The Iowa demonstration project to promote the rehabilitation of bridge deck concrete by rebonding delaminations with injected epoxy is a 150 ft x 150 ft high truss bridge on Iowa route No. 210 over Indian Creek near Maxwell in Story County (Service level D, AADT-730, Inventory Rating HS-16.9, Operating Rating HS-25). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of repairing a delaminated bridge deck by epoxy injection, specifically a bridge deck with a delaminated portland cement concrete overlay. Observations noted during the project lead to the following conclusions: The delaminations rebonded with epoxy have remained solid through five years. The percentage of delamination has stayed essentially the same for both the epoxy injected and non-repaired areas. Epoxy injection appears to be a practical, cost effective alternative to other forms of deck rehabilitation when undertaken at the proper time. Cost effectiveness would reduce dramatically if delayed until breakouts have occurred. On the other hand it would be a slow, labor intensive process if undertaken too early when delaminations are small.

Research funds were approved for the purchase of equipment designed to proportion and inject epoxy resins into delaminated areas of bridge decks. Through investigation and refining of this process, it was anticipated that a maintenance procedure would be developed to delay spalling of bridge decks by "gluing down" delaminated areas before spalling occurred.

The purpose of this research project is to determine if (1) epoxy lane markings will last an entire winter season without replacement, (2) epoxy lane marking is an economical alternative to standard paint on high-traffic multi-lane roadways where lane changing is frequent, and (3) there are worthwhile benefits derived from thorough cleaning of the pavement surface before painting. The success of epoxy lane marking depends on the success of the equipment with which it is mixed and applied. The epoxy lane marking material, if properly mixed and placed on a clean surface, has the durability required to withstand a high traffic volume and frequent lane changes for at least one year.

This volume, Volume 1--Technical Report, contains the problem description, literature review, and survey results; descriptions of the test specimens, experimental tests, and analytical models; discussions of the analytical and experimental results; summary, conclusions, and recommendations; list of references; and acknowledgment. Volume 2--Supplemental Report contains additional information in the form of summarized responses to the questionnaires; graphs showing the strand forces; figures showing the geometry of the specimens and concrete crack patterns that formed in the strand transfer length and strand development length specimens; and graphs of the concrete strains in the strand transfer length specimens, load-point deflections, and strand-slip measurements for the strand development length specimens.

Appendix A contains the questionnaires that were sent to the design agencies and precast concrete producers. A summary of the results to the questions on the surveys are given as the number of respondents who provided the same answers and as paraphrased comments from the respondents. Appendix B contains graphs of strand force versus time, strand force versus temperature, and strand force versus strand cutting sequence for the concrete castings. Appendix C contains figures that show the location of each specimen in the prestress bed, the geometrical configurations for the strand transfer length (T-type) specimens and strand development length (D-type) specimens, and the concrete cracks that developed in some of the T-type specimens when they were prestressed. Appendix D contains figures that show the concrete cracks that developed in the D-type specimens during the strand development length tests. For each of these tests, the sequence of the failure for the specimen is specified. Appendix E contains graphs of concrete strain versus distance from the end of the T-type specimens that were instrumented with internal embedment strain gages. Appendix F contains graphs of load versus load-point deflection and load versus strand-slip for the strand development length tests of the D-type specimens.

A one mile section each of thermoplastic and epoxy pavement marking materials were placed on new ACC pavement near Carroll, IA on Highway 30. The markings were evaluated for four years to see if they were suitable materials for durable pavement markings. The epoxy markings were inadvertently repainted after two years. They were performing well up to that time with little plow damage and good retroreflectivity. The thermoplastic dash lines suffered heavy snow plow damage after the first year and were repainted after the third winter. The thermoplastic edge lines performed fairly well for four years.

In recent years, the nighttime wet pavement retroreflectivity of pavement markings has become an important issue. In a effort to continue research in this area, the Iowa Department of Transportation evaluated the effectiveness of Visibeads in the Des Moines metropolitan area. Visibeads are three to four times larger in diameter then conventional glass beads. This larger size provides for better retroreflectivity under nighttime wet pavement conditions. The areas chosen for evaluation do not have roadway lighting, therefore, making them a good choice for Visibeads. Although the DOT has tested Visibeads in the past with moderate success, it is believed that using Visibeads with longer life markings such as epoxy will improve their performance.

The report includes background information on the development of ETP, a discussion of the field tests and evaluations, the material composition and equipment modifications for applying ETP. The package also includes material specifications for purchasing ETP and specifications for the application of ETP by contract.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IaDOT) was interested in investigating the use of epoxy adhesive anchorages for the attachment of posts used in the BR27C combination bridge rail system. Alternative anchorage concepts were developed using a modified version of the ACI 318-11 procedures for embedded anchor design. Four design concepts were developed for review by IaDOT, including: (1) a four-bolt square anchorage, (2) a four-bolt spread anchorage, (3) a twobolt centered anchorage, and (4) a two-bolt offset anchorage. IaDOT representatives selected the four-bolt spread anchorage and the two-bolt offset anchorage as the preferred designs for evaluation. In addition to these two proposed configurations, IaDOT also requested that the researchers evaluate a third option that had been previously installed on the US-20 bridge near Hardin, IA. The proposed alternative anchorages and the original cast-in-place anchorage for the BR27C combination bridge rail were evaluated through dynamic component testing. The test of the original cast-in-place anchorage was used a baseline for comparison with the alternative designs. Test no. IBP-1 of the original cast-in-place anchorage developed a peak load of 22.9 kips (101.9 kN) at a deflection of 1.5 in. (38 mm). All three of the tested alternative anchorages provided greater load capacity than the original cast-in-place design and were deemed acceptable surrogates. Of the three alternative designs, the two-bolt offset design was deemed the best option.

Fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) root canal posts are suggested to have biomechanical benefits over traditional metallic posts, but they lack good adhesion to resin composites. The aim of this series of studies was to evaluate the adhesion of individually formed fibre-reinforced composite material to composite resin and dentin, as well as some mechanical properties. Flexural properties were evaluated and compared between individually formed FRC post material and different prefabricated posts. The depth of polymerization of the individually formed FRC post material was evaluated with IR spectrophotometry and microhardness measurements, and compared to that of resin without fibres. Bonding properties of the individually formed FRC post to resin cements and dentin were tested using Pull-out- and Push-out-force tests, evaluated with scanning electron microscopy, and compared to those of prefabricated FRC and metal posts. Load-bearing capacity and microstrain were evaluated and failure mode assessment was made on incisors restored with individually formed FRC posts of different structures and prefabricated posts. The results of these studies show that the individually polymerized and formed FRC post material had higher flexural properties compared to the commercial prefabricated FRC posts. The individually polymerized FRC material showed almost the same degree of conversion after light polymerization as monomer resin without fibres. Moreover, it was found that the individually formed FRC post material with a semiinterpenetrating polymer network (IPN) polymer matrix bonded better to composite resin luting cement, than did the prefabricated posts with a cross-linked polymer matrix. Furthermore, it was found that, contrary to the other posts, there were no adhesive failures between the individually formed FRC posts and composite resin luting cement. This suggests better interfacial adhesion of cements to these posts. Although no differences in load-bearing capacity or microstrain could be seen, the incisors restored with individually formed FRC posts with a hollow structure showed more favourable failures compared to other prefabricated posts. These studies suggest that it is possible to use individually formed FRC material with semi-IPN polymer matrix as root canal post material. They also indicate that there are benefits especially regarding the bonding properties to composite resin and dentin with this material compared to prefabricated FRC post material with a cross-linked matrix. Furthermore, clinically more repairable failures were found with this material compared to those of prefabricated posts.

Viimeiset vuosikymmenet ovat olleet voimakasta kansainvälistymisen aikaa liiketoiminnassa, jonka myötä globaalista hankinnasta on tullut yhä enenevässä määrin hyvin merkittävä osa yritysten hankintastrategiaa. Kansainvälisten hankintapäätösten tekeminen vaatii yritykseltä kansainvälistymisen asteesta riippuen taloudellisia-, ajallisia- ja henkilöresursseja. Suhteessa näihin panoksiin nähden kansainvälisestä hankinnasta on saavutettavissa merkittäviä etuja, joista tärkeimpiä ovat kustannussäästöt, kilpailuetu sekä laatu- ja teknologiaedut. Projektiluontoisessa liiketoiminnassa hankintastrategian muodostamiseen ja hankintaprosesseihin vaikuttavat yksittäisten projektien ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut tavoitteet. Projektitoiminnassa hankintastrategian mukauttaminen kulloinkin vallitseviin olosuhteisiin, tavoitteisiin ja asiakkaiden tarpeisiin on projektien onnistumisen kannalta tärkeää. Tutkielman teoriaosassa tarkasteltiin projektihankintaprosesseja sekä projekteihin perustuvan liiketoiminnan ominaispiirteitä ja niiden vaikutuksia hankintaan. Teorian keskeisimpänä asiakokonaisuutena on kansain-välinen hankintastrategia osana yrityksen kokonaisvaltaista hankinta-strategiaa. Globaalia hankintastrategiaa on tarkasteltu investointien, kilpailuedun, strategian muodostuksen, motiivien ja esteiden sekä sen eri komponenttien osalta. Empiiriaosassa tutkittiin tutkielman case –yrityksen ja toimeksiantajan, Joptek Oy Compositesin hankinnan nykytilaa sekä kansainvälisen hankintastrategian eri osa-alueita. Haastattelun avulla suoritetun tutkimuksen mukaan Joptek Oy:n liiketoimintaympäristö edellyttää yrityksen entistä aktiivisempaa panostamista kansainväliseen hankintaan. Projektiliiketoiminnassa kansainvälisen hankintastrategian muodostamisessa on pyrittävä yrityksen tarpeisiin vastaaviin räätälöityihin ratkaisuihin, huomioiden erillisten projektien muutokset ja riskitekijät.

The construction of a tubular hydrogen ion-selective potentiometric electrode without inner reference solution, based on the tridodecylamine (TDDA) ionophore, and its evaluation in a flow system are described. TDDA was dissolved in 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether, dispersed in a PVC membrane and applied directly to a conducting support which consisted of an epoxy resin and graphite mixture. The electrode was designed with a tubular geometry to effort facilities to be coupled as part of a flow injection network. The main working characteristics such as response time, linear pH range, selectivity and life time were evaluated and compared with those obtained which a conventionally shaped electrode based on the same sensor. The electrode showed a slope of 51-52 mV dec-1 within a linear pH range from 4.0 up to 12.0.

This article presents the results of a study of the efficiency of silanation process of calcium phosphate glasses particles and its effect on the bioactivity behavior of glasspoly( methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites. Two different calcium phosphate glasses: 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-11Na2O (BV11) and 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-6Na2O-5TiO2 (G5) were synthesized and treated with silane coupling agent. The glasses obtained were characterized by Microprobe and BET while the efficiency of silanation process was determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermal Analysis (DTA and TG)techniques. The content of coupling agent chemically tightly bond to the silanated glasses ascended to 1.69 6 0.02 wt % for BV11sil glass and 0.93 6 0.01 wt % for G5sil glass. The in vitro bioactivity test carried out in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) revealed certain bioactive performance with the use of both silanated glasses in a 30% (by weight) as filler of the PMMA composites because of a superficial deposition of an apatite-like layer with low content of CO3 22 and HPO4 22 in its structure after soaking for 30 days occurred. The construction and analytical evaluation of a coated graphite Al(III) ion-selective electrode, based on the ionic pair formed between the Al(F)n3-n anion and tricaprylylmethylammonium cation (Aliquat 336S) incorporated on a poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) matrix membrane are described. A thin membrane film of this ionic pair and dibutylphthalate (DBPh) in PVC was deposited directly on a cylindric graphite rod (2 cm length x 0.5 cm diameter) attached to the end of a glass tube using epoxy resin. The membrane solution was prepared by dissolving 40% (m/m) of PVC in 10 mL of tetrahydrofuran following addition of 45% (m/m) of DBPh and 15% (m/m) of the ionic pair. The effect of membrane composition, fluoride concentration, and several concomitants as potential interferences on the electrode response were investigated. The aluminium(III) ion-selective electrode showed a linear response ranging from 1.4 x 10-4 to 1.0 x 10-2 mol L-1, a detection limit of 4.0 x 10-5 mol L-1, aslope of -54.3±0.2mV dec-1 and a lifetime of more than 1 year (over 3000 determinations for each membrane). The slope indicates that the ion-selective electrode responds preferentially to the Al(F)4- species. Application of this electrode for the aluminium(III) determination in stomach anti-acid samples is reported.
