country is more important than the present level of democracy. Moreover, we prove that this differences were transmitted through generations by parents, who optimally choose what work ethic to transmit taking into account their own values.

NSP work project investment styles

This paper analyzes the Nova Student Portfolio (NSP) with the objective to understand performances of the fund. Each investment style has been analyzed (growth, value and momentum) in order to highlight what style allocation contributed positively and which had a negative impact. The results show that the team mainly invested in value stocks, which contributed positively but that its growth investments had a negative impact on the stock picking performance. The stock selection shows a major influence of the value investment style. A statistical approach shows that the market factor was the one explaining the most the NSP returns.

‘Wooden Man’? : Masculinities in the Work of J. M. Coetzee (Boyhood, Youth and Summertime)

In seeking to advance the possibility of justice, gender and postcolonial studies have argued for the importance of the study of masculinities, through the acknowledgment that a richer understanding of such gendered formations may provide the basis for recognition of the Other and that, left uncriticised, such formations may be continuously delineated by the reproduction of systems of domination. The current study finds as its object the representations of masculinities in J. M. Coetzee’s Boyhood (1997), Youth (2002) and Summertime (2009). As works of transition in terms of Coetzee’s oeuvre - post-apartheid and post-Disgrace - the trilogy provides an account of the development of a man through several stages of life. While portraying the tensions of different geographical and cultural locations, such as apartheid South Africa and the London of the Sixties, the trilogy articulates the various norms that impact in the formation of gender, particularly of masculinities, through a complex system of power relations. The adherence to such norms is never linear, as the trilogy provides imaginative accounts of the contradictions that assist in the formulation of gender, depicting both the allure and the terror that constitute hegemonic masculinity. Located in the intersection of gender and postcolonial studies, the present study is based on the works by Raewyn Connell on masculinities. Animated by such a critical framework, the main research question of the present study is whether the trilogy advances a notion of masculinity that differs from the traditional rigid model, that is, whether there is resistance to hegemonic masculinity and what the spaces inhabited by the subaltern are. It is suggested that the trilogy presents the reader with instances of resistance to normative formulations of masculinity, by contrasting domination with the possibility of justice, and advancing an understanding of the often fatal consequences of gender norms to one’s sense of being in the world.

The impact of work clothing design on workers’ comfort

Physical and physiological comfort, at work and during leisure time, is important to human health and motivation. A growing number of jobs require workers to sit. Most clothes, except those intended for wheelchair users, were designed for walking or the standing position. Clothing designs should be user-oriented and meet users’ needs. Garment design should conform to body position and posture, not just shape and size. In this paper we present the ergometric impact of a new type of trousers designed to adapt to changes in position. Concentrations of compression forces, temperature and pressure were documented in an exploratory pilot study and contrasted to traditional designs. The new trousers showed significant decreases in compression force concentration, especially in and around the knees and waist. Most participants identified comfort as an important factor when purchasing a pair of trousers and that, for working purposes, they would prefer these special trousers rather than traditional designs.
