Environmental concerns and the shortage in the fossil fuel reserves have been potentiating the growth and globalization of distributed generation. Another resource that has been increasing its importance is the demand response, which is used to change consumers’ consumption profile, helping to reduce peak demand. Aiming to support small players’ participation in demand response events, the Curtailment Service Provider emerged. This player works as an aggregator for demand response events. The control of small and medium players which act in smart grid and micro grid environments is enhanced with a multi-agent system with artificial intelligence techniques – the MASGriP (Multi-Agent Smart Grid Platform). Using strategic behaviours in each player, this system simulates the profile of real players by using software agents. This paper shows the importance of modeling these behaviours for studying this type of scenarios. A case study with three examples shows the differences between each player and the best behaviour in order to achieve the higher profit in each situation.

This paper presents the Realistic Scenarios Generator (RealScen), a tool that processes data from real electricity markets to generate realistic scenarios that enable the modeling of electricity market players’ characteristics and strategic behavior. The proposed tool provides significant advantages to the decision making process in an electricity market environment, especially when coupled with a multi-agent electricity markets simulator. The generation of realistic scenarios is performed using mechanisms for intelligent data analysis, which are based on artificial intelligence and data mining algorithms. These techniques allow the study of realistic scenarios, adapted to the existing markets, and improve the representation of market entities as software agents, enabling a detailed modeling of their profiles and strategies. This work contributes significantly to the understanding of the interactions between the entities acting in electricity markets by increasing the capability and realism of market simulations.

A composição musical é um tema de muito interesse para a computação evolucionária dentro da área da inteligência artificial. É uma área que tem sofrido vários desenvolvimentos ao longo dos últimos anos pois o interesse em que hajam computadores que façam obras musicais é deveras aliciante. Este trabalho tem por objectivo realizar mais um passo nesse sentido. Assim, foi desenvolvida uma aplicação informática que realiza composições musicais de dois géneros distintos: Músicas Infantis e Músicas Blues. A aplicação foi implementada com recurso aos Algoritmos Genéticos, que são os algoritmos evolucionários mais populares da área da computação evolucionária. O trabalho foi estruturado em duas fases de desenvolvimento. Na primeira fase, realizou-se um levantamento estatÃstico sobre as caracterÃsticas especÃficas de cada um dos géneros musicais. Analisaram-se quinze músicas de cada género musical, com o intuito de se chegar a uma proporção do uso que cada nota tem em cada um dos casos. Na segunda fase, desenvolveu-se o software que compõe as músicas com implementação de um algoritmo genético. Além disso, foi também desenvolvida uma interface gráfica que permite ao utilizador a escolha do género musical que pretende compor. O algoritmo genético começa por gerar uma população inicial de potenciais soluções de acordo com a escolha do utilizador, realizando, de seguida, o ciclo que caracteriza o algoritmo genético. A população inicial é constituÃda por soluções que seguem as regras que foram implementadas de acordo com os dados recolhidos ao longo da primeira fase. Foi também implementada uma interface de avaliação, através da qual, o utilizador pode ouvir cada uma das músicas para posterior avaliação em termos de fitness. O estado de evolução do algoritmo é apresentado, numa segunda interface, a qual facilita a clareza e justiça na avaliação ao longo de todo o processo. Esta última apresenta informação sobre a média das fitness da geração anterior e actual, sendo assim possÃvel ter uma noção da evolução do algoritmo, no sentido de se obterem resultados satisfatórios no que diz respeito à s composições musicais.

Fractional Calculus (FC) goes back to the beginning of the theory of differential calculus. Nevertheless, the application of FC just emerged in the last two decades due to the progress in the area of nonlinear dynamics. This article discusses several applications of fractional calculus in science and engineering, namely: the control of heat systems, the tuning of PID controllers based on fractional calculus concepts and the dynamics in hexapod locomotion.

The paper presents a multi-robot cooperative framework to estimate the 3D position of dynamic targets, based on bearing-only vision measurements. The uncertainty of the observation provided by each robot equipped with a bearing-only vision system is effectively addressed for cooperative triangulation purposes by weighing the contribution of each monocular bearing ray in a probabilistic manner. The envisioned framework is evaluated in an outdoor scenario with a team of heterogeneous robots composed of an Unmanned Ground and Aerial Vehicle.

A Computação Evolutiva enquadra-se na área da Inteligência Artificial e é um ramo das ciências da computação que tem vindo a ser aplicado na resolução de problemas em diversas áreas da Engenharia. Este trabalho apresenta o estado da arte da Computação Evolutiva, assim como algumas das suas aplicações no ramo da eletrónica, denominada Eletrónica Evolutiva (ou Hardware Evolutivo), enfatizando a sÃntese de circuitos digitais combinatórios. Em primeiro lugar apresenta-se a Inteligência Artificial, passando à Computação Evolutiva, nas suas principais vertentes: os Algoritmos Evolutivos baseados no processo da evolução das espécies de Charles Darwin e a Inteligência dos Enxames baseada no comportamento coletivo de alguns animais. No que diz respeito aos Algoritmos Evolutivos, descrevem-se as estratégias evolutivas, a programação genética, a programação evolutiva e com maior ênfase, os Algoritmos Genéticos. Em relação à Inteligência dos Enxames, descreve-se a otimização por colônia de formigas e a otimização por enxame de partÃculas. Em simultâneo realizou-se também um estudo da Eletrónica Evolutiva, explicando sucintamente algumas das áreas de aplicação, entre elas: a robótica, as FPGA, o roteamento de placas de circuito impresso, a sÃntese de circuitos digitais e analógicos, as telecomunicações e os controladores. A tÃtulo de concretizar o estudo efetuado, apresenta-se um caso de estudo da aplicação dos algoritmos genéticos na sÃntese de circuitos digitais combinatórios, com base na análise e comparação de três referências de autores distintos. Com este estudo foi possÃvel comparar, não só os resultados obtidos por cada um dos autores, mas também a forma como os algoritmos genéticos foram implementados, nomeadamente no que diz respeito aos parâmetros, operadores genéticos utilizados, função de avaliação, implementação em hardware e tipo de codificação do circuito.

Contextualization is critical in every decision making process. Adequate responses to problems depend not only on the variables with direct influence on the outcomes, but also on a correct contextualization of the problem regarding the surrounding environment. Electricity markets are dynamic environments with increasing complexity, potentiated by the last decades' restructuring process. Dealing with the growing complexity and competitiveness in this sector brought the need for using decision support tools. A solid example is MASCEM (Multi-Agent Simulator of Competitive Electricity Markets), whose players' decisions are supported by another multiagent system – ALBidS (Adaptive Learning strategic Bidding System). ALBidS uses artificial intelligence techniques to endow market players with adaptive learning capabilities that allow them to achieve the best possible results in market negotiations. This paper studies the influence of context awareness in the decision making process of agents acting in electricity markets. A context analysis mechanism is proposed, considering important characteristics of each negotiation period, so that negotiating agents can adapt their acting strategies to different contexts. The main conclusion is that context-dependant responses improve the decision making process. Suiting actions to different contexts allows adapting the behaviour of negotiating entities to different circumstances, resulting in profitable outcomes.

This paper presents a decision support methodology for electricity market players’ bilateral contract negotiations. The proposed model is based on the application of game theory, using artificial intelligence to enhance decision support method’s adaptive features. This model is integrated in AiD-EM (Adaptive Decision Support for Electricity Markets Negotiations), a multi-agent system that provides electricity market players with strategic behavior capabilities to improve their outcomes from energy contracts’ negotiations. Although a diversity of tools that enable the study and simulation of electricity markets has emerged during the past few years, these are mostly directed to the analysis of market models and power systems’ technical constraints, making them suitable tools to support decisions of market operators and regulators. However, the equally important support of market negotiating players’ decisions is being highly neglected. The proposed model contributes to overcome the existing gap concerning effective and realistic decision support for electricity market negotiating entities. The proposed method is validated by realistic electricity market simulations using real data from the Iberian market operator—MIBEL. Results show that the proposed adaptive decision support features enable electricity market players to improve their outcomes from bilateral contracts’ negotiations.

The energy sector has suffered a significant restructuring that has increased the complexity in electricity market players' interactions. The complexity that these changes brought requires the creation of decision support tools to facilitate the study and understanding of these markets. The Multiagent Simulator of Competitive Electricity Markets (MASCEM) arose in this context, providing a simulation framework for deregulated electricity markets. The Adaptive Learning strategic Bidding System (ALBidS) is a multiagent system created to provide decision support to market negotiating players. Fully integrated with MASCEM, ALBidS considers several different strategic methodologies based on highly distinct approaches. Six Thinking Hats (STH) is a powerful technique used to look at decisions from different perspectives, forcing the thinker to move outside its usual way of thinking. This paper aims to complement the ALBidS strategies by combining them and taking advantage of their different perspectives through the use of the STH group decision technique. The combination of ALBidS' strategies is performed through the application of a genetic algorithm, resulting in an evolutionary learning approach.

Esta dissertação incide sobre o estudo e análise de uma solução para a criação de um sistema de recomendação para uma comunidade de consumidores de media e no consequente desenvolvimento da mesma cujo âmbito inicial engloba consumidores de jogos, filmes e/ou séries, com o intuito de lhes proporcionar a oportunidade de partilharem experiências, bem como manterem um registo das mesmas. Com a informação adquirida, o sistema reúne condições para proceder a sugestões direccionadas a cada membro da comunidade. O sistema actualiza a sua informação mediante as acções e os dados fornecidos pelos membros, bem como pelo seu feedback à s sugestões. Esta aprendizagem ao longo do tempo permite que as sugestões do sistema evoluam juntamente com a mudança de preferência dos membros ou se autocorrijam. O sistema toma iniciativa de sugerir mediante determinadas acções, mas também pode ser invocada uma sugestão directamente pelo utilizador, na medida em que este não precisa de esperar por sugestões, podendo pedir ao sistema que as forneça num determinado momento. Nos testes realizados foi possÃvel apurar que o sistema de recomendação desenvolvido forneceu sugestões adequadas a cada utilizador especÃfico, tomando em linha de conta as suas acções prévias. Para além deste facto, o sistema não forneceu qualquer sugestão quando o histórico destas tinha provado incomodar o utilizador.

This dissertation presents a solution for environment sensing using sensor fusion techniques and a context/environment classification of the surroundings in a service robot, so it could change his behavior according to the different rea-soning outputs. As an example, if a robot knows he is outdoors, in a field environment, there can be a sandy ground, in which it should slow down. Contrariwise in indoor environments, that situation is statistically unlikely to happen (sandy ground). This simple assumption denotes the importance of context-aware in automated guided vehicles.

Based in internet growth, through semantic web, together with communication speed improvement and fast development of storage device sizes, data and information volume rises considerably every day. Because of this, in the last few years there has been a growing interest in structures for formal representation with suitable characteristics, such as the possibility to organize data and information, as well as the reuse of its contents aimed for the generation of new knowledge. Controlled Vocabulary, specifically Ontologies, present themselves in the lead as one of such structures of representation with high potential. Not only allow for data representation, as well as the reuse of such data for knowledge extraction, coupled with its subsequent storage through not so complex formalisms. However, for the purpose of assuring that ontology knowledge is always up to date, they need maintenance. Ontology Learning is an area which studies the details of update and maintenance of ontologies. It is worth noting that relevant literature already presents first results on automatic maintenance of ontologies, but still in a very early stage. Human-based processes are still the current way to update and maintain an ontology, which turns this into a cumbersome task. The generation of new knowledge aimed for ontology growth can be done based in Data Mining techniques, which is an area that studies techniques for data processing, pattern discovery and knowledge extraction in IT systems. This work aims at proposing a novel semi-automatic method for knowledge extraction from unstructured data sources, using Data Mining techniques, namely through pattern discovery, focused in improving the precision of concept and its semantic relations present in an ontology. In order to verify the applicability of the proposed method, a proof of concept was developed, presenting its results, which were applied in building and construction sector.
