In this work it is proposed an optimized dynamic response of parallel operation of two single-phase inverters with no control communication. The optimization aims the tuning of the slopes of P-ω and Q-V curves so that the system is stable, damped and minimum settling time. The slopes are tuned using an algorithm based on evolutionary theory. Simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach. © 2010 IEEE.

The Norwood I operation continues to be a procedure with significant operative mortality. One well-accepted risk factor for death after the first step of the Norwood operation is critical preoperative status. We describe herein a new concept for the treatment of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) in very poor preoperative condition. This is a case report of a child who was born in a rural hospital. On the second day of life he was referred to our center in multiorgan failure. There were signs of liver dysfunction and the child was anuric. Therapy was started immediately with prostaglandin and vasodilators as well as diuretics, milrinone, and dobutamine. However, systemic perfusion continued to be insufficient. Finally, the child was placed on a ventilator. On the fourth day of life, bilateral pulmonary artery (PA) banding was performed and circulation stabilized immediately. Two hours after the operation urine output started. Liver function stabilized over the next couple of days. Two days after PA banding the child was weaned from the ventilator. On the 12th day of life a Norwood operation with PA debanding and a right ventricle-PA conduit was performed, and 2 days postoperatively the child was weaned from the ventilator. Twenty days after the operation he was discharged home. When the boy was 4 months old a bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis was performed. In selected cases of patients with HLHS with very poor hemodynamic conditions, a rapid two-stage approach with bilateral banding followed by a Norwood operation after cardiac stabilization can be recommended.

The goal of the present article is to introduce dual-process theories – in particular the default-interventionist model – as an overarching framework for attention-related research in sports. Dual-process theories propose that two different types of processing guide human behavior. Type 1 processing is independent of available working memory capacity (WMC), whereas Type 2 processing depends on available working memory capacity. We review the latest theoretical developments on dual-process theories and present evidence for the validity of dual-process theories from various domains. We demonstrate how existing sport psychology findings can be integrated within the dual-process framework. We illustrate how future sport psychology research might benefit from adopting the dual-process framework as a meta-theoretical framework by arguing that the complex interplay between Type 1 and Type 2 processing has to be taken into account in order to gain a more complete understanding of the dynamic nature of attentional processing during sport performance at varying levels of expertise. Finally, we demonstrate that sport psychology applications might benefit from the dual-process perspective as well: dual-process theories are able to predict which behaviors can be more successfully executed when relying on Type 1 processing and which behaviors benefit from Type 2 processing.

Ed Lewis introduced the term “transvection” in 1954 to describe mechanisms that can cause the expression of a gene to be sensitive to the proximity of its homologue. Transvection since has been reported at an increasing number of loci in Drosophila, where homologous chromosomes are paired in somatic tissues, as well as at loci in other organisms. At the Drosophila yellow gene, transvection can explain intragenic complementation involving the yellow2 allele (y2). Here, transvection was proposed to occur by enhancers of one allele acting in trans on the promoter of a paired homologue. In this report, we describe two yellow alleles that strengthen this model and reveal an unexpected, second mechanism for transvection. Data suggest that, in addition to enhancer action in trans, transvection can occur by enhancer bypass of a chromatin insulator in cis. We propose that bypass results from the topology of paired genes. Finally, transvection at yellow can occur in genotypes not involving y2, implying that it is a feature of yellow itself and not an attribute of one particular allele.

We have proposed and demonstrated a nonlinear polarization-rotation-based fiber laser with two different operation states: passive mode-locking and multiwavelength emission. The intensity-dependent transmission or loss induced by nonlinear polarization rotation accounts for the distinct operation regimes. Our experiment results indicate that both passively mode-locked pulses and continuous-wave multiwavelength can be generated from the same fiber laser just through adjusting polarizations. Another characteristic of the current multiwavelength laser is that the used periodic filter is a birefringence fiber filter, which facilitates all-fiber integration of the fiber laser, so it is a potential multifunction laser source with all-fiber configuration and convenient manipulation. © 2008 IEEE.
