A critical step in the dissemination of ovarian cancer is the formation of multicellular spheroids from cells shed from the primary tumour. The objectives of this study were to apply bioengineered three-dimensional (3D) microenvironments for culturing ovarian cancer spheroids in vitro and simultaneously to build on a mathematical model describing the growth of multicellular spheroids in these biomimetic matrices. Cancer cells derived from human epithelial ovarian carcinoma were embedded within biomimetic hydrogels of varying stiffness and grown for up to 4 weeks. Immunohistochemistry, imaging and growth analyses were used to quantify the dependence of cell proliferation and apoptosis on matrix stiffness, long-term culture and treatment with the anti-cancer drug paclitaxel. The mathematical model was formulated as a free boundary problem in which each spheroid was treated as an incompressible porous medium. The functional forms used to describe the rates of cell proliferation and apoptosis were motivated by the experimental work and predictions of the mathematical model compared with the experimental output. This work aimed to establish whether it is possible to simulate solid tumour growth on the basis of data on spheroid size, cell proliferation and cell death within these spheroids. The mathematical model predictions were in agreement with the experimental data set and simulated how the growth of cancer spheroids was influenced by mechanical and biochemical stimuli including matrix stiffness, culture duration and administration of a chemotherapeutic drug. Our computational model provides new perspectives on experimental results and has informed the design of new 3D studies of chemoresistance of multicellular cancer spheroids.

This paper gives a review of recent progress in the design of numerical methods for computing the trajectories (sample paths) of solutions to stochastic differential equations. We give a brief survey of the area focusing on a number of application areas where approximations to strong solutions are important, with a particular focus on computational biology applications, and give the necessary analytical tools for understanding some of the important concepts associated with stochastic processes. We present the stochastic Taylor series expansion as the fundamental mechanism for constructing effective numerical methods, give general results that relate local and global order of convergence and mention the Magnus expansion as a mechanism for designing methods that preserve the underlying structure of the problem. We also present various classes of explicit and implicit methods for strong solutions, based on the underlying structure of the problem. Finally, we discuss implementation issues relating to maintaining the Brownian path, efficient simulation of stochastic integrals and variable-step-size implementations based on various types of control.

A novel gold coated femtosecond laser nanostructured sapphire surface – an “optical nose” - based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for detecting vapours of explosive substances was investigated. Four different nitroaromatic vapours at room temperature were tested. Sensor responses were unambiguous and showed response in the range of 0.05 – 15 uM at 25 °C. The laser fabricated substrate nanostructures produced up to an eight-fold increase in Raman signal over that observed on the unstructured portions of the substrate. This work demonstrates a simple sensing system that is compatible with commercial manufacturing practices to detect taggants in explosives which can undertake as part of an integrated security or investigative mission.

Wing length is a key character for essential behaviours related to bird flight such as migration and foraging. In the present study, we initiate the search for the genes underlying wing length in birds by studying a long-distance migrant, the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus). In this species wing length is an evolutionary interesting trait with pronounced latitudinal gradient and sex-specific selection regimes in local populations. We performed a quantitative trait locus (QTL) scan for wing length in great reed warblers using phenotypic, genotypic, pedigree and linkage map data from our long-term study population in Sweden. We applied the linkage analysis mapping method implemented in GRIDQTL (a new web-based software) and detected a genome-wide significant QTL for wing length on chromosome 2, to our knowledge, the first detected QTL in wild birds. The QTL extended over 25 cM and accounted for a substantial part (37%) of the phenotypic variance of the trait. A genome scan for tarsus length (a bodysize-related trait) did not show any signal, implying that the wing-length QTL on chromosome 2 was not associated with body size. Our results provide a first important step into understanding the genetic architecture of avian wing length, and give opportunities to study the evolutionary dynamics of wing length at the locus level. Pretreatments of sugarcane bagasse for saccharification using different acid-catalysed imidazolium IL solutions (containing 20% water) at 130 °C for 30 min were investigated. At the same solution pH, pretreatment effectiveness in terms of glucan digestibility, delignification and xylan removal were similar for aqueous 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methane sulfonate (BMIMCH3SO3), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate (BMIMCH3SO4), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIMCl) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl). Decreasing solution pH of aqueous IL systems from 6.0 to 0.4 increased bagasse delignification and xylan removal, and as a result, improved glucan digestibility. The glucan digestibilities for bagasse samples pretreated by IL solutions with pH ≤ 0.9 were > 90% after 72 h of enzymatic hydrolysis. Without pH adjustment, the effectiveness of these aqueous IL solutions (except BMIMCH3SO3 because of its low natural pH of 0.9) to deconstruct the biomass was poor and the glucan digestibilities of pretreated bagasse samples were < 20%. These results show that pretreatment effectiveness of aqueous imidazolium ILs can simply be estimated from solution pH rather than hydrogen bond basicity (β) of the IL solution.

Odours emitted by flowers are complex blends of volatile compounds. These odours are learnt by flower-visiting insect species, improving their recognition of rewarding flowers and thus foraging efficiency. We investigated the flexibility of floral odour learning by testing whether adult moths recognize single compounds common to flowers on which they forage. Dual choice preference tests on Helicoverpa armigera moths allowed free flying moths to forage on one of three flower species; Argyranthemum frutescens (federation daisy), Cajanus cajan (pigeonpea) or Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco). Results showed that, (i) a benzenoid (phenylacetaldehyde) and a monoterpene (linalool) were subsequently recognized after visits to flowers that emitted these volatile constituents, (ii) in a preference test, other monoterpenes in the flowers' odour did not affect the moths' ability to recognize the monoterpene linalool and (iii) relative preferences for two volatiles changed after foraging experience on a single flower species that emitted both volatiles. The importance of using free flying insects and real flowers to understand the mechanisms involved in floral odour learning in nature are discussed in the context of our findings.

Strong binding of isolated carbon dioxide (CO2) on aluminium nitride (AlN) single walled nanotubes is verified using two different functionals. Two optimized configurations corresponding to physisorption and chemisorption are linked by a low energy barrier, such that the chemisorbed state is accessible and thermodynamically favored at low temperatures. In contrast, N2 is found only to form a physisorbed complex with the AlN nanotube, suggesting the potential application of aluminium nitride based materials for CO2 fixation. The effect of nanotube diameter on gas adsorption properties is also discussed. The diameter is found to have an important effect on the chemisorption of CO2, but has little effect on the physisorption of either CO2 or N2.

The adsorption of carbon dioxide and nitrogen molecules on aluminum nitride (AlN) nanostructures has been explored using first-principle computational methods. Optimized configurations corresponding to physisorption and, subsequentially, chemisorption of CO2 are identified, in contrast to N2, for which only a physisorption structure is found. Transition-state searches imply a low energy barrier between the physisorption and chemisorption states for CO2 such that the latter is accessible and thermodynamically favored at room temperature. The effective binding energy of the optimized chemisorption structure is apparently larger than those for other CO2 adsorptive materials, suggesting the potential for application of aluminum nitride nanostructures for carbon dioxide capture and storage.

Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted increasing attention in recent years owning to their potential applications in energy conversion, environment protection, and so on. Here, from first-principles calculations, we report the electronic structure modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in response to carbon doping. We showed that each dopant atom can induce a local magnetic moment of 1.0 μB in non-magnetic g-C3N4. At the doping concentration of 1/14, the local magnetic moments of the most stable doping configuration which has the dopant atom at the center of heptazine unit prefer to align in a parallel way leading to long-range ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. When the joint N atom is replaced by C atom, the system favors an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at unstrained state, but can be tuned to ferromagnetism (FM) by applying biaxial tensile strain. More interestingly, the FM state of the strained system is half-metallic with abundant states at the Fermi level in one spin channel and a band gap of 1.82 eV in another spin channel. The Curie temperature (Tc) was also evaluated using a mean-field theory and Monte Carlo simulations within the Ising model. Such tunable electron spin-polarization and ferromagnetism are quite promising for the applications of graphitic carbon nitride in spintronics.

Infrared spectra of NO, NO2 and CO adsorbed on Rh/Al2O3 have been recorded in order to identify the role of surface Rh-NO+ species in the reactions of NO and CO on Rh surfaces. Rh-NO+ was generated by thermally activated adsorption of NO, adsorption of NO on oxidised Rh or by adsorption of NO2. The latter also gave adsorbed nitrate on both Rh and the alumina support. In the presence of CO, Rh-NO+ acted as a precursor of the Rh(CO)(NO) mixed surface complex of CO and NO.

Infrared spectra are reported of methyl formate and formaldehyde adsorbed at 300 K on silica, Cu/SiO2 reduced in hydrogen and Cu/SiO2 which had been oxidised by exposure to nitrous oxide after reduction. Silanol groups on silica form hydrogen bonds with carbonyl groups in weakly adsorbed methyl formate molecules. Methyl formate ligates via its carbonyl groups to Cu atoms in the surface of reduced copper. A low residual concentration of surface oxygen on copper promoted the slow reaction of ligated methyl formate to give a bridging formate species on copper and adsorbed methoxy groups. Methyl formate did not ligate to an oxidised copper surface but was rapidly chemisorbed to give unidentate formate and methoxy species. Formaldehyde slowly polymerises on silica to form trioxane and other oxymethylene species. The reaction is faster over Cu/SiO2 which, in the reduced state, also catalyses the formation of bridging formate anions adsorbed on copper. The reaction between formaldehyde and oxidised Cu/SiO2 leads to both unidentate and bidentate formate and adsorbed water.

Infrared spectra are reported of formic acid adsorbed at 300 K on a reduced copper catalyst (Cu/SiO2) and a copper surface which had been oxidised by exposure to nitrous oxide. Formic acid was weakly adsorbed on the silica support. Ligation of formic acid to the copper surface occurred only on the reduced catalyst. Dissociative adsorption resulted in the formation of unidentate formate on the oxidised catalyst. The presence of reduced copper metal instigated a rapid reorientation to a bidentate formate species.

FTIR spectra are reported of CO adsorbed on silica-supported copper catalysts prepared from copper(II) acetate monohydrate. Fully oxidised catalyst gave bands due to CO on CuO, isolated Cu2+ cations on silica and anion vacancy sites in CuO. The highly dispersed CuO aggregated on reduction to metal particles which gave bands due to adsorbed CO characteristic of both low-index exposed planes and stepped sites on high-index planes. Partial surface oxidation with N2O or H2O generated Cu+ adsorption sites which were slowly reduced to Cu° by CO at 300 K. Surface carbonate initially formed from CO was also slowly depleted with time with the generation of CO2. The results are consistent with adsorbed carbonate being an intermediate in the water-gas shift reaction of H2O and CO to H2 and CO2.

Infrared spectra are reported of methanol adsorbed at 295 K on reduced Cu/SiO2 and on Cu/SiO2 which had been preoxidised by exposure to excess nitrous oxide. Methanol was chemisorbed on reduced Cu/SiO2 to give methoxy species on both silica and copper, gave a trace of formate on copper via reaction with residual surface oxygen, and was weakly adsorbed at SiOH sites on the silica support. Heating the adsorbed species at 393 K led to the loss of methoxy groups on copper and the concomitant formation of a bidentate surface formate. Heating reduced Cu/SiO2 in methanol at 538 K initially gave both gaseous and adsorbed (on Cu) methyl formate which subsequently decomposed to CO and hydrogen. The reactions of methanol with oxidised Cu/SiO2 were similar to those for the reduced catalyst although surface oxygen promoted the formation of surface methoxy groups on copper. Subsequent heating at 393 K led first to unidentate formate before the appearance of bidentate formate.

Morphology changes induced in polycrystalline silver catalysts as a result of heating in either oxygen, water or oxygen-methanol atmospheres have been investigated by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), FT-Raman spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). The silver catalyst of interest consisted of two distinct particle types, one of which contained a significant concentration of sub-surface hydroxy species (in addition to surface adsorbed atomic oxygen). Heating the sample to 663 K resulted in the production of 'pin-holes' in the silver structure as a consequence of near-surface explosions caused by sub-surface hydroxy recombination. Furthermore, 'pin-holes' were predominantly found in the vicinity of surface defects, such as platelets and edge structures. Reaction between methanol and oxygen also resulted in the formation of 'pin-holes' in the silver surface, which were inherently associated with the catalytic process. A reaction mechanism is suggested that involves the interaction of methanol with sub-surface oxygen species to form sub-surface hydroxy groups. The sub-surface hydroxy species subsequently erupt through the silver surface to again produce 'pin-holes'.
