Oferim als estudiants universitaris i als lectors interessats aquesta guia didàctica de la matemàtica universitària com a fruit dels nostres anys de docència de les matemàtiques a la Universitat. El resultat final ha esdevingut una col·lecció de setze petits volums agrupats en els dos mòduls d'Àlgebra Lineal i de Càlcul Infinitesimal. En aquest volum es generalitza en primer lloc el concepte d'aplicació entre dos espais vectorials i s'introdueix la important definició d'aplicació lineal. Pel seu estudi s'utilitza l'àlgebra matricial. A continuació es desenvolupen els temes de valors i vectors propis, la diagonalització d'endomorfismes i l'estudi de les formes quadràtiques

El resultat final ha esdevingut una col·lecció de setze petits volums agrupats en els dos mòduls d'Àlgebra Lineal i de Càlcul Infinitesimal. Amb aquest sisè volum de la col•lecció iniciem l’estudi de l’Àlgebra vectorial a partir de conceptes propers a la intuïció com són els vectors del pla i de l’espai per, a continuació, fer una generalització del concepte de vector a altres ens matemàtics com polinomis, successions, magnituds econòmiques, etc. En aquest volum utilitzarem sovint la notació matricial, ja coneguda i emprada en volums anteriors, i que esdevé una eina idònia per facilitar la notació dels conceptes i del càlcul entre vectors. Seguim amb l’estudi axiomàtic de l’estructura d’espai vectorial i les seves propietats, que com veurem en el proper volum ens permetrà, entre altres aplicacions a l’economia, deduir els valors i vectors propis d’un endomorfisme i diagonalitzar formes quadràtiques

On the universal TRO of a JC*-triple, ideals and tensor products

In a development from material introduced in recent work, we discuss the interconnections between ternary rings of operators (TROs) and right C*-algebras generated by JC*-triples, deducing that every JC*-triple possesses a largest universally reversible ideal, that the universal TRO commutes with appropriate tensor products and establishing a reversibility criterion for type I JW*-triples.

Realising the cup product of local Tate duality

We present an explicit description, in terms of central simple algebras, of a cup product map which occurs in the statement of local Tate duality for Galois modules of prime cardinality p. Given cocycles f and g, we construct a central simple algebra of dimension p^2 whose class in the Brauer group gives the cup product f\cup g. This algebra is as small as possible.

Matrix Representation of the Stationary Measure for the Multispecies TASEP

In this work we construct the stationary measure of the N species totally asymmetric simple exclusion process in a matrix product formulation. We make the connection between the matrix product formulation and the queueing theory picture of Ferrari and Martin. In particular, in the standard representation, the matrices act on the space of queue lengths. For N > 2 the matrices in fact become tensor products of elements of quadratic algebras. This enables us to give a purely algebraic proof of the stationary measure which we present for N=3.

ON AMINO ACID AND CODON ASSIGNMENT IN ALGEBRAIC MODELS FOR THE GENETIC CODE

We give a list of all possible schemes for performing amino acid and codon assignments in algebraic models for the genetic code, which are consistent with a few simple symmetry principles, in accordance with the spirit of the algebraic approach to the evolution of the genetic code proposed by Hornos and Hornos. Our results are complete in the sense of covering all the algebraic models that arise within this approach, whether based on Lie groups/Lie algebras, on Lie superalgebras or on finite groups.

Involutions of RA Loops

Let L be an RA loop, that is, a loop whose loop ring over any coefficient ring R is an alternative, but not associative, ring. Let l bar right arrow l(theta) denote an involution on L and extend it linearly to the loop ring RL. An element alpha is an element of RL is symmetric if alpha(theta) = alpha and skew-symmetric if alpha(theta) = -alpha. In this paper, we show that there exists an involution making the symmetric elements of RL commute if and only if the characteristic of R is 2 or theta is the canonical involution on L, and an involution making the skew-symmetric elements of RL commute if and only if the characteristic of R is 2 or 4.

Irreducible morphisms of categories of complexes

We study irreducible morphisms of complexes. In particular, we show that the irreducible morphisms having one (finite) irreducible submorphism fall into three canonical forms and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a given morphism of that type to be irreducible. Our characterization of the above mentioned type of irreducible morphisms of complexes characterizes also some class of irreducible morphisms of the derived category D(-)(A) for A a finite dimensional k-algebra, where k is a field. Skew-symmetric identities of octonions

Quadratic alternative superalgebras are introduced and their super-identities and central functions on one odd generator are described. As a corollary, all multilinear skew-symmetric identities and central polynomials of octonions are classified. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ANTISYMMETRIC ELEMENTS IN GROUP RINGS II

Let R be a commutative ring, G a group and RG its group ring. Let phi : RG -> RG denote the R-linear extension of an involution phi defined on G. An element x in RG is said to be phi-antisymmetric if phi(x) = -x. A characterization is given of when the phi-antisymmetric elements of RG commute. This is a completion of earlier work.

A NOTE ON FREE GROUPS IN THE RING OF FRACTIONS OF SKEW POLYNOMIAL RINGS

Let L be a function field over the rationals and let D denote the skew field of fractions of L[t; sigma], the skew polynomial ring in t, over L, with automorphism sigma. We prove that the multiplicative group D(x) of D contains a free noncyclic subgroup.

Lie properties of crossed products

Let F-sigma(lambda)vertical bar G vertical bar be a crossed product of a group G and the field F. We study the Lie properties of F-sigma(lambda)vertical bar G vertical bar in order to obtain a characterization of those crossed products which are upper (lower) Lie nilpotent and Lie (n, m)-Engel. Polar orthogonal representations of real reductive algebraic groups

We prove that a polar orthogonal representation of a real reductive algebraic group has the same closed orbits as the isotropy representation of a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space. We also develop a partial structural theory of polar orthogonal representations of real reductive algebraic groups which slightly generalizes some results of the structural theory of real reductive Lie algebras.
