The present work is aimed at developing a bioactive, corrosion resistant and anti bacterial nanostructured silver substituted hydroxyapatite/titania (AgHA/TiO(2)) composite coating in a single step on commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti) by plasma electrolytic processing (PEP) technique. For this purpose 2.5 wt% silver substituted hydroxyapatite (AgHA) nanoparticles were prepared by microwave processing technique and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The as-synthesized AgHA particles with particle length ranging from 60 to 70 nm and width ranging from 15 to 20 nm were used for the subsequent development of coating on Cp Ti. The PEP treated Cp Ti showed both titania and AgHA in its coating and exhibited an improved corrosion resistance in 7.4 pH simulated body fluid (SBF) and 4.5 pH osteoclast bioresorbable conditions compared to untreated Cp Ti. The in vitro bioactivity test conducted under Kokubo SBF conditions indicated an enhanced apatite forming ability of PEP treated Cp Ti surface compared to that of the untreated Cp Ti. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method or antibiotic sensitivity test conducted with the test organisms of Escherichia coli (E. coli) for 24 h showed a significant zone of inhibition for PEP treated Cp Ti compared to untreated Cp Ti. Addition of boron to cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy leads to significant refinement in grain size, which in turn improves processibilty as well as the mechanical properties of the as-cast alloy. Room temperature tensile and fatigue properties of Wrought Ti-6Al-4V-B alloys with B up to 0.09 wt.% are investigated. Thermo-mechanical processing at 950 degrees C caused kinking of alpha lamellae and alignment of TiB particles in the flow direction with a negligible change in prior beta grain and colony sizes, indicating the absence of dynamic recrystallisation during forging. Characterisation with the aid of X-ray and electron back scattered diffraction reveal a strong basal texture in B free alloy which gets randomised with the 0.09B addition in the forged condition. Marginal enhancement in tensile and fatigue properties upon forging is noted. B free wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits better tensile strength as compared to B containing alloy, due to the operation of < c+a > slip on pyramidal planes with high value of CRSS as compared to < a > slip on basal and prismatic planes. Decrease in fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V-0.04B in as-cast and the wrought state is observed due to increase in the volume fraction of grain boundary a phase with B addition, which acts as a crack nucleation site. No significant effect of TiB particles on tensile and fatigue properties is observed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, enhanced fluorescence from a silver film coated nanosphere templated grating is presented. Initially, numerical simulation was performed to determine the plasmon resonance wavelength by varying the thickness of the silver film on top of a monolayer of 400 nm nanospheres. The simulation results are verified experimentally and tested for enhancing fluorescence from fluorescein isothiocyanate whose excitation wavelength closely matches with the plasmon resonance wavelength of the substrate with 100 nm silver film over nanosphere. The 12 times enhancement in the intensity is attributed to the local field enhancement in addition to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons along the surface.

In this study we present a colorimetric detection method for Cr (VI) in aqueous solution based on as synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) without surface functionalization. The method principle involves reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by excess reductant present in as synthesized Ag NP dispersion, and subsequent aggregation of Ag NPs by Cr (III) leading to red-shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak. The UV-vis absorption spectra. Zeta potentials, dynamic light scattering measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the aggregation of the Ag NPs. Under the optimized conditions, a good linear relationship (correlation coefficient r=0.981) was obtained between the ratio of the absorbance at 550 nm to that at 390 nm (A(550/390)) and the concentration of Cr (VI) over the range of 10(-3)-10(-9) M 50 mg/L to 50 ng/L]. The reported probe has a limit of detection down to 1 nM, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the lowest ever reported for the colorimetric detection of Cr (VI). Furthermore, a remarkable feature of this method is that it involves a simple technique exhibiting high selectivity to Cr (VI) over other tested heavy metal ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier BM. The paper reports the effect of the addition of small amount of Al on the microstructure and properties of HITPERM class rapidly solidified Fe44Co44Zr7B4Cu1 glassy alloy. Using three dimensional atom probe measurements we present evidence for the formation of Cu clusters on annealing in the metallic glass matrix of the Al containing alloy Fe43Co43Al2Zr7B4Cu1. Such clusters are otherwise absent in the parent alloy under similar conditions. The Cu clusters provides heterogeneous nucleation sites for the formation of bcc alpha'-FeCo phase leading to an increase in number density of this nanocrystalline phase and thereby enhancing the magnetic properties. We describe the fabrication of silver nanotriangle array using angle resolved nanosphere lithography and utilizing the same for enhancing fluorescence. The well established nanosphere lithography is modified by changing the angle of deposition between the nanosphere mask and the beam of silver being deposited resulting in nanotriangles of varying surface area and density. The 470 nm plasmon resonance wavelength of the substrate was determined using minimum reflectivity method which closely matches with excitation wavelength of the fluorophore. Ten times enhancement in fluorescence emission intensity is obtained from fluorescein isothiocyanate coated on top of silver nanotriangle array separated by a spacer layer of poly vinyl alcohol as compared to glass. The enhanced fluorescence emission is attributed to the increase in local field enhancement.

Compositional dependent investigations of the bulk GeTe chalcogenides alloys added with different selenium concentrations are carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The measurements reveal that GeTe crystals are predominant in alloys up to 0.20 at.% of Se content indicating interstitial occupancy of Se in the Ge vacancies. Raman modes in the GeTe alloys changes to GeSe modes with the addition of Se. Amorphousness in the alloy increases with increase of Se and 0.50 at.% Se alloy forms a homogeneous amorphous phase with a mixture of Ge-Se and Te-Se bonds. Structural changes are explained with the help of bond theory of solids. Crystallization temperature is found to be increasing with increase of Se, which will enable the amorphous stability. For the optimum 0.50 at.% Se alloy, the melting temperature has reduced which will reduce the RESET current requirement for the phase change memory applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Photo-thermal Deflection (PTD) technique is used to investigate the thermal diffusivity (alpha) of Ge17Te83 - xTlx (0 <= x <= 13) glasses as a function of composition. The thermal diffusivity of these glasses is found to lie in the range 0.020 to 0.048 cm(2)/s, which is consistent with the memory type of electrical switching exhibited by these samples. Further, it is found that alpha shows an initial increase with Tl addition, followed by a decrease. The observed composition dependence of thermal diffusivity has been understood on the basis that the thallium atoms are incorporated as a covalent species for lower values of x, increasing the network rigidity; however, they enter as ionic species for higher x values, fragmenting the network. The initial increase in a is due to the increasing network rigidity and the subsequent decrease is because of the fragmentation of the network. Also, there is a strong correlation between the composition dependence of switching voltages observed earlier and the variation with composition of electrical resistivity and thermal diffusivity of Ge17Te83 - xTlx glasses obtained in the present study. Biopolymer used for the production of nanoparticles (NPs) has attracted increasing attention. In the presence article we use aqueous solution of polysaccharide Cyamopsis tetragonaloba commonly known as guar gum (GG), from plants. GG acts as reductive preparation of silver nanoparticles which are found to be <10. nm in size. The uniformity of the NPs size was measured by the SEM and TEM, while a face centered cubic structure of crystalline silver nanoparticles was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction technique. Aqueous ammonia sensing study of polymer/silver nanoparticles nanocomposite (GG/AgNPs NC) was performed by optical method based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The performances of optical sensor were investigated which provide the excellent result. The response time of 2-3. s and the detection limit of ammonia solution, 1. ppm were found at room temperature. Thus, in future this room temperature optical ammonia sensor can be used for clinical and medical diagnosis for detecting low ammonia level in biological fluids, such as plasma, sweat, saliva, cerebrospinal liquid or biological samples in general for various biomedical applications in human. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Novel ultrasound-sensitive nanocapsules were designed via layer-by-layer assembly (LbL) of polyelectrolytes for remote activated release of biomolecules/drug. Nanocapsules embedded with silver nanoparticles in the walls were synthesized by alternate assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica template followed by nanoparticle synthesis and subsequent template removal thus yielding nanocapsules. The silver NPs were synthesized in situ within the capsule walls under controlled conditions. The nanocapsules were found to be well dispersed and the silver NPs were evenly distributed within the shell. FITC-dextran permeated easily into the capsules containing silver NP's due to the pores generated during the formation of NP's. When the loaded nanocapsules were sonicated, the presence of the silver NPs in the shell structure led to rupturing of the shell into smaller fragments thus releasing the FITC-dextran. Such nanocapsules have the potential to be used as drug delivery vehicles and offer the scope for further development in the areas of modern medicine, material science, and biochemistry.
